only agree that mazda's interior designs are more attractive than others, but the built quality of their vehicles are in par or even below mitsibushi or nissan if you get a good one out of a good batch, otherwise premature failures occurred in less than 2, 5 & 7 years of owning a mazda: engine mount leaking, transmission control module & speed control module failures, all sorts of electrical issues shut that a vehicle shut off ramdonly & power steering was disabled, & frequent burnt out of light bulbs in the glovebox or in the interiors. these failures should not have occurred so frequent in a car that's less than 9 years old or in the said years above. i'll not consider buying another mazda for my next car. also the so called "fun to drive" is very subjective just because most car reviews said that the rest just parroted.

My parents used to own honda cars but upgraded to Mazda SUVs (CX 5 and CX 9 both top end trim) and the CX 5 has been going for 5 years no issues at all and the CX 9 has driven for a year with no issues, my mum did sell the CX 5 for a Lexus NX300 F Sport because it was getting old and she wanted an upgrade but the car carried full passengers, full heavy loads in the boot and went for heaps of kilometres with literally not even one issue in 5 years of heavy daily use. Now after considering a RAV4, CRV or CX 5 I've after heaps of research and a few test drives, bough myself a Mazda CX 5 Akera and compared to the RAV4 and especially the CRV it's got way better performance and handling and the interior feels amazing compared to the other 2 along with way better cruise control and lane keeping assist. Also compared to Mitsubishi the build quality on the interior feels better with more solid parts that feel like they won't break or rip off even if I tried my hardest to break them, one of the things Mazda does best is actually build quality and rigidity. And people say Mazdas are fun to drive because they perform better than competing cars, and they do have better turbocharged engines and steer better so I wouldn't say that the statement is incorrect although it is subjective. Mazda is more of an entry level luxury brand than a average consumer brand, with cars that feel wayy more expensive than Toyotas or Hondas or Mitsubishis or any competing cars for the same price, they may be priced a bit higher on the versions with nicer leather and real wood but that's justifiable. Unless the Mazdas in america specifically are super super shit compared to Mazdas anywhere else, everything you said is wrong, I know many other people with Mazda cars and have never head of the issues you're speaking of.

Old comment I know. But yes, absolutely this. Drive a Mazda 3, then drive a Corolla right after. The difference is insane. Their cars in general feel much more enthusiast catered, even the most mundane of vehicles they produce. They also always feel much sportier than comparable vehicles.

