Something doesn’t add up about the chemistry bit there. The more dense and expensive batteries are the Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt batteries, with most of the extra cost coming from the more expensive elements. Its also worth noting that NMC batteries are normally only charged to 80-90% max to save battery life, whereas LFP are happy to go 100% each night, so the actual useable range often works out to be about the same.
I cant wait to get this. In about two years time 🤩 Also i want to add i dont see an issue with moving side mirror controlls and temperature controls to the screen instead of physical buttons because in the 5 years i've had my current car i've only adjusted the mirrors twice. With all the parking aid this car has you shouldnt need to change the mirror settings more than once, when you first receive the car. And in regards to the climate/temperature controls, in modern cars like the EX30 the climate system is mostly automatic. You set a temperature that you enjoy, lets say 22 degrees, and the car will automatically cool or heat to stay at this temperature at all times. So again there is no need to change this setting once its set. To my knowledge it can even automatically controll the fan speeds aswell depending on how much air it needs to blow out to achieve the set temperature. Very different from my current Chevrolet Spark where there is no temperature you just have a dial for hot air and cool air, and you then have to fiddle it constantly yourself to try and reach a comfortable temperature 😆 If this was the case in the EX30 - which its not - then i would understand the want for physical dials.
yes I have a Volvo and I set it for the season and don't touch it. it's more like a home heating/cooling system. I also have never changed my mirrors. I would want a heads up display, and I do like having the map In the driver's display.
Battery chemistry seems to be different. Lower trim of 51 net capacity are LFP, less expensive but with less energy density, meaning less range. Not a NCM like stated during the video. The bigger one is NCM with lithium also, with bigger energy density, better range and more expensive. Maybe the video should be corrected?
Volvo might have said 31-32k but on their website its saying 33.8k and 10 months to wait so prices will inevitably increase by then due to 'unforeseen increased costs'
You adjust you're mirrors before you start driving. There are plenty of reasons to not like the 'no buttons - everything in a touch screen' design cars now have, but that is not one of them. And for those interested, this is the twin to the Smart #1.
Mums got a 2019 Volvo V90 since new. People massively overreact about the centre screen controls. Mums never complained, I’ve never had any issues, and when you’re talking about things like wing mirror controls, you shouldn’t be driving anyway. They have to put everything in the centre screen to save you money. Would you rather be given 2 grand or have some buttons?
Volvo always playing it safe but in a very nice way when it comes to looks. Sad to hear that the S90 model is now dead (atleast in our country) but I'm a huge fan of their big daddy SUV. I don't agree with their research wrt placing speedo in the centre screen as opposed to infront of the steering wheel but i must say i love that glove-box trick they did.
4:50 I was going to say, how is the mid-level AWD with a SINGLE motor? But then I see that the audio description is correct, and doesn't match the text, which has that error.
VERY disappointed Volvo put climate and other controls in the touchscreen. That goes directly against their ethos of safety. And it appears volume control is the capacitive touch buttons on the wheel 😢. The EX30 was supposed to be the chosen one!
@@stevelupton2533 I understand climate controls have been on the central touch screen, on other models for a while, but they all have physical buttons for defrost/front/rear right near the console, and all have physical volume knobs. The EX30 is the first to remove the physical volume knob with integrated play/pause and remove the center console area defrost and hazard buttons. I believe the EX30 moved the defrost and hazards to the roof of the car and put a duplicate touch screen hazard "button" which is also bothersome. Overall, I view those decisions for the EX30 as marginal cost savings for Volvo with marginal safety reductions for the consumer. However, I still appreciate your comment noting this is a trend with other models but not as severe as the EX30.
Admirable attention to detail in matching your trousers to the pale blue colour of the car; shame you didn’t give the same attention to detail with regards the battery chemistry.
No HUD in front of the Driver? That's a huge step backwards! Heck, even my '16 Mazda has that. Having basic speed information in front of the driver's vision is essential to reducing driver vision fatigue
One thing. It's not about a car that "disolves climate guilt" in your words. I'm not worried about peoples guilt, I'm worried about our planet collapsing from climate change. Top Gear always had a certain contempt for electric cars and all things that are environmentally conscious and it sounds like that tired old belief system is still alive and well.
I don't get why journalists bleat on about needing a dedicated button to change the cabin temperature on the move. When I bought my car almost three years ago, I set the temp to 22 degrees and haven't touched it since. Shame it doesn't have a proper speedo in front of the driver though which is just blatant cost cutting. Then again, at least it has indicator stalks (I'm looking at you Tesla)!
Top gear isnt the same anymore... the lifeless cars cause lifeless videos. Decades ago every top gear video seemed exciting, competitive, breakthrough, or outstandingly luxurious

This is a similar size to an MG4 even though that's a hatch and this is an 'SUV'. But an equal spec is around £10,000 more (compared to Trophy long range). MG4 has buttons, has been out for a while (so is in a goodplace software wise etc.) To me MG4 is still on top but this is a good effort.
With the estimated 30 tons of CO2 for 200k this car‘s emissions are as green as if you would drive an existing car with a consumption of 6.44 litres per 100km or 43.86 Mpg. Alternatively if you factor in 8 tons of production CO2 for a ICE car you would need a car that has a real world consumption of 4.72 litres per 100km / 59.85 Mpg. Honestly not bad and electricity will only get greener.

