In this episode of Did You Know Gaming we take a look at some facts, secrets, and history of Wolfenstein 3D. Wolfenstein 3D was developed by id Software and was inspired by the 1981 video game Castle Wolfenstein. In Wolfenstein 3D, the player assumes the role of William "B.J." Blazkowicz during World War II as he escapes from Castle Wolfenstein. Wolfenstein 3D was the second major release by id Software, after the Commander Keen series. The company decided to shift from the family-friendly Keen to a more violent theme for their games, with programmer John Romero suggesting they remake the 1981 stealth shooter Castle Wolfenstein as an action game. The game was designed to be fast and violent, unlike other computer games on the market. Wolfenstein 3D sold over 200,000 copies by the end of 1993, and is widely regarded as having helped popularize the first-person shooter genre. The game also saw success on home consoles such as the Super Nintendo (SNES). Through our analysis of Wolfenstein 3D, its gameplay and beta builds, we hope to show some of the more interesting facts we found during the making of the game so you can have its history explained.

"Texture mapped Terrence and the Green Shits" lmaoo
Seems more like Catacomb 3D to me.
I Actually Think He Was Just Joking Around With That

Sounds like a rock band
holy shit that GameBoy edition ran so smoothly, props to the coder!
Lord Owen The Third I know, right? It's impressive. And as Kyle mentioned, the extra hardware he added helped a lot; it looks fantastic
Yeah, the first time I saw it, I wasn't all that impressed, but looking at it now? It's pretty god damned incredible. Guess I just appreciate tech stuff a little more than I used to.
+Lord owen the third Why is that impressive? It has a coprocessor that does the rendering inside the cartridge.
Lord Owen The Third Yeah fr
it runs entirely on this coprocessor, the gameboy is only used as video/audio output and controller input, just like Doom for Snes runs on the FX chip and uses the console as IO...
So the main protagonist of Wolfenstein is the great grandfather/ancestor of the Doom Marine (and kicked the future Cyberdemon's ass)? I guess pure badassery runs in the family....
Indeed it dose.
Does that mean The DoomSlayer is descended from those chicks in the new Wolfenstein game, or is the DoomSlayer a separate character then the Marine in the first two games? I'm about hazy on doom lore.
@@iguanaboi3921 People usually say the reboots are different people but Quake Champions says that Daisy was Doomslayer's pet so they could be the same person
@@iguanaboi3921 Doomguy and DoomSlayer are different persons.
Deniz except in doom eternal you can put on the classic suit and I think the tag line for it is “still fits” which implies he’s the same person as the original doomguy
"It's too realistic"
I mean, it's just kinda funny. This game was incredibly advanced back then.
Please do an episode about Quake, Quake is by far my most favorite id software title
I second thee Quake request.
+1
I think they did but im not sure.
Quake 2 wasn't even going to be called Quake at first
It's logical for such a video to be made. The seminal Wolf 3D and the monolithic DOOM series have already been covered. Surely the standard for all true 3D FPS should next be explored.

Texture-Mapped Terence and The Green Shits for GOTY
I always loved how Blazkowicz's line descended to Keen and Doomguy, perhaps even Quake's Ranger. Deepest lore.
No, I didn't know that.
verstamp did you know?
HawkMan2132 No, I did not know that.
_(switches on lightbulb)_ Well, now you know.
Oddbrother Yes, now I know that.
And knowing is half the battle
"it's green and pissed" is now my favorite potential game title
Finally, a foreigner who can pronounce Blazkowicz the right way
As a German American I am proud of him
IKR
wait, how do foreigners usually pronounce it?
I mean I can too...
I am Indian-american.
I a south east asian pronounce the wicz in blazkowicz wick yeah idk why i said that
This game's final boss is literally Hitler.

One of the most important and greatest games of all time.

MultiTarded here, it's on the house
I agree, such a staple of my childhood.
@MultiTarded
Yes it is.
Wolfenstein & DOOM are important games in FPS history.
Dereenaldo Ambun *the games
Wolfenstein 3D was great, but DOOM is fucking legendary. Still one of my favorite games of all time.
4:34 it’s funny how he says “MEIN LEBEN!!!!”
Form gen executive: we don’t like the gore and stuff can you tone it down
Scott Miller: 🖕🏻
3:13 "It's too realistic"
_"too realistic"_
**facepalm**
At the time, it was.
“Texture-Mapped Terence and the Green Shits” that couldn’t have been considered as the actual name for the game, could it?
1:41 It should be "Dolchteufel", not "Dolchteuful". Additionally, "Geruchschlecht" makes no sense, it should be "schlechter Geruch" instead. "Shattensendener" is also wrong, it should be "Schattensendner". German fails :P
It should also be noted that "Nein, so was!" does not really translate to "Well, I'd never!".
