No worries at all didn’t offend - it goes both ways you are also entitled to your opinion and more than welcome to say it here - Can totally 100% see why it would come across this way. For context we film about 10 of these videos back to back at the end of a studio day so full honestly I’m just knackered and as shocking as this might be not a massive Dire Straits fan 😂 so absolute fair point it probably came across as monotone and harsh BUT we never want to put on a fake facade in these videos, this is just what we are like 😂 isn’t for everybody! Sorry guys. I respect your right to not like the music you listen to, but I don't think you have the right to bury an extraordinary drummer like Terry Williams in this way, so I didn't feel the need to watch the remaining six minutes of the video after the song ended, even though you specifically requested it in your initial statements. I'm sure I missed a lot.
First of all, this song is written on a simple theme, but it is a song that evokes deep emotions in the listener. Maybe we can call it the magnificence of small things to describe this feeling. In a way, this version from the Alchemy concert reflects the live performance of the Sultans of Swing band mentioned in the song, not Dire Straits. As you know, more sounds add mass and volume to a musical composition. Mark wanted to give the song mass and volume in this version and gave Terry free rein. And Terry did a job - perhaps beyond what Mark expected. Throughout the song, you can see the look of satisfaction on Mark's face and his smiling eyes talking to John (John Illsley, the bassist) about Terry's attacks. Pick Withers played the drums in the studio version of the song. Maybe you can take a look at him, he had a much simpler (which is never bad) style. Anyway.. Since you did not forget to give a lesson in sympathy to Terry Williams, one of the funniest men in the world, as well as his extraordinary drumming technique, we can now go back to our caves.

    • @gracefuller9981

Hi everyone, Mark Knopfler is a perfectionist and nothing in this piece is a coincidence. The drummer should have played exactly as he did. He was neither "pissed off" nor anything else. Everyone can see that he communicates very little with the drummer - he tells him that "next... at this point he wants to go into "low playing" mode... and nothing else. If that is too loud / too quiet / too fast or too slow for you... it is subjective... Listen to "Brother in arms - Telegraph Road - You and your friend... - Presence at every point in every song...

I think chaotic is a good term that was used for the first half of that performance, if you have an emotional investment into Dire Straits, you would probably love the wild nature of the drums but if that is not your taste it’s going to be hard to adjust to it.
Terry Williams also played drums for their live aid performance in 1985. The drums are still flamboyant so maybe this was the direction the band was going for.

We all are great admirers and DS and MK. We believe, as many, that Terry Williams did a fantastic job in this song, but hey, not everybody will feel the same way about everything, and that’s fine.
If I remember well, even MK would later ask drummers to play it down.
I personally love that aerobic drum version, and I love Chris Whitten 1991/1992 live performances too.
One of the greatest songs by one of the greatest bands anyway, for sure!

We were planning on doing some more Dire Straits as there are performances we both really enjoy but will be honest we’ve had some really horrible comments on here so won’t be following it up. We welcome constructive criticism and totally understand not everyone will agree with us but we don’t appreciate bullying. I thoroughly enjoyed the performance as is, even if Terry Williams' drum movements may have been repetitious to more musically knowledgeable people than me. I enjoyed the energy and the complexity of it, which may be indicative of music novices such as myself...the fast and slow movements and all included, and thought that it was one of the best guitar performances I've ever heard. But then again, I am not a musician and may react differently than more musically knowledgeable people.
But if you are looking for honest evaluation of the performance from others, why criticize the reviewers so harshly if they have an alternative view of the performance? Debate or question the reviewers' evaluation of the music, not insult them personally. Whatever their level of experience and knowledge, they disagree and we must be comfortable with that, unless we wish to hear only from those who agree with us..."yes men".
I prefer to listen and try to understand their objections and compliments of the music and still feel that Dire Straits made a terrific display of music writing and performance, especially Mark and Terry, who (as I understand it from other comments) was showing off on his birthday for his father who was in the audience. Good for him and the whole band.

As a professional musician and producer who plays multiple instruments, including drums and guitars, I can see where someone would be put off by the drumming in this live version. There are moments where the drums are just too busy, too forward, and repetitive. It reminds me of one the first bands I played in with a lead guitarist who tried to throw EVH licks into every song. I’m sure all pro musicians go through a evolution of learning the importance of taste and restraint - serve the song first everyone will get their chance to shine. Listen to the studio version with the original drummer. The drumming is finessed and tasteful, serving the song. I can also understand why the band evolved this song into a bombastic, arena rock closer. It’s an incredible performance and a different animal from the classic studio version. I love the the live version, but sometimes find myself saying “settle down, Beavis” to the drummer. 😂

i agree, even as a kid i thought the drums were cheesy as hell. Couldn't care less how they are regarded by millions. If everyone had the same taste, music would be boring, and AI would take over. I always loved the texture of the original studio track, but i think that would only work in a small venue, not in a stadium etc. People hate that there is no wrong or right with opinions on music...but that's just our tribal dna. Good to hear an actual honest reaction.
