Honestly, Zack's got it. Talking and driving isn't as easy as it looks, especially when its spirited driving and it takes a lot of practice. It came more natural for Matt since he's being doing it for years. It takes practice to get it down and the best way to do it is to get the repetitions in. Give Zack a few months and you'll notice a big difference.

Sounds like Zack is speaking from an airplane microphone, like the pilots do to address to the passengers.
Some of that is the sound bouncing off the windshield, a lot of it is having to boost audio levels in post. Matt's recorder has auto-leveling, but the one I used that day does not. I'll be changing the equipment in future shoots, but we will have 2 more videos with less-than-perfect audio. ZK

You've also got a calm and consistently low registered voice, which probably adds to the "pilot over the intercom" feel - that is not a complaint; I enjoy your one takes, keep them coming please.
Without a doubt, one of the funnest cars to drive. I drove one back in 2013 and I loved it...seriously contemplated buying one. It didnt feel like a front wheel drive car, great transmission and fast enough to keep a smile on your face.
Lmao “Minis rattle apart” is probably the most accurate statement I’ve ever heard. I’m on my second R56, and I love it dearly, but it definitely rattles apart the more miles you put on it lok

Stunning car man. I have a 2017 Cooper S these days with the 6-speed manual ...what a fucking blast it is. Sure I would have loved a JCW but I have yet to be disappointed with the S. And that manual transmission (I hear the JCW seems to have the same) is an ABSOLUTELY peach! Every gear snicks into place and when pushing, it does its job smoothly with no issues. I know the Double-Clutch is faster but for the closest approximation of what BMC would have created this car like in our times, it simply must be manual and no sunroof. Oh and the pops and bangs on this car (and on the standard S like mine) are awesome ...much louder in person than you would expect. These things simply cannot be compared to anything else in their class and not in terms of speed, but in terms of cornering and driving enjoyment.
Johny Piston I would take an Abarth over it because less weight... also an Miata but this is RWD.
Not a big fan of Minis- most of guys here drive like fucking idiots in their Coopers
Johny Piston you should look into burger tunings boost box. I had one in my 2014 and it was nuts. Increased boost by 5psi and totally transformed the car. You could roll 2nd gear at 2k rpm and it would just light the tires up. Best mod for the money in my opinion. I sure do miss that car, it was sooo much fun. I never understood the appeal until I drove one

I have a F56 Cooper S, same gen. 90k miles and has held up well without any repairs. Fluid maintenance and turbo/engine maintenance
Cheaper insurance than my Hondas and Acuras and better gas mileage
I had a 2014 Cooper S with a burger tuning boost box. It only increased the boost 5psi and it totally changed the car. It ran a solid 14.1 at the track with quite a bit of wheel spin. Great car to drive and a great place to be as far as interior goes.

A friend of mine in my MINI group has one of these. It feels very similar to a new VW GTI but faster. Almost nothing like my R56 though. Like the owner said, this is the most BMW the MINI has been yet.
UnlinealHand what do you mean or what do the owner mean? Before , they were not made by BMW, their engine were not from BMW, their parts, etc...?

The first generation new Mini (R53) was actually designed by Rover group before BMW took over, and its engine was an iron block 4 cylinder from GM.
The 2nd generation (R56) was the same chassis as the R53 but revised a little by BMW, and had an N14 engine from the Peugeot 207 GTI. (Later updated by BMW to the N18 engine)
This car, the third gen (F56) is completely BMW, and shares its chassis and engine with the BMW 1 series.
That's also why the chassis code is F56 like the rest of BMW's F generation models, the R in R56, R53 etc. stood for Rover.

new GTI's spank these. Especially if they are both chipped. And then you realize that the JCW mini is 10K more expensive.
I've driven both. My other friend has a Mk7 GTI with a mild Accessport tune. I'd say the stock JCW and the GTI with an Acessport are about the same in terms of straight line speed. However the JCW is better equipped int he handling department if you get the pro suspension.