It would rather be something along the lines of an awkward "Well, I'd never have thought!", but more like: "No, who would have thought?!" or shortest and in my opinion most accurate: "No, that's something!", an expression of surprise.
Guess getting shot can be surprising, but as a death scream it's kinda funny: "Well shit, now I'm dead. Who'd have thought that would happen today! Just great!"
"Well, I never" IS an expression of surprise.
Maybe the typos were on purpose? Like WW2 soldiers talking mediocre to bad German in old movies? Or bad spelling in wartime Bugs Bunny cartoons... And the developers kept this up in later titles? "Behold das Ubersoldat?"
aaaannnnnddddd demonetised
Huh? I don't get it!
YEAH I DONT GET IT!!!
+Awesome Puranichu It's the new UA-cam system that everyone is currently up in arms about. Basically, people are losing their monetization for anything "offensive" that isn't "advertiser friendly". Basically, you aren't allowed to make videos that depict violence, hate, death, blood, gore, and whatever choice of possibly offensive thing you can think of. This shows violence, blood, gore, nazi symbolism, and I'm sure some other things. Therefore, not advertiser friendly. If you want more info, there's no shortage of content creators talking about it.
But hey, advertisers these days are choosing morals over money, I for one think that's amazing! A successful business is one that doesn't stoop to trying to market their product to everyone they can. It's better to just keep your business as obscure as possible, too much money could corrupt them. I could come up with a ton of sarcastic "these businesses are idiots for not wanting to actually market a product over a few red pixels," but I think I'll stop there, you get the point.
So basically showing myself playing mario is bad? (violence joke hehehehehe)
Swastikas and Horst Wessel lied = big nono, and UA-cam will demonetize you if it's your video. Which can be really annoying for history videos. UA-cam cannot tell the difference between a Neo-Nazi recruitment video and a video on the history of WW2, lol.
THe funniest thing I've seen in this game was a boss walking and saying "Guten Tag", meaning "Good Day", which is a casual greman greeting.
Finally, a video that isn't about a specific character or game from a series that already had to many videos.,
And it's also not a Nintendo series as well.
I want more of this DYKG, where there's more variety and things don't feel too samey.
Sniff nice.
I wondered which youtuber/ group i was watching. :D
Sniff Sniff Did you know? DYKG recently released five videos in a row on Crash Bandicoot, Tekken, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Pepsi Man, and Katamari Damacy?
I get that they do a lot of Nintendo stuff (I'll grant that the last 5 were of Nintendo exclusive stuff, 2 of which were Smash Bros, and that's kinda weird), because, let's face it, it's easier to do, and it gets a lot of views, but let's not act like that's all they do.
I know, it also happened that i always wanted them to do more Id Software stuff, but focusing too much on Id could be tiring as well.
+sniff
you should check out larry bundy jr's fact hunt series, most of that is brand new content that's pretty far out there, lol
I definitely second Fact Hunt, Larry puts a lot of effort into research that most other video series don't(not to knock DYKG, either).
Larry being fairly older and British also makes him more experienced with a gaming scene that was pretty different to America's or Japan's in the 80's, which I think adds to the uniqueness of his series.
Hey! How about you do Heretic/Hexen next, to close off the classic Id Software games? It is like Doom, but with magic and more creative monsters and demons, oh and you are an Elf named Corvus.
It is the next series that needs to return and get a make over like DOOM, Wolfenstein: The New Order, and even Duke Nukem Forever made it to the 2010's!
Brandon Aughtman What about Strife: Quest for the Sigil?
I forgot about Heretic! Great game!
Oh yeah, the Grand Daddy of FPS.
Literally
And don't forget the great-grand daddy: Midi Maze. Who is also the grand daddy of LAN FPS games. Or Ad-Hoc if you wanna be technical about the term "LAN".
Midi Maze was important too
As a German the alternative titles at 1:40 are pretty funny. Most of them aren't even spelled right. "How do you Duseldorf" is my favorite.
Blazkowicz. Now there's a jawline to die for.
one of my favorite games of childhood. Still fun to play too
Awesome video DKYG. Those were some mind-blowing facts. Also how the hell did I never heard about that Wolfenstein web browser port?! John Carmack is a programming GOD
The added extra graphic content made me laugh. That's perfect.
"Geruchschlecht" isn't a word. "Schlechter Gerucht" is correct.
Also, Shadow Sender would be "Schattensender".
I thought the homebrew port of Wolf3D to the Genesis/Mega Drive was impressive too! Shame that it didn't get a mention in this video.
you know wolfenstein 3d was released on gba with differents from snes in gba version has nazi but soundtrack was removed
Question: isn't it weird that a Christian company calls themselves wisdom tree? Isn't it the tree Adam and Eve ate from and sinned??
