    This is one of those topics that are put into an appendix for a reason. No one is expected to memorize all conditions. Players ought to try and memorize the ones relevant to what they'll usually inflict on creatures and the DM should have the appendix easily available on for example their DM screen.
    Seriously, if you're an aspiring DM and worried about not being able to memorize the rules such as all the conditions, don't even worry about it. You're not supposed to.
    Also, sometimes you want to impose conditions on yourself so it's important to maybe memorize those those too if you're a player who often does so. You might want to press on without a long rest or travel an extra hour even if it causes exhaustion. You also might want to simply lay down prone for cover because you know you know the enemy will only try to hit you with ranged attacks.

    Always pick up a little flour. You can get it in any town or inn, throw it at invisible things or on the ground to make them easier to detect, or use it to amp a fire spell. Though, if your GM disagrees with that last one, avoid providing a real life demonstration, lest you blow up the entire room.

    Worth noting for the more acrobatically inclined characters out there, the standard rules as per PHB for escaping a grapple is not a straight up strength check; it's the grappled target's *choice* of either a Strength (Athletics) (which may be better for them than straight strength, if they're proficient), OR Dexterity (Acrobatics). In most cases this is contested by the Strength (Athetics) of the grappler to hold onto them, however, many monsters that have a grapple effect list a specific save DC in their block instead.

      Same goes for petrified, paralyzed and unconscious (ends spell concentration automatically) - and to a lesser extend charmed (as you can't harm the target, any concentration spells harming your enemy break) as well as being grappled by a mage slayer (which is a feat, but that's getting into the dirty details)

    Has anyone been that guy yet and pointed out that the prone part had a slight mistake? PHB states that "An attack roll has advantage if the attacker is within 5 feet of the creature." It does not differentiate between melee and ranged, in theory you can attack with ranged weapons at short range, while you would cancel the adv out due to disadvantage on melee range ranged attacks; TLDR: technically not as black and white as implied. Also not all melee attacks happen within 5 feet either, polearms exist. I only bring this up because it literally happened in my game on Tuesday and we had to look it up to be sure. I know this is more meant for low level players and DMs, but still sort of incorrect if they take that as PBH truth. Love you guys, love the content, keep it coming. Sorry I might be that guy.

    • @Wolfrover
      @Wolfrover 3 роки тому +1

      That's correct, the writer made more than just the "torpedo" error. Prone's actual effects are as follows:
      * The Prone creature has disadvantage on all attack rolls.
      * Movement is reduced to Crawling: 1/2 speed normally, 1/3 in difficult terrain, but standing up (costing half your movement speed) ends the condition anyway.
      * Attacks against the Prone creature from within 5 feet have advantage. Attacks against the Prone creature from farther than 5 feet have disadvantage. This means that there is no inherent disadvantage for ranged weapons, so using your bow against a Prone creature from 5 feet away gives you advantage on the attack roll, while trying to hit with a ten-foot pole, proverbial or not, imposes Disadvantage.

      So, you are right. While it doesn't specifically say they don't suffer from exhaustion (which it DOES for sleeping), it's pretty clear that you can't suffer from malnourishment if you don't need food... (by the way: food and drink exhaustion is special anyhow, because it can't be removed by sleep, magic or potion; it MUST be removed by eating or drinking - and it gets worse over time, meaning the second day without water gets you TWO levels [for a total of 3 levels], but we're getting into nitpicking only survival style games need to dig into)

    The editing on this one is PHENOMENAL and really kicked this up to a 13/10. i find conditions truly the hardest part of dnd to follow (as both a player and a DM) so this was a very good, easy to follow with understandable explanations. far easier to follow than the LITERAL TABLE OF CONDITIONS in phb and dm screen/guide. Marisha's montage style title for each condition gave a SUPER quick, inferable meaning for each condition that the word themselves don't necessarily give.
    Something I noticed on this video (perhaps because of Marisha walking off screen?) but the simplicity of the white backdrop really makes the rest of the video stand out on the youtube layout - the white on white/seamless effect is great for immersion, and makes it all feel like sketches on a whiteboard (which I guess was probably the intended effect, similar to the frame in Critical Recap...)

    5:05 If you read the book text for *prone* condition, it does not mention *melee* or *ranged* attacks, just the distance!
    > "An attack roll against the creature has advantage
    if the attacker is within 5 feet of the creature.
    Otherwise, the attack roll has disadvantage"
    Correct me if I'm wrong, and overlooked some other ruling; But this is how I run these special scenarios:
    A *melee* attack on prone creatures will have disadvantage if the attacker decides to use the "reach" of a melee weapon / ability, attacking with disadvantage if attacked from 10ft+.
    A *ranged* attack on a prone creature within 5ft is rolled as *normal* (advantage from prone condition, but disadvantage on ranged because of 'ranged attacks in close combat rule'), unless the enemy 5ft within you is incapacitated.

    6:11 Important note missed under Grappled, you can defend against a grapple attempt with a Dexterity based Acrobatics check, and of course wriggle free from it with said Acrobatics check.
    E.g. your noodle armed rogue is not entirely screwed if they get grappled.

    Slightly important distinction: ranged attacks vs prone target. It's a distance based thing, not a weapon based thing. If you are 5ft away from a prone opponent, you attack with advantage. Longsword, crossbow, whatever. However, making a ranged attack while adjacent to a hostile creature imposes disadvantage. So unless they are incapacitated, unconscious or asleep, the disadvantage and advantage would cancel each other out and you would make a straight roll.
    Recently, I had some players attacking a sleeping opponent, and I learned this.

    • @sebrussell
      @sebrussell 5 років тому

      To add to this, the 5 ft rule also means that attacking a prone creature with a reach melee weapon from 10 feet away is also at disadvantage (and doesn't get you a crit against paralysed/unconscious creatures either)

  • @mcdonb2

    Very nice video! There is one rule mistake I noticed. Any attack against a prone enemy has advantage within 5ft. So if you attacked with a crossbow within 5ft of a prone enemy, you would have advantage from the prone effect. You would also have disadvantage for performing a ranged attack next to a hostile creature. So overall it would be a straight roll. Also, all attacks made greater than 5ft have disadvantage. So if you attacked with a melee weapon that has reach from 10ft away, you would have disadvantage

    I play a Tiefling Druid/Warlock multiclass (she died and was resurrected by a nature spirit demon-type entity so she felt like she had to work with said entity after that and became a Warlock to them) and actually played her as such from the very start (I took her from an old campaign to a new one with a new group) and even though I've played her for a while, this video was still very dang helpful! Oh yes my party ran into 2 Roppers, we were two levels higher then them but somehow these things managed to not only grapple every single one of us even our deathbot but also managed to kick our butts so much that said deathbot went down for the first time and was surviving all the stuff we threw at them for way longer then they should have. We started to call one of them the God of Roppers because of how lucky and how much damage it did and was
