This event highlighted the conflict between revolutionary ideals and extreme authoritarian measures. Despite its complexities, the fall of Robespierre on July 27, 1794, is seen as a triumph over tyranny masquerading as progressive policies.

Remarkably detailed account of the "Terror". I must say I glad that Laclos managed to escape the guillotine, since a few years before the Revolution, he describes the abject corruption of the aristocracy in his novel "Dangereuses Liaisons". I'm always amazed that not only was Fouche was spared the guillotine but that he went on to be Napoleon's
Chief of police. However his penchant for vigorous prosecutions, almost sent him into exile.

When I was young I often wondered why the Anglosphere was so hard on the French. Then I learned their history.

The problem of this analysis, fascinating though it is, is that it is itself ahistoric i.e. Thermidor ended the terror. Formally true but fails to mention that widespread white terror was instituted throughout France as part of the reaction. Thence we have the the comparison with the Great Terror in Stalinist Russia. A poor example. If a comparison should be employed it should be with the early Red Terror employed by the Bolshevik government during the civil war period. The Stalinist terror was, in fact, an outcome of the Stalinist Thermadorian reaction itself which replaced the earlier revolutionary regime of Lenin and Trotsky. The main group who were the first victims of Stalin's terror were the old leadership of the Bolshevik party.
