Hi there,me,my wife and daughter was here in Riga 3 week ago,weather was beautiful,no coats needed,it was in the 20s sunny,we were staying at the wellton Riga,near the central market,of which we had a great day there,also the canal boat trip,by the way it's cheaper to get tickets from the hotel,great sites everywhere,opera house is so beautiful,trams,buses,trolley buses are cheap,you get your tickets from all the newsagents,we had ten days here and saw most sites,even lido theme park,with the water fountains that dance with the music,food was cheap here,proper Latvian food,would come again, Regards Mike,fay,Michele, Wigan,gtr Manchester. Officially it's stated that Latka Gravas (Andy Kaufman's character from Taxi) Home Country is unspecified..but I always thought it was Latvia > Simka too for that matter > now back to the show 😜 Seriously now...the Destinations you select ... you could easily be my travel agent > I'd simply say wherever Claire picks 👍
I love Riga, Claire. I think I love this city more than Tallinn, Estonia. Your video is awesome, I love your music in the background and your narration. The city of Riga in Latvia just reminds me of Germany - you can see the German influence in the architecture around. Did you know that Russians make up 21% of the population of Latvia ? The long time mayor of Riga (now ex - mayor), Nils Usakov was an ethnic Russian. In fact Latvia has the highest population of Russians outside of Russia. The meal you ate is a smorgasbord of cultural influences on Latvia - the German influence can be seen in the sausage, the Russian influence in the beet soup or borscht and the Swedish influence in the cabbage.
Well originaly Borsch is Ukrainian soup. If you seek some russian food, it could be dough buns with cabbage and maybe soljanka. Also Harcho is not russian but Georgian soup if you know what I mean.

In your video you said Latvia was founded in 1991, but it's not quite true. Latvia was fouded in 1918 and regained independence in 1991!
