I work at a Mini Dealership. This is NOT a John Cooper Works. It doesn't exist in a 4 Doors. This is a Cooper S with a JCW Kit. Also, this is a ''Carbon'' Special Edition which explains the Price. So when it says "JCW tuning kit #" stamped on the engine cover, that doesn't mean it has extra power? I'm confused.
It has the Cooper S engine with a Tuning Kit and a John Cooper Works Exhaust System. Which brings it up to 208hp, not 228hp. You're right it is a bit confusing. For 2500$, you can have a Cooper S ''dressed'' like a JCW. The Carbon edition hasn't came out yet, which is probably why they wanted you to show it.. You should put your hand on a proper 2 Doors JCW and make a review.
+TheSmokingTire The 208 hp is the extra power with the tuning kit. The standard Mini Cooper s has 189 hp and the full on JCW has 228.

Hey Matt! If this had the JCW tune, then the exhaust was definitely running in normal mode. In track mode, it has all the crackles and pops you'd ever need. There would've been a little round metal Bluetooth remote in the glove box or in one of the cup holders.

That's the thing, the Carbon Package isn't actually a proper JCW, it's in between an S and proper JCW power wise you can get the tune and the remote control muffler bypass on a 2 Door hardtop for about 1,700 bucks in parts which is where a good portion of the carbon package cost. Transmission wise this probably had the sport automatic since it had the shift paddles as opposed to the standard 6 speed which is found in a Cooper Clubman
38K? Too close in price to a Golf R which I would take hands down over this car.

In Europe Golf R is about 50-60k Euros, I think that price-wise it is closer to the GTI
Golf R is 37k for completely base model with manual in the states. Well specifically California.
If the price in the States is so close, than the R is a no-brainer.
I think this would definitely trouble a Golf R around the bends and the interior is pretty posh

That's not a proper JCW mini Mat, it's a Cooper S with JCW catalogue toys. It appears that its not had a JCW tune either as you'd hear the pop's and bangs too... Bit of a shame as a proper JCW with the big brakes etc would be less money and be a lot more fun on those hills.... Had mine 6 months after an M135 and RS3, it's a lot more fun on the twisty's... :) Great video as always, makes me want to go out and spank my motor....

Have to agree with those who have commented already though. It's not a true JCW. I have a 15' model and even without the optional Challenge exhaust it still pops and bangs on lift off. Sounds way better than my pal's Golf R. Even he thinks so.
I had it professionally remapped by Falkland Performance Centre here in Scotland and it's now sitting at just over 270bhp on the road (301 at the crank) Torque steer is now an issue but the car feels so much quicker and alive for it. Wouldn't swap it for any other hatch on the market.
I like the drive-by scene every time you stop, it makes the video seem more (professional?) if that is the word. Honestly was thinking about test driving one of these and then test driving a Focus ST but that price just killed it for me.

All the new minis are so disappointing. The old ones were so good. They need to take a long look at what made the old JCW minis so damn good. Tiny go kart feel, phenomenal handling, wondrous sounds from that angry little engine. The new ones have been given that BMW refinement; larger and more comfortable interior, smooth and predictable engine, smoother ride at the cost of handling. Minis should be raw, JCW minis should be raw x10.
yep, would take a properly sorted 06 S with lots, and lots of money left over for mods. Would be faster than this car, handle better, and give you even more smiles. I miss my R53 now....

SnipinCatz I really dont understand why, especially as the S/JCW is such a disappointment compared to previous gens. But yes, they are more mainstream and selling more to chicks and well-heeled hipsters I guess...a Corolla sells well, doesn't mean it is good.

Austin Patton had an 06 with WMW goodies including a 17% pulley and Invidia titanium exhaust. Loved that little thing, surprised a few Mustangs for sure. Light and nimble. Cant argue with sales, even if it means selling your soul, as MINI has done.

