Stihl® Motor Saw 462 vs. 461 vs. 500i All Stock Comparison

  • Filmed in March of 2020, not long after the “unboxing” session that we saw in an earlier video.
    As I mentioned, only started the 500i a few times at this point. Minimal saw testing also. Had not seen the IPL yet either. So, the guess on the bore was calculated. Based on what I knew of the 462 in essence. Ended up getting lucky there in a way.
    Stihl motor saw 500i is the world’s first “electronically” fuel injected saw but not the world’s first fuel injected saw. That was Jonsered back in the ‘50s.
    Bore is the 54mm stated. Stroke has to be, according to the math, a miniscule 34.6mm for the 500i if the factory published displacement is truly 79.2(4)cc. I initially thought it came in at 34mm even.
    North American version is claimed to have 6.7 hp. Not the 6.8 as seen in the European saw. Ironically it is the same as a Husqvarna 2100. Just for kicks, put a 42”er on both and see the differential in the timed runs. Because, HP rating isn’t everything…
    The 462 comes in at 72.20cc. 52mm bore by 34mm stroke.
    The 461 also has a 52mm bore. It has a longer stroke, at 36mm. This would be responsible for the ability to add extra pressure to the handle bars without losing much in the way of time. Displacement is 76.45cc which also helps a little in the lowend department.
    I had guessed, based on the ~ 80cc displacement number that was circulating in the beginning of the year, that the 462 was giving up 8cc. Turns out it is 7cc.
    The weights are a funny thing. Factory numbers are always lighter than anything I can ever get. There is a .9 pound differential between the 462 and 500i based on what is published. 13.0 vs 13.9 respectively. The “old school” 461 comes in at 14.8. All numbers are for the ½ wrap version saw since that is how the 500i arrived.
    Looking at the "West Coast" version, or warp handle configured saws we see 13.9lbs., 14.8lbs., and 15.7lbs. for the 462, 500i and 461 respectively.
    Looking at the high idle and run numbers:
    motor saw 462 h.i. at 13,380 went 12.50 down running 10,300 and 11.70 up at 10,200.
    motor saw 461 h.i. at 13,560 went 12.67 down showing 11,520 and 12.67 up at 10.320.
    motor saw 500i h.i. at 13,470 went 10.17 down running 11,520 and 9.40 up at 10,320.
    Caveat - we checked the 500i high idle off camera during the warm up session.
    In the end, the 500i is a couple of seconds faster than either “sibling”. Let us hope so, as it comes in quite a bit more in displacement than either of the “little kids”. Weight has the 500i in the middle. The 500i has good potential for modding as does the 461. The 462, well, it comes around pretty nicely.
    I’m currently available for custom saw modification. Please shoot me an email if you are interested.

      My 461 is woods ported... is on right now, 462 ported also is waiting in the line up... my old 460 is waiting in the dug out... ported with new rings and new carb... hard to choose.... have to say the 462 is nice to sling all day long.. less re fueling also, otherwise 461 is one monster torque machine for its weight

    I own all 3 of those saws as well as a 660 as an 880. The 500i makes the power down low in the rpm range where all the other saws bogg. Once you learn how to use the power it'll make you not want to use your other saws.

    First, thanks for a great video! Wish you threw a stock 046 or a 460 in the mix too, if you had one in stock form that is. You don’t do you??Just cause those are the two saws I run for my needs and I’d love to see how they stack up against their newer counterparts. Course then why not an 045 as well and yata yata. Lol.
    Thanks for doing what you do. You sir, are the reason I built my 046 and gave it an amateur port job when I got it for $10 at a tag sale. Now it makes me money. Thanks again.

      Thanks for watching my small offeings on YT.
      Finding a comparable (condition) 460 let alone 046 is a large feat. 045, hens teeth.
      I have run a few 460s against 461s. A little more topend speed versus a little more lowend grunt respectively. Pretty low hour saws. All seriously tuned machines.

    I was thinking the other day about my road race bikes and the Stihl saws. My 600 Suzuki had a very short stroke like the 462 and if you didn’t keep the revs up over 12k you weren’t going any where. From 12k to 14k these short stoke 4 stroke bikes were a real hoot to ride. My Ducati’s on the other hand were torque monsters which made them huge fun like my 1098 and 999r. The Ducati’s of course had almost double the ccs so maybe a stretch to compare the two but I thought I would mention it to see what you thought. Short stroke needs high rpm to produce power just like my 600. If you bogged it no power.

    Quick question I have the 462 would it be worth switching to a 404 chain instead of 3/8 ?or is the 404 only good real big saws? Sorry for all the questions

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  2 роки тому +2

      Tac hi.
      .404 chain cuts a wider kerf and has noticeably more mass.
      Unless you are gnawing on old growth Redwoods, running a 5 or 6 foot bar, felling second growth Redwoods during the bark swell season - which all equate to needing the wider kerf, I'd be using the .375 chain.
      462s are down on lowend grunt a little even in zipped form. No since in exacerbating the 462s already lagging attribute.
      Thanks for watching.

