The 2020 Toyota C-HR is a weird, quirky hatchbacky crossover thing. Today I'm reviewing the Toyota C-HR, and I'm going to show you around the Toyota C-HR. I'm also going to drive the C-HR and show you what the C-HR is like on the road.

I love how modern Toyota design makes it hard to tell if you have serious body damage or if its just the design. That's a nice feature.
That's how I feel about the first gen Santa Fe
My moms 2018 Prius Prime has a big dent in the passenger door but you litterally cant tell because it looks intentional XD
😂 😂
My father used to say a little body damage gives a car "character"🤔
Great way to avoid the "Camry Dent"
In europe, especially here in italy, there are plenty of these all over the streets of the big cities
In Spain too
In Portugal too
Wise choice
In Finland too
Stefano Marchi belgium too
I bought one just a couple of weeks ago and I love it to pieces! Update: I’ve had this for about 11 months now. I’m 72 and with the technology there is no problems with blind spots. I love this car. I Would highly recommend it as it is high enough that there is no problem getting in and out of it. Great car.
Right?!
I'm getting one this weekend! How have you liked your car so far? :)
@@firepowerrr3 I love it it’s a limited the only thing I don’t like about it is it is black sand pearl and I’m older and at night it’s a little hard to see but now that I’ve gotten more familiar with it it’s not such a big deal. I would’ve preferred the two-tone I would’ve liked to have had blue but when I got it it was $4100 off it was a 2020 Limited with 18 inch tires.
Looking for a car for my 70 year old Mother who doesn't want a small low car But rather a small SUV that's not too high so this fits the bill in many ways. Looking at it, only concern is the visibility of the back window, how is it?
Who is this car for? To anyone who likes this car, why? I'm genuinely curious

And today I’m going to be showing you the quirks and features of my science project
He gave his own project a doug score. The fun part is he failed!
If you squint, the C-HR kind of looks like a very stylish bicycle helmet.
Erik Åhlander lol
Aha lol that’s true
It's designed by a Danish guy from Vammen. Denmark is known by their bike infrastructure. Haha fun
I can't unsee that
Hol up
This would be a Scion if Scion wasn’t discontinued

Agreed
Accurate AF
Actually when they released this car at sema 2017 it was supposed to be a 2Lt scion. So yes. And I have a 2018 2L, although it’s slow, I love it
You're actually 100% correct. The C-HR was originally built as a scion, that's why the name is an abbreviation and it's intentionally quirky. Toyota decided to give scion the axe but saved the chr design to push another suv to the market.
C-HR sounds like a name Honda would give to their cars😅
Exactly
They have the HR-V. I get those two confused all the time.
Crv
In Japan the H-RV is called the Vezel, & lots of them on Singapore''s roads are too as they're grey imports (purchased in Japan before being resold in Singapore). The H-RV is sold here too by Honda's official dealer here but the grey import version is regarded to have some advantages e.g. possibly better build quality, as Hondas sold in Japan are manufactured domestically, while those sold elsewhere in Asia (besides China) are manufactured in Thailand instead. Also, the Vezel used direct injection but the H-RV uses port injection, probably because the latter is sold in other less developed countries in Asia too (where petrol might be dirtier/more sulphurous, & which direct-injection engines are less able to stand up to)
HR-V and C-HR are both shit. I'd get a Mitsubishi ASX/RVR/Outlander Sport or Nissan Qashqai.
>Doug DeMuro: "Look at this arrow pattern that's repeated throughout this Lamborghini. Now THAT'S attention to detail!"
>Also Doug DeMuro: "Look at this diamond pattern that's repeated throughout this Toyota. What was Toyota thinking?!"
Doug: "It's not particularly fast..."
Also Doug: passing every single car on the freeway like they're standing still.
It quick enough to get you to morrisons and back.
He’s flooring it to test how fast it is
It's obviously fast enough as he's passing everyone (as you said). Slow off the line, but just fine once you get going.
That’s exactly what I said 😭
Passing doesn’t mean that it’s fast.
Fun Fact: This comes available with AWD and a six-speed manual overseas
The awd system comes with cvt transmission and the 1.2 turbo 116hp. We also have an 1.8 hybrid with 122hp and a 2.0 hybrid with 184hp.
@A real bisexual petrol-head Stop whining.
I would probably go for one of these instead of a Crosstrek if AWD were available in the States!
@A real bisexual petrol-head And you always whine about our whining!
@A real bisexual petrol-head Cars like the CH-r are usually bought by vacation car rental companies and uber or food delivery drivers in the US and not the average person so there is no need for AWD or a bigger engine but keeping it cheap for those purposes.