coming from a mazda owner, I personally love the wheel for the screen. once you get used to it, it becomes second nature. it also allows you to change every setting in the car without getting your arm tired.
Christian Morgan Agreed. I took this vehicle for a test drive and I figured it out immediately. Mazda knows drivers need to focus on driving and cut down on distractions. But then Doug says a lot of things that don’t make sense. You get used to it. Also, there is enough room in the rear seat for most people. Dougs measurement is having a 6’3” person in the front and a 6’3” person directly behind. Not typical for most users so not a good reference unless you are a family of Dougs.
@@brianrainey2739 I do agree with you in the sense that his points aren't always accurate for most people. Mazda certainly makes their cars driver focused, wether it be the entertainment system, to having a true automatic transmission and not a CVT.
Agreed 100 percent! Also, when I get I to a different car and hate how I have to reach my arm so far to turn my volume up( I like my seat all the way back) vs my Mazda 3 where the volume dial is so conveniently placed where my arm is already resting on the side. Mazda did a great job with their interior
The absence of a touchscreen is actually one of my favorite things about this car. Especially when driving down bumpy roads, I tend to get a lot of misclicks. Also as someone who REALLY likes haptic feedback, that's lacking on most cars so it's hard to tell if you actually did what you wanted to do. I also really like the positioning of the screen on this car for things like GPS and radio.
I think the problem is though, most car manufacturers today are doing both. Giving the owner or driver the option of one or the other. Haptic feedback from a wheel, and giving the option of a touchscreen at the same time. Mazda for amazing as all the other features and options they offer...it would be nice to have both options available to the driver or passenger. Like imagine if you want your passenger to set your destination, it would be kind of difficult for them to lean over and reach for the rotating wheel that is designed to be accessible to the driver to adjust really anything on the screen. The scroll wheel is a great feature that many other automakers are more and more using, but the option for a touchscreen should be up to the driver, not the car company. They are in some instances far more efficient at interaction. ESPECIALLY for address entry. Sure there is voice input, but with road noise, possibly kids or other adults in the vehicle making a lot of noise, it really isn't always the best option. Having more options for interaction is certainly better than less.
Mazda is killing it! Finally a premium car for non-premium price. Got CX5 6months ago, tried everything else in that price range, nothing comes even close..especially when it comes to quality in and out, sound insulation...which you wouldn't expect from them just a few years ago.
We've just bought the Mazda CX3 as we wanted a small crossover. I can't wait to pick it up next week! We've owned Mazda's for about 15 years. Every car we have owned has been great, they never let you down, always start come rain or shine. Our last Mazda was a Mazda 3 2ltr Sports Nav, a beautiful car but hubby is 6' 3" and had problems getting in and out, so the CX3 works better for us.
Justin Luttrell you realise these aren’t engine dyno figures right? The fuel efficiency are on road numbers, I.e they take into account the curb weight.
MangoVisionn what? I don’t think that was his point. There were already cars from the 90’s that were already getting amazing fuel economy figures even by today’s standards. The advancement in engine technology, particular in efficiency has improved significantly, but it’s offset by the ever increasing weight of modern vehicles.
I bought a 2023 cx30 and it’s so under rated for the price. I don’t want a huge suv for when I go to work, but I don’t want to have a tiny car that can’t fit much. Good mix without being awful on gas mileage. Plus it’s super reliable and fairly fast. The price is unbeatable
Another reason to go with this class that folks don’t often talk about is parking. I suppose you can get used to parking anything, but I live in a really congested area where many parking lots are small, the spaces are tight, and the parking area is just a few feet from a busy road. So I appreciate a small vehicle with good packaging and features.
this!! it's really all about what a car does with the interior space that it has that's more important than anything, not just the pure amount of space. doesn't matter if you have the storage space of a uhaul if u don't need it or if it's not usable.
I've had a CX-5 since July. It has the same dial to control the infotainment, but it's screen is touch as well. I never use the touchscreen. I bet I've touched the screen 2-3 times total. The dial is just right there, and I don't have to reach up to the top of the dash. As to entering GPS destinations, I use Carplay and Siri. I've never used the included GPS.
Jason Hoff same here. Drove a Mazda 3 for 2 years, used the touch screen once. The jog dial is spot on. Don’t even need to look at the screen to do stuff.
@@NoteFromSELF I think 2020 they removed the touch capability. My 2019 CX-5 definitely has a touchscreen. Actually, it only works when you're going under 10 MPH.
@@H0FFER Ah. My sister and I drove the Mazda3, CX-30 and the CX-5 yesterday. I had only been in the CX-5 until the CX-3 came out. (I don't need a lot of space.) In sport mode it was crazy, especially for the segment and the price, without having to shell out for turbo. I was waiting for the Toyota FT-4X to be released but will most likely buy the CX-30. It handled wonderfully.
What pisses me off in my Cx 5 is the amount of times you have to turn the dial in order to change the radio station, for exaple touch screen would be better there, other than that Im prety used to the dial and it is safer plus no finger marks on the screen :)

Lightly used Mazda 6's are already pretty low priced, much less last gen (mid 2010s) Cx5's. Trending towards the mid teens for a fully loaded Grand Touring trim it looks like...
it's significantly more frustrating to use a touch screen while driving. I don't know why this is so difficult for Doug to understand. Imagine typing shit up when you're bouncing up and down on your car. Totally pointless
nevermind that its shown that it is over 10x longer to look away from the road to use a touchscreen vs just turning a knob. Its actually a safety measure even if a "bit inconvenient" at first, it forces good habits
I figure typing at all while driving is A. a bad idea and B. difficult no matter what. Idk if you could manage muscle memory with that dial, but if you could, I'd agree.
@@diplomatofthesosbrigade931 Mazda wants you to use voice recognition--either the built-in infotainment version, or Siri / Google Assistant in CarPlay or Android Auto. You shouldn't have to use the dial to manually type much of anything.

