He should be one of them for sure. but as great as Devin Townsend is, his music isn`t as commercially viable, not only is Devin a metal musician which is already a slim market, as metal heads are generally an elitist and narrow minded bunch, but Devin is a prog metal musician, which is quite niche.
I'm glad it's not just me feeling that way. Why are we listening to such a lightly recorded voice when the proper volume settings are being accomplished?
So I just randomly watched this. I listened to what he said, I consider myself an open minded human being and musician, so I looked them up.... I heard the first song on a UA-cam playlist and thought to myself “wow I wish my music sounded just like that“ Just from an engineering perspective it was unbelievably awesome !! And then from the musical and emotional perspective I thought it was really super great. I listened to the next song, the next song, the next song and I thought “I guess I’m one of the guys that likes Nickelback”. I play metal, I play rock, I play jazz, I get hired to play musicals (which have all of the above and more), I toured my entire life as a musician, I teach music for a living, I play six instruments daily (and perform live on all of them throughout the month), I write, produce, & engineer... And I’m super grateful that I watched that seminar to know that if nothing else I’m not one of those guys that says “I like this type of music and that’s it”. Steve
Great to hear this. Love Devin being so real. In my opinion people that hate on Nickelback are just childish and narrow-minded hacks. They wrote some great songs and melodies: How You Remind Me, Someday, Photograph, Savin' Me, Far Away, If Everyone Cared. I listen to that stuff unironically every now and then. I don't care whether the rest is 'shit'. And there is generally no point in hating or pretending to hate someone for the music they put out.
@@andrewvanhalen1984 I'm afraid it goes well beyond that :D It's just cool to hate on them for whatever reason. Not actually cool of course but you know what I mean.
Because of Chad I watched this interview. Subsequently I listened to your music and I love it. I can actually understand the words. I do wish your voice was louder though.
Devin is the example of great human being , It's sad people hate on someone or group of people who had no effect on their daily lives while politician and leader of the world ruin everyones life by killing innocent people and they are getting away with that , if you don't like their music just move on ez pz , adding 1 more hatred to this fucked up world not gonna change anything.
So glad Chad told him about the vocals. I always thought they were drown out in his music. I assume he treats the vocals as an instrument but they are the weak link in his production. Maybe articulate more when he sings would help too
People hate on Nickleback but being from Canada very few bands up here get mainstream recognition beyond Canada...Fact Nickelback just did the same thing AC/DC did figured out that formula of what to sing about and same three cords and melodies that mainstream radio wants to here and made a boat load of money doing it good for them I'd love to do the same thing. People hate and say they would rather be broke and be a real musician then be a Nickelback bullshit! I throw a multi million dollar record deal at you and anyone would take it even Devin just to fund the awesomeness he creates right now. But unfortunately people with the skill level of Devin will never make it to the mainstream radio or the level of Nickelback because the mass population can never and will never see how amazing of a musician he really is and it sucks. The cattle of the world only care about the simple hook of a song.
Interesting that Chad said " turn your vocals up" cos I've had the exact same opinion. I've often liked your live performances better than the recordings for that reason
WTF is up with everyone hating on Nickleback? All they did was make music, made music that MILLIONS of people obviously liked, still do. I can see it if they were kicking kittens and punching puppies or something horrible like that to deserve the unjust hate they receive, but, all they did was make music
A lot of people feel they were massively overplayed which... I can sorta see tbh. Lord knows I've come to hate some songs just because I heard them too much. Personally? Loved them as a kid and thought they were pretty ok since then. Hearing that Chad Kroeger apparently, aside from the money, also just really makes music he loves makes me happy. But I don't necessarily think it affects my opinion of their music one way or the other.
Here's the thing with hating Nickelback. Sure, a lot of people genuinely don't like that music, but most people who hate on the band just got tired to hearing it everywhere they went for 20 years. Early Nickelback's hard rock sound was incredibly popular on its merit in the early 2000s and it just never left the radio, so as you'd drive to the store, you'd hear Nickelback. Then when you got to Walmart or Macy's or whatever, you'd hear Nickelback's lighter music. Then, when you left the store, you'd hear more Nickelback. And as time went on, and then they continued to make music that would then get put into that rotation, and suddenly you have every store in a town playing the same band at the same time. In many ways, i expect that kind of thing would've happened (to a lesser extent and in a more niche market) if Dev pursued Strapping instead of making Infinity
This is similar to what I have been saying for so long. The idea that they suck is baseless internet pack mentality by people who are just taking part in herdlike bullying. They have some good songs.
About time someone stuck up for chad , whoever started this hate campaign against nickle back was childish nothing more , isn’t it funny that in the end your so called perceived enemy end up being the one who saves you , the wonderful irony of life 👍
Listen, I grew up with Christian rock music up until about 15 years ago (no idea what's been going on with that genre since then), I've heard some shit, and Nickelback is not shit. They're kinda boring to me, they've never really been my jam, but I have heard far worse. Heard of Apologetix? Yeah? I'm so sorry, they're awful.
Yeah, Chad and Nickleback have done a lot of things Devin hasn't done. But there's one thing Devin has done that Nickleback has (mostly/probably) never done. Devin has connected his music to a nostalgic feeling that all of his fanbase can resonate with sonically. I don't know how he's done it, but it's miraculous and Dev's music has probably changed a few million's lives. (not that NB hasn't, but their music does seem a bit too disingenuous)
I knew secretly the reason Chad is involved in this Dev album is to gain more commercial popularity to make more money. Not that wanting to make more money is a bad thing. But who else will Devin ask next, Adam Levine?
Devin should be the most famous and highest paid person in the industry
This should be the most liked comment on UA-cam.
did you listen to anything he said?
He should be one of them for sure.
but as great as Devin Townsend is, his music isn`t as commercially viable, not only is Devin a metal musician which is already a slim market, as metal heads are generally an elitist and narrow minded bunch, but Devin is a prog metal musician, which is quite niche.
Chad Kroeger is soooooooo right about your vocals, Devin. Turn them up!
Yep - best vocalist ever. Transcendence suffered from his vocals being drowned in the mix
It never even occurred to me until now, but he's dead on, there has always been something missing despite him being a very talented vocalist
@@antivorg1239 not always, it's only really been in recent albums where Dev's vocals have been turned down in the mix
I'm glad it's not just me feeling that way. Why are we listening to such a lightly recorded voice when the proper volume settings are being accomplished?
what an amazing person Devin is...I was having a tough day and this totally turned it around.