That sucks! 😂 My Jeep Cherokee scores higher and I paid less for it and does better in everything besides gas mileage and tech. I hope that was worth the extra money spent. I paid $4,500 for a clean Cherokee from California that's in the same condition as a 2-year-old vehicle.
Alice Zhang it’s admittedly not fast but i think it handles well and is very comfortable to drive. the full speed radar cruise is really the biggest selling point for me as it makes any sort of traffic or long drive a breeze. i have a 2018 model and i upgraded the radio to have wireless CarPlay so it has everything i need! i’ve owned it for a little over a year and i haven’t regretted the purchase at all
I love it, the first time I saw one I fell in love... I'm getting one...

11:10 - You mention the map button, then go on to the phone integration. That's one of the great things about Toyota's infotainment system - you can reassign the hardware buttons to do phone connect things! So when you have Android Auto or CarPlay active, the map button launches your AA/CP map app of choice!

I’m a Toyota dealer mechanic and worked on a lot of these. I normally do PDI on the “first ever” new vehicles to show up at our dealer, I did the first CH-R, FR-S, Highlander, RAV4, and the Zupra so I know these cars inside out, and I never noticed the design on the headliner, this is literally the first time and I don’t know how I missed it.

Have you seen any problems with them yet? Surrounding their CVT Transmissions?
@Kara Smith Depends on the generation, they generally are but the current 2019+ ones not so much. They have problems. My personal fav are the 2001-2005 model years. 2006-2012 are good. Just don’t get the 2AZ-FE 4 cyl ones as they burn oil. 2013-2018 generation is also good. They have torque converter issues but not super common. Make sure it doesn’t shudder during a road test.

The Nissan Juke: “finally an opponent worthy of my skill, our battle will be legendary!”
Wouldn't go near a Juke. My daughter had a new one and it burnt oil from the off. Service manager said it was normal for modern engines to consume 1.5 ltrs if oil every 1000 miles. Yep that's what he tried to tell me. I built Toyota engines for 9 years. Think he was telling me porkies. It turns out Nissan fitted the wrong size piston and rings into bore 3 . Poor quality control if you ask me. Toyota's quality control is the best in the world. They had there Juke returned.

My dad owns a Toyota C-HR that he bought brand new in 2017. It feels like a war tank when you seat in the back seats, because the windows are high and small. It actually feels good and it's so much easier to sleep at night driving.
The engine also has a linear power delivery and the noise is relaxing. It's a good car overall for European people.
You sleep while driving it at night?!
Paul Nieder you haven’t?! It’s the best thing to do in your car. Nothing like hitting 5 cars, 26 people, and finally hitting a tree.
Paul Nieder Are you saying this car won’t put you to sleep?
The gearbox is bloody awful. Took it out for a test drive, didn't enjoy a single minute of it. It feels like a tank not only because of the rear windows, but because it actually drives like one. I've been considering actually buying one before that
@@seaalon138 what do you mean with awful gearbox? For anyone that uses their car just as transportation it's the best gearbox. Way more efficient than all the dual clutch automatics, yes it's not good in giving an amazing driving feel, but to be as efficient as possible there is pretty much nothing better. Only thing I know if is Honda's direct drive, cause that doesn't really have a gearbox.
I just bought a 2022 C-HR for my daughter. She loves the way it looks and I love its safety features and the fact that its not fast and is also economical and reliable.

