BG Music:
Yes Brad, this song has two completely different guitar riffs layered over each other. Slash plays the riff that starts at the intro, Lenny plays the funky riff that comes in on top after you hear Slash's riff alone twice.
And they fit so perfectly together.
It's cool how far they've come that Lex can break down the tracks now.
Lol
It's 2 riffs but there's one clearly guiding the listener ear and the other working as a counterpoint. Old harmony laws well applied to a rock-funk context
Brad & Lex, you’ll love his "It Ain't Over 'til It's Over" and “Fly Away” !!
fly away, his worst hit from his worst moment... 🤦
pick any song from his 3 first albums, ANY song really, those are phenomenal recordings, but not that fake AOR crap please
It Ain’t Over is great! Fly Away sucks.
It Ain't Over is definitely worth a listen. But, the best of them is Fields of Joy!!!
2 bangers
Not fly away. Warning. Maybe I was made for you but never fly away. Oh and entire album strut. Ya musical uneducated.
He is just too good looking for one human! He sings great too! LoL 😂
Trivia: Lenny & Slash went to high school together -
"Slash and I went to high school together, but we hadn't seen each other since,” Kravitz told MusicRadar in 2019. "When my first album was out, I went to the American Music Awards and Guns N' Roses were getting awards, and they were sitting in front of me. He and I just kept looking at each other like, 'I know you.' Not 'I know that you're Lenny Kravitz and you're Slash' - but, like, 'I know you.'"
Hey guys what's up! Greetings from South florida! When Lenny Kravitz came out he was a breath of fresh air. Nothing sounded like him. Old school vibe, with funky hooks. But if you want to hear something totally different check out his song Believe. You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!
Every song on Mama Said...AHMAZING! Love Lenny Kravitz! Talk about an underrated musician!
I love every song on the first three albums ❤️😍
Slash is playing a pure riff while Lenny is playing chords that go along with the riff
One the most underrated rock songs of the 90s, always crank up the volume when I hear this 🤘🏼
This is the head-bobbinest track ever recorded. Fantastic horn arrangements and great guitar.
I had never seen this video until today. My WORD, dueling hotness with Lenny and Slash for the visual. I may lose consciousness 🤣 LOVE the sound and the brass as well. Excellent choice.
“Can’t Get You Off My Mind” is a big time vibe and one my favorite songs by anybody.
Yep.
Slash is playing the riff, Lenny is playing the rhythm which is like higher pitched syncopated chord strumming, Chinka-chinka sound like in disco and other funk tunes.
Great track. Super funky. Has a real 70s vibe but with a modern take
Slash plays the riff and Lenny plays some notes that are in the same scale but it's not exactly the same riff. It worked the same way in GNR with Slash and Izzy.
Lenny & Slash went to high school together. They knew who each other was, but didn't hang out then..they became friends later. I've been waiting for someone to react to this!!
Seen Lenny in concert years ago, he put on a great show, sounds amazing live
Lenny Kravitz song 'Circus' and 'I Built This Garden For Us' are great songs to give a listen to.
Its called two epic guitar players doing their thing.
Very underrated live act...highly recommended
lenny is the best and seeing him live is amazing!
That riff is so old school and so legendary. So funky including the solo.....
..and NOT Lenny
Sy Kravitz, Jewish father of Lennie Kravitz was an NBC NEWS Producer. His Mother, Roxie Roker played the roll of HELEN WILLIS on the TV show THE JEFFERSONS. She played in a bi-racial married couple on the show. Also had bi-racial marriage in real life.
Lenny is still awesome 😎 today!!
Hey hey from New England.. This is one of Slash's best riff and solo..so funky it wouldn't have worked in GNR..Peace..
Lenny Kravitz's mom was Roxy Roker from The Jeffersons TV show. For a poor white boy in rural Kentucky, that show helped show me Black folk & us had more in common than we had differences.
Lenny LOVES his late Mama so much. It's sweet.
Fantastic tune ❗ it falls from a Stevie Funk riff into a nice blend of Rock n roll without losing the Funk ❗😎
Lenny is a humble rock n roll bad ass… Swagger for days
Lenny is some super funky vibes..Such a talented musician.. an FYI, his mom was the gorgeous Roxie Roker from the sitcom The Jeffersons back in the day...
Again is another great Lenny song
This was actualy a song that Slash wrote for Guns N Roses initially, but due to some reason that I can't remember (either Axl didn't like it or whatever) he went to Lenny and they tweaked it, wrote the lyrics and you got 'Mama Said'.
He went to Lenny because Steven Adler couldn't play the drums due to his drug addiction.
@@vinniedixon1140 yes that was it!!!! Thanks!
I read Slash’s autobiography. He said that he thought the riff was too funky for Guns, so he brought it to Lenny.
Slash and Lenny are friends from high school (even though Slash dropped out). They went to Beverly (same high school used in the show 91210 and the movie It’s A Wonderful Life) in Beverly Hills.
