I'm 54, and I discovered Devy about 18 months ago. I'm a retired musician and he put the enjoyment back in music for me I'm not a fan of strapping, but when he got more to the progressive, more epic songs, I can't get enough I think he's a relatively tortured genius during production, but when he hits the stage, he;s got that Mr. Hyde persona, and everyone knows, that's where he is meant to be
This is growing on me. Orchestral, Choirs, Prog., Quiet vs. Heavy, Organic... ... and a 20 minutes song. I'm sure Devin is totally in phase with his project. "I thought I actually had had a stroke" -Devin Townsend
Devin is the first musician I have ever bothered to stalk endlessly on google to find out as much as I can about him. Also obsessed with all of his work
I just listed to Genesis! Listening to it was like seeing a billboard on the side of the interstate that describes items at the next stop. Items include coconut milk, speedos, litter, swords ,satchels, 666-hour energy shots and mustache wax. The sign alone can halt one in their tracks but the actual exit stop is absolutely filled with everything covered under the sun.....which brings many a tear to the eye. Absolutely brilliant stuff Devin! I cannot wait to hear this complete album. I have never had a soul overdose until listening to this.
Sounds like he's learning a lesson when he says he needs to give them a few months of rehearsal. I was really surprised when he said the Plovdiv orchestra only rehearsed for TWO DAYS. I could barely hear them or the choir live (I was at Plovdiv) or on the release and I'll always wonder if he deliberately mixed them low because they didn't sound how he wanted.
I remember hearing him talk about that- it was more that the music was such a dense wall of sound to begin with there turned out to not be a whole lot of room for it to stick out musically even though everyone was playing all the time. He said he realized he can't approach the orchestra the same way and wanted to compose music with the orchestra more in mind with space for it to be heard better @@oremia
20 minutes long song! 20 MINUTES LONG SONG FROM DEVIN. I'M SO FUCKING EXCITED. I can't even imagine what Devin had made Anup Sastry to play. And an orchestra. And a choir. And these documentaries. God, never been so excited in my life.
Whenever I saw previous studio videos everyone was always so focused and tight. This time around the people involved all seem happy and loose. This is heartening to see. Looking forward to it!
I'm already getting emotional simply from seeing the choir and orchestra ... this is going to be phenomenal (as usual) but I'm pumped, already pre-ordered of course
0:16 - 0:22 That part alone made me think of buying Empath like... you know, I'm a buy 5 copies of it. It almost hurts to wait til end of march! Greetings from Germany!
Man, you've sculpted your life to be something so unique... so unique that it must be specifically and truly YOURS. Great work, I love seeing the attention and passion and serious consideration you put into your work. It's contagious, it makes me happy, and it fucking ROCKS.
Devin is...the best musician in the world. I'm not saying that other artists aren't better at their chosen instrument or even that they all have worse songs or anything else like that, but when you consider every single one of the different aspects that come into being a professional musician Devin is the best one bar none.
I am so stoked for this album! Patience wearing thin! Devin, thank you very much for this series of videos! I am going to enjoy this next musical adventure. I just know I will!
1:05 oh God, Dev and Joe Satriani (my two favorite artists) in the same place... Damn. I admire them both immensely. Really glad Dev's working with Mike Kenneally!
I sense that for myself this will ultimately be a unique way to ease into the record and understand where it's coming from, and I really appreciate the approach, Devin. It's an interesting alternative to the convention of dropping a record unto the listener, leaving them with the work of piecing together the motive and inspiration. Cheers.
I tend to notice real orchestra, if the amount of people get to large though you end up with a muddied sound, which you don't typically get with digital, eagerly awaiting the finished result!
i also really like to know who's behind the empath artwork? i know it's all devin idea's projected in to artwork by help of illustrator , but the guy did a great job on that like the previous album if it's the same person.
Mike Keneally is on the PET SHARK album that just came out. Amazing musician and musical genius. Great addition to Devon’s project. Can’t wait to hear this.
I love how nerdy Devin's progression as an artist is getting. There is an insanity to his genius that let's you know right up front that this is about an artist pushing themselves to their limit, to better themselves each time, all because of a passion for the craft of songwriting above all else. And when he teases that this is all leading up to the fully orchestral album? UGH! I think Queen said it best, "I want it all, and I want it NOW!"
Wishing I have the 💰 to see him performing live 😬 ,can't afford to ✈ out to other parts of the world. But when this album is out, I will definitely stream it on Spotify till my data hits the sky 😁
When I first heard about Empath, I was intrigued. Another Devin Townsend album is always good, so of course I had some hopes. However, I was a little skeptical - would it be following the same style of Epicloud, Sky Blue, and Transcendence? That would have made the most sense, especially if funding The Moth is the overall goal of this one. To be fair, those are good albums, but I don't think I have quite loved them the same as previous releases (just my opinion). But after watching this series, seeing interviews, and watching the way people have been reacting to getting to listen to the thing, I can honestly say I've not been this excited for a new album since I first heard of Devin, back in 2011. I am going to abstain from listening to Genesis, when it drops, so that I can experience this album in one take as a whole, and I cannot wait to do so. March 29, here we come.
Feel like I’m gonna love this album, although I gotta say, I’m a little disappointed that Morgan didn’t do the “prog” stuff too. That guy did Sol Niger Within...nuff said.
DTP's music changed my life. I'm sure this new album will have the same effect. Devin you are a LEGEND.

