Okay, let me try and defend good old catelyn Tully, and no i don't like her, heck i hate her,the best thing about her is the quality of her chapters.
Afther reading the book around 4 times i kinda sorta see why Catelyn acted like this.
In all honesty,as bad as she was,its implied that its something natural.
How many woman today would be okay with there husband doing something like this.
Heck Robert feared brining his bastardsb as Cersei killed two.
In all honesty i don't thick Catelyn ever feared Jon,
but she did fear his potencial heirs.
Most wars in ASOIF and real life are coused by problems of sucesion.
For those that don't know,Aegon the forth legitimised his bastards, wich lead to rebelions, five to be precise, known as the blackfire rebellions.

This Question have came up on many message boards my answer is that Lyanna was right he NEVER kept to one bed. He had many women and bastards he marry a woman who will NOT accept this shit. With Lyanna and Rhaegar and Elia Martell in the books it believe that Rhaegar was going to be polygamy marriage with Elia and Lyanna as both wives. Elia Martell couldn't have any children this is question if had Rhaegar lived would continue to have sex with Elia?. With Lyanna as his second wife?. Rhaegar was faithful Elia Martell until he run off with Lyanna. In the show version (which I find it stupid) Rhaegar had an annulment with Elia Martell without tell her and had a Septa do it now it books canon a prince can't setside a wife, only King can. A septa have no power to grant annulments in the first place.

    • @BrooklynRedLeg
      @BrooklynRedLeg 4 роки тому +1

@@Mainlyeverything - Thing is that Rhaegar kept saying "The Dragon has 3 heads", so he wouldn't have annulled his marriage. That was something I'm sure D & D did on their own and not based on what GRRM has written about Rhaegar and Elia. I'm sure Rhaegar could have found a loyal septon to perform the second marriage, thus legitimizing it in the eyes of The Seven, removing any need to have his marriage annulled.
Of course, the real reason this all became a problem is because of the sheer amount of information from the novels that have been cut from the Tv series. Had they been more faithful in their adaptation (which would have required many more full 10-episode seasons). The reason Rhaegar started on the path he did is because he became a believer in the prophecy of The Prince Who Was Promised and that Prince was supposed to come from his line. It was the reason Rhaegar went from being a scholarly type who loved music to training to be a warrior.

  • @TubeEamo

Isn't the whole point that Rhaegar and Lyanna, whilst otherwise decent people, made a disastrous personal choice?
*"A good act does not wash out the bad, nor a bad the good..."* They were complicated people.
Jaime is a far worse person than Rhaegar in both deeds and choice of lover. But he has noble qualities nonetheless.
Brandon Stark shouldn't have waltzed into King's Landing demanding the prince "come out to die," justified or not.
The Mad King's reputation wasn't a secret at that point.

I agree. There’s multiple layers to ASOIF: that’s why it’s so good. For example, consider that Ned Stark could have avoided everything by declaring himself king regent until the rightful heir came of age. He wouldn’t have to outright claim Jon Snow as Rhaegar’s son and therefore keep his promise but anyone with half a brain would figure it out. But that’s the beauty and the tragedy of it.

John Russell i agree with you in that regard but im not saying I need it explained. Are you saying it wouldn’t have been amazing to see the tourney at Harrenhall?? To see Jamie in his prime as well as Barristan Selmy, Robert and Rhaegar?? Or how great it would be to watch Robert battle Rhaegar at the Trident?? Im not saying I need it explained, I’m saying it would have been amazing to watch and that it was just disappointing that we didn’t get to see more after it was alluded to by GRRM himself. Rhaegar is extremely important to the song of ice and fire story and i don’t feel the flashbacks did his character justice. In the books he is clearly important from book one but a lot of show fans who haven’t read the books might not necessarily know how important his character (as well as Lyanna and Roberts Rebellion) actually is until the later seasons. I got my hopes up when it was hinted that we would get to see this on screen after reading about it in all its splendour in the books. I wont go into details so i don’t spoil it for future book readers.

