  • Ghost Town - Schererville History - (Hartsdale Indiana 2019)
Did you know that Schererville Indiana has a ghost town? Well it does, and if you live near Schererville Indiana you probably drive past it all the time. This Frontier community from the 1800 no longer exists, but their are remnants of this town that have been left behind. The community of Hartsdale Indiana began in the late 1800s where two rail road tracks and a railroad interchange once existed. The intersection of the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern railway and the Pennsylvania Rail Road created an economic opportunity for early settlers in the region. The EJ & E came from Joliet Illinois, east through Dyer, Schererville, Griffith, and up to Gary Indiana. The Pennsylvania track came from Chicago through Munster and Schererville before traveling through the state of Indiana on it's way to Ohio and Pennsylvania. In 1911, Hartdale was incorporated into the Town of Schererville Indiana. Only one set of tracks remains here. The other track, the Pennsy Greenway right of way is now a bike path. This film was recorded in early 2019, before the bike path was completed. This Northwest Indiana history lesson is brought to you and narrated by local northwest Indiana real estate broker, Bill Port.
