    I’m very happy with my newly purchased R3. The SD card slot works for because I use it to shoot sports in jpg. I find it very similar in operation to my R6 ii but the stacked sensor makes a big difference reducing rolling shutter distortion.

    Thanks for your video. I bought the R5 MkII three weeks ago, and so far, so good. However, when I tried the R1, I have to admit that the viewfinder and the AF-On button joystick are truly awesome. I wish they had included the AF-C joystick on the R5 MkII instead of the Eye AF feature, which almost nobody uses. That said, for me, the R5 is the way to go due to its size and weight.

    For wildlife shooters, jumping into the back of safari trucks and sloshing around in boats, the extra durability and weather-sealing of the R1 is critical, especially in locations where replacement cameras and repairs are unavailable. Also, the R1 batteries are not only longer-lasting, the 10-volt electrical system is superior to the R5's 7-volt, which slows the camera down as the battery fades. Personally, I find low-light performance much more important than higher resolution.

      While I agree with you, I have had no issues in inclement weather with my R5 or R5ii. Even my R6ii has been great in the rain. I just go out and shoot and pray I don’t need to use mt insurance. 😅

      I could not agree more! I have the R5II and was caught in a rain storm two days ago and now the camera has to go back to Canon. Ended up with water inside the battery compartment, sd card compartment, and even coming out of the sensor area when I removed the lens. And I even had the camera covered with a blanket trying to rush home. Now half of the functions on the camera doesn't work if I can even get it to turn on half the time. Just ordered an R1 to be my primary driver now.

    Thanks Fabian! This is the comparison I was waiting for! You say "In the end, I was actually surprised the difference between the two was not even as big as I would have expected." For me, clearly, the R5 Mark II is the way to go... I think I can live with the extra noise at high ISOs compared to my R5.

      Is the R5 ii weather sealed? Something about those exposed vents on the camera makes me think twice about the long run if it was made for outdoors/wildlife.

    I had the R5MII for about three weeks before I sold it (luckily, for what I paid). The noise level at higher ISOs was just too much to justify the price of the camera. Back to my R6MII and very satisfied. For my situation, the 45MP is really not needed.

    Great comparison 👍…literally just charged the battery up on our new arrival …r5mk2…we have an a r3 ..which the wife uses..she won’t let go of it… but I have been using 1dx mk2…it feels antiquated compared to r3 .. but is is bulletproof … but we chose the r52 for video …and 45mp …which I really struggled with 1dx ,mainly auto focus, and buffering in 4k60..about 30sec 😩…but hopefully this r5 will help.. in wildlife we tend to not worry about overheating cus of short clips … just did 5 second test shot in the kitchen in I don’t know what video format straight out of box….instant locked on the eye…so just for that amazing … can’t wait to setup and test this weekend…. But it does feel like a toy compared …I’ll have to get a grip

    Thanks as always for your great information! I just took delivery of my R5 Mk II (to go along with my R5 and R6 Mk II) two days ago. I'm furious that my work has been so busy I've not been able to do anything with it just yet beyond updating the firmware. I'm planning to spend a lot of time with it this weekend. This purchase was made following a great deal of thought: Did I want to go with the R3? Did I want to go with the R1? While I'm certain I'd be thrilled with either one of those bodies, I have to be honest that I'm definitely not the target demographic; I'm an avid hobbyist, always looking to improve my technique, and love taking landscape and wildlife photos, particularly birds. I'd be interested to do sports photography, but there aren't that many opportunities for that in my area.
    All that said, however, when I was still in DSLR mode, I started with a 300D (which I still have, because it's too much of an old friend to get rid of), had a 20D, a 7D, a 7D Mk II, and finally a 1DX Mk III! Based on that pattern, I may well have an R1 Mk III someday! 😉 At any rate, I'm convinced that there's no such thing as a "bad" Canon body right now, so I'm currently in pretty good shape.

    Hi Fabian.It seems to me that the Canon R5 II is stirring up quite a bit of debate, particularly about its dynamic range and ISO performance. Sure, the ISO performance may appear slightly more pronounced in certain cases, but out in the field, such details often lose their importance. What truly matters is what the camera allows you to capture: a unique scene, subtle light, a fleeting moment that will never return.
    Thank you for these very professional tests, which offer an insightful technical analysis. That said, should we really stay home when the light fades or the rain falls? For me, the R5 II is far more than a tool for ideal conditions. It’s a true 4x4, rugged and reliable, ready to tackle demanding environments where others might hesitate. And do you really think a lynx or a wolf, in all their majesty, would refuse to be photographed at 12,800 or 25,600 ISO, if it meant immortalizing their fleeting, timeless presence? So, get out there and shoot, no matter the weather.

