This is Phase #4 in the testing saga. But, it is Phase #3 in the 400's build sequence regarding what I've altered. Phase 1 worked pretty "goodly". Phase 2 was a little better. Phase 3 is seen here.
As stated, working on some alternate air filter options. I went through a filter test session previously.
Also, the 400 oiler is slated for an upgrade as it lacking in the output volume. This saw would spin the 32" chain a bit better had the oiler pumped better. Stihl lw 32" bar. Wrap kit from a 362.
Miscued on the chain catcher pin line-up...
Sure wish someone out there "wooda" pointed that out and saved me from total embarrassment!!!
The 400 is in Psy-Ko S trim zippkit wise. The 500i is stock.
Taking a peak at the displacement numbers:
    ms400c-m R is 66.8cc
    Ms500i R is 79.2cc.
Viewing the bore & stroke numbers:
    ms400c-m R is 50mm x 34mm.
    ms500i R is 54mm x 34.6mm.
    Factory claimed HP numbers:
    Ms400c-m R is 5.4 bhp.
    Ms500i R is 6.8 bhp.
    Looking at the timed runs:
    Stihl ms400c-m R @ 13,980 went 13.64 down and 13.63 up.
    Stihl ms500i R @ 13,320 went 14.9 down and 14.21 up.
    400 @14,040 went 15.53 down and 16.32 up.
    400 @ 14,040 went 15.23 down, 14.63 down and 15.71 up.
It is more than crystal clear that the "Little Turkey" had the worst of it in the knot section. Held it's own and did some winning.
I'm sure well pleased at how the 400 has turned out to this juncture. Next on the list is a 661. I'm hopeful that God will be smiling on me there and the 400 will run with, or maybe a little better than the 661.
At the time of your viewing this, I may, or may not, be immediately available for custom saw modifications. I am booked out several months regularly. If you are interested in having a saw zipped, please shoot me an email. That is the best, first point of contact. danger_cat@rocketmail.com Thanks for watching.

      Robert hi.
If you want to talk older faller to older faller:
Don't get to far from camp when running a 5ooi. TOTAL fuel hogg. MAYBE 25 mins in 4 40 type wood.
      Exasperated once zipped also.
I can get more grunt out of a 461. No primer bulb to go bad in the bottom of a yarder block some cold morning.
Have to beef up the mounts (my system) to run a long bar unless you want the powerhead flopping around like a salmon on the deck.
Tree work, by all means have 3.
Guess it would depend upon the application. I can get the 390s to cut well. But they are a lot more weight. A little better balance with a long bar though.
If your not the tear up an anvil type faller the 5ooi will do just fine - back the previously mentioned spring mount (again, my version) system upgrade.
If you are in need of a lighter powerhead, the 5ooi is super in that department.
The 461s, "properly did" are probably the best option (past) if a guy could only afford one saw.
      Thanks for watching.

Don't see what longevity issues the 500i could have. Are you talking about the injection system? Stihl's TS 500i concrete cutter came out 10 years ago, lived through dust and water exposure from coolant constantly, and the electronics on them have proven to hold up over that time.

@@em4703 I never said anything about longevity issues. I did say, however, that the primer bulb is going to fail at some point. They are required for starting.
It will be when a guy is in the bottom of a yarder block. It will be 1st thing in the morning after sitting out on a cold night.
Because that is the way it goes with those types of mechanical failures.

Brian hi. This was R&D. I'm running it in stock form with some different bar lengths to get an idea on how well the original version handles a longer bar. I did go against a 562 as a comparison.
So yes, going with the .8 stroke length option 1st.
This saw will only see a 30" bar as the max length daily driver. Doubt if the 1.1 will be necessary.

      @em4703 Рік тому

Depends what you cut, if you're running a 32-36" bar cutting hardwoods, a stock 400 won't handle it. A stock 500i will. You can argue that with the difference in price you can port the 400 and get it to cut like a 500i, like the one in this video, but I don't think it balances good or oils well such long bars.

They both make awesome saws. For the $ , where I live atleast, you can get a 55cc Stihl a bit cheaper than a husky. And I'm not impressed with huskys you get at Lowe's anymore. Got first 55 there 20 years ago. Was an awesome saw. The new ones , not so much. Go to a Stihl dealer and get a better saw for cheaper than you can get a husky at big box stores.

The work you did on this 400 has certainly brought alot out of it. Stock they are not impressive. I would like to try one ported. If I may add you put the stock 500i in it's true perspective with this video as well. It's great to see the potential with these new saws when built properly, I just smile when folks say they are a powerhouse stock and there is no need to port them. Curious on your thoughts of this 400 vs one of your built 462s if a new logger could only buy one new saw and have it built. Looking forward to seeing you fell some timber with the 400.

      230 hi.
Stock: They gobble up everything else in the "60" cc class range while tipping the scales at 2nd to the lightest.
You gave me no parameters to consider - intended use, bar length, wood density, or a cost factor.
      Where the 5ooi & 661 are stock:
      The 400 runs a bit better than a 5ooi.
The 462, massaged to the same level, runs better than a 661.

@@hotsaws101 24-28" stihl es-light bars felling hardwoods (oak, cherry, hard maple, ash) I am hesitant to suggest a price range, I feel the cost of a well built saw by a reputable builder is money well spent. I recently let a friend run my ported ms361r with a high output oiler wearing a 28" stihl es-light bar, full skip with square grind. He runs a stock 572xp with a 24" bar mostly, he was thoroughly impressed with the power /weight and wanted to know what saw he could get new and have built similar to my 361. Based on my experience with the 462 and 500i and the fact he likes the auto-tune I suggested a ported 462c. Seeing the gains you made with this 400 has me thinking as it is light and good on fuel. I have yet to tear a 400 apart, what are your thoughts on the durability of the 400 vs a new 462? My dealer has voiced concerns over the 400 in that regard (piston of course) but they have been out a year now and the only issue I have seen as you did is the oiler output. I value experience over opinion which is harder to find on such a new model saw.

So, the 400 went from 5.4 to at least 6.8.
