I broke up with a guy who was EXACTLY like the guy she writes about, he even actually said to me that he hoped I wasn't threatened! And after I dumped him I found the man I married. Thanks Dar for giving me the courage to leave someone who was keeping me from being who I am!
I grew up on West 97 Street near the Hudson River right near where Dar Williams will be appearing. I was brouht up in the Pete Seeger, Eric Anderson, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen era of folk. Dar Williams I always listened to on alternative stations but yesterday I saw her personally on a video.I see Dar as having a distinctive slightly throaty voice which is charming. As a folk singer, I have not seen better in a long time. That's what we need in the industry today, better.
Great track! I remember listening to it in the mid-90s when driving far too fast. In my naivety I also appear to have misheard that it was "I will not be afraid of winning", which I've just learned!! Oh dear. Anyway, I do recall a music video TV channel also playing a "video" of the song - not this lovely one, but another....set in a city? Black and white? Perhaps it was only released in the UK, but I seem to think it was shown on the CMC (Country Music Channel) albeit the UK version. If anyone knows if that's still around somewhere online I'd be much obliged. Many thanks and best wishes.
Yep. I introduced my kid to When I Was a Boy because of Sarah Dessen and I'm not saying that's WHY they're agender now, but the song probably helped them decide to come out.
Somewhat ironically, Dar Williams is so beautiful and sensitive and perfect and wonderful, that I'm absolutely terrified of her. As cool as I am, natch.
I'm disappointed that the actual music video for this song has been taken down. I enjoyed the imagery in that version, and I'm depressed I can no longer watch it.
Love this new video to accompany such an amazing song Dar!! So very well done. Love that we can see the chords/fingering for "As Cool As I am"! Stay safe, and may your 2021st American Thanksgiving next weekend be a joyous one for you and yours. (from north of the border)
Yep, it’s the woman realizing that she doesn’t want to be in a relationship with the kind of man who would deliberately disrespect her by trying to make her feel insecure by comparison.
Wait.... Is one of my song Ideas for the DWR bleeding into this? Ahh no... Not quite. I guess the ME TOO movement has multiple sides to it, and this can be considered just one of those many sides, but a quite important one to get to where we want to go.
Here in 2024 for the endorphin rush this song has given me every single time I've heard it for more than 20 years.

If I had to pick a favorite song, I'd choose this one.
It amazes me how little I realized that I didn't know myself until I met Dar's music.

Rediscovering a piece of my past I somehow haven't revisited enough. Thank you Mark & Sarah Talk About Songs!
I saw you in Gold Beach in the early 2000's (I'm guessing) at a coffee shop with a girlfriend. Still loving your music, thanks!
Brenda 🥰
God, she's amazing.

Is there a chance this video will reappear. She embodies liberation to the security of a free and friendly world. I miss it too.

Me too. I miss the joyous dance in the hallway, and the stepping out on the street. It's completely gone from the Internet now.

Dar I love you. Since I was a kid.
What happened to the original music video, it was even deleted from my private you tube video :(
She so good....
I like this version.
Better late to the game than never to it at all...Dar and Gary!!! Acoustic!!! Thank You
Love your version of Comfortably Numb. You have a beautiful voice. Hope you tour Australia some time.
A caminho do verão ❤️❤️
I 💘 you Dar 👀#SOUTHAFRICA 👀#capetown
Dear Dar, not able to find Mortal City song....of course one of your best....and yet I can't find it???
The nostalgia makes my eyes wet
I love Dar and this song, but damn, it would have been great to have Gary singing some background vocals on this song!
I think it's about not being threatened by other women when she is in a relationship, and her partner keeps comparing them to her.
Thank you for explaining this song to me, now it makes sense throughout
@@johncamden5379 the fact that you didn’t get it speaks well for you-you’re obviously not the kind of guy who pulls that sh*t!

The unofficial anthem of Bryn Mawr, the progressive women's college.
I graduated from Bryn Mawr before Dar was a Thing, but I’m very happy to hear that she has iconic status there.