Matt, if you were getting a Cooper 2 door, would you get a cooper S with JCW tune or would you spring for the proper JCW? The S/JCW tune comes with roughly the same things as the JCW itself but the tune is 2k at the dealer and at that price doesn't it make more sense to just get the JCW? I'd say both options are going to run you roughly 32-33k (without some of the more ridiculous options)

i agree with you about cruising on the highway in the Mini's. Borrowed my friends 07' for a week and constantly caught myself cruising at 85mph.
pay for sun roof option, pay for additional option to cover half of it.
Great Drive Matt as always. You're bang on with the brakes the F56 brakes are really poor without much feel. The JCW 4 pot brembos would do a much better job. Regarding tyres I had the option in the UK of deleting my run flats which I've certainly not regretted .
Exhaust wise strange that you didn't hear it crackle and bang if you had the JCW one. Did the mini not come with a remote to open the valves? From the videos I've seen it sounds like a firework factory going off.
Have to say on build these cars are vast improvement over previous generation minis and pretty cheap to run.

That car is a cooper s with the 210 tuning kit. Also did mini not supply the Bluetooth remote for the exhaust? It's switchable from silenced, then double click opens the valve.

was this a true jcw or an S with the tuning kit. either way in sport mode that exhaust should've been popping and crackling all day long
+TheSmokingTire This isn't a JCW factory car, this is a Cooper S with the JCW tune and exhaust dealer installed. This model only has 210HP and does not have Brembo brakes, or the quicker shifting auto trans. And like D V said below, this package you are driving comes with a remote that bypasses the muffler and makes it very loud with a lot of exhaust noise. I'm a Mini dealer tech and I have this same car but in manual. The JCW package from the factory is different from the car you are driving. Thats also why the tires suck.

those pops and bangs disappearing is due to a tune upgrade took mine to a dealer few years back and they update my car and i was so sad while i was driving it home

I have the cooper s 5 door with the jcw tuning kit, and a nm engineering power module, and iv beat a focus st, Fiesta St, like every gti mk, Cadillac ats 2.0 turbo,bmw 330i, 328i, m3 e36, m3 e46, infinite g37 in spirited sprints in the Los Angeles area. The aftermarket for this car really opens up its potential and really makes it worth the money. I paid less then a Fiesta St for my mini and used all the money I saved on the aftermarket. Once the stock tires go it's Michelin Super Sport, and bilstein pss14 for my mini.
Matt I don't understand why you were not getting pops and crackles with the JCW tuning kit, I get pops and crackles on my 4D S without the JCW kit, but mine's a manual. And I do agree the Hankook tires are not good. I'm constantly getting wheel spin, loosing traction every time I go for a spirited run.
Why didn't you open the exhaust flaps. If it has the jcw tuning kit then there is a remote control to open the flaps and then it sounds like a F type. With a the bangs cracks you want

The stripes over the sunroof just kills it for me... why even bother if it almost blocks it completely?
Why always turn traction control off? On my ATS, w/ it on it the grip isn't that great as it is.
Most cars have very conservative TC and shut down power when you get wheelspin, which I do not want.
I can't tell if it's the camera FOV messing with the image, but for a 5 door hatch it looks like there's next to no legroom in the back
Matt and Thad are both over 6' tall so I'm guessing they had the seats all the way back

I have the same mini. Mini cooper S 5door with JCW tuning kit (exhaust+chip) it has 210hp and the exhaust in the video is much more quiet than mine. Maybe you havent opened the exhaust valve with a remote? Nice video tho!

... It isn't stupid. IF you don't like the stripes, so why would you order them? If a proper mini designer liked it why it is stupid? and speaking about the remote it is more or less aftermarket exhaust and there is no normal exhaust button, not even a space for it. Even BMW M2 with M performance exhaust has the same remote control.