      Kevin barker , if you put a bark box on a stock saw, it’s gonna be more noise than anything, I ran a hopped up 661 with a bark box and it was a couple steps behind my insane-o 461 that hotsaws101 built, might as well send your saw to Jack and get more out of it,

    The power to weight ratio, the deeper pull, fast acceleration, and the slimmer body, whats not to like? I'm not getting any younger and my 461 isn't either. I'd go with a 500 unless some design flaw shows up. I look forward to you weaponizing one of these to the hilt, Jack.

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  3 роки тому +5

      Bob hi.
      At the risk of sounding crusty, I'm coming from a place of being realistic:
      The 500i gets Really poor fuel mileage once zipped.
      I can cut between 20 and 40 K on around 1 1/4 to 1.5 gallons of fuel with my torque monster 461.
      Don't bother putting a heavyweight 3' bar on a 500i and work on bad, brushy ground lest you tear out the mounts. Flops around like a salmon on the deck with a lw 32" too.. In my humble opinion, DONT EVEN think about knocking the undercuts out that are slightly attached.
      I can run a 50" on my 461. Nuff said there.
      A guy's chain had better be spot on, both teeth angles and stop elevation, with a 500i once zipped. The A.I. running the program is Uber sensitive to the ramp up time in a modded saw as well as the upper rpm threshold and over fuels trying to keep the rpms in check as far as I can tell.
      I can alter the fuel imput at any point in time that I need to in my 461.
      Primer bulb. Not going to warn you it's going out tomorrow. Like when your 2/3 thousand feet down and then 4/5 hundred up the other side of some fairly dark hole. Whomever designed the primer bulb into a big kid work saw has absolutely no clue here.
      I've had older style saws get "crud" in the carb in the bottom of a yarder block. Set her on a stump. Wide open throttle. Back the needles out until she almost dies. Reboot the needles and back to work.
      3 weeks later I'm now at the road. Now I can deal with a carb kit, or whatever, at my leisure.
      On the brite side, over 1/2 pound less than a 461, fully fueled. No arboists chucking out bigger trees should be with out one imho.
      Maybe some of it is what should be considered. And with this saw, it needs to be preemptively.
      I do appreciate you watching and commenting.

    • @bob_frazier
      @bob_frazier 3 роки тому

      @@hotsaws101 Yep, we see you pull the starter and nothing... till you punch that bulb in a few. So of course your right on. Yeah, fuel and bulbs not an issue for arborist, but exactly the issue for a faller deep in the hole. Damn good insight there Jack. Thanks.

    Very good info. Thanks for doing this video.
    I have been very happy running my 372 but when looking at the 500i it appears that the weights are almost identical and the 500 would get me more power.
    But the real question I have to ask myself... is that power worth the extra $800--$900.
    I'm thinking it probably is.

    Good day, I have a couple (maybe a few) questions for ya: 1- will the 572xp run leaner if I mix gas at 40/1 or 32/1 opposed to the reg 50/1? 2- does the 572xp benefit from removing the exhaust screen and or opening up the exhaust by two 3/8 holes? These answers may make for some good content I just can’t find anywhere. Thank you, keep up the vids, I’ll be watching for there answers/ explanation or find me on Instagram if you’re shy (lol)

      50:1 is less oil than 40:1 or 32:1 so it will run richer the less oil you mix. More oil in the gas will mean less gas is being burnt so leaner.

    • @em4703
      @em4703 2 роки тому +1

      Just run 32:1 with a good quality synthetic oil and forget about it. Don't play with oil ratios, 2 strokes already run low on lubricant to begin with.

    • @whiteman3075
      @whiteman3075 2 роки тому

      @@em4703 if they design it to run on 50:1 then that’s what the carb is jetted for. Fuel injection is a different story. A carbs jets are always the same if you ad more oil you are in turn running less fuel so now your running lean.

  • @ncode03
    @ncode03 2 роки тому +1

    500i's both bore and stroke is greater than the other two so it's not surprising it's faster. I think the manufacturer did not have it in the exact displacement because the difference, if any, would be negligible and it would be harder for them to get people to move to the new system. The electronic part of it will have you as a user have no choice but to go to the shop to get it fixed. I'm comfortable with carbs as it's an easier fix so I'll take a couple of seconds slower any day instead of going in and out of shops and spend more time and money everytime there is a problem.

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  3 роки тому +9

      Rick hi.
      Depends upon the application (wood density, brush load, ground contour, etc., etc.) and subsequent length of bar requirement. The 500i is going to cut better.
      On a personal note,, I won't take a stocker off the landing, period.
      I like the 60cc saws on steroids for a 28" bar.
      If I needed to run a 30" bar probably the 462. If I needed to spoon on a 32 or 33" (110 .375) then it would be a 500i. But in reality, I'd probably go to my 460 or 461 since I'm not interested in chasing my gas can. That would be the case using a zipped 500i. The 462s get pretty good mileage in zipped form.
      Caveats, always caveats in this life.
