It was nice of Taliesin to translate this out of the original Sumerian.

“Scary muscles”
Yasha in 2 simple words.
Thanks Goth Uncle, as a DM this is good for me to remember on what skills to call for certain actions
+
There is a hidden Con skill: holding your breath! 1 minute + Con modifier. No rolling involved but Con will let you swim underwater to access a city's sewer system. And you may even find an enslaved water elemental used to power the city there... Just say'n.
thats a save not really a skill same with concentration checks
Not a save since there's no rolling or DC. You get the Con modifier as minutes plus 1 minute a character can hold their breath. Not really much different from other actions that require skill checks except no rolling involved. And unlike non-skilled things like normal movement, opening unlocked doors or reading known languages, etc., Con stat affects how well you do it, which varies just like most skills across a party.
@@MegaMelonSun Concentration uses saving throws, not ability checks. So if you have CON proficiency (Fighter or Sorcerer) or take the Resilient (CON) feat, you add your proficiency bonus to the saving throw against the damage you took (DC = half the damage you took [with a minimum of 10]). You could also take the Warcaster feat to get advantage on your CON saving throws to maintain concentration.
Yeah, I know Barbarians get CON proficiency, too. They also can't cast or concentrate on spells when raging. So they don't really count here.
Actually didnt they get that elementals favor?

Talliesin, Thanks for the quick guide on the skills. Very informative without being too verbose. Cheers!
The intimidation as strenght variant rule can apply to other skills and ability scores, if your DM thinks it makes sense. It's not very common, but it could happen 🤔
i always go with the intimidate strenght ( i smash part of a wall as a threaten to do the same to his skull)
or intimidate charisma ( i describe the horrible things i could do to him if he doesnt awnser my questions)
yeah, sometimes I ask arcane trickster to make sleight of hand
with intelligence instead of dexterity when using mage hand, and I call it "make a sleight of mage hand check"
Try looking at it like this:
Step #1: Player declares action by stating an intention (what their PC is trying to do) and an approach (how the PC is trying to do it) rather than naming a skill like they were pushing buttons on a vending machine. Look at Marvin's approach above.
Step #2: DM decides whether the rules are even needed. Don't skip this step. It'll save you a lot of time trying to work out - for example - what the DC of a PC flying by flapping their arms is.
Step #3: If the action could could succeed but could fail, the DM decides which Ability it falls under.
Step #4: Only then does the DM bring Skills into it to decide whether a PC can add their Proficiency Bonus.
As an example, a PC lifts a footpad off his feet by his throat. She demands to know where the merchant's wife is being held. Could work, but it could fail, so we need a roll. What Ability is being used? Strength. Does the action fall under a Skill? Sure, Intimidation. So the DM tells the player to roll a STR check and add their Proficiency Bonus if the PC is proficient in Intimidation.
Another example that comes up on the stream is when Matt's brain gets to #3 and realises that the action requires memory and knowledge, so it's INT, but doesn't fit into any particular Skill (eg. current events). No biggie. Straight Intelligence roll.
Is that helpful at all?
@@marvinhubregtse5776 I would rather allow them to make a atheletics check to get advantage on the following Cha (Initmidaiton) check,
Like intelligence for sleight of hand or wisdom for nature? I guess as long as the DM allows it! Maybe in certain situations.

Don't forget the ettiquete of using skills at the table. Tell your DM what you want your character to do. The DM will tell you what skill to roll for.
If two different skills could be used, your DM will ask which you prefer. Don't just say "I want to persuade this guy into telling me the secrets to the dungeon."
there is something even worse, when the players start rolling left and right, and randomly shout something to the DM. "I rolled a 17" "the fuck are you even doing? Did I tell you what to roll for?"
Generally yes, I do think it's better to handle things this way, but there is something amusing about players practically shouting "Insight check!" when they think the DM is having an NPC lie their butt off to the party :)
@@pdegan2814 I am proud of my players when they ask the question " Do I think this guy is being honest with me?"
I think its disrespectful to the DM to just blurt out "Insight check!" However, as in all things, your milage may vary.
It's fun when we see the CR table shout it out (especially Laura and Sam), but that is at their table. We KNOW they have respect (and fear) for Matt as DM.
Shopkeeper: Hello welcome to...
Players: INSIGHT CHECK!
It's acceptable to say 'I want to climb that wall.' Then the DM ask you to roll an athletics check. Then how you climb the wall is described.
So why isn't it acceptable to say 'I want to convince this guy to tell me the secrets of the dungeon.' Then the DM asks you to roll a persuasion check. Then how you persuade that guy is described.

