I found your channel after reading The Book of Mormon Girl: A Memoir of an American Faith. I was given the book by my college professor, and I was impressed by such an avant garde combination of historiographic metafiction and YA romance. as you are learning at around 17:00, chatGPT is essentially just answering whatever it thinks is most likely to be the "correct" answer, meaning whatever voice is the loudest. AI doesn't do research. Re the marriage and age thing: in these types of cults, I mean religions, it’s ALWAYS an old man marrying teens and young women, not vice versa. I haven’t heard of any wherein women of my age (50-something) trying to marry 15-year-old boys. That’s just disgusting whether done by men or women 🤮 Glad y’all made the AI exmo list 👏👏👏
I've probably already said this in another comment but you guys are soooo articulate, quick-thinking, informed, sympathetic/empathetic, and intelligent. With some wit. I'm so impressed...
You were having an ongoing conversation on Mormonism, ask a question concerning marriage practices at the time and place of the church's founding, and are surprised by the AI being able to make that connection? When you asked the question about coercion, you framed it in such a way that it gave you an answer defined by today's society and attitudes. Love your channel.😊
Tanner's mission was in Brazil? Say, did you by any chance convert my hs biology teacher? She's one of the like two people that I know of who are mormon.

I played on chat, GPT for a while, trying to understand its parameters and something that I discovered is that it tends to favor some resources over others I think, for example, a probably 10 so look at the churches official website for information rather than some non-official sources. I wouldn't be surprised if it looks at articles and favors websites with higher SEO. I'm also guessing there are more church created articles on these controversial subjects then there are post-Mormon articles. Also, as you noticed, it tries very hard to not be biased either way. It’s also a free resource and doesn’t dive too deeply into any subject.
Not if they aren't paying tithing. Then they're barely a number. As a former missionary who was set on a former member who'd strongly voiced her resignation before I got there, I'd guess they may still even count those who've resigned but haven't threatened lawsuits for harassment.
@chlyri752 A big part of it is numbers.. if they don't have your name and number and you've erased your identity whether through lawsuits or whatever.. then that's the only way that they won't count you as far as I know
@realbedo They'll keep tabs on you through family if they can. I wouldn't be surprised if they kept names of everyone that has left, just with the stipulation not to contact them, if they've kicked up enough of a fuss.

Gotta be honest. AI freaks me out. I understand it’s just pulling data and regurgitating it from the web. However when I was really tiny, before I even was in grade school I had this nightmare… it’s one of the most adult dreams I had as a child. In fact, I was an adult in the dream, and I’m standing in this circular platform that wraps this tower like structure. I know that I am there because the leaders have dictated that everyone in the world must have a copy of their mind recorded to be fed into a computer that has been designed to amass knowledge and use that knowledge to think for itself. The goal of the leaders was that this was to know the mind of God. I’m terrified. Dream ends. It’s stayed with me for years. When I was LDS I was convinced that this was a vision of the real Tower of Babel. Even now decades later the whole dream still wired me out, especially having it when I was so young. So oddly I became phobic of AI before it was even a real thing. Just the musings of sci-fi and nightmares so it seems.
In my experience, these bots are only as good as whatever sources the yend up using at whatever moment. They will say contradictory things based on what sources they are using, especially if you don't start a new chat session, because it will remember the topic you were on before and might pick sources similar to the ones it used before. So if you are researching religious things, and it used some apologist sources before, you really need to start a new session for it to be more likely to pick secular sources.
Funny use of a chat bot 😂. However you should remember that this is not a fact database with a magical ability to intelligently link facts together. It is only a very complex text predictor. In other words, it's basically just a convincing bullshit generator. It happens to be right most of the time because it used Wikipedia data to train, but it doesn't even try to find the right answer, it only tries to be convincing. It says stuff an average person could say
(Hi I'm a Data Engineer) Bots like this are trained on documents accessible from the internet, so the LDS-sympathetic talking points are likely ripped directly from LDS apologetics online, since that's likely most of the internet-available text on the subject. If I had to guess the discrepancies are basically attributable to the volumes of pro- vs. anti-LDS content that it can get access to
ChatGPT: "Missionaries of Faith and Love" is a young adult novel about two young male Mormon missionaries, Elder Johnson and Elder Smith, who are sent on a mission to a new neighborhood. They soon meet a young single lady named Rachel, who is immediately drawn to their good looks and charming personalities. As the missionaries begin their mission, Rachel becomes more interested in getting to know them personally, rather than learning about their religion. She tries to spend more time with them, even inviting them over to play basketball and other activities. However, the missionaries remain focused on their mission to share their message with Rachel and the community. As Rachel spends more time with the missionaries, she begins to see their dedication and passion for their faith. She also starts to question her own beliefs and values, leading to a personal transformation. Through their interactions, Rachel, Elder Johnson, and Elder Smith all learn valuable lessons about faith, love, and the importance of staying true to oneself. Throughout the novel, readers will be captivated by the characters' personal journeys and their unique perspectives on love, religion, and self-discovery. "Missionaries of Faith and Love" is a heartwarming story about the power of faith and the connections we can make with others, even in the unlikeliest of circumstances.