Yeah, that's kind of weird now that you mention it.
What's even weirder is that Super Noah's Ark 3D is actually available on Steam. Look it up if you don't believe me.
Monster Society what's weird is that Super Noah's Ark 3D was originally planned to be a Hellraiser game for the NES.
Tree of knowledge actually
Irony!
Omg youre saying religious people contradicted themselves? How could this happen?...............
Quite the nostalgia trip for me looking at this. Wolfenstein 3D was a game of my childhood, teenage years, and college years. I'll always love the original 6 episodes!
God. I miss the late 80s-mid 90s when my friends and I would have sleepovers all the while staying up all night playing great computer games like this. The best of times.
Little known fact:
Tom Hall's (2:31) forehead was used to display images to large to fit on the computer screen.
That brief showing of Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold... that was one of my favorites growing up. Would love to see a video on that.
Both of my parents and I played through Wolfenstein multiple times and actually fucked up the track ball on our mouse because we didn't know you could use the keyboard to move 😂
Many hours spent playing this game in the early 90s. Great nostalgic throwback!
1:12 that Dell Mechanical Keyboard
I would love a DidYouKnowGaming episode dedicated to Tetris and all of its offshoots like Tetris Attack for Pokemon and other series, arguably the most well known series in the world Tetris is and it deserves a slot on this show.
If I missed it and the episodes already exists, I apologize in advance. Thank you for your time.
3:01 added secrets as a secret
I had a port of Wolfenstein on my ti-83 calculator. It had major rendering distance problems where you couldn't see across the room; but the enemies could. It was ridiculously hard because of this.
It's nice to see Kanzenshuu members pop up in other favorite places of mine! Nice work.
Texture-mapped terence and the green shits. I love it :D
"It's too realistic", He said, talking about the game where you fight Mecha-Hitler and mutants.
Wolfenstein is an amazing game. It really changed gaming forever.
ID softwares games were a big part of my childhood. I grew up playing the first three Doom games, Quake I, Quake II, and Duke Nukem 3D. I know that Duke Nukem 3D doesn't have anything to do with ID. Awesome video!
So, these franchises were big parts of your childhood?
5:50 Weird, I've been calling it "Super 3D Fuck Farts" for the past decade or so.
So nice of you guys to finally take a break from Mario, Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, and Mario to do something better! I knew these facts but always love watching vids on it, some of the best times in FPS history. Been looking for that shirt Bobby Prince has for a while now. Make more vids like this, this channel used to be awesome.
Yall need to do a video on argonaut software aka the co-developers of the super fx chip as well as the developers of the croc games and buck bumble
Cracker Jack Right about now it’s time to rock with the biggity Buck Bumble
3:37 Amazing and honest cover.
I'm so glad I watched this, I always wondered what the officer screamed when he died lol.
AHHH now i wanna play "Its green and its pissed" so damn much!
the player even looks like commander keen as an adult
"Too realistic" aaaaaw that's adorable you'd even pretend to think that.
Gotta love those MIDI tunes.
I love these videos they just really broaden your horizons a bit more
"Did you know Wolfenstein.." yes, yes I did know.
0:21 is that Mike wazowski from monsters inc in the background
Surprising that the homebrew Sega Genesis version wasn't mentioned after the Game Boy version. it's actually a really great port of the game
Correction: The Nazi theme in Wolfenstein 3D does not use MIDI. It is in a proprietary tracker format written specifically for the computer sound hardware of the early '90s. It wasn't until a few years later that the Christian game Super 3D Noah's Ark introduced actual MIDI music to the Wolfenstein 3D engine for the first time.
I came here to say that. I'm kinda upset, because if it was MIDI I'd love to listen to the soundtrack using different soundfonts :/
Punlisher: This game is too realisticly violent.
ID: Hold my beer.
The Iphone port of Wolfenstein was so awesome. It was built by hand by Carmack himself.
That music brings back memories
I played the Wolfenstein VR. I was 13 and it was during '94 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. It was not worth the $10 for the time given to play it, but it was exciting to see what those early VR attempts were like. They even had a VR PacMan setup elsewhere in that area that I tried. PacMan is much more difficult when you can't see where the ghosts are. :/
4:32 B.J. Blazkowicz:[Blast to SS with chaingun]
SS:Mein leben!
fascinating, there are a couple things I didnt know already in the vid, thanks!
4:48 This was actually semi true. Not all Germans were Nazis but they changed up the social structure of the entire country to the point where it seemed like every German WAS a Nazi, to the point where the greeting amongst casual people was saying Heil you know who.