    • @contentm3893
      @contentm3893 Місяць тому

      The debate is coming from Canon haters or R5 owners. They are doing the same with the R5 II vs the R5C for video. I can tell you the R5 II is better than the R5C by a lot. Canon is getting a bad rap from You Tubers because they aren't really reviewing the R5 II when you think about it. Most of the video and photos they shot and talk about is amateurish and are reading the same negative talk from other reviewers. Every Tuber wants to protect their relationship with Sony and others instead of doing a honest unbiased review. The R5 II is up next to the A1 in performance and passes it for video. This means the R1 is going to be better than both cameras.

    I really like the comparison in your video showing the R5ii image vs the R1. I really needed to see something like this. Zoomed in and cropped to show how much detail there was and noise between the two images. This helped me with my debate on the R5ii at 45 mp sensor vs the R1 at 24 mp sensor.
    I have the R5ii and love it but I can’t stand the noise. I want to go to the R1 for better low light and less noise but was worried about a loss in detail.
    Your video shows that there is some loss but not really that much.
    Typically I shoot sports and will crop in around 25% or so. I didn’t want to suffer to much loss in detail which it appears the R1 can handle a crop like that no problem.
    Would agree?

    • @FabianFoppNaturephotography
      @FabianFoppNaturephotography  Місяць тому

      Thanks! So far I‘m really happy with the R1. At low ISO the R5 II wins if you need to crop more, but this advantage is not present at high iso. And if you anyway only crop 25% (75% of the image stays) then I don’t see a problem with the R1

    Not so sure about the R5 mk II having better AF than the R3. Another review by someone who actually owns both said the R3 is stickier and just slightly snappier than the R5 mk ii. Apparently the R5 mk ii has issues sticking to stationary subjects at times and starts focus hunting.

      I was using an R3 with an R5 Mark II to shoot soccer and baseball. Although the r3 had very good autofocus, it was clearly bested by the R5 Mark II. The R5 Mark II would acquire the eye at further distances and it stuck to the intended subject much better than the R3. I found the difference significant enough that I always wanted to use the R5 Mark II on any fast moving action. I will admit I was extremely happy with the r3 autofocus until I got the R52. The R52 ruined the experience of the R3 😂. Of course someone else's experience might be different, but I shot 10000s of images with these cameras together so I am pretty confident with this assessment. In the end I sold the R3 and purchase the second R52.

    Cool comparison. Canon have a great line up and I’m torn now if I should jump to full frame with the R3 (used), or R6iii. Either way they will likely complement the R7ii which I likely will get. Enjoy the cameras! Oh the evf, I don’t see any actual size dimensions anywhere, just dots. Id like not to squint so much with the R7 so R5 upwards it might be for me

    I was surprised on the amount of noise in the R1 when you compared them at ISO 12800. I mainly shoot sports with my R6, R5, and now R5m2. There’s a noticeable difference in noise between the R5 line. Therefore, I was thinking of getting an R1 or R3. However, after seeing the noise similarity, I’m getting second thoughts about an R1 for indoor sports where I can sometimes shoot up to 12800. I’m afraid that it will be too similar to the R5m2 and that I’ll be disappointed. I can usually stick around 4000 to 6400 and still denoise it in LR. But $7,000 is a lot to spend for a camera that is showing minute differences to a cheaper camera.

    • @FabianFoppNaturephotography
      @FabianFoppNaturephotography  Місяць тому +1

    In actual field use the R5 Mark II has too much sensor noise if the photo is cropped much. Very disappointing that it's no better than other cameras that have already been out for several years. Maybe if Canon releases an R1 with a bigger sensor after we have to wait yet another 3 or 4 years they will finally get the noise under control.

    The WB button, noting and agreeing with your criticism that it cannot be reconfigured, makes a lot of sense for a camera like the R1.
    It will be a popular camera with pro sports photographers, who shoot in jpg a lot. So when shooting in changeable conditions, be it weather or an evening match or whatever, having the ability to quickly change wb is smart.
    E. G. Maybe a player is standing in the shade before taking a freekick, but some of his team mates are in the sun. Manual Wb to get the freekick taker right. Then, before the ball is whipped into the sun in the box, switch it back.
