MLS Cyber Attack!! Indiana Realtors Shut Down!
The Indiana MLS ( Multiple Listing System ) that compiles housing listings was attacked this week by a ransom cyber attacker. Since Wednesday August 9, 2023 Realtors in Northwest Indiana have not been able to access listing data that is essential to selling homes in Indiana.
One of the most immediate issues is that new listings are not able to be added to the system. Since the MLS is the main starting source for distributing advertising data to the market real estate brokers are struggling to find homes for home buyers and in addition, Realtors are challenged with finding a way to market their listings on the internet.
NIRA, the Northwest Indiana Association of Realtors has employed Rapattoni MLS Corporation to provide the framework to distribute active home listings through sydication to Realtors and internet marketing websites of public facing housing advertising websites. These websites include Zillow, Realtor.com, Homesnap, RPR as well as individual realtor websites and the websites of major Real Estate Websites.
Real Estate Agents and Brokers are challenged in numerous ways to market their client's home to prospective buyers. In addition, Realtors are not able to access the Sold and Closed transaction data, also known as Comps or Comparable data. Without this data, establishing fair market values for selling clients becomes nearly impossible.
Appraisers are basically shut down in their ability to complete Appraisals for properties that are under contract, which means that if this problem persists it will soon affect the ability for Lenders and Banks to be able to provide mortgage loans for properties in Northwest Indiana.
The FBI is presently investigating this MLS Cyber Attack while Rapattoni and their insurance provider negotiate ransom demands of the attackers.
As licensed Realtors in both Indiana and Illinois, we have listed our Indiana listings into the Illinois MLS which is provided by MRED to the members of the Chicago Association of Realtors, CAR, and the members of the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors, MORE.
Posting our Indiana listings into the Illinois MLS provides a path to distribute our Active Homes For Sale Listings to all the advertising portals that would normally receive this data through the NIRA MLS (formerly GNIAR).
