I feel like Poniatowski was a brilliant general, then shortly marshal. Maybe in other circumstances he could've been one of the best military commanders of his era. He was brave, competent and fought without fear for Napoleon, despite being Polish patriot. he also fought for freedom of his country and basiclly saved remains of Napoleon's army after Leipzig. His monument seen in video was an inspiration for generations to come. He fougt and died for Poland, and for Poland only. His sacriface has reinforced Polish patriots, who one hundred years later took part in WWI on basiclly every front and freed Poland.

*General Barthelemy Joubert* (who has been featured as one of the French Division commanders in Napoleon's Italian Campaign series) should also have been a worthy mention.
As in the height of the French revolutionary wars in the late 1790's both Generals Joubert and Bonaparte had built themselves a considerable high standing and fame within the French republic and army as one of France's most skilled, successful and beloved rising stars of which both had been each given several appointments to numerous high commands by the Directory, and they were also of the same age.
So when Director Sieyés was planning on who should be the military figure to lead the coup d'etat of 18 brumaire in 1799 to sieze power over the Directory, his first pick was general Joubert in recognition of his high popularity and status within the French army and to the people of France,
so when they offered Joubert to join in the coup as its military representative he was more than willing, complaining:
*"They lose time in words. When they like, I will finish it all with twenty grenadiers."*
Unfortunately the following month, he would be killed in action commanding the Army of Italy against Suvorov's Austro-Russian army at the battle of Novi in Northern Italy. While loudly encouraging his men forward when he was struck in the heart by a musket ball, killing him instantly (coincidentally less than a year later, general Desaix would die the same exact way just a few miles north at Novi, at Marengo) and died in the arms of general Suchet. So when news of his death reached Paris, Director Sieyés eventually gave the role to lead the coup to general Bonaparte as Joubert's replacement instead.
*Interesting Fact:* Joubert's widow who had been married to him for only a few months later remarried to another famous French officer,
general - later future marshal *Jaques MacDonald.*

Amazing video. It would be great to get some more in depth videos about the Marshals. For example, there is quite the story to tell about Marshal Lannes. His exploits on Malta, how he showed his gratitude to the soldier that carried him back in Egypt. The Consular Guard mismanagement. The story of his time in Portugal. How he as one of the only people would complain to Napoleons face and their close friendship. The reasons why he wanted to duel Soult and Bessier. The riding accident that very nearly killed kim. How he very accurately predicted his own demise. And all of that is just one of the marshals.

You can admire how different and glorious the time has been in history. When drummers made moral for soldiers in battle. When fighting for your country meant something. Even the emperor himself was on the battlefield. It must have been spectacular time and age. My only wish would be to meet Napoleon himself. Such a unique man. Agony struck me when Ney got shot, even for his bravery and love for country, France.

I'm sure you would have changed your mind drastically had you actually witnessed the slaughter on the Napoleonic Wars' battlefields. The stench of rotting corpses, some of them upright, mutually run through with bayonets, blood soaked ground, spilled guts, hacked limbs, soldiers permanently crippled or disfigured, people starving or dying of disease at much greater rate, the rapes, the lootings, the executions of prisoners (or refusals to accept surrender)... All those things that Napoleon's propaganda including the paintings of Jaques-Louis David do not portray for very good reasons. In reality it was a time of huge dying and suffering.

Fighting for your country has always menat something. However, with as many battles as have been fought in Europe especially, we have figured out the boundaries of both the countries and of the people. Borders are the way they are now for a reason.
Just because we have found relative peace does not mean glory is unachievable.
We have learned to prefer glory in politics instead of in bloodshed and the sacrifice of our soldiers. The consequences of preferring those ancient motivations are something napoleon himself has had to deal with.

Excellent summary of the careers of Napoleon's marshals.
As for General Gudin, his presumed remains were formally identified in 2019 near Smolensk by comparing his DNA with that of his brother.
Seriously wounded at the legs at the Battle of Valutina Gora in 1812, he was brought back to Smolensk where he died.
He was buried in 2021 at the Invalides in Paris with full military honors.

I'm not sure who said it, but it may have been one of the Napoleons: "One mediocre Marshal is better than two brilliant ones."
The point being that you could rely on the one to get the job done but two or more marvellous prima donnas would take up all your damn time mediating between them -- let alone letting the enemy come up the middle between them...

Whilst I understand that Józef Antoni Poniatowski did not fight for Napoleon for that long compared, especially with the title of Marshal, compared to his other Marshals, you can argue a case for his military genius and personality putting him far far above the majority of them, save for Suchet, Ney, and Davout. His absolute dedication and military successes allowed Napoleon peace of mind to focus on other things. Napoleon's failure in Russia would have been averted if he had listened to Poniatowski's advice. Even in his short time under Napoleon, Poniatowski was an absolute game changer for him.