Bought my first Mazda last fall. It's true about the infotainment rotary dial. At first it was weird, but over time, you beging to learn the "patterns" so you don't even have to look away from the road at all. Any time I drive my wife's Jeep, I find myself staring at the screen longer to find the Burton I want to push. Mazda is correct - it's much less distracting not having to touch the screen and poke around.

Daniel Kemnitz Dougs scoring is useless. He needs to give his scores relative only to the cars in that segment. If this is the best in the segment give it high scores. @@johanneswielenga6902 The CX30 has comparably more equipment and more upscale features than its pricepoint rivals, so there's no reason it would depreciate more than others in its class, most likely the opposite - and small subcompact crossovers generally dont have much depreciation anyways, it's not like a merc than can be expected to lose half its value in 7 years. Of course all this should factor into the value score, but Doug seems to forget all sense of common logic when putting that score down, it's like he's rolling a dice that only has the numbers 5, 6, and 7 on it.
I think the current generation is okay, but it is definitely a step up from the previous generation which I found to be hideous. However, if they were to do a wide-body AWD 6spd Mazdaspeed3 much like the TCR, I'd seriously consider upgrading to it.

I love Mazda they are doing so much under the radar. They are the ultimate underdog across the board. Doug I commend. You do very detailed and balanced review keep it up man
I agree with Mazda about touch screens. Buttons enable lots of tactile feedback when using infotainment systems, which also allows many common functions to be memorized and inputted without even looking. After a few days driving an Audi A4, I can say im extremely comfortable using the infotainment system which is controlled with a wheel similar to this, I can't say the same for my brothers GTI or my father's Accord even though I drive both very frequently. I think touchscreens shine using Android Auto and Apple Car Play though, so I think a combination of physical buttons with some touch controls are really the best
My wife and I just drove one for the first time, a 2023. It is amazingly quiet and the seats are very comfortable. Plus the normally aspirated engine now makes over 190hp.
A real bisexual petrol-head That’s your opinion. I think the new 7 series looks awesome. Imposing and expressive. The first 7 series I’d have over the S class
Turn signal clicking volume adjust is an amazing feature to make available to the driver. I wish more cars had this. The harsh and loud clicking of the turn signal can literally dissuade me from considering some cars.
I think Mazda kinda buried their Mazdaspeed division. At least in Europe the last MPS car I know of was the second last generation of the Mazda3 which left the market in 2013....
Hey Doug, I'm a mazda salesman myself, you missed a pretty wild quirk, theres a subwoofer in the spare tire, I discovered that just this morning, I was hoping you would talk about it but oh well lol
I know some Nissan’s have those as well. I had to take apart an older Murano once and I was confused as to what that weird device inside the spare tire was.
I just bought a CX-30 for myself and thought I'd chime in with my own 2 cents re: the infotainment system. I, like many young folks my age, grew up surrounded by technology. The fact that all 2021+ CX-30s (and to my knowledge all but the base trim of the 2020 version) come standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay means you don't need to spend any time faffing around in the infotainment system if you don't want. Android Auto/CarPlay replace the built-in infotainment system. The voice button on the left of the steering wheel calls up Google Assistant/Siri when your phone is connected. I can control pretty much everything by voice without even looking at the screen, and the few things I choose to use the center dial to control are quick and easily accessible. The clicky feedback on the dial is great, it's super reliable and I never misclick, which is my main gripe about using touchscreens in cars. Plus, by ditching the touch aspect of the screen, Mazda is able to place the screen in a much more convenient viewing position, and it's not constantly covered with fingerprints the way a regular touchscreen would be. I totally get why this is a controversial design choice but I have really grown to love it.
Thank you doug! Both of my card have been mazdas and i tought you would only do supercars, very expensive cars but no you came to the basics of what the automotive industry is ... cars that will be there for the family, those who will take the kids to school, hockey practices and dinners at grandmas I am very pleased with this video!!

