The concept of Obsession goes back to the storyline of EXO. Essentially Exo in their universe are from another planet (guardians of the Tree of Life), they each have super powers hence the action scenes in the mv. In Obsession u can see good EXO and evil exo called X-EXO, clones made by the villain of the story the Red Force. The theory however goes that these clones are the EXO members themselves but corrupted. Overall i think the song talks about fighting our own demons. It's so interesting to see the different meanings that branch out from the storyline ❤
And, as theories say, their clones were created when they were kidnapped during "Overdose" & "Lucky On".
I rarely smile as big as I did when I threw that theory into the world and the lyrics seemed to back me up hahaha, but as always, these are just my opinions and my interpretation of the song. LOVED IT!

I love your theories in the lyrics but me my self if I didn't know better about their story line, I think it's about bipolar disorder and honestly when you have your time to dive on this obsession album, it's a roller coaster emotions.

I really love your theories, the best without knowing EXO debuted in 2012 with subunit EXO-K & EXO-M with storylines & concepts since the beginning till now 2022 (10 years). EXO still the best Kpop boy group for me eventho members leaving still staying stronger.

It can also be a song aimed at crazy fans (saesangs); from the repetitive “I want you” to their response of “I don’t think so, shut up and go away”. I like that it can be interpreted any way we want no matter the ongoing, since debut, concept and storyline.

Obsession was the last song Exo made as a proper full album comeback, since the members went to serve at the military. In 2021 the remaining members gifted us a mini album Dont Fight The Feeling mv I recommend you check next just to be in order. It's a feel good song that came out in the times of the pandemic so you will enjoy it ❤ sadly EXO wont be having a comeback with full members any time soon with more members going to the military and some returning so they are focusing on their solo careers that u dont want to miss out either 😊😊

-Group Concept: They're aliens from EXO planet (planet outside our solar system), and they have the concept to say that basically the members have skills and talents that are out of this world, and you know what? It's true! EXO is known as *"The Vocal Kings of Kpop"* cuz *all* the members are *amazing singers* (regardless the position they hold whether it's main vocalist, main dancer, or main rapper), and no other (male) groups do *harmonization* like EXO! They're also *The Kings of Live Performances* being the artist who holds the record of having *"the fastest sold-out concert in the whole world"* where the tickets for their concert was sold-out in *0.2 seconds* with around 1 million people trying to buy the tickets at the same time. They're also the only group whose members are all individually successful across the 3 big industries: Music, Acting (Movie, TV, & musical theatre), and Fashion/Beauty. As a group, they're already *legendary* even before the other groups you know that are viral today, they've broke records here and there, they have *hundreds of awards* in their pockets! And as individual artists, EXO members have accumulated more than 130 awards among themselves with their individual careers across the entertainment industry. So yeah...the amount of talents and skills in EXO is *out of this world* which makes their alien concept isn't far fetched. And they're *top tier artists* who always give amazing quality of works whenever they release something, either within the group, or individually. And they're also *the most versatile* group in every aspect, from their music, concepts, and styles. They've done everything (perfectly)!!!
-Group's Storyline: They came to earth to fight the "Red Force" (which is their enemy) that's trying to corrupt/destroy the earth. The "Red Force" has a lot of different forms, they even can be a "doppelganger"/" bad version" of EXO members like what you see in this video.
-Group's info: EXO debuted in 2012, had 12 members initially, but along the way, 3 members left the group, and then 1 Chinese member couldn't be as active in the group as before, since around 2017, bcuz of the conflict between South Korea and China. And since 2019, EXO members have been taking turns in fulfilling their duty as civilians, to join the military for about two years, which is mandatory for all South Korean male citizens. So don't get confused if you see different numbers of members, or even different members popping up and then go missing in other videos.

Yes. EXO. loved your analysis of the lyrics. This group has a long standing storyline . The group started off in 2012 and started out with the storyline of them being Aliens from EXO-Planet who is in a constant battle with the Red Force...Their story line is in every MV and even sub-unit MV's and solo MV's. They each have unique Super Powers....anyway you picked up on the story line pretty well. Hope to see more reactions to EXO...EXO Mama, would be a good start to pick up on start of the storyline, but I think you'd like EXO Monster, if you havent' seen it already.