Love your vids! The R+L=J thing in the show is yet another example of a plot point from the book that was used but not adequately explained. Rhaegar eloped with Lyanna because he, like several of his Targaryen predecessors, was obsessed with the Prince That Was Promised prophecy. He believed that Azor Ahai would be born from his union with Lyanna, and that mankind wouldn't survive the long night without it. Literally 1 or 2 lines of dialogue in the show could have explained this, but they didn't care obviously.

  • @cbrreezzyy69
    @cbrreezzyy69 5 років тому +6

You’re completely forgetting that the whole reason Rhaegar hooked up with Lyanna was due to prophecy. The entire R+L=J plot line was to show Jon was Azor Ahai/The Prince that was Promised, the person who was going to defeat evil and end the long night. Through 5 books, so far, and 7 seasons of television, there are so many signs to this. D&D CHOSE ARYA TO KILL THE NIGHT KING. It makes no sense. Why bring Jon back to life? Other than subverting expectations, what role did Jon play in the moving the plot forward? It’s just too stupid.

In the books, rhaegar Targaryen started to believe in azor ahai or the prince that was promised. Rhaegar believed in Azor ahai and he knew the long night was coming Rhaegar realized that he was not “prince that was promised” but believed his son could be. When he saw lyanna stark he fell in love with her, because she was so badass. He met her at the tourney at harrenhal hall. The harrenhal hall tourney was cover in some ways to depose his father (the mad king) because he was slowly becoming unstable. When Rhaegar and Lyanna went away together it was believed that Rhaegar “took” her. That lead to Lyanna’s Father, older brother, and banner men being killed. They basically knocked on the mad king’s door saying wtf about Lyanna and the mad king reacted to that and killed them. This started Robert’s rebellion and landed the show where it was at the start. Jon snow’s lack of action in season 8 and the long night just being a really bad battle, and the night’s king being worthless is how the show failed in many ways, making none of this build up leading anywhere. I hope in the books that the long night (the battle of life vs the dead) is done much better. My 2 cents.

my two cents :-) the Mad King's father thought he was the prince that was promised, then he thought his son would be the prince that was promised, and then he decided that his son was the prince that was promised. See a pattern here? Each of these idiots think they are so special that they either are or will make some Court of Savior and use that to justify all the terrible shit they do. Because if rhaegar had deposed his father made amends to Tywin Lannister and unified the kingdoms that way he would have had tens of thousands of people to fight the dead instead of instigating a civil war

The lack of connection they had actually enhanced the reunion as it shows us how desperate Sansa was to find someone she could trust. After having spent so much time with the Lannisters, being betrayed by Littlefinger, raped by Ramsay and the only thing close to family with her through those events being Theon, her clinging desperately to the slightest amount of familial connection she has left makes sense.
This is later tarnished by the lack of care she has for Rickon, but her reunion with Jon at least works within its vacuum.

However, with each book of the series you question what you know/think about the characters because more information is revealed through the perspective of new characters. When you read the rest of the books you will learn a lot more about Rhaegar. He was basically a perfect human being who was kind and honourable and understanding, and EVERYONE loved him and thought he was a saint. Which in my opinion makes it more tragic that he throws everything away because he fell in love with Lyanna, that such an amazing person caused so much strife because of a single "sin".

Also, as to Jon not recognizing himself as a Stark nor legitimizing himself as one while “King in the North” despite everyone else doing so and his mother being a Stark, has more to do with the Culture and practice of lineage in Westeros than anything else. People say "Oh you know Robert totally has Targaryen blood through his grandmother, and he is the new heir," when the case was that Ned didn't want it neither did Jon Arryn and no one in the realm wanted to fight Robert so they decided he was king.
It doesn't matter if Aerys II disowned Rhaegar if people decide to support Jon. I mean what do you think the Blackfyre rebellions were? Do you honestly think the people who supported Daemon Blackfyre cared that he was behind Daeron II in succession and do you think if Bloodraven backed Daemon and he ended up winning that someone would run into court and say "Daemon has no right to be king, kingship should be passed to *insert person with better claim*," and face anything other than summary execution?

Much like most of his decisions prior to it such as killing Qhorin, leaving Ygritte and all his decisions as Lord Commander, he did his duty even when he'd prefer another option. As Maester Aemon urged him, he killed the boy. Jon abandoning a duty only he had the experience to take up goes against all he'd previously gone through.