Those LED fading turn signals is what Mazda calls "distinctive light pattern" when I first saw one of these on the road i couldn't believe my eyes. it looked like leds but had the incandescent fade in and fade out, just a little faster on the fade in though. i did some google search on it because it was so creative!
Thank's Doug, I didn't even know this existed. I was set to go look at a Honda HRV. I will check this out this weekend for my Daughter. We already have 2013 CX-5 with 180k on it and love it.
Hi Doug, part of the performance is Mazda's excellent automatic transmission. It has a sport mode and even a manual mode. The torque converter is basically for 1st gear crawling, with it locking up in the other ratios. This also contributes to the fuel economy. Mazda also bucks the turbo trend and rather gives a larger displacement naturally aspirated engine.
It actually has 8 inches ground clearance, not 5. That’s quite good. Even if you never take it off road, that’s great for never scraping on ramps, speed bumps and parking lot curb stops.
Jingzhou Hong Another reviewer said 8 inches, but 6.9 inches isn’t 5 inches as Doug said either. Still enough to not scrape on things lower vehicles commonly scrape on in town.
I rented one of these and drove it from Chicago to the woods of Northwestern Michigan and I loved every bit of it. The vehicle was built with such high quality materials and just felt very nice. I would definitely buy one of these.
They are absolutely right about the click-wheel for the screen input. I have a 2020 Mazda3 Hatchback and it is significantly less distracting that way. I wouldn’t want it any other way.
I have a 2016 Cx-3 adaptive cruise, and even though I can use the touchscreen as a touchscreen... I only use the dial and buttons. I agree it's less distracting and keeps the screen fingerprint and smudge free.
in europe the cx30 has a lot more sense than in the US market: 1)The cx3 is like a compact suv while the cx30 is a mid size suv. The cx5 for Europe is already a huge boi 2)The cx3 is somehow similar to a mazda 2 while the cx30 is more like an suv version of a mazda 3 which is like a 1 step segment difference 3)Not sure about prices but i think in europe the price difference is bigger Also to justify the name of the cx 30 this is based on the mazda 3 hatchback platform so it makes sense to me to call it like this instead of cx4
I own a 07 Mazda 6 with the v6. It is weird seeing the similarities but also the improvements. Mazda is one of the most underrated automaker in my opinion.
Really? I'm rental a cx-30 for the week and my head is up against the roof. I'm having to recline my driver seat position way back further to just avoid that. The passenger side seems fine. Am I missing something. I'm only 6'2"
Also in the video, you see the screen will often suffer glare from the light of the windshield. It would be much less so, had it been place further toward the driver in the center console like everyone else.
Well, I was totally impressed and bought this. I live in Italy, Note: motors are different sizes here No turbo, But still fun to drive and takes corners like it is on rails. Enjoy
Touchscreens r very dangerous. Hopefully u wouldn’t think to use ur phone while driving so I don’t c the difference with using a touchscreen. It’s basically just a bigger phone almost
@A real bisexual petrol-head XDDD Imagine not getting the sarcasm/obvious joke and getting heated over a lighthearted comment like that, calling people morons. Congrats, you played yourself.
Get used to it. Thank most of the consumers for only buying SUVs and Auto transmission. People who want only manuals (usually enthusiasts) are the minority in the US.
There's a difference if you need the cargo room. BUT, most of these people don't need an SUV, if you need more cargo room than a sedan, fo but a wagon. If you need more ground clearance, go buy a full size suv. If you need towing, go buy a truck or full size suv, these small SUVs aren't really SUVs, SUVs are big, bulky, body, actually capable, and have at least a v6, but mostly v8, what I'm saying is: these "SUVs" really aren't capable at all, there just suburban vehicles, if you just need to haul people, a sedan does the job just fine. Unless you have 5 or more, than a minivan or full size suv is right up your alley. Not trying to sound like a jerk or anything, but do the parents with 2 kids and hardly hauls anything and lives in a semi flat area like mine really need an suv? Oh, and I have nothing against 4 bangers, but SUVs weren't ment to have them, they do the job for sedans and wagons, but if you need to tow, you can forget it.
Re the touchscreen argument at 13:10 - Using the address entry system while driving would cause some issues if you are paying more attention to the right address instead of driving. Entering an address should be done while parked in a parking spot or driveway.
honestly i dont think skyactiv-g is given enough credit. its kinda like the modern day vtec where instead of just being a regular car in the low end and a sports car in the top end, skyactiv-g runs a gas engine like a diesel from time to time to make a lot of torque when you need it, horsepower when you need it, and all do it with good fuel economy and no turbo. Mazda created a crazy ass engine technology instead of just adding a turbo. I believe there isnt a single turbo in mazdas whole line up and not a single cvt either. mazda deserves respect for sure. Edit: correction: the diesel gas engine technology im referancing is skyactiv-X. Skyactiv-g is slightly different but still a dope engine technology
@@alext4179 i wasnt aware of that but i went and checked the line up and other than the turbo diesel they use turbos for a higher performance model. i was talking using a turbo for fuel economy like "ecoboost" or what honda is doing making tiny engines with turbos. Pictures & images can be deceptive. I was pleasantly surprised (as someone who prefers smaller vehicles) to find that the CX-30 has a smaller street footprint than a 2020 Corolla Sedan & pretty much the same as the 2020 Corolla hatch.
I like the non-touchscreen personally. As long as it has Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, that's what I would be using for navigation. Also, you want to set your destination before you start driving. The most you should be doing while driving is changing the radio station/volume, which the physical controls are fine for.