It's really a shame that those rear seat windows look like that from the inside
Yes, I went to a Toyota dealership not too long ago and out of curiosity sat in the back seat of one of these and it was horrifyingly claustrophobic in there because of the windows.
Its the same from the volvo xc40 though, so toyota isnt the only culprit. sure the chr is maybe a bit worse, there are other cars that have that
sacrifices had to be made to look cool i guess
One call it claustrophobic, I call it *cozy* ☺️
Yeah, my mom test drove one of them a while ago, and she said it was like a humongous blind spot trying to look through the rear passenger windows. If there was a car in your blind spot and you try to look at it, you would barely tell it’s there. Apart from that issue, it’s a fantastic car.
Edit: She is around 5” so that’s why it’s a huge problem. This car is like a time bomb for short people.

Apple Jelly - Doug didn't tend to go into these "normal" cars (exotics is what gets Doug the views), but with the drops in audience from the print magazines, the Toyota marketing people (this and other new Toyotas Doug gets to review are FACTORY-SPONSORED, just as in most print magazines) figured DIGITAL REVIEWERS like Doug are where the potential car customer base is moving.
This made Toyota much more willing to negotiate with people like Doug for reviews (Doug gets cheap / free content and Toyota gets "eyes" and honest opinions they can use for future R&D, so BOTH SIDES WIN).
Watch Colorado, US's TFL STUDIOS and other bigger YT reviewers get more cars from the manufacturers themselves...
At 8 minutes is when i was reminded it wasn't a Honda.

Saw one of these driving around and I loved it ! I was so curious to what this car was !!
One quirk you forgot to point out is when you unlock your CH-R, a CH-R logo is projected on the ground from both mirrors. At least that's the case for the 2018 CH-R I bought in April. And in case you are wondering, I love this car!!!
I just bought the 2021 one today. My sales person didn’t even mention the logo. I noticed it when I left work tonight. I guess the C-HR wants the ground to know what it’s dealing with? Lol. But I LOVE my car.
Mine doesnt! :(
"Is this is a crossover or hatchback?

to be fair, crossover is just a marketing term nowadays. Car manufacturers just lift their hatches and add plastic black trimmings and call it crossover. And Americans buy into it.
Hey crossover means a combination of a suv and hatchback
A crossback
Lizst Is Cool Crossovers suck.
I had to keep reminding myself that you were reviewing a Toyota. My mind kept wanting to think it was a Honda. Even the model, C-HR, sounds more like a Honda designation.
This is basically a ripoff of the Honda HR-V.
@@myscrnnm yeah, I clicked on the thumbnail image thinking it was an HR-V review 😄
I was right there with you. I kept thinking it looked like a crossover version of the Civic
I know me too, I'm actually really good at telling cars apart but if I saw this on the road I would think it's a redesigned HR-V. Especially those wheels they look very honda.
Some styling cues are also very similar to the Honda Civic especially when you look at the boomerang tail lights. We also have a Honda Civic Type R and parked in the garage next to the C-HR other, strangely you can see quite a few similarities. They are vastly difference cars for difference purposes but that is why we bought them both and love them both. Honda and Toyota are killing it and I know these 2 cars will outlast their warranties.
I’m leasing one at the end of the year. I got to rent one from hertz during a vacation I took to Miami last year and it was great.
Hey Doug, I have this exact car the same color and everything! I traded my Nissan juke for this car and I love it. The CH-R , has a very smooth ride.

Few thoughts on the car:
1) allot of people I know, prefer privacy in the back, and invest in sun-shading solutions. But when a car make does this… it’s claustrophobic for the bloggers (basically all of them). loool
2) from the safety point of view, in the back, if you have a big part of the door metal near your head, protects you - in case of an side impact - much better than a piece of glass. ;) (this is huge imho)
3) while sitting in the back, you can put the legs under the front seats, making the ride much more comfortable, and the back seats angles are perfect (and yes, there are AC vents under the front seats).

I've seen an significant increase in the CH-R's in northern europe, or to be precise, Sweden. Almost every 20th car I see is a CH-R.
And yes, I own one.
how's that gas car tax?
Matias Kurvinen really popular in finland too, i see probably 20+ a day
Is it all-wheel drive?
Funny because I'm listening to a Swedish song while reading your comment. One Night In Dubai by Arash featuring Helena.
@@CrimLawGeek I'm American, and I have a couple German car magazines that I ordered online recently (spent a year living in Germany at one point, so I can understand German reasonably well). Anyway, according to the magazine, the CH-R is available with a 1.2 liter turbo engine, and two hybrid engine options, either a 1.8 VVT-i, or a 2.0 VVT-i. The CH-R, no matter the powertrain, is only available in front wheel drive. This is for Europe, of course, since we don't get the hybrid in the US.