When you're convinced you're personally responsible for making sure the world is save you might make some irresponsible decisions yourself.

The ethnicity of both writers should be considered as to why they choose to portray the Targaryens in the way that they do.
Targaryens are outsiders in another people's land just as they are. They are telling their own story and it behoves them to have the audience be sympathetic to the outsider and by extension themselves.

I think it would have been a much better arc for Jon to have gone from Not being accepted as a stak and viewing himself as an outsider, to having himself and everyone else accept his as a true stark, and then finally show the conflict of him finding out he was actually a targareyan. As it is, his entire life he wants to be a stark and when everyone accepts it, he goes back to referring to himself as a bastard, then immediately identifies with his new targareyan family. Also, I've always hated how the show portrayed them finding out about Jon. None of the evidence even holds up. Sam finds out that Rhaegar had his marriage annulled and i can't even remember if it says that him and Lyanna married, but even if it did, that doesn't show that Jon is there child at all. Then with Bran, for starters, his powers are just so OP it's ridiculous. He should not be able to just know everything, they set it up that his power is through the weirwoods, but then just ignore that aspect to move the plot along.

Ok Anomaly, now do other main character assassinations based on the show only and keep it fair when doing Dany. Speaking as a Dany fan she's never been about getting the man, just the throne. I know you had strong feelings about the way they did her too even though you didn't care for her character.

You're going to poop your pants when you finally read all 5 books and realize all the MAJOR things they completely left out of the show.
    *Spoilers*
The real Aegon Targaryen is left out of the show. He raised his banners in westeros right before Dany sets sail for westeros. He brought the golden company with elephants.
    Lady Stoneheart
Jaime and cersei aren't tywin Lannisters kids. Tyrion is the rightful heir to casterly rock.
Basically everything that happens at the citadel.
    There's a few more but I forget.

Love these vids, but I think you might be a bit harsh on Rhaegar and Lyanna. We never get their perspective on anything that happened, and it's rather heavily suggested in the books that Rhaegar was specifically trying to fulfill the prince that was promised prophecy. He knew about the prophecy and that the child would be born of his parents' line. Everything they did makes sense if you don't view it as love-crazed actions but as a deliberate attempt to bring Azor Ahai into the world. It is clear from the books that Rhaegar was a scholar obsessed with the prophecy. Rhaegar may well have had specific reasons to believe this child had to be born and had to be Lyanna's. The book takes time to establish that this sudden running off was very out of character for Rhaegar, absent an extremely powerful motive. It's a big mystery in the books and it's almost certain that he knew something we don't. The show spends some time building this mystery as well only to leave us with THEY WERE IN LURVE.
I mean, they were still foolish, but their actions did birth Jon and they ultimately succeeded in creating Azor Ahai. Competent show runners might have given us this backstory and maybe spent more time in flashback.

The show just doesn't know in which time period it plays. You do not marry because of love. A marriage is for political alliances and to continue your bloodline. This shit began with Rob and Talisa. In the books he marries her because of honor, he was fifteen and slept with her. It wasn't love. And Rheagar probably wanted a child with Lyanna Stark because of some weird prophecy he believed in, that said his child with her could be the messiah.
Even Roberts rebellion wasn't because of love. That is only for the Shakespeares to write after the events. The prince captured the promised wife of Robert Baratheon. The mad King captured Brandon Stark and his squires, called their fathers to kings landing and murdered everyone of them (except for the Glover I think). And at the edge of extinction The houses Baratheon, Stark, Tully and Arryn forged an alliance against the king.
And probably Robert even loved Lyanna.

Your disdain and confusion against the Targaryen and specifically Rhaegar will continue even if you read the books. That's how GRRM portray the man, and Barristan was one of his closest friend. The nobles held Rhaegar in high regard. Only Dorne and the North disliked him.

