Well played Valis! Got to hand it to a well done playthrough of Salamander. Brought back memories of my childhood, especially the painful escape sequence. Never could seem to no-death Salamander.
Another very good thing about the Japanese version is that you can always clearly see the names of all the upgrades. I always thought it was awkward how the American version only showed the name of the upgrade that you could actually use, since it didn't give you any real overview. In the Japanese version you can always see how far you are from a specific upgrade, which is nice.
This NES version has a better jive to the music like the arcade, i think the NES version is now my favourite home port dispite the PC engine having a slightly more accurate grafix
That I was playing that nes or famicom game in 2009 on my childhood on iMac Computer at McAuliffe Elementary I play Salamander (Lifeforce) when I was 8 year old child since 2009
1: No they weren't =P 2: I wouldn't say R-Type ripped anything off, but you're right, it didn't come first. 3: Salamander predates R-Type game by a year and Salamander didn't even come first
I remember when this came out. I was a little kid and all the teenagers who were obsessing on the NES were going ape shit over this. I recall people bringing copies on the bus and selling them like they were drugs. As much as I love the original I have to say I would like to see 2 things done with this title. 1: Remake it pixel perfect identical but with fresh graphics and preserve everything from the original but just update the graphics. 2: an Ace Combat shooter that keeps the closed in feel
It's sad that I can get the same enjoyment from watching this video that I get from playing the game myself. Do you know if there are any differences between this and Life Force?
This game pops up in my head randomly so I watch a gameplay on YT. Great game, and quite challenging too. The replayability on this was the best!
Remember playing this with my father when I was just a kid. Good times.
loved this game as a kid and still do as an adult.
I remember the escape sequence after the final boss, but not the game. Glad to have found this after all these years.
God i loved this game as a kid. Could not remember the name of it but remembered the music. Glad i googled 'games like gradius' now :D
Me and a friend of mine used to grind this game back then. ah good times...

My brain kept telling me the name of this game was life force. But ya this was one of my favorite games.
Another cool longplay from Valis. Keep em coming man.
The Japanese version of Salamander (Lifeforce) has a better ending than the "tacked-on" one for the US version.
Actually, they did and instead of giving you 30 lives, it gave you 99 lives. LOL
Another very good thing about the Japanese version is that you can always clearly see the names of all the upgrades.

So my brain was right and this was called life force. Nice to know my memory still work.
The ending of original version is the best
My favorite nes game. You have to know every trap in order to get to the end.
The later stages of the game gets so dark and hard
At the same time pretty satisfying when you win it

Ótimo jogo, marcou a minha infância ❤

a sister game to Gradius
Well, It is Lifeforce Famicom Title, but Stage 1, 3, 5 is look like Gradius and Gradius II, Stage 2,4,6 is look like B-Wings.
Its the best version of the Famicom than the Lifeforce of NES and the Salamander runs great on the MSX and the PC Engine
Literally the first videogame i beat
Wow, this seems like an incredibly difficult game. So much more difficult and longer levels than Gradius.
when I saw the thumbnail, I thought it was stage 2 of Battletoads xdddd
Esa música es siniestra cuando llega a los jefes es siniestra. Pero me agrada
that plane looks like a f16
This and Gradius 2 No Golfer are it!
I remember playing this game as a kid and it used to piss me off so much because when I get to the final stage it'll freeze on me...
1: No they weren't =P
2: I wouldn't say R-Type ripped anything off, but you're right, it didn't come first.
3: Salamander predates R-Type game by a year and Salamander didn't even come first
I think Gradius came out first.
But Salamander is better than Gradius
Salamander is a spin off of Gradius
Salamander is the only game that runs with VRC3 mapper
And It is Classic Arcade hit Game......
let it be shown that music is a major part of the gameplay....
The ending have diferent animations right? I remember the pilot leaving the ship abd this one 26:40 with her and the Helmet
O estilo parece gradius mas o gradius e vertical
The only nes to look better on a nes
27:32 Thought James In Gradius
Colonel James Burton
yeah life force.....
Look out for hamburgers. Lol.
when i was kid this game is amazing, but now im looking weird haha.
Three options instead of two?
Sounds a bit rubbish on NES but a great game. Only Vanguard mixes vertical and horizontal stages so quite original really.
The game HUD is pretty different than the West version
Salamander refers to the Zelous Armadea. Has nothing to do with the animal or the legendary serpent.

@RNorthex Any shmup fan worth their salt knows Salamander!
More better than Life Force.
This looks older than my granny 😲 🗝️
It's sad that I can get the same enjoyment from watching this video that I get from playing the game myself. Do you know if there are any differences between this and Life Force?
You can actually see the power up obtained on the meter, just like Gradius.
Also, the end credits have a nice bonus in Salamander.
First boss: Andross!!
you mean Golem
@Django333 well yeah, not much of a shootemup fun, but it's konami, si guess it's good x03
sounds like tmnt
Geil. Überall gesucht.
a lot of sfx from contra.
Claudio Diaz it was made by Konami and all Konami games SFX sounds the same. From enemies dying to the Pause sound
Claudio Diaz it depends if Salamander came first or not
Claudio Diaz it wasn’t from Contra
It was actually from Salamander
Salamander came out in 1986-1987 and 1988
the MSX version of salamander was better.. Konami's golden age
Edited
Why this game have 2 names? (Salamander et Life Force)
Why no description? ACTA?
Ending tries to rip off Metroid.
Turns off tha the pilot of the ship you controlling is a girl ^_^
Кейти Тамира
Haven’t you seen the Salamander OVA
Did you see one of the episodes
Those 3 have the same ships
But this is Vic Viper
Oddly enough, Baraduke called it before Metroid did.
Why not call the game by it's real name Life Force lol...Salamander makes no sense
Life force its a remake version
Original it was call salamander 😅