Great live version of Kravitz joining GNR
for this in Paris back in '93 👌
Lenny's mom was a chatterbox. ;) I have no idea why Lenny and Slash, who were high school buddies, didn't just stay together after GnR broke up (which wasn't quite 1991 when this was released, but a bit later, iirc - correct me if I'm wrong). Two powerful egos, maybe. Personally, I think this album was his very best of his many great records in the 90s. Every song bangs.
They weren't high school buddies, but they did know each other. Slash was buddies with Steven Adler.
Lenny’s mom was mrs Willis on the Jefferson’s
@@leighsaldivar4439 for real? I never knew that. Interesting...
@@Whats-It-To-Ya yep. She was. I loved the Jefferson’s. Cracked me up.
@@Whats-It-To-Ya oh and her name was Roxy Roker
There's two guitar riffs playing at the same time, and they're one on each side of the mix.
Also, Slash and Lenny went to school together.
Brad: Slash is playing a distinct riff and Lenny is as well😄Good call!
Oh man do I love me some Lenny!! He's just the epitome of cool. Such a great mix of rock and funk!
Mr Cab driver - Lenny Kravitz ✌
So a riff, is a short repeated phrase it can be any instrument. Riff rock, refers to rock ‘n’ roll songs that use the riff as the background for the lyrics and sometimes even the chorus.
A riff is Single note lines as opposed to chords. The line that you’re hearing the bass do is like a counterpoint to the main riff so they complement each other and it adds interest and movement to the song.
Different enough to make the song more interesting and catch your ear but similar enough to go seamlessly together.
A year ago this would have sounded like drrrrrrr, lol.
I think what your hearing here is
Slash is playing a riff consisting of single notes and Lenny is strumming chords.
His Momma said the correct stuff, hence his life. BTW, may absolute favorite song of his.
I seen Lenny and band with Aerosmith in Pittsburgh was a cool time , at the time I took these to black female R&B/RAP singers to the show they had never been to a rock concert lmao those two were wore out by the end of it they were blown away and clearly had a blast and got some respect for Rockin Roll ,, fun times ,was worth every sent to see their reaction , yeah man another cool show by Brad & Lex
Lenny Kravitz and Slash went to the same high school
Lenny plays the rhythm guitar, bass and drums on this song. He recorded it "old school" using analog equipment, the same recording equipment used by the Beatles. Henry Hirsch was his engineer at that point in time. Always on the run is one of lenny's best. I build this garden for us is another good track you should check out.
Great musician.
Huh? SO seldom in the 1990s... CUM on, Keith'
@@dallesamllhals9161 not sure what u mean.
Two separate riffs; in the style of Guns ‘N’ Roses. If you listen closely (especially with headphones) to the songs on ‘Appetite For Destruction’, you will hear Izzy and Slash’s two separate guitar riffs playing at the same time - it was their signature sound.
Brad, I would describe it as a distinct riff from each of the bass, rhythm guitar and lead guitars. The rhythm guitar can have a riff, but it remains a little more tied to the beat of the drums and bass.
Lenny is the only one who can combine funk rock style mixed with super charisma and crazzzyyy beat
Lenny is playing "Rhythm" (funky riff) in your left ear and Slash is playing "Lead Rhythm" (rock riff) in your right ear. They are 2 different riffs that go together. Its called contrapuntal rhythms. Lennys influences here are from the funk/jazz/rock geniuses of the 70s, like Herbie Hancock's "Head Hunters" or Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground". Listen to those, if you like this.
What a pairing...Lenny is a bada**...period (doesn't need be said about Slash...the dude IS a mold of bada**-ery). Goes to show that you don't have to play a thousand miles an hour to be heavy. This is definitely one of those that should be cranked up to ten...love the Bootsy/Funk flavor.
Oh man, I wish they would listen to Let Love Rule or something off his first album. He played every single instrument on his first album. I love Lenny! I won tickets to see him on his first tour when he opened for David Bowie at dodger stadium. It was so awesome 😎
Lady ,Where Are We Runnin, Again are all bangers
What a coincidence, spent The whole day listening to Lenny , discovered one. Lenny Kravitz - The Chamber
Lenny plays pretty much everything except the horns and the Slash guitar parts on this album. Pretty sure he was basically the whole first album, too. Not sure about the later stuff, but he's definitely the real deal.
Oh man this is a throwback❤️My 2000’s
There’s three guitars on stage rhythm guitar next to the bass player, slash, and Lenny that’s why you’re hearing different riffs.
One of Lenny's best rockin' songs, especially with Slash who is a guitar god!
this song is frkn sick! cmon, Lenny Kravitz And Slash in the same song? kills.
Fun bit of trivia: Lenny Kravitz's mama was Roxie Roker, aka Helen Willis, from "The Jeffersons."