+Anomaly Inc I swear, you are the ONLY one who seems to get it. The way Dumb and Dumber wrote Jon's arc was absolutely bullshit! They destroyed him as they destroyed Tyrion, Varys and Little Finger. Suddenly the smartest people become dumb just like Dumb and Dumber. And...the way they glorified Danaerys and made her into a White Jesus Savior was absolutely disgusting. No wonder so many were upset with her ending. The writers didn't explicitly showed how she was another entitled chick who only had a name and three dragons that someone gave her. And also, every single man is in love with Danaerys?? It's disgusting.

at around 10:00 when you are talking about Rheagar and lyanna, both you and the show writers I think got it wrong. the books suggest more than rheagar was obsessed with prophecy specifically that his children would be the 3 heads of the dragon and 1 would be the prince that was promised.
he convinced elia of this and it is suggested she convinced him to find a woman to give him his 3rd child since she could not.
when he meet lyanna he was convinced and convinced her she was the one.
for all of them it was suggested more they believed it was there duty to do this. not a sappy love story but more a tragic story of obsession of belief leading down a horrible path.

    Some major corrections:
    1. No, Catelyn was not that bad in the books. She was cold to Jon but understant that Jon was the symbol of Ned's infidelity. A symbol that she has to see every day. She is never cruel to Jon, and
Catelyn, by the standards of the book, treats Jon very well. Ned thinks Jon won't sieze power from Robb, but Catelyn isn't dumb.
There were 5 Blackfyre rebellions, one in her lifetime. Bastards when given power in Westeros, have historically tried getting more.
    2. Jon willingly wants to join the Night's Watch. He wants to go because his Uncle Benjen is there. Ned is also relieved that Jon is going there. Cat isn't some evil step mom type character that forces Ned to accept Jon leaving.
    3. Rhaegar and Lyanna running away is still unclear in the books and Robert's Rebellion almost certainly would've still happened anyways.
If you had actually read the books, you'd know that Rhaegar was planning to overthrow his father and The Arryns, The Tullys, the Starks, and the Boratheons had all recently married into each other's families. "Southren Ambitions"
When Rhaegar and Lyanna disappeared together, it was Ned's older brother Brandon who rode to King's Landing. He went up to the king and demanded that Rhaegar be executed. Let me repeat he went to the Mad King and demanded his Son be executed because of a rumor.
Brandon, who locked up and his father, was called. It wasn't until he came and went against the mad king that Aerys burned them alive and started the war.
The show changed this, having the entire conflict start with Rhaegar and Lyanna.
It's the exact opposite of what he said in the video. Aerys killing the lord of winterfell and his heir unjustly started the war, that was the powder keg.
This video is shit all around. A dude 200 pages into the first book who doesn't even understand what he just read trying to explain the plot to the whole series.
The show being shit is obvious. You didn't need 20 minutes to say that. This video is also full of red flags for this dude as a person. Grow up and touch grass pls

Reaghar and Lyanna getting together wasn't just a case of a couple of selfish teenagers falling in love. Reaghar knew about the prophecy of the prince that was promised and believed that would be one of his 3 kids (the three headed dragon). Since he had 2 with Elia and it was said she wouldn't survive another childbirth he believed it was crucial he fathered another child with another woman. This was the reason he got together with Lyanna, with the blessing of Elia

It's pretty ironic how Dumb and Dumber made both Rhaegar's personality and motivations the complete opposite of what they were in the books. Book Rhaegar is often described as a sullen and reclusive man and his primary motivation for fathering a child with Lyanna was to fulfil prophecy due to his obsession with it and seeing it as his obligation for the sake of the world. Show Rhaegar was just a horndog who's good deeds we have to get exposited in an attempt to forget how many problems he caused.

Surprise: The Dothraki (Who are back from the dead) and Greyworm allow Jon to be Banished to the Wall (Not executed for killing their Khalessi) which serves no purpose any longer because the Whitewalkers were destroyed and the wildling's are now allies! Surprise: Everyone agrees to the North's independence, including Dorne, Who did not bend the knee to the Targaryen's and their Dragon's but will now bend the knee for Bran the Broken! The books were nothing to write home about really. It was George Martin’s brilliant idea to make Daenarys into Lieutenant Calley. I am not pleased with Mr. Martin at all, and will not buying those last two books even if Martin ever actually writes them. Benioff and Weiss have little or no talent, they are horrible. I will never forgive them for making a total hash out of what wasn’t really very good to begin with. Bored people will watch anything on TV. But this was eight years for a Nothing payoff. Pathetic.