Vauxhall would like to sell you an electric Astra for £40k. I would take this over the Astra any day.
Very big waiting lists coming!
I have a polestar with android automotive and google assistance does everything for me. The voice controls are very good.
So what’s the road tax? Finally a decent looking ev under £40k, so no ‘luxury car tax’..
Great report. Thank you. Especially the part about safety+buttons.
Yeh but who adjust their mirror's while driving
FANTASTIC PRODUCT.... WELL DONE VOLVO
BMW's i3 had nailed the lifetime emissions angle over a decade ago
Battery chemistry seems to be different. Lower trim of 51 net capacity are LFP, less expensive but with less energy density, meaning less range. Not a NCM like stated during the video. The bigger one is NCM with lithium also, with bigger energy density, better range and more expensive. Maybe the video should be corrected?
The truth is 99% of buyers will compare this to a Model Y, so maybe that’s what Top Gear should have done if they want to be relevant.
Brilliant review. It's the only electric car on the market I'm interested in
Volvo might have said 31-32k but on their website its saying 33.8k and 10 months to wait so prices will inevitably increase by then due to 'unforeseen increased costs'
£33.8k is for the Plus version - it will be the Core version that comes in around £31/£32k
You adjust you're mirrors before you start driving. There are plenty of reasons to not like the 'no buttons - everything in a touch screen' design cars now have, but that is not one of them.
And for those interested, this is the twin to the Smart #1.
Smart#1 plus the zeekr x all on the same geely supplied sea platform.
I've never had to adjust my mirrors. I set them when I get the car and haven't touched them since.
How's the reliability? XC40 was plagued by issues
I love it !!😮😊
As a non e fan, i quite like this.
4:50 I was going to say, how is the mid-level AWD with a SINGLE motor? But then I see that the audio description is correct, and doesn't match the text, which has that error.
Volvo is right with the focus discussion. Try it and you'll focus faster if you look on the side.
VERY disappointed Volvo put climate and other controls in the touchscreen. That goes directly against their ethos of safety.
And it appears volume control is the capacitive touch buttons on the wheel 😢. The EX30 was supposed to be the chosen one!
Volvo climate controls have been on the central touch screen for almost a decade! This is not new.
Has a lot of elements from Polestar.
I like this guy. Great walkthrough!
We need more information on the auto driving tech, or rollout of.
No HUD in front of the Driver? That's a huge step backwards! Heck, even my '16 Mazda has that. Having basic speed information in front of the driver's vision is essential to reducing driver vision fatigue
Yep, it's an odd ommision.
At 3:11 the little corner of the car that doesn't align with the door is hurting my OCD
My Allegro had a square steering wheel 45 years ago!
Saab made a 4 pot go 150mph 25 years ago with all electric switches in the center and a night panel for driving in low visibility. ❤❤❤
This is a very beautiful car. All electric. I would love the AWD version.
Sorry, but how is the Single Motor Extended Range version AWD instead of RWD?
That is a clever, clever car. And finally, a premium brand electric car that's reasonably affordable. 40k Hyundai? I don't think so...
Yeah, I do not like that lack of a gauge cluster one bit.
8:10 that's tight...
Agree, and I am surprised on Volvo going only touch screen for car functions with 'safety' in mind. Neither safe or efficient when hand should be on the wheel.
True, but you can always use voice commands.
I love my BMW i3s but since that has gone out of production I am looking VERY HARD at this for my next car.
Think you want to check mate £32k basic is not just over £30k…..£30,500 that’s just over £30k…..But the Car looks brilliant. That acceleration speed is silly but who doesn’t love it. Recently drove the Polstar 2 and it was just the basic one not performance and it was rapid.
Everything is perfect except the backseat..
51kWh pack is made of lithium ion phosphate(LFP) cells instead of NCM 4:38
Okay, awesome car, but... The speedometer on a middle screen? Bringing the driver's full attention to the screen... What is this, a Toyota??? Why?
This is a similar size to an MG4 even though that's a hatch and this is an 'SUV'. But an equal spec is around £10,000 more (compared to Trophy long range). MG4 has buttons, has been out for a while (so is in a goodplace software wise etc.) To me MG4 is still on top but this is a good effort.
I wonder if white will be a no cost paint colour? Because it really suites the cars shape.
Vapour grey is the free colour

Thankyou
For a volvo, this looks stunning.
Well done Volvo!
Please stop removing physical buttons just because it’s an ev. Other than that this is a compelling option if one must own an ev. I’d like to see a hybrid version.
Hybrids died long ago
@@Kurre. Lies, deception.
@@Kurre. I don't agree .... full on EV is still not fully ready for prime time in North America and pricing has yet to be brought to a level that is reasonable without government subsidies. The business model is still evolving.
@Wendell Wagner this car is just 35k and is perfect for 2 people or a young family living in the city! The range is adequate and if you need to go farther, you can always use public transport even though America sucks at that...
Start using your voice instead of pushing buttons :)
51 kwh NMC?
I thought it is LFP?
The base spec single motor version comes with a LFP battery - the long range and dual motor and standard batteries with Cobalt
Looks good, fair price for the lower specified. However , can never be on my list due to a touch screen for most options. I would need bi focal glasses, driving needs length, screen needs readers. Sorry, but bring back buttons and simple dials....much safer.
instead of buttons, voice commands will function just as well and a program upgrade away.
Great for the price
Looks like a great deal vs competitors, I wonder if they're going to actually make a decent number of them
At the revral they said it will be mass produced in high volumes.
@@GerardBendotti yes, but that's meaningless without a number. Mass produced in high volumes could mean 50k a year, for example.
Today at a launch event they told me at least 8-12 months for one (uk) if I ordered today.
But their website for reserving is very convoluted. They describe single motor 275 miles per charge and then say 3.4 0-60. Very misleading. Do you want any extras? Well, you can’t order them till the fall? So how much will the car actually be?
Hard no on any car that doesn't have physical clicky buttons.
Will this support Apple CarPlay and possibly their digital key feature?
You’ve got the battery chemistries completely wrong. The smaller battery if lithium-iron-phosphate, the larger is lithium-nickel-magnesium-cobalt.
Single motor extended range has AWD?
No