The 4 Door carbon edition is how you get the JCW tuning kit, takes power to 211 hp and 220 tq, also, there is a valvetronic exhaust, open the valve and you get that tasty overrun.
I put it in max performance modes and couldn't get it louder.
+TheSmokingTire There should have been a controller for the exhaust, it has a button for the "track" mode, it actually has a great sound, if you can find it, it's fantastic
I read that the F series cooper S minis only start popping and banging after a certain mileage has been reached.
I think maybe this car might be too new for that.
I've watched many other cooper S reviews and they sound more aggressive and have more pops and farts than in this video.
All these people saying not worth the price because other cars in the range clearly have not driven a mini.. i own an 09 clubman without a turbo (it was too expensive) and i have a blast with it. I could only imagine the jcw being heaps better i would of course opt for the 2 door though

For 90% of normal road cars, I use the Zoom H4N mounted to the windshield with a dead cat over the top-mount internal mic and it's great. For the loudest cars or full on race cars, I'm using one of the new Sennheiser digital lavaliers, which is just amazing, into the H4N.

Matt, it looks like they sent you a Carbon edition Cooper S with the "JCW Tune" package. Think of it as a 335i "M-Sport" vs a true M3. It seems as though Mini have adopted BMW's sticker and tune approach. There is no 4 door "full JCW" Mini on the market today except the Countryman.
I don't understand these manufacturers, they give you nice looking Brembo calipers and then cheap out on the pads?

Dampers are shock absorbers, same thing. The numbers you're referencing are the tire width in millimeters

If you want a kinda nice, German-ish FWD automatic with about 220hp - why not get a cheaper Golf GTI? Or a better performer with the Golf R for roughly the same amount of money?

Another great post by Matt. You have over half a million subscribers for a reason - this review was honest and pretty objective considering you had the car sent to you from mini. I've been a fan and continue to follow you for that perspective. With this car, I just don't get why anyone would buy it. A gti is cheaper and faster + better looking. Same for the focus st. He'll even an acura tsx could bring it against this. If you want to spend $35k+ you can get a Golf R or STI. Is it just to be that "cool creative guy" a la saab buyers of olden day?

It’s interesting that the exhaust in this configuration doesn’t pop when revving or letting go of the gas. I own a 2 door Cooper S with a manual transmission. It has stock exhaust and no tune. The exhaust and engine sound so differently. I can rev it in sport mode and it will pop. It will also pop when I let go off the gas or when I downshift. The way the exhaust of the car in this video is disappointing and it doesn’t represent what the manual version sounds. This has a JCW exhaust and it should perform better.
Edit: I have a F56 with the B46 engine and a 6-speed manual.

I would buy this over a Golf R, with the propper JCW exhaust it sounds very good, even better then the Focus RS. But indeed the Focus RS is king of the hot hatches this moment.

focus rs is impossible to buy. golf r is around but not with dsg and stability control. so only slow golf r is available.
meanwhile tts is easy to get and with focus rs markup there isnt a huge price difference.

Unfortunately this isn't a true JCW car. I'm not 100% that this is even a 2017 as the MINI Cooper S Carbon Edition in the video was only a limited run car in 2015 or 2016, with each dealer only getting one car. The Carbon Edition is a 4-door Cooper S with the JCW Tuning Kit, Aero Kit, and every carbon accessory in the catalog, along with the unique stripes on the hood and the doors. The Tuning Kit should have come with a remote for you to open the exhaust to race mode as it comes with a valvetronic exhaust. The brakes are stock Cooper S spec, which probably explains the brake fade at the end of the video. The 2-door JCW comes with 4-piston Brembos and a non-valvetronic exhaust.

It's a JCW works kit. There is no JCW 4DR . The engine is smaller and slower than an actual genuine JCW but this is for sure 100% a JCW kit. Still nice mini...

I don't really see the point of this over the GTI? If you want a "hot hatch" with an automatic, the GTI with the DSG seems like a much better buy than this. Maybe not quite as much space, but seems like it's a better car.
