That is the topic I've been researching recently.
@@waza987 no it really does not, manga is just as "childish" as comics and are just as "adult" as comics, it matters what u prefer or what medium has more stories u enjoy or resonate with
Thanks for the debrief. I've been buying comics since the early 1960s, and now own a couple thousand comic books (stored in containers and packaged in bags and cardboards). I'm retired now and only purchase about a dozen or more trade paperbacks each year (from Dark House, DC, Marvel or Image comics). Hopefully the recent shift towards digital stories does not result in a decline in the value of my collection.

It used to be that my main source of knowing the comics was either my marvel encyclopedia that listed thousands of characters and major storylines they were in or it was by reading the wikis. While I'd say those are still my main sources, I did finally start to collect a few comics. Right now I've got two collected editions of Moon Knight. One is the Bendis run and one is the Lemire run. I've found that these character focused collected editions are super easy ways to just get into one character and story line. One of the main reasons I've had trouble with getting into comics is because often a character's solo run also has issues that pertain to an ongoing event. So the collected editions help trim the fat and just tell a single story. I will probably continue to just look for characters and storylines I find the most interesting and buy the collected editions so I don't have to hunt for random single issues that might not always fit the story.

I'm liking your videos so far, I've been getting back into comics this December and just started reading titles I've been seeing in the past and never had a chance to read. I read the The Three Jokers comic for the first time and I really liked the art, the action and the story. I'm currently trying to get into more underrated characters in comics.

I've been reading Conan for a couple of years and I'm starting to look at other characters like Spawn, Red Sonja and Black Panther. But my problem is the availability and that even Epic Collections are expensive and hard to get if you want to read the original stuff.

My advice would be read what you like and don't get caught up in all the variants. It gets very daunty very fast like you said. Spent on year before i figured out how the stories and issues coincicde

Great video! And very necessary. There must be a lot of MCU/DCEU fans who were interested in the comics over the last decade or so who got put off by how messy it all it. Compared to how easy it is with manga or the Walking Dead or something. It would be great if Disney+ had some features on the comics that inspired the movies, or other explainers that could help bring in more readers. Maybe even selling a curated selecting of comics at a stand at the movie theatre when the relevant movie is showing.
Awesome idea! That would definitely make comics for the MCU, for example, be much more approachable if Disney+ had a section pointing out relevant reads that help give more backstory. I really like what DC did at the end of the flash trailer where they told you the 3 big relevant reads to get an idea of where the story would go
Yeah I just got really into comic books recently through the new Ultimate Spiderman series, I got the first 2 issues so far and I been really enjoying it. He’s been one of my favorite superheroes and I just heard about it through a friend they was redoing the ultimate universe series and thought why not, it seems like a good time to get into comics.
I think I’m going to try out the new ultimate X-Men series when that comes out too.
The thing i always hated about comics was how confusing it was to start a story. You always had to have read other stories before this one and manga generally doesn't have that problem but this video really helped me want to give comics an actual try.
I’m glad I could help with that! That was the biggest thing that tripped me up too from the beginning. It honestly still gets me sometimes too but not as bad
My only problem is when there are thousands of issue 1’s.

That being said I’m trying to get into comics & I’m really surprised I have a lot of image, like more than the big two which is strange seeing as they are like the beginners of comics but I always see cool art for an image comic & just have to read it sometimes !
Totally true there’s a bunch of number 1s flooding the stores, almost monthly. And yeah image has some really dope art for sure!
Here to see if I can learn anything about how to give some good starter comics to my 10 year old son so he can see if he’s into it. 😊
That’s awesome! What helped my with my son is asking who are his favorite heroes, then getting the graphic novels (collections of comics related to the same story) so he can read it on one cohesive story. That’s probably the easiest approach to it. For example if he says he likes Green Lantern, get him the Green Lantern Rebirth Graphic novel or Green Lantern No Fear. If he likes the Avengers, get him Avengers No Surrender or Avengers Standoff for example. Just random examples but you get the idea. These can be found on Amazon or at a local comic shop. The other approach is just going to the store and getting the latest single issue of that particular hero but you could be jumping into the middle of a story so it’s hard to recommend that sometimes. Hope that helps!

Unfortunately i'm lacking big time on star wars comics. Even the disney plus series' like Andor, Ashoka, and Mandalorian season 3 i have a lot of catching up to do!

When I was getting into dc comic at first. I was like okay I’ll buy just the green lantern omnibus and didn’t plan on jumping in to the whole lore of dc
That was my exact plan too for DC. I wanted to get the Geoff Johns omnibus but couldn’t afford it at the time, so I bought trade paperbacks one at a time of the main stories that lead up to Sinestro Corps war (rebirth, wanted, etc.)
I highly recommend that similar kind of plan of just getting into a character you like and then spinning off from there to get invested in the whole universe
I've been reading comics for the last 14 years and have officially dropped it going on 5 months now.
It's just too expensive, and the quality and care just isn't there anymore sadly. It sucks because I really enjoy this hobby, but its just not the same nowadays.
Sorry to hear that! There’s definitely been a change over the years for sure. What were some of your go-to books/characters you read?
Batman, Superman, Daredevil, Immortal Hulk, Thor, Xmen (especially when Hickman was doing his hox pox stuff) and really anything that looked really interesting to me.
I'll still be picking up Saga when that comes back because I've been collecting that since issue one and while it's lost a little steam I still really enjoy it.
I kinda lied though because I do still collect one comic by Daniel Warren Johnson and that's Transformers..DWJ has so much talent though and the quality is always there for only 3.99.. it's a must for me.
Marvels numbers ones were at 6.99 for a first issue and then it drops to 4.99 - 5.99, that's just stupid prices in my opinion for a book I may or may not enjoy.
I may checkout the new ultimate spiderman but idk yet because it's still a 5.99 issue and I think the sweet spot for me is just 3.99.

@@TheComicBookGamerShow I've been collecting since 1977 at age 9 stopped in 2004... I would purchase curtain books because of the artist after 2004...The best book I read in 2024 is the new Ultimate Spider-Man. The only books I hunt down this day and age are Marvel silver age books