Thank you Taliesin! You know, I still feel I have things to learn playing this game, and you've definitely just taught me a few things. I love this Handbooker Helper series.
I could just listen to Talisen for hours...
The variant rule can be applied to all skill checks; The intimidation (Str) is just the provided example. Another example can be when performing surgery, a medicine (Dex) check can be used because of the precision needed to perform the task. It's an optional thing, but it can cause some interesting interactions, since if the rule is applied in your game, the players can mix and match as long as the DM approves of the matches made.
He mentioned the variant ruling on using Strength in place of Charisma for an Intimidation check, but this variant application of Ability/Skill combinations can apply in other situations as well.
From the PHB -
Variant: Skills with Different Abilities
Normally, your proficiency in a skill applies only to a specific kind of ability check. Proficiency in Athletics, for example, usually applies to Strength checks. In some situations, though, your proficiency might reasonably apply to a different kind of check. In such cases, the DM might ask for a check using an unusual combination of ability and skill, or you might ask your DM if you can apply a proficiency to a different check. For example, if you have to swim from an offshore island to the mainland, your DM might call for a Constitution check to see if you have the stamina to make it that far. In this case, your DM might allow you to apply your proficiency in Athletics and ask for a Constitution (Athletics) check. So if you're proficient in Athletics, you apply your proficiency bonus to the Constitution check just as you would normally do for a Strength (Athletics) check. Similarly, when your half-‐‑orc barbarian uses a display of raw strength to intimidate an enemy, your DM might ask for a Strength (Intimidation) check, even though Intimidation is normally associated with Charisma.
Part of his power as an ancient God means that I automatically feel soothed and trusting whenever Tallisen does a video
This was awesome, man I could listen to Taliesin talk about D&D any day :D
For what it's worth, the Strength Intimidation is a solid example of something that could be applied to other skills as well... maybe not always, but in some situations. For example some performances are decidedly dexterous. Maybe they even involve pain and Constitution can FINALLY get in on a skill check!

No, it's an _ability_ check, there is no skill associated with initiative. However, because Jack of all Trades says it applies to all ability checks it works anyway.

José Henrique Oliveira Silva No, Beau is the evil one. She said so on Talks.
@@JustinWPruett i Saw, but that doesnt mean that Fjord is good.
Remember, kids: The base stat listed in the skill is only a guideline to help the DM. It's just as valid for your DM to ask for a Medicine (Intelligence) check (an Intelligence check, adding your Proficiency bonus if you're proficient in Medicine) to determine the cause of a stab wound as it is a Medicine (Wisdom) or an Investigation (Intelligence). It also gives the DM some leeway to give you just the right information. Like what the wound may have been intended to do.
Also, don't just ask to "Do a XX skill check". Say you want to do something (and be descriptive about exactly how you want to do it) and let the DM figure out the appropriate Skill and Stat for you to roll. Presuming the roll is how you break immersion.
I love Taliesin and his stile so much
I'm trying to make my first ever character by myself and this is a lot of information to take in, especially so quickly- Boy i hope being the "new player" at the table isnt annoying 😅

Klepto lifestyle. Sweet sweet loot. Sensing a common thread here.
7:05 Some interesting examples for the variant I've come up with:
- Trying to blend in with the crowd in a party? Charisma (Stealth) check
- Performing a particularly physically demanding dance? Strength or Dexterity (Performance) check
- Distracting someone enough to steal their coin purse? Charisma (Sleight of Hand) check
Do you have any other good ones?
He needs to do audiobooks. Very pleasant voice for story telling.
Can’t wait for them to cover magic items
Why was his rendition of “Intimidation” giving me serious Cowardly Lion vibes?? “What makes a muskrat guard his musk? COURAGE.” 😂
The deception description was spooky. I once used disguise self + deception to pretend to be a guard's dead twin brother. I later lived to regret it, because the temple soon saw through my lies and I DESTROYED that poor guard mentally and spiritually. My party never let me forget it. I'm one of those players who has a tendency of having my actions turn into table memes.
I don't even have time to watch this right now, I just opened it to see his outfit
Driving a motorboat is a Survival check, according to Taliesin Jaffe.
I need taliesin to do audiobooks
Akin to the Intimidation with Strength rule, I also like to run a variant WIS Religion wherein it's less about objective knowledge about world religions and more about your own connection to your faith. This means Religion can be used to ask yourself if you are acting righteously in the eyes of your deity, figure out which ceremonial herb would best suit the occasion, or in the most intense case commune directly with your deity, mayhaps even ask them for a favour.
Highly recommend for roleplay heavy campaigns featuring a devout party and themes of religious identity or the interactions between pantheons 👌
great info! will rewatch
10/10 performance check Talesin!
the strength for intimidation is a good thing to do. Sometimes the skill there using dont really use the same stat, my fav example is I was DMing with a bard and he would try to hide in plain sight in crowds of people all the time and like to give him Crisma/stealth checks for that.
Ooh, so literally anything is a survival check. Time to go full Red Mage with Chocobo Breeding, since there's a merit badge for everything. :p
well made love your style Taliesin Jaffe
Reminder that the Intimidation (Strength) rule technically could apply to any Skill/Stat combo, however that's probably the most used. Another common one is Athletics (Constitution), if you're trying to swim all the way to an island, for example.
But if need be, your DM could ask for anything, from Perfomance (Dexterity) to History (Strength).
Intimidation (Constitution): Yeah, *****, I just drank that bottle of poison with no effects.
