I can't believe you didn't mention my favorite characteristic of the chuckwalla - their curiosity. Many years ago friends and I were camping in a canyon out past Indio. I saw a head pop up over a boulder along the canyon about 20 yards down. It ducked back down and I paid little attention till I saw it pop up again, this time only about 10 yards down the canyon. Again it disappeared after a few moments. A few minutes later the little monster is coming up behind us under the cars. It got within about 3 yards, watched us for about 5 minutes then vanished into a tailings pile of bowling ball size rocks. For a while San Francisco zoo had a tank with chuckwallas and other similar sized lizards near the Mandrill enclosure. The lizards were great to watch because they were always chasing each other around, and in particular the chuckwallas would watch the watchers, often approaching the glass to get a better look. I've kept many reptiles in my time and never seen any other herp show much tendency to seek interaction with a human when food was not involved.

I think providing a score for keeping them could discourage others from trying but also open the door to people with the time and patience to have a wonderful experience.

Thank you for making a Chuckwalla video as I requested! :D They're hard to obtain as there currently aren't many breeders in the U.S. I can't understand why they're nowhere near as popular as they were 15 years ago as they're not even threatened.

THEY'RE SO PRECIOUS AND ADORABLE OMFG. SUCH A SWEETHEART. If I had to own a reptile, it'd be one of these. It didn't take long to win me over.
Look at him on Clint's shoulder at 6:31. That's too darn wholesome. I'm making the same kissy noises while watching the same way I do looking at most of my favorite animals like opossums and cicadas. Thanks Clint, didn't know reptiles could be THIS precious.
It helps that these are native to the US, albeit in the southwest as opposed to the southeast. Still, if I ever do get a reptile that isn't a ball python, it'll be one of these guys.
Their requirements are ironically stuff we have here in the southeast, like heat and UV light. Really humidity is the only thing that'd be of concern, but that's not impossible to get rid of.

That does seem to be a very delightful salad-eating sandpaper potato you've got there. Your excitement (which seems even higher that your typical usual high excitement for every darn species) truly shows just how much you love Pompeii and how much you want to promote chuckwallas as a species.

I gotta have one of those tshirts! I actually met a Herptologist about 30 years ago. He lived in a high desert mountain town in southern texas. i had gone to his house to adopt a male bearded dragon. I started talking about all of his animals and he offered to show me! One of the last things he took me to see what outside. It was a big round structure, looked like a stock tank, but was made of concrete. Inside the big concrete enclosure he had it about half full of sand and dirt so perfect for the Chuckwallas and Uromastyx. They were the last ones I met and I was immediately enchanted with them! Beautiful sweet lizards! I'd love to have a chuckwalla actually!

That is an amazing lizard there, Clint. Desert lizards are great- I saw a video featuring Saara loricata and they were so cool- one of the most prehistoric looking faces I've seen on a lizard. I'm obsessed. Unfortunately the Iraqi lizard is pretty rare in the US but if you can find one I think we'd all love to see it. They seem like they would make good pets.

I live in the UK and kept a pair of chuckwallas for around 8 years. Like Clint, I found them to be the perfect reptile to keep. As stated in the video they do like greens, particularly dandelion and rocket, but their favourite food, by a considerable margin, is flowers, which I believe this is their main food source in the wild. Mine were particularly fond of nasturtium and dandelion flowers, and would eat twelve or more at a sitting.

Most dangerous animal ever. Can't believe Clint risked his life to show us this. I really hope those book authors are watching this video in absolute embarrassment, as they should be. Seriously, this is easily the most laid back reptile Clint has had on that table. Never once showed signs of fear or hyperactivity.

As someone whose owned a tortoise, this might be my step into lizards. A friend of mine had a terrible cricket infestation when his feeders got out so I've avoided carnivorous reptiles for a long time.
I'm also a huge rodent fan so I hope one day you'll cover guinea pigs. The bigger, less hyper, but still adorable cousins of rats.

they are a gorgeous orangish color unlike Chuckwallas elsewhere. Ive tried to catch them before but no luck as they are super quick and slip right into the nearest crack where they proceed to do their best impression of a balloon while staring at you right in the face and wedging themselves in soo tightly that you couldnt get them out even with a crowbar

Oh, what a cool lizard! I’m in Southern Utah, but have never seen one of these, and now I want one! My beardie is 12 y.o., but I’ll have to wait until h dies to consider a Chuckwalla. We have a Chuckwalla Trail, down closer to town, so I’ve wondered what these lizards look like. Now I know. Thanks for the review!
