It's like a derringer muzzleloader, you just need a PATCH to make the ball fit very tightly to the bore and you'll get lethal velocities, 3 or 4 F powder would also help, all you're getting is blow-by, wasting most of the available gasses. You can try running your 2F in tiny quantities through a black pepper mill turning it slowly with leather gloves on in a pinch.
The 3D printed bullets are cool, but they dont seem to hold up to the g forces and pressure of being fired. Have you (or anyone else) tried melting aluminum cans and making solid metal castings of some of the 3d printed designs? Even just some solid aluminum cannonballs should produce more consistent results, i would think. Just my 2¢.
We just got a lathe in the shop that I'm going to have to learn how to use, Thankfully the summer just broke as well, that's been a limiting factor as it's been in the high 90's for months but I'm going to start casting some stuff as well!
I never thought I would see something less powerful than a 2mm pinfire pistol. One of those will actually go through a piece of bread, an aluminum can, or break a lightbulb. They can even use a blank and adapter to fire a miniature flare.
When I was at school, a friend had a lathe and a milling machine in his basement and he turned out a steel cannon that fired fishing weights probably about 5mm bore. We use to break open 22lr blanks and that was the charge we used, and then hold it in a pair of pliers or the bench vice and fire it. I think we were lucky not to lose and fingers or worse lol
That's beautiful haha. I made one out of a log once after the mythbusters episode but never a metal one. Someone else mentioned the .22 cannons so it looks like that was a common thing to build when life was more fun haha
That thing is so cute, but if it had been made to accept fireworks fuses (the thin ones) the barrel pressure would have been much better. Food for thought and next version 😁
make connon with 5.5mm bore --- insert 5.5mm drill bit --- remove bullet from .22lr ---- keep powder aside for later project---- place .22lr case over drill bit light .22lr rim with tea candle or propane torch. now u made a fues less cannon for those who cant get fues
Have you tried using a finer powder, such as FFFFG (made for flintlock pan charges)? Another option is flashpowder, but that's where one should tread lightly as it generates a whole different realm of pressure. I have a micro cannon that I use with flashpowder and it's about a powerful as a full-size airgun. It sent a steel bb through a full 12oz can, through two layers of nylon cloth and lodged into a deck 2x4. I just broke open a firecracker and used the flashpowder from it.
load it up with pistol smokeless powder. like 4-5 grains. dont stand behind it that screw might screw u ;p benefits, burn much faster, that way it can build presure in that tiny barrel, and since its smokeless its going to gum up ur barrel alot less compared to blackpowder ;p
You need to do thorough research before making claims of things being the world's heaviest, lightest, fastest, slowest, biggest, smallest, or etc. That's not the world's smallest cannon that shoots
would you be interested in say maybe 3 solid chunks of pewter to use as a projectiles? been casting and have loads left over. I have a feeling it may just spit out liquid metal due to the low melting point but who knows!
I bought a small wooden cannon model when I traveled to Norway a few years ago, it has a bore of 1.75cm, and it probably could shoot. I won’t shoot it, though, because it might explode/catch fire (because wood), I don’t know where to buy black powder (or any explosive/deflagrating propellant), and I don’t have a firearms license. Unfortunately, I’ve got some exams coming up, but the last one’s on Thursday, so I’ll try and cook something up for you then.
I made one when I was a kid out of a log ironically. I think that might be a fun channel idea. Good luck on your exams and I look forward to what you can cook up!
Well hell....Now I HAVE to load up and fire off the tiny cannon (stainless steel barrel) The Lovely Bride gave me for Christmas last year. Mine is more along the lines of something you would see on a 19th century battlefield.
Ahh, just what we are looking for to turn the tide in the never ending war with ants in the backyard. Despite incredible losses, they keep advancing on the house. This terrifying wonder weapon is sure to demoralize them, probably. 😉
Ironically I just discovered that dawn power wash spray works incredibly well on ants inside and out, as wasp nests. We've had a line of ants under the garage door for years and I sprayed them a few weeks ago. Never returned. But them again I do have an ant cannon now which I didn't then so maybe it's that....
Reminds me of a pen gun from the 60's or something like that that a friend of my father had. It took these little, itty-bitty .12 cal cartridges loaded with a lead bullet that if you were really, really lucky, would hit a soft pine board with just enough force to stick into the surface from a few feet away. But it did work really well as a pen. Lol.
@rustymustard7798 That was my reason to send it to him. lol he just didn't have that heart to really SEND IT It was so he could say I shot a cannon from my cannon, not something you see every day
@@RGCbaseace Oh! I had a but of a miss understanding on that for you as I thought that was a last resort if I couldn't get it to fire. I'll be happy to make that happen for you if you want me to!
@TheCannoneer no it fired first try, but I used powder from a firecracker (flashpowder), no projectile well paper It was actually used to test, and a few things it's why it was threaded in the back, then everything switched to 302 stainless and looks nothing like a cannon now
@@RGCbaseace I quite love the little brass barrel. It's my favorite touch as it makes it look like a cool little classic cannon. You did some good work on it.
A better gas seal might help. Try paper patching your BB's with cigarette paper. The fuse hole though is where most of your energy is getting wasted at through blow back since it has to be almost the same diameter as the bore.
great video, have you thought about trying to shoot paintballs out of the cannon using a canister and how dangerous would those paintballs possibly be?
@TheCannoneer mine was made to shoot .25 caliber steel bbs, 100% infill with strong filament and wall thickness settings larger than the models design needs (so all the lines are printed concentrically around the bore, I figure this helps with it's strength?) Was a lot of fun. Even built recoil springs into it lol. Love your videos
Hahaha, adorable :-)! Your powder seems a little on the coarse side. ^^ 8gr 4f is what fits in the chamber of a liegi derringer repro or a decent 25m target load in a ~.30 percussion pistol. The liege has also a very short barrel but respectable power. So I guess there is some untapped potential in your little guy there. ;-)
We started out with the finer powder but it didn't seem to burn as well for some reason. It might have been too fouled before we switched over to the courser ground. It took a while of trial and error to figure out you need to clean it in between shots and we just stuck with the course powder at that point haha. If we get another mini cannon I'll be sure to start with it super clean and finer grind.
@@TheCannoneer Yeah I imagine, such a small bore is super finicky to dial in and many things can go wrong. Esp. if you do not have the luxury of a ignition jet from a percussion cap going through your tiny chamber and charge. Try wadding, packed tight, on top of the pellet!
Anything that builds pressure is going to help.