2:35 I don't know why, but I think the hidden doors and moving walls need a comeback badly. Maybe they're in the new Wolfenstein games, I haven't played any
As a german its almost everytime funny when an not native german speaker trys to pronounce german words. I wouldn't have recogniced them if I hadn't read them, But overall, nice video.
It's kinda disappointing that the infamous "Aardwolf maze" was left out of the video...
Still waiting for the DYKG episode on the Tales series.
3:43 Somehow I'm not surprised.
Kratos Aurion Plays They had no choice.
“Dolchteuful“ (which btw should be 'Dolchteufel') doesn't translate to dagger devil, but to devil dagger. This is a significant difference I think that some of you might be interested in for some reason.
Greetings from Germany! :)
34CE Wait, you guys can actually watch these kind of videos?
Tonyair ?
hallaskog Findus I meant because of Germany's extreme censorship regarding Nazi in Media.
"devil dagger" would rather be "Teufelsdolch". "dagger devil" is correct.
Tonyair super easy, is the material educational or any for of art, then nazi symbolism is 100% okay.
(games are not classified as art so they are still banned from games) this video is educational and therefore absolutely allowed....
and even if it wasn't this video would still most likely not be blocked (only if youtube or the uploader would block it)
I remember first hearing the song "Funk you!" And I was like "ok this is a 80's song" Oh and also frick Hans Grosse in that level.
one of the first games I have ever played. I was 4 or 5 sitting on my dads lap playing this. so much fun! still play today!
You have really good German impersonation when you shouting the two lines.
I love Nintendo a lot but it's nice to see something different from time to time!
"How do you Dusseldorf" is a hilarious name actually. Sounds like KMFDM song.
I've played this game on a school chromebook and I didn't get in trouble for it. When I was playing it, I killed mecha-Hitler
so glad the narrator isn't screaming in this one
2:10
So basically the HITMAN series?
Well, I need that MEIN LEBEN as my Notification sound now.
Never realized that the box art Blazkowicz looks like a super ripped Kurt Hussell, LMAO
6:27 Ok that's actually pretty fucking awesome
Way late, but there is a Wolf3D port for multiple consoles, such as the DMG Game Boy and even SG-1000
Carmack is a fucking beast... I hate that he's no longer part of id Software :(
His engines are still widely in use today, and for who knows how long. Hell, two of the biggest titles in gaming are using his tech, CSGO and the Call Of Duty franchise. Not to mention, id still uses and has built onto the idtech engine he coded... I am so glad he was born, he really is the god of video games.
It's believed that Super Noah's Ark 3d was originally going to be a licensed FPS title for the original NES, based on the Hellraiser movies, back when Wisdom Tree was still Color Dreams. Very little evidence of the former project's existence remains, but what is known is that it would have used an NES-compatible build of the Wolf3d engine, and the player would be trapped in Hell's Labyrinth while armed with the iconic puzzle box from the movies. Using the box, they would have to solve puzzles and fend off the Cenobites and other enemies to escape from Hell. The project was ultimately cancelled due to the costs of creating the "Super Cartridge" the game would run on, and due to the fact that retailers started turning away unlicensed Nintendo products--which Color Dreams was known for developing--let alone ones that would contain mature content like Hellraiser. Soon after, Color Dreams renamed themselves to Wisdom Tree and focused on developing Christian-themed titles, and they used the rights they still owned for the Wolf3d engine to develop Super Noah's Ark 3d for the SNES.
Which version of Wolfenstein 3D was playing at 5:00?

Did you know I was playing this today. Because I swear this is one hell of a coincidence
FINALLY! Someone who can pronounce Blazkowicz!
How do you have Wolf3D running at - what looks to be- 1080p/60fps? Would love to know. Running it in DOSBox doesn't render me the above quality, and the controls are frustratingly dated.
"Texture Map Terrance and the Green Shits" would have been a great name.
id's prior 3d games (hovertank and catacomb) were not raycasters. The engine used a type of floodfill algorithm to identify near walls, transformed them into the 3D perspective, clipped them against other walls in screen space and rasterized them. this approach was more similar to ultima underworld and even doom than wolf3d. wolf3d's big optimization WAS raycasting; it combined the visibility, clipping, and even drawing into a single pass, which was efficient for hardware at the time. by the time doom came out hardly a year or so later, the hardware had evolved again and classic style clipping + drawing was the right thing to do again. but the important thing is wolf3d + spear were the ONLY raycasting games id ever made. the technique gets a lot more attention than it really deserves...
The 3 Musketeers of FPS gaming: Duke Nukem, B.J. Blazkowicz, and Doom guy.
Subscribed. What do u guys think about the Marathon trilogy? Both the story and gameplay are far superior to Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. It also came out before them. Would love to see u guys do a video on that series.
