Many years ago I owned a Mk 1 Golf GTi, and I thought I was the bee's knees in it. While driving at night in rural Cheshire with my then girlfriend, I saw a white Capri ahead of me. Still thinking I was the business, I rapidly gained ground behind it, confident in my overtake. The Capri had a big spoiler at the rear and I thought it was just for show. The driver of the Capri let me get close enough to read a discrete badge saying Turbo Technics, and then the back end of the Capri dropped down, and before I could blink, had disappeared into the night. Feeling like a boy who'd just had a slap, I then heard my girlfriend was quietly laughing, and telling me that I'd been taught a lesson. She then told me that she thought a Capri was much nicer than a Golf. It just wasn't my day, or night for that matter.
I'm saving (still) for a Capri. I owned a few in the past I've saved £3000 so far and I'm soooo gutted I didn't manage to store one away from many years ago. I'm 51 now and whatever model I get is FOR LIFE . In 1991 a T reg (1979) Capri 1.6 was my first ever car for £180 . I care not for the haters and their "bag o cement" comments (most that come out with that are just jealous they ain't ever owned one). Driving a Capri of any model is real driving. I love these cars and always will.
I remember driving with my mates to Southend for a cruise, belting along in a 1.8ltr Astra GTE. I was just going on a sliproad onto an A road and i was going pretty rapid, already over 70mph before joining the A road. All of a sudden i heard a engine roar beside me and looked across to see a Capri roaring past. I also clocked that instead of the usual Capri power bulge this had been cut out and there were the decals i noticed on my favourite car of the time. That decal said 6.6ltr! It was the `shaker hood` of a Pontiac Trans Am Firebird! Seeing just how quickly that Capri shot off into the horizon and completely out of sight i`d say that certainly wasn`t just a pointless brag but in fact the truth of the engine swap!
its nice that you finally got it,knowing the v6 it will start once the fuel delivery is sorted,i was going to ask a question but you and kieron answered it in the vr6 following the transporter back,i can see by your face you love the car,i will be watching the progress especially to hear it start up.
Had one capri back in 1993 - All I done was wheelspins and eventually it fell our with me so I scrapped it. My old man had one too and he fell asleep one night behind the wheel and when he woke up he was all disorientated, yeh when he woke up the car was pretty much on it's roof. IF I ever landed a lottery win etc I'd really love a Brooklands, that's the car I really fell in love with when I was growing up, I still remember seeing a brand new one in a ford dealers in Manchester back around 1983/84 - I stood inside watching it go around and around for about 40 mins, it was love at first sight.
I've had four of these , awesome cars there really special, wish I had one now, there going up in value so much even a rough one is expensive, all the best with your project, thanks for sharing the experience.
Great to see this vid and pleased you got uour car after many years. I am still looking for my turbo technics from new reg D322MTT. Must be out there somewhere and only 51000 mikes at last mot in 2008. Hopefully it will turn up one day fingers crossed
I purchased one of these in 1996, with the 200 hp turbo kit. I ran it in that form for approx 2 years, then sent it away for much modification, (by what I later found to be a scammer). It came back with the 2.9 twin turbo Turbo Technics power plant fitted, from a Sierra of approx 1990 vintage. I sold the old turbo kit to some HGV driver who passed nearby where I was based at the time. I still have the original 2.8 engine. 27 years later, I still own the car, a little sorry for herself now I'm embarrased to say, (thanks to the aforementioned scammer), but she's still my pride and joy and they'll have to bury me in her. The only other car I'd like more is a De Tomaso Pantera. Good luck with the restoration.
Chris comes across as a properly genuine guy. So nice to know there are still decent people our there. Can't wait to see it's journey back to roadworthiness. What atecyour plans, mate? Hopefully to keep it as original as possible! 👍
Plan to do a big Chevy v8 swop , :D joking lol , yes keep all origanal , just found some mint period tyres , just looking for someone that would be able to sort the drivers seat out