as always you manage to get a perfect grasp of the meaning behind the songs. i really like the fact that you are not a passive listener but instead go deeper into the hidden meanings behind some lyrics. in s.korea the issue of "sasaengs" is quite problematic. they consider themselves as fans, but they are not really fans, their obsession for their idols exceeds the boundaries of what is allowed and they assume stalker-ish behaviours, even violent ones at times. this song, among other things, talks about that --- and you totally got it.
I am soo happy rn cause you checked EXO!! They are absolutely incredible. And as always you interpreted whole MV along with lyrics so well. You were kinda right about toxicity in themselves when "The turned-on exit light, Is me looking at myself in the mirror" lyrics came. Since EXO has storyline going on since 2012 about them being aliens comming from exoplanets to fight Red Force on earth. Red Force comes in soo many different formes or shapes, as robots, androids, cubes and like seen in Obsession MV, own EXO clones but dark, evil ones called X-EXO. You were absolutely right, EXO is preparing for war, war with evil clones of themselves. So EXO really feel like they are looking themselves in mirror (clones) but in same time they aren't. Also I'd like to add that EXO members has superpowers given since debute. Chanyeol - fire, Baekhyun - light, Xiumin - frost, Lay - healing, D.O - earth/force, Sehun - wind, Suho - water, Kai - teleportation and Chen - lightning/thunder and you can see them showcasing their powers in all MVs. Thank you so much for reaction and for next one I reccomend checking EXO - MAMA MV since it's their debute MV with origin story in beggining. The MV doesn't have lyrics but you just HAVE TO read them or choose some fanmade video with lyrics. MAMA lyrics are very important! yes you got that partly right, they are fighting their evil counterparts, they named it X-EXO, so its EXO vs X-EXO concept. They are fighting their own inner demon. Basically their debut concept are they are aliens from outerspace planet named EXO Planet & they have superpowers. In this video their evil counterparts also have same power. The one who was fencing has power of LIGHT ( Baek Hyun) , the one fighting himself with fire has power of FIRE ( Chanyeol ) , the one in the water has power of WATER ( Suho) , the one with the lip ring has power LIGHTNING ( Chen ) , the guy with arrows has the power of WIND ( Sehun ) & the one who has crop top on has the power of TELEPORTATION ( KAI) . The part where the guy turnes to stones is actually all water removed from his body by Suho as humans are made of 70% water, so he became full of holes.
Thee build up to this release was insane. EXO and Xexo (the bad EXO) had Twitter accounts and were advertising their side of the release. Absolute madness. This is a concept come full circle.

I watch so many exo reactions videos yet you were the reactor who got the closest to understanding the actual meaning of the mv with no info about exo prior just figured it out based on the visuals and lyrics that's really cool! I think the lyrics and the meaning of the music video lend themselves well to many forms of interpretation. I have heard a lot of theories about how it relates to their storyline, and that is backed up mostly with the MV and their physical albums, etc. The lyrics though are very applicable to a lot of situations. I think Obsession is something that we all struggle with at some point, and you are right, it is very easy to become obsessed with ourselves. They are quite clearly battling themselves, so you aren't wrong, but there is no one version of write or wrong with the meaning of any of EXO's videos. Their story has been being written for 10 years and they are still making it more and more interwoven and complex. It's legit the most epic concept/storyline in all of Kpop...which makes sense, since they are the group that started the idea of "concepts"

obsession is actually roughly described supposed to be about their dark side of themselves (however u want to interpret it) that wants to take over their good side of themselves but they want to get rid of their dark side :) so they're basically fighting themselves

On point bro...There are 2 Exos in this video..regular Exo in the black, if you will, revolutionary Exo..who are fighting X-Exo, the gory make-up, colorful outfits, dopplegangers...
Because Exo follow the concept of being aliens, and each member with a superpower (Baekhyun is light, Chanyeol is fire, Suho is water...)
...the video incorporates the evil forces known as The Red Force, who have been chasing them through the universe, and found them on Earth disguised as humans, (although Exo came to earth to protect and preserve life using their powers, seeing all the destruction and turmoil on this planet, knowing The Red Force's goal is to destroy life, and steal their powers for bad), and Exo is basically fighting the demons, or bad traits and temptations that all humans have to do..because the longer Exo are in human form, the more they learn human traits, bad or good. And in this video, The Red Force sends these evil clones to not only battle good Exo, but influence them to succumb to the darker temptations humans may have.
And they are essentially battling themselves. The burning planet at the end signifies a hold of destruction by The Red Force on Earth...is it 50/50? Maybe. But well called bro.👏👏👏

