Thank you for posting this video for the BMW community. It's great to see enthusiasts sharing information! We created a special 10% discount for your followers to assist them with their differential builds - use discount code "Nick_Pongallo" during checkout at BimmerDiffs. Not sure how long we can continue offering it, but wanted to say THANK YOU for helping share knowledge with the community.
Thayer Motorsports appreciate this very much as I'm sure others will thank you!
Great info! But couldn't hear over the music on certain parts😢
Hi. Nice video and nice car. You can not add shims on both sides. The sum of all shims must be the same. So if you add 0,1mm on left you must remove 0,1mm on the right. Otherwise you loose the preload on the bearings.
your right should have mentioned that the reason i did not do that is because i couldn't get different sims and i just needed this diff to work for some time and still good to this day. Brother has the car now but still good but again you are correct
Good video, but music way too loud and unnecessary
Thank you great info just needs to talk a bit louder so that you can hear you speak idk it could be the music going in the back ground.
.
perhaps you might have accidently swapped sides of the original shims during reassembly?
Hey man cool video. I have a question i hop you can help. I have an 04 BMW X3. I noticed it started making a grinding noise much like the sound of bad wheel bearings. I changed those but the noise hasn’t gone. I then changed the guibo and center support shaft bearing but still noise got worse and worse. It has gotten to the point where i cannot drive it anymore. The noise now sounds like someone is under my car banging it with a hammer. Can it be the rear diff?
were did you find the reparation kit? please put a link were i can find. TKS!!
I'm enjoying the video, but why talk so soft? Afraid the neighbors might hear?
5 26 2018 Hey Nick, Thanks, a lot for the post! I need to fix a 1985 318 BMW differential & the post is a good reference. Be well. v
So you should either go with music or talking because I came for the talking but couldn't hear a thing
donde comprastes el casquillo deformable
I like the video, would be good if if explain more in details
Hi nick...thanks for the video and it helps me a lot. I am using 3.15 diff for my e36. Where and how can I purchase a complete rebuilt kit?
You just screwed up the carrier bearing preload! Don't follow this procedure anyone. The shims that go between the two side flanges and the housing set the carrier bearing preload, which is critically important, as well as the backlash. The preload should be set first, and just like the pinion bearing preload it is checked by rotating the differential and measuring the resistance with an inch/lb torque wrench. Once the correct bearing preload is determined, you can increase gear backlash by increasing the thickness of the left shim, but you MUST decrease the thickness of the right shim by the same amount to maintain your preload!
Not sure about these, but on most diffs you don't measure preload with the differential installed. I understand what you are saying but usually differential preload specs are not given, only pinion. Once again unless something is different with bmw diffs. Also adding a shim to both sides doesn't necessarily mean it will hurt the assembly but it is definitely not good practice. Thing is if he used original gears and pinion depth the backlash shouldn't have changed anyways with shims back to their original positions, So something was wrong from the getgo.
@@Ashroyer86 Bearing tolerances are very close, but still not perfect, especially over a period of 30 years of manufacture. The shims will almost always need to be changed when changing bearings, and Todd is correct, carrier bearing pre-load is incredibly important and completely ignored in this "build". It's a cool video for someone to understand how this shit works, but that finished product was not anywhere near the quality it should have been. My guess is it didn't last long, between beating the snot out of the pinion bearings with an impact and no pre-load on the side bearings.
Yeah this guy is a total dumbass don’t rebuild your diff like this unless you want to keep changing out your diff every 5000 miles.
is it correct to have a little bit of play from side to side with the ring gear? When I shim to around 0.033" back lash I have 0.005" play from side to side with the ring gear. would it be better to reduce that play and go to a back lash of 0.025". Thanks
I wish i can bring my bimmer to you. My e90 rear diff is noisy as hell.
is there any video for front diff bearing replacement
Is it possible to swap the flange without removing the pinion or messing up the lash?
hi thanks for posting the video, so what issue were you solving with new crush bushing install? Not sure I caught that in the video. I have a differential that both clunks, when shifting from 1st to 2nd and whines at 60mph so trying to figure out what I need to address.
Israr Kabir did you find out whats causing it? I have excatly the same problem
Sigmar I'm 90% sure it's the diff, I bought a used one from a low milage car, but haven't had a chance to swap out up confirm. Also, see: www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=155818
Israr Kabir I am having the same issue now. Did you figure it out?
Thank you!
Backgroun musc to loud much better turn off
Age old question: limited slip or non-limited slip?
Non open diff
Hey, thanks for posting this video. I wonder why did you have to add new shims? Did the old ones wear off? I'm thinking of rebuilding my diff but I thought I only needed to replace seals and bearings.
most of the time you don't have to change sims and the original ones are in spec but this time they weren't so i had to add sims to get to wear i needed to be
Hey could you speak a little softer you almost broke my speakers......
What is specs for. A 03 BMW 745li e66
Nice video, but dont use music, it is disturbing
BMW e90 318i . the Same Work ?

Yo what electric impact was you using?

Fricken awesome. i need to rebuild my m3 diff, so il use this as a reference
cheers dude
my diff is just leaking fluid so I just want to do the seals. I don't want to rebuild the whole thing.
Will it be similar to a e60 xi model? My differential broke down last night.
David Reyes it will be different but you should be able to get the idea any questions just ask and check out bimmer diffs for parts use my code Nick_Pongallo for 10% off
Nick Pongallo thanks for the reply.
axle boots omg
1rewd1 lol yeah it needed new ones
I have a 07 X3 3.0si. Where would I get that ring that's crushed down from?
if you go to www.thayermotorsports.com/ you should be able to find all the parts and what you are looking for if not you can call them and tell them what you need. also use my promo code Nick_Pongallo and you'll get 10 percent off your order!
Too funny indeed what did you REBUILD exactly ????!!!!! Because all i saw was you slapping it back together didn't even change any bearings or the like.
good question lol at the time it was just some video to make not the greatest video.
Wtf is a inchpound? 🤣 why not use simple newtonmeters like normal people do? Especially on a german car....
It is like mouse talking.
handicraft crying OMG :(
You've done OK BUT ... your video would improve out of sight by dumping that awful music and turning your own voice up. Your voice is very hard to hear as it's soft and quiet, then add that awful music background and it's extremely difficult to hear what you're saying, so important spec info is lost.
Yikes!
You are talking to your chin