Elektra choir sounds sublime.
Very linear
I love this docu-series. I also am a fan of Lords of Sound. Great choices Dev. I am becoming more and more excited for this to come to fruition!!
I can already tell that this record is going to be the best record of Devin's career. Every sound byte/tease I've heard thus far sounds phenomenal.
Agree 100%
DEVIN! Never swap an orchestra for samples! Your fans are the kind of people who definitely notice the human touch to the sound

@@graysonwilson-cacciapalle7989 I heard that too, but all the same, two days for rehearsal seems crazy.
@@oremia The choir wasn't playing during the Ocean Machine part of the show.

I love this documentary series. Always awesome to get a behind the scenes look at Devin's process. Cannot wait for this album.

I could have watched this for two hours. I love this series.
Maaaan, I got misty eyed hearing the Choir and the Orchestra
To be a fly on the wall when the choir director confronted the Devin's SYL image she learnt about with the actual person.
I am so stoked for this album! Patience wearing thin! Devin, thank you very much for this series of videos! I am going to enjoy this next musical adventure. I just know I will!
I hit like, and then, i watch the video. Im sure im not the only one.
Wow.
Guilty!
Same
I hit like, then I read your comment. I am sure I AM the only one!
Yeah me too 😊
A choir, an orchestra, Nolly, Sam, Morgan ect. AND Nickelchad... Damn...
@boomy that guy from nickelback, Chad Kroeger is appearing on vocals on one of the tracks
Mike keneally!
@boomy Dev goes into detail on how this colab came to be on his latest guitar clinic video from London I think
@@SYLRMHA Wouldn't it be hilarious to hear Chad suddenly fly into a falsetto then start belting like Bruce Dickinson

5:50 dunno why, just love that lower harmonic under it all.
OMG,...I am ridiculously EXCITED about hearing this! Woah!
This episode was so lovely!
Ok, 2 minutes into 4th episode, I just preordered. Gonna be a lil tough for the rest of Feb, but this I just gotta have! Love you, Dev!

Mike Keneally is amazing!👌🏻 And all the band on this album is just incredible!…
So excited for this album!
This is precisely what I was expecting, studio footage with glimpses of studio work, hoping there's also footage with Nolly in the pipes!
Sooooooooo excited for this one!
The eerie soundscape of the soundtrack is great
Oh I loves this stuff! I could watch such studio documentary from such awesome musicians as Devin all day long. Very interesting and inspiring!

Amazing album mr Townsend, I hope you’ll always make musics like these.
By the way, I’m willing to buy the vocal and choir version too. Beautiful.

Woah that studio looks amazingly comfy.
Just bought the ticket for the November show in Budapest.
This kinda makes me think of Dewey Cox and 'more didgeridoos!' but it looks freaking epic. So keen.

It's not Travis Smith, is it?
I think it was Anthony Clarkson, he also did Deconstruction.
thanks for the info.