I love EXO's concept and I would recommend their Obsession album because I feel like this darker sinister side of their concept is very compelling and the lyrics are just masterpieces and the soundscapes are stunning. Especially I would like to see your reaction to the song Jekyll which continues the battle depicted in obsession mv
What you saw in the "Obsession" MV was that EXO's doppelgangers were actually their alter ego clones and they were using their superpowers, such as Chanyeol with his fire power, Sehun uses his wind power to deflect the arrows, Baekhyun uses his power of light as a saber in the fencing battle, and Suho (the one with red hair) controls water in the room with all the pictures of water, etc. to fight their other selves. You see the planet on fire in the end of the MV because it's supposed to show how the world is coming to an end as EXO (the good guys in all black) and X-EXO (the evil ones in the colorful outfits with crazy hair and makeup) battle for control, etc. (Each of the members are playing 2 different characters -- there are only 6 people in this MV.)
X-EXO has been created by the evil Red Force and EXO and X-EXO are fighting each other. EXO are trying to prevent X-EXO from taking over and corrupting humanity and X-EXO are trying to stop EXO from finding the Tree of Life and putting the two halves back together and restoring peace, etc.
To truly understand EXO you need to understand that EXO debuted in 2012. "Mama" is EXO's debut song and MV and It is how EXO was introduced to the world and it explains the group's concept -- and since then, everything SM Entertainment does branches off from that storyline. From day one, EXO's concept is that they are aliens from planet Exo and they came to Earth with superpowers to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces. Each of the members has a superpower that is unique to them and almost every MV will have at least one, if not all of them, using their powers.
Now you also need to know that In the beginning there was 12 members and they were split up into 2 groups EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K sang and performed their songs in Korean and EXO-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese. EXO-K had 6 Korean members and EXO-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members. So to really understand their full origin story you have to watch both the K and the M version of "Mama", because the EXO-K version focuses on the K members and their powers and the EXO-M version focuses on the M members and their powers.
However, since then, 3 of the 4 Chinese members have left the group (short answer to focus on their solo work back in China) but there is still one Chinese member left, Lay. (Any performances or MVs you watch that took place prior to May 2014 you will see all 12 members.) However, now -- because they no longer have enough Chinese members -- they no longer do separate promotions, but they still produce almost all of their MVs and main songs in both Korean and Mandarin they just now promote all as one big group EXO with 9 members. However, in the "Obsession" MV there are only 6 members -- Suho, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, Kai and Sehun -- because 2 of the members -- D.O. and Xiumin -- are on hiatus during this comeback as they serve in the military; and due to the political issues between the Korean and Chinese government, Lay -- their Chinese member -- was unable to participate in activities with the group.
So each new MV or project from EXO tells another part of the story, and over the years we fans have started to create a timeline and idea of what we think each part of the story is telling us. However, the introduction of "Obsession's" part of the story really threw all of our theories for a loop and it has made us question everything we have ever thought was happening in EXO's storyline.
The MV starts out with the red and blue light because it's supposed to represent how EXO are currently battling with X-EXO and the Red Force for control. In EXO's MVs when you see red light or anything that is red, this represents the Red Force, and when you see blue light or anything that is blue, this is thought to represent EXO. Therefore, when you see red and blue in one scene or purple -- red and blue mixed together make purple -- this is showing how the line between the two sides is being blurred and they are fighting each other, etc.
Since "Obsession" some think maybe EXO has been trapped somewhere from the very beginning and it has been X-EXO that we have been following all along. But I think it's still even more complex than that. I think at times we have been watching EXO and at times we have been watching X-EXO -- with the release of "Obsession" we have only just discovering that the story hasn't necessarily been showing EXO the whole time.
With the new information provided to us through "Obsession," it also makes me question how Lay fits within the X-EXO/EXO storyline. Maybe he is one of the members who has been able to break free or avoid the Red Forces' control. In Lay's solo MV for "Sheep," the Allen Walker relift version, we see everything burning outside as if an apocalypse is happening. Maybe "Sheep" is showing us the planet burning from Lay's viewpoint, like we see the world burning at the end of the "Obsession" MV.
Also, I believe that the storyline in "Obsession" is connected to SuperM's debut "Jopping" MV storyline. If you pay attention to what Baekhyun and Kai were wearing in "Obsession," those outfits are very similar to the black outfits that Baekhyun and Kai are wearing in the "Jopping" MV. Kai is even wearing the same backpack parachute in both MVs. Which seems to be SM Entertainment's way of making sure we see the connection between those MVs. So it is thought that, as part of SuperM's storyline, EXO has gathered the best of the best of SM's groups -- EXO, Taemin/SHINee, NCT/WayV -- to help them battle the Red Force and maybe eventually take down X-EXO. Just like the Marvel Avengers come together as individual superheroes with their own storylines to create the Avengers and to fight evil, it is thought that SuperM is coming together to create the ultimate supergroup to help EXO fight the evil and corruption inflicted on humanity by the Red Force.
Unfortunately, to make it even more difficult to understand, each part of the story is not necessarily in chronological order, so we as EXO-L (EXO fans) have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of all of their teasers, MVs, song lyrics, albums, concert VCRs, choreography and even live performances and piece it all together to understand the story behind it all. And not only are EXO's and SuperM's MVs and storylines connected, but pretty much all of SM's groups have storylines and concepts that connect together, which is designed to become part of one giant graphic novel or movie in the SM Culture Universe.
To help you pinpoint the powers being used in EXO's MVs and live performances, here is a list of the members and what their special power is.
EXO-K
💦 Suho (Kim JunMyeon) is the leader of the group and he is a lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control water (Fun fact: Suho in Korean means guardian, as in the guardian of EXO. That's why as the leader of EXO, his stage name is Suho.)
💡Baekhyun is a main vocalist and his superpower is the ability to control light
🔥Chanyeol is the main rapper and lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control fire and his spirit animal is the phoenix.
🌏D.O. (Do KyungSoo) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control earth (dirt) which gives him strength/force
☄Kai (Kim JongIn) is a main dancer, lead vocalist and sub-rapper and his power is teleportation (Kai means opening as in a door or gateway, so his stage name is meant to symbolize his role in the group.)
🌪Sehun is the youngest member of the group and he is a lead rapper, lead dancer and a vocalist -- his power is the ability to control wind
EXO-M
❄Xiumin (Kim MinSeok) is the oldest member of the group and he is a lead vocalist and lead rapper and his power is the ability to control snow/ice (frost)
🦄 Lay (Zhang Yixing) is the Chinese member of the group, he is a main dancer, lead vocalist and rapper -- his power is the ability to heal anything.
🌩 Chen (Kim JongDae) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control thunder/lightning/electricity

