    This is what I love about being friends with you; before I met you, I thought I knew EVERYTHING. After meeting you, I am the student once again. I truly think I have learned more from you in your videos and on our various adventures than maybe anyone else on earth...or at least in Utah. :) Thanks for always adding to my knowledge of the natural world. BTW this was one of my favorite videos of yours. More adventures to come!

    the way you have taught your children to hold and handle animals in such a respectful and careful way makes me so happy. I work in shelter care and when dealing with families wanting to adopt, it's apparent so many people dont teach their kids to interact with animals with empathy or to respect their bodies and space. love your channel!!

    • @Lilith-Rose
      @Lilith-Rose 3 роки тому +14

      Definitely, I get so nervous around some kids especially young ones when they interact with dogs and cats, it's clear that their parents haven't taught them anything about respecting animals (or even asking before running up and trying to touch a strangers dog) and even the nocest most tolerant animals have a breaking point, but you just know that the kind of parents who let their kids behave like that are just going to blame the owner and the animal if they so much as growl or nip and they'll also yell at you for "trying to parent their kids" if you intervene and tell the kid to stop when the animal has clearly had enough

      *hoping Clint will adopt me so I can also go on herping adventures* so true what you said though Jenny! It's so important to teach young kids how to properly handle and respect animals not only for the animal's safety (and life) but also theirs. His kiddos have the best teacher!

    Finally, after a multi-year misunderstanding, I was able to sit my husband down to see your actual true feelings on iguanas. He was fully convinced from your iguana video that some awful iguana did you wrong, hurt you, or perhaps killed your whole family. He was baffled why you were so scared of such a tiny iguana. Confusion paired with growing frustration as you handled dangerous animals like cobras with no fear.
    I didn't exactly expect this sort of resolution but I'm glad we worked it out.

Other than that we've got red deer, badgers, stoats, then we're into invertebrates, fish & birds a plenty. But nothing on the island that can kill you, unless you mess with a stag in must or are allergic to bee/wasp stings or false widow bites.

    Walking catfish are just insane! I used to live in the Tampa FL area and they'd get in the mechanic shop at work and it's really just surreal walking into a mechanic shop nowhere near any standing bodies of water and hearing the mechanics complain about fish getting in. They were, apparently, walking between giant puddles that happened every time it rained at work.

    • @Annie_Annie__
      @Annie_Annie__ 3 роки тому

      That fish wasn’t a walking catfish. At least, it didn’t look like one to me.
      It looked like a pleco (a Pterygoplichthys of some sort). They can live outside of water for as long as 30 hours and they’re one of the most common freshwater aquarium fish species. The problem is that they get really big. Too big for most people to keep as a pet. So, I can only figure that someone dumped it when it got too big. I can only hope that they didn’t know that it would die slowly over the course of almost a day and a half.

The trick is picking them up before they pose defensively or strike at you. If you get them before then, they tend to be pretty chill.

      Unfortunately I'm in England so itts essentially one kind of frog, one kind of toad, grass snakes, slow worms (small legless lizard), one or two small lizards, and adders our only venomous snake (about as dangerous as a bee sting). There are one other species of frog and one other toad but they are extremely rare, confined to small areas and heavily protected against harassment of any kind so no touching or moving things to see them better etc. The reptiles we have aren't nearly as common to see around as they are in other places of the world either, I'm relatively lucky in where I live that I have better chances than most of seeing them but even so it's definitely not an everyday event

      @@Lilith-Rose I, too, currently live in England. There are also the common and great crested newts which I adore; especially by having a pond in my garden I witness lots of incredible moments.
      I think a mass international herping event would be Great for a channel like this, despite your less enthused perspective of UK local wildlife: Slow worms are cool!!!

    • @Lilith-Rose
      @Lilith-Rose 3 роки тому +1

      @@acrylicqualia we have ponds on our allotments that I put in, and hides for hedgehogs etc, way better than slug pellets (if you do anything for native wildlife one of the biggest things is educating about how dangerous for native birds amphibians and mammals it is to use slug pellets), and although I love reptiles I actually currently only keep native amphibians, one rescue toad and three frogs raised from tiny froglets out of all the ones we relocated from a site designated for construction because one has a leg deformity and the others were in less than ideal health, plus they do better in small groups. I honestly don't know how I managed to leave newts off my list, such amazing little critters. In the future I'd like to be able to offer captive bred native species so people can keep them without impacting the environment but it needs to be minimum third generation because of the protective laws prohibiting sale or trade and I'm not willing to actively seek out individuals to start a breeding project as I strongly discourage collecting from the wild populations, so it's dependent on circumstances more than anything. The only reason I have my guys is that the toad (who I named beauford) had already been kept in captivity around other critters and wasn't suitable for release for a number of reasons (partly because you need to know where they were from originally since they migrate back to their home pools to breed). The frogs actually ended up as permanent/long term residents by chance as well, my sweet little physically disabled boy legolas wasn't going to last long if he got released since he can't hop, swim or climb very well with only 1.5 back legs, one of the others had a neurological defect of some kind that was causing movement issues and the third was almost skeletal and very lethargic, so most likely they wouldn't have survived either. I was already caring for my toad so I had the supplies and ability to take them in rather than just release them to become food and heck have I gotten attached to the little buggers while caring for them these last few months

      @@Lilith-Rose Firstly, legolas - what a brilliant name! I once found a great crested newt in whilst my house was having an extension so I took it in, later finding out their decreasing coservation status made it illegal for me to disturb, so I placed it by my pond. I see many common newts now but I haven't seen Isaac Newton since.

    It is so amazing what you guys are allowed to do herp-wise in the US. Here in the land up over (we're not downunder; south is up and north is down), we get fined if we even touch a native reptile. I remember the last time I picked up a wild lizard; it was on a Marine Biology excursion (I created a Marine Biology Program for students that were academically way ahead of the 'average' student that I ran "above and beyond" my timetabled classes) and we saw a stumpy tailed lizard (I think you guys call them a shingle-backed skink) which appeared pretty chill; so I picked it up and talked with the students about it (camouflage/blue tongue/etc) and as we were discussing the beauty and of nature as seen in this lizard as well as the need to conserve/protect; a volunteer from some tourist shop raced up and started to abuse, not only me but four impressionable 15-16 year old students that we shouldn't touch the wildlife and that it was protected and all sorts of rubbish I started to ignore when they fell into swearing....
    I put down the lizard and escorted the students away from this toxic person. So counterproductive when all the students were appreciating the need to respect wildlife even if it wasn't "cute" and fluffy.... Anyway; I miss being able to do what you are doing so freely and with respect..
    I'm also very envious in what herpes you have available in the US (although a bit over the top) - here, we have to spend hundreds of dollars to get a license for ONE YEAR just to keep a snake, or a lizard. Virtually nothing herp-wise can be obtained without a license (which is why so many catch from the wild; exactly what authorities are trying to stop)...

    That gopher snake brought back memories. I had one from my mid-teens to my mid 20's. Had been wild caught. I probably should have released him. Just like that one he was incredibly docile, curious, and easy to handle, not just for me, but for anyone who wanted to hold him. He was the first snake a lot of those I met during that time ever seen up close. There wasn't a great deal of information on keeping reptiles back then. His enclosure was at least sized appropriately. I figured mimicking the local terrain in miniature would be a reasonable environment for him and he did well. I don't know the legality currently, but I can think of worse first snakes to get as a pet.

      If it was a humid night, The Pleco might be moving between bodies of water on it's own accord... They can breathe air, and although I don't know if it's been recorded in Plecostomus or any other Loricariid, Walking Catfish (Claridiae) and eels will certainly migrate overland.