Unless the Mazdas in america specifically are super super shit compared to Mazdas anywhere else, everything you said is wrong, I know many other people with Mazda cars and have never head of the issues you're speaking of.

coming from a mazda owner, I personally love the wheel for the screen. once you get used to it, it becomes second nature. it also allows you to change every setting in the car without getting your arm tired.

Every "compact" car with a decent audio system has one of those
I just bought a CX-30 for myself and thought I'd chime in with my own 2 cents re: the infotainment system.
Both of my card have been mazdas and i tought you would only do supercars, very expensive cars but no you came to the basics of what the automotive industry is ... cars that will be there for the family, those who will take the kids to school, hockey practices and dinners at grandmas

in europe the cx30 has a lot more sense than in the US market:
1)The cx3 is like a compact suv while the cx30 is a mid size suv. The cx5 for Europe is already a huge boi
2)The cx3 is somehow similar to a mazda 2 while the cx30 is more like an suv version of a mazda 3 which is like a 1 step segment difference
3)Not sure about prices but i think in europe the price difference is bigger
Also to justify the name of the cx 30 this is based on the mazda 3 hatchback platform so it makes sense to me to call it like this instead of cx4
The CX-3 has been discontinued
5nbo me not here in europe
Nah I'd rather get one of the Nissans, they look a lot better. This has too much black plastic on the bottom.
I own a 07 Mazda 6 with the v6. It is weird seeing the similarities but also the improvements. Mazda is one of the most underrated automaker in my opinion.
Dougathy, I like leaning back in my 3 and resting my hand on the dial rather than lean forward and reach out to poke at the screen.
Beautiful car! I‘m tall and 45. I tested both 3 and CX-30. I sit so much better in the CX-30, and in- and out is waaaay easier than in the 3.
Really? I'm rental a cx-30 for the week and my head is up against the roof. I'm having to recline my driver seat position way back further to just avoid that. The passenger side seems fine. Am I missing something. I'm only 6'2"
Beautiful exterior design of this new Mazda CX 30 👍👍👍
Doug: "let me give you a few examples"
Goes ahead and mentions one example. 😅
marius n m jensen Plus, you should be typing in for navigation before driving anyway.
Also in the video, you see the screen will often suffer glare from the light of the windshield. It would be much less so, had it been place further toward the driver in the center console like everyone else.
I got my CX-30 a couple of months ago, and so far I love it!
Well, I was totally impressed and bought this. I live in Italy, Note: motors are different sizes here No turbo, But still fun to drive and takes corners like it is on rails. Enjoy
The touch screen navigation thing doesn't make sense, who puts in an address while driving?
Hopefully nobody lol
I would think by now most people would be using their voice via CarPlay and Android Auto to enter destinations.
anew742 ikr
In the 2016 models until they got rid of the touchscreen I know Mazda disabled all touchscreen controls whenever you went over 3mph or so
Ford disables a lot of features when moving too.
Touchscreens r very dangerous. Hopefully u wouldn’t think to use ur phone while driving so I don’t c the difference with using a touchscreen. It’s basically just a bigger phone almost
Found a quirk at 5:30. The engine has two secret cupholders on top!
@A real bisexual petrol-head XDDD Imagine not getting the sarcasm/obvious joke and getting heated over a lighthearted comment like that, calling people morons. Congrats, you played yourself.
@A real bisexual petrol-head yeah, what a brainwash idiot he is isn't he