Some of them are probably slipknot/Corey Taylor brown nosers (disclaimer: I like slipknot)

Not a nickleback fan, but I respect all rockers that have succeeded in the slightest.
The harmonies are Hear Me with Chad is sick; their voices sound great together!
Moral of the story: Make the record you want to listen to and lean into the stuff that makes you feel vulnerable.
"...and you have to turn the vocals up."
Heh. That's a TLDR version of a reaction/review of 'Epicloud' someone posted the other day.

It’s still ridiculous that people can’t get along just because it’s a fad to hate pop rock bands. Good story.

Dont forget about Rush. One of the best bands in the history or Prog Rock
more people love Nickelback than hate them, jealousy is an ugly monster.
Wow, I no longer hate Nickleback, thanks a lot Devy haha, seriously dude, this story made me laugh and tear up a little, this was great.
For the people who hate Nickelback: Please listen to a few songs from The Long Road. It's fucking metal.
Yep and Feed The Machine. Brilliant Album.
Love Devin , he is humble and honest!
I am now waiting for devin to cover this is how.
I saw Chad when his band was supporting bon Jovi he is awesome live
This anecdote is the musical equivalent of the Robert McGee scene from Adaptation.
Interesting that Chad said " turn your vocals up" cos I've had the exact same opinion. I've often liked your live performances better than the recordings for that reason
Hard to wrap my head around Chad Kroeger being instrumental to what I consider one of Devin's best albums xD
Anyone know what song DT is referring to when he said, "I really like the new Nickelback song"?
He's talking about leading up to the release of Empath which was around 2019, so I'm guessing it was a single off of Nickelback's Feed The Machine
Devin is one of my favorite humans.

Yeah I don't get it either. I don't like their music, but what reason would I have to hate them for making it? It's silly.