🐉 Kris was the leader of EXO-M he was a main rapper and vocalist -- his power was the ability to fly and his spirit animal was a dragon (Kris left the group in April 2014.)
💭 Luhan was a main vocalist and his power was telekinesis (The ability to control things with his mind) (Luhan left the group in October 2014.)
⏰Tao (Z.Tao) was a lead rapper and vocalist and the martial artist of the group, so he did the flips and stunts in the group's routines. His power was the ability to control time (Tao ended activities with EXO in August 2015.)

A bit late but subscribing because EXO hello! Yes phenomenal is the only word to describe my boys. They slay vocally, visually and performance wise. Their concept is mind blowing and all MVs are linked to their concept. i haven't checked but im sure there are fellow EXOL who have already given you a summary of it. Another song that has a very interesting video is EXO - Monster.
Now, that song has lyrics that don't necessarily relate to the MV. But the MV itself tells a very good story.

You are right they are fighting themselves, specifically the x-exo or the evil clones. Exo has concepts, one of them is that they all have superpowers and they were being chased by red force. The red force are the one who creates the x-exo or clones of exo.

I rarely Subscribing to any reactors coz mostly of them they just gonna play the MV and say they liked the video and music is good and that's it, call it a day. But with you I really appreciate on how you pays attention to the details on the video with the lyrics and give your different theory. So yeah you'll be the first reactor here on UA-cam that I'll subscribe on
It's really cool if you will watch their stuff in consecutive order. 2012 MVs are basically the intro to the main storyline. 2013-Growl MV is just them being normal boys, as EXO. 2014-Overdose, the EXOs were locked in a maze. 2015-Call Me Baby, the teasers in this era showed that X-EXO has arrived on Earth and they are not yet used to using their powers. In the actual Call Me Baby MV, the EXOs were moved to a basement. Love Me Right MV, it's X-EXO just exploring Earth. Then in Monster MV, X-EXO were captured but they were able to escape, thanks to Baekhyun. In Lucky One MV, you'll see that EXO were taken to this lab and they're being experimented on, my theory is the red force scientists used EXO's powers to make X-EXO stronger. Lotto MV showed that the experiment was successful and they were being reckless and all because they still can't control their enhanced powers.Then the next MV which is KoKoBop, EXO looks like they were high or drugged. I think this MV just shows their hallucinations through the process. And then in Power, X-EXO is battling a robot, which I think is a simulation for the X-EXOs to get used to the powers that they gained through the experiment. But in Power, Baekhyun was not with the others and was only shown at the end, and he's floating somewhere. Maybe because he is not really an X-EXO (this is actually part of EXO's comics and this is the ending so idk what happened too lol). Then in Tempo, EXO are still trapped in the Red Cube by the Red Force. Love Shot, they were able to escape finally. Obsession, both EXO and X-EXO met and fought, as a result the Earth died. Don't Fight The Feeling, EXO left Earth and is currently exploring. THIS IS JUST MY THEORY LOL