@A real bisexual petrol-head sometimes i do fuck morons.
RJ lol I C what u did there
Ugh, I'm so tired of the industry's focus on crossovers.
Bring back the GT sedans.
A real bisexual petrol-head you sound like a fucking loser.
@A real bisexual petrol-head Sounds like something a fucking loser would say
Or hatchbacks.. I really don't understand this trend lol
12:04 THANK YOU! I've been saying the same thing for years.
Touch screens in cars are dangerous.
Re the touchscreen argument at 13:10 - Using the address entry system while driving would cause some issues if you are paying more attention to the right address instead of driving. Entering an address should be done while parked in a parking spot or driveway.
Mazda engineered this engine for Uber drivers that want to overtake you at every red light
honestly i dont think skyactiv-g is given enough credit. its kinda like the modern day vtec where instead of just being a regular car in the low end and a sports car in the top end, skyactiv-g runs a gas engine like a diesel from time to time to make a lot of torque when you need it, horsepower when you need it, and all do it with good fuel economy and no turbo.
@@ConLLee the cx5, cx9 and mazda 6 all have a 2.5 turbo option, even turbo diesel in the cx5
Lol
@@alext4179 i wasnt aware of that but i went and checked the line up and other than the turbo diesel they use turbos for a higher performance model. i was talking using a turbo for fuel economy like "ecoboost" or what honda is doing making tiny engines with turbos. Mazda has NA motors competing against eco turbo motors while having more horsepower and nearly the same mpg. After thinking about it i did know about the mazda 6 turbo because a lot of people saw it as a potential comeback of "mazdaspeed".
@2WIREG that was a really interesting response
>crossover
>fun
upd: I watched the video and now I like it
Why do you like it? It's still garbage even though it's the best crossover.
@@kirbyswarp I will be completely honest with you, if I were to have a daily, I'd have one of those even if I'm feeding into the ever-growing market of crossovers, even if I'm helping with "tHe dEmIsE Of tHe SpOrTs CaR".
@@bombardier6033 Ooook but why? _Why would you do that?_
@@ilpatongi because it's a sensible choice?
@@bombardier6033 It was a meme but ok
Only on Doug DeMuro , I watch a 20 minute video about a Mazda
the video on your channel is hilarious :D
I own a 2015 Mazda 3, I have the option of touch screen and dial, I always use the dial. I can drive and count clicks of the dial to know where I am at.
I have a touchscreen only I added to my 01 Montero Sport, I wish it had a dial.
Pictures & images can be deceptive. I was pleasantly surprised (as someone who prefers smaller vehicles) to find that the CX-30 has a smaller street footprint than a 2020 Corolla Sedan & pretty much the same as the 2020 Corolla hatch.
Mazdas are the most reliable cars on the market, I’ve always been a Mazda lover🚗
Lexus, hold my beer. 😂
No time to broke rust eat the car before that!!!
@@stevesmith1731 I've got 2008 and 2017 Mazdas with no rust issues. Am I doing something wrong? I live in TN where it rains 3 days a week.
@@theonlyrobot you dont stay in canada!
Robert Newby the snow and salt just eat em up.
Thank you Doug for this excellent content, You're number one PERIOD!
Mazda has been putting out some really sharp looking vehicles these days. Great job Doug, as normal.
I like the non-touchscreen personally. As long as it has Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, that's what I would be using for navigation.
Also, you want to set your destination before you start driving. The most you should be doing while driving is changing the radio station/volume, which the physical controls are fine for.
Mazda: Let's name this CX-30 to make it less confusing.
Also Mazda: we've launched a new SUV in Japan and named it MX-30.