The thing that gets me about the minis is that they still look pretty small compared to everything else for the most part. But compared to the original minis, the new ones are massive.

everything's getting bigger. partly because there is perceived value in a big car, but mostly because larger vehicles have more relaxed mpg requirements. loopholes are cool I guess
Berenger Christy Actually this isn't the main reason, it's rollover protection that is the cause. Did you notice how all smallish cars look quite similar (very oval), that's because of this. For example, the FIAT 500 didn't need to grow a lot larger because the original one was oval so rollover wasn't as much of an issue as with the MINI.
definitely! i saw an almost brand new Mini next to a newish Honda Accord sedan and thought the Mini looked tiny. About two weeks later i saw a 2013 Mini next to a 1973 Mini (new neighbor owned both) and thought the 2013 looked HUGE.
The front seats in my 2011 JCW are awful - flat and hard, with little side support. Worst feature of my car. I’m happy to see that Mini have finally put in proper sport seats.
Otherwise, it’s a total blast to drive around town, encouraging much bad behavior, despite a fairly serious amount of off-the-line turbo lag. Hmm, I wonder if they fixed that as well...

What’s all the talk about the car getting rattles after 80k, that was an issue on the older r series. The new f56 is apparently extremely well built and reliable
I like to say the Mini Cooper S models I have driven have a meaty feel to the steering, not a heavy feeling. I really like it. The only manual version I ever drove was so nice feeling.

For such a beautiful exhaust system like the JCW, this videos audio setup really failed
Throw a tune on this and you’ve got 300hp and on manuals over 310 without needing to do breather mods or inter coolers, they’re so sick, and when the power is upped it makes the jcw feel the way it’s supposed to. Sick cars man
Keep the clips short, dial in your own style and then extend them back out.

Audio had to be boosted a lot in post. Will be perfecting audio and changing gear (I was using a different recorder than Matt, as Matt was at the ZR1 launch).
The challenger has the most nostalgic look!

Still dialing in those sound levels... How much does the sound input have to be adjusted when going between cars? Mad props to the owner for taking the leap into manual transmission ownership and operation. Welcome to the club!
Few things going on here: 1. I shot 4 cars in 1 day, and Matt was Out of Town, so I was using a zoom recorder that didn't auto-level (like Matt's does). It's safer to set sensitivity too low than too high, but when you boost it in post, it sounds a little odd. 2. Sound changes a LOT between cars. In 1 day I had: A JCW Mini, a 2018 Mustang GT (quiet off throttle), a 1994 Toyota pickup (loud, no insulation), and a 2004 Mustang Cobra with backseats removed (loud). So not only does the exhaust volume change a lot in one day, the insulation in the car changes a lot (road noise), and the acoustics of the windshield.
I'll be using the auto-leveling recorder going forward, but there's still 2 cars from this shoot day left.

YASS it starts at 31 something BUT with a little extra options it goes up to 50
I like that you don't have to put much effort for the car to turn.
Man, this makes me miss my MINI. I had an R55 (Clubman) with full bolt ons. Not really conducive for family life.
Res and muffler delete can cure that loud engine sound waiting to come out.

In the uk 99% of people learn to drive in a manual car which then also allows you to drive automatics. If you learn and pass in an automatic you aren’t licensed to drive manuals.

I feel like the dude actually forgot to put it in sport mode. In mid you won’t have peak torque or “drama” as you call it…. You could hear there were no pops or burble, you need to try one again but with sport mode on, it makes lot of difference

I have an '06 JCW with 75k miles. It's so much fun, but it is falling apart. I have rattles in the cabin, a piece of my headlight flew off while driving, and my exhaust has suddenly gotten much, much louder. It's a wonderful piece of shit.
Nick O'Brien I know a lot of R53's over 100k that run just fine. My friend has one with 220k that runs well and he drives the shit out of it every day.
The important bits work. The interior rattles.
Don't get me wrong, I love my car. It's just caused me a lot of headaches.
Nick O'Brien The flex on the exhaust likely broke. It can be welded while on the car. Cost me $20 at an exhaust shop and took 20 min.

I’ve been in love since I watched the movie The Italian Job for the first time back in 2004 (I was 4 yrs old) Absolutely starstruck by minis for 15 years and after 8 months of owning one I’m just now starting to comprehend that It’s my car. I would absolutely have no problem buying another one to start a collection of minis. I want the new 18 or 19 Cooper S or Countryman S All4. But yeah, I dig that car it looks amazing

Steven D I paid 28k for the car, there's no RS for that cheap I checked before I bought the mini, plus the dealerships had Mark ups I didn't want to pay and the type R wasn't out yet.

CarsAndMuscle it’s preference man. I have an R53-S JCW and it’s a bad ass car but this JCW is on an entirely different level.
Patrick Munoz reason why I dont like them as much is, because of the fact that it has essentially same engine as bmw 320i, and is quite a lot bigger and in my opinion, without LED s, worse looking than r53, where 53 is just wide and low enough for a proper hot hatch dimensions