Also Doug DeMuro: of its ilk.
That's a perfect summary of what the C-HR is all about @19:57. I'm definitively keeping mine.
When Doug say it’s affordable but your bank account says definitely
Toyota could've had a real winner here with this design but they just had to ruin it by giving it an underpowered engine, no moonroof and lackluster options!
Engine especially you could do without a moonroof in this segment @ this pricepoint.
And no AWD and ground clearance. What's the point of being an SUV without those 2 key features.
This so much! Loved it on first site untill i knew the specs.
@@pre-d Why though? Isn't India hot? You guys could use a moonroof to let in some breeze!
It's a shame that you don't have more engine options in the US. I am based in Europe, and here it has 3 engine options - 1.2 turbo with 116 hp, 1.8 hybrid with 122 hp, and finally a 2.0 hybrid with 184 hp. The 2 liter hybrid drives really well :-)
Guilty as charged; I was one of those car enthusiasts who accused the CH-R of being ugly and ridiculous.
But then I rented one in late 2018 in Melbourne, Australia and became a CH-R believer. Treat it as a tall hatchback, as Doug states, and it proved to an efficient runabout that was easy to park and practical. It was stable and nice to drive on country roads and even had a European flair in the solid, pinned down feel it had on the highway.
And the styling? After I garnered a number of compliments from strangers about its looks, I started to appreciate it for being so quirky. Doug is right that the interior is a little cheesy with the diamond patter theme, but at least Toyota tried to do something different. Otherwise, the interior is as user friendly as any other Toyota, just with some pizazz. A win-win
Overall, great review and hit the nail on the head
There was no mention about a CVT in my comment, so what’s irrelevant? But now that you’ve brought it up. There’s some terrible CVT’s out there. This one: not so bad
I remember sitting in a show room CH-R back in 2017 before they where released, really interesting car.
I really dig the the design, especially with that color. The thing that chocked me the most is how cramped it was inside. The Mazda CX-3 is the given choice in the segment though.
‘Hidden’ definition:
Webster’s: kept out of sight.
Doug’s: placed in another visible location.
I see, a new meme format in development.
CubyDoesStuff I’m happy to lend a hand :)
Those cars are literally every where in denmark and i know that because i live there 🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰 great video. So now you know that you got a subscriber from denmark.
Hello fellow Dane.
A Random guy do you have one in your bathroom?
Uuuuhhmmmn i guess not 😂😂😂
Did you know a Danish car designer is in the team behind the C-HR? Cool to see I'm not the only Dane here ^^
I work at a Toyota dealership in Denmark and I can confirm that yes, a lot of C-HR's are sold.
have the 1.2 turbo awd in georgia, eastern europe. perfectly fits the conditions here: awd for the snowy winters in the mountains, compact size for narrow old towns, cheap to run and easy to maintain, consumption between 7-8 litres.
Fun fact, the designer was inspired by diamonds because of their beauty and strength so he hid them throughout the car
"Crossover" has the same size as a Golf almost.
Compainies have shrunk the suvs these day too much.
Can't wait for a Smart Suv.
Would be cool
No fucking way I'm riding in a smart SUV, especially if you jerry rigged new layout for the smart car
Companies are marketing hatchbacks as cuvs now
@Fin Gen I thought you were trying to have a dig at Americans when you said smart left. Smart as in brains not the car.
Just google Suzuki Ignis...
1:03 In Estonia we get several engine options: 1.2l Turbo 2x4 and 4x4 drive versions. 1.8l Hybrid and 2.0l Hybrid Dynamic Force, both are with 2x4 drive. =)
So it is a crossover. =)
I’m driving one right now as a rental. It looks nice. It has blackout wheel and ski roof rack. It feels nicer and upscale then it is.
I love my I have a 2018 gray one it’s great on gas and goes good in the winter and has been very reliable