Lenny!!!! Try are you gonna go my way if you haven't yet .
Heres a few more good songs from Lenny.
"American woman"
"Again"
"Fly Away"
So, what you hear is the riff with the backing rhythm, that is the chords that are in key to the riff notes. And bass is somewhere in between. It's complicated.😂😅
Lenny Kravitz had a ton of great, great early stuff.
always on my playlist!
To my knowledge, Slash and Lenny attended the same school in Los Angeles.
Yes, there are different riffs. Kind of. It's called an arrangement. Letting each instrument play distinct lines that complement each other but let each instrument be unique and recognizable. From experience I can tell you that this song is so much fun in a band because you have so many layers that are unique but go so extremely well together that I get goosebumps everytime I can play this with a good band.
"Don't ride that crazy horse" is also a guitar reference. Check out Neil Young and Crazy Horse.
Brad got a PJ Harvey T-shirt ! Yesssss !
Brad, not all song lyrics (in fact, very few) should be taken literally. And different riffs/grooves/rhythms can be played simultaneously. It makes a song more badass, usually. I believe in you! You have many more "complex" songs to react to.
That makes sense Brad. Lenny was playing a very distinctive funk style chordal rhythm guitar that is very predominant in that it takes the forfront over the riff. . Slash is play a single line Riff. Most "riffs", regardless of instrument it comes from is a single line of notes that repeat. The Bassist is playing a simple bass groove that complements Slash's Riff. Bass grooves are mostly some sort of repetitive single line riff in itself. In total in makes a complete super groove that is just killer effect to the ear. the Key is to not have one instrument step on the toes or get in the way of each other. Much like the experience you will get, say for example all the different complimentary moving vocal line in Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. This interaction of multiple moving lines at the same time is referred to as Counterpoint in classical theory.
Proper love you both. Mint couple! Mint reactions! ❤️ From Manchester, England 😎
Check out Field of Joy and Flowers For Zoe. Written to his daughter Zoe Kravitz. Drummer in the video are Cindy Blackman Santana. Wife of Carlos Santana
Here is the deal Slash wrote alot of funky riffs, but he couldn't use them for guns, so he passed them on to lenny, and this is one of those funky riffs you are hearing. What drew them together was being of mixed race, and being isolated, not to mention both mothers was black and into funk (parliament funckadelic)
How have I never heard this song before? I was into Kravitz for a quick minute in the late 90s & early 2Ks but somehow I completely missed this one. Strange...🤔
This is what always fascinates me about music and multi guitars, who plays what/sound.
Brad picked it up right away, Slash, Lenny came in a bit funkier a bit later.
Love this tune, seriously underplayed and underrated!! ❤👍🏽🤩
Listen to Appetite, Izzy and Slash play nearly every song like this with different riffs but come together at the right times.
my favourite Lenny track.
He's was a unique artist.
Ahhhh, the inspiration for Bobby Boucher'...
Hi Brad, there ARE two distinct guitar parts, the main part which introduced the song and Slash's more simple laid back piece.
There's bass as well, Lex, but it's holding the fort more than anything for me.
Mama said get funky now!
Brad: Can you have two riffs at once?
Let me introduce you to King Crimson.
Brad is correct, there are two primary riffs! Trust me I'm a guitarist and played both. 😊
Gotta react to the original video for "Is There Any Love In Your Heart", by Lenny Kravitz.❤️❤️
Such a great funky tune.
I think they've know each other since being at the same highschool.
His guitar player and slash just about have the same hairstyle but they are definitely two different people
Lenny and slash both went to the same school
Lenny needed more Slash in his life.
We all do
There are two guitar riffs in this song, they are supposed to complement each other. The reason you picked it up so hard is most likely that they are panned to the different speakers.
Lenny has such a great sound
This is the funkiest, sexiest collab I have ever seen. 😍🥳
Lenny is a bonafide bad ass
Time for you guys to revisit Molly Hatchet - song = "Gator Country" a Florida song by a Florida band for those that dwell in Florida. Their whole 1st LP is great.
Be still my funky heart!!
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHh YEAHHHHHHHhhhh LENNY KRAVITZ
IT'S A WONDERFUL ATOMIC ENERGY !!!!! GREAT GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank You Brad & Lex !!!!!!!!!! GOD BLESS YOU
There were three guitar players Lenny, Craig, and Slash
These guys were actually in high school together.
No! Lenny is playing the chicken scrasch guitar thats funky and slash the riff!! This song is very funky. Lenny plays all instrument exepct slash guitar and horns. This is a killer and from 1 of the best albums ever made!!
One is the melody and the other is a counter melody. The real question is which is which?
Fun Fact: Slash and Lenny Kravitz actually went to High School together before they got famous
fields of joy next...slash solo..come on¡¡¡¡
Playing in unison is the musical term when 2 instruments are playing the same thing.
