I totally agree with you! Also interesting that it takes a woman to make a great car review these days. :) :) Not saying a man can't do it, but in these times we are living in now I've seen men behaving more like beauty objects where as their own clothing seemed more important than the car itself....... I never saw that when I was a kid more than 30 years ago, it was just on point and out with the facts, just being professional.

Every car has lane keeping assist. Some manufacturers just implement it better than others. My MG has annoying LKA but I've driven Volkswagens & Peugeots where it is less annoying. I certainly wouldn't want to turn it off. As for head up display I test drove a BYD Seal with it and I actually found it kind of annoying since it was a light source basically in my eyeline the whole time. If there is a HUD it needs a brightness setting.

Some people think they need a central binnacle or HUD because that's what they're used to. I've been driving my Tesla for 4 years now, it was only strange for the first 10 minutes - take a test drive before you decide it's not for you. Don't write off perfectly good (and sometimes great) cars because they have unfamiliar interiors. Not sure if I agree with the LFP vs NMC as MDF vs Oak comparison. The LFP has the way longer longevity, it can take way more charging cycles and has a reduced impact on the environment, while it's more suitable to be charged to 100% and has a flatter charge curve (although yes, the peak is lower.)
to me, the LFP is the superior battery technology, where i'm going to forgive it's reduced energy density compared to NMC which results in the slightly lower effiency of the car.

They're also safer, which is a huge plus. Damage or defects won't cause them to go into thermal runaway, avoiding intense self-fueling fires (which are rare with other chemistries, but dangerous when they occur). I think they're perfect for mass-market, non-performance EVs that are charged at home most of the time. Only avoid it if you're a frequent road-tripper or do all of your charging at DC fast chargers.

ive considered this and thought about it while driving for the last couple of months and you rarely have to use any controls except the volume for the radio and the wipers when you are moving.
The aircon i leave at 20.5 most of the time, the lights and wipers are on auto with the only adjustment being the "heavy / light" rain twist on the stalk. Lights are on auto, fullbeam is auto, mirrors are adjusted before I drive off (and once in the correct position i dont adjust them (i dont need to!)).
Re the speedo position, it is actually easier to look slightly sideways and refocus than it is to change focus up and down (there are good evolutionary reasons for that!)

Voivo was doing Swedish understated interiors, what some are now calling "minimalism," before Tesla existed. So while Tesla may have inspired the central tablet only display and glass roof, Volvo's interior is thanks to its own heritage more than Tesla. Thanks for giving your height in terms of back space. Not bad for your height but very tight for those a few inches taller. So much in the central display is a mistake. Use some of the space on the "shelf" for buttons. Overall, Volvo should have put more buttons in the car, a driver's display and made it two inches longer for rear legroom. The Volvo design in interior is a beauty especially when considering how much sustainability they've built into it and cut cost but still making something premium, if Swedish spartan, inside. I'd like to see it driven on British rough roads and the US rough roads because Volvos sometimes ride with less compliance than rivals but hopefully they've improved on this with this car and the EX90.

This probably won't mean anything to anyone, but I just wanted to say that, as someone who watches a lot of car reviews on a lot of channels, Alex is definitely one of the best of the women car journalists from my perspective. I know it sounds sexist to just say one of the best women car journalists rather than just car journalists, but the point I was trying to make was that for some reason I find car journalists like comedians. There are many male comedians I like and some that I don't, whereas there are some female comedians that I like and many that I don't. The same seems to be true of car journalists. Where comedians are concerned there are some female comedians who aim their comedy more towards women and the opposite is true of some male comedians, but I wouldn't think that applies so much with car journalism. Obviously from a producer's perspective, there may be the hope that women will respond better to a female journalist, but in terms of the information conveyed, there isn't likely to be that much difference. Maybe it's just a personality thing that makes me find one journalist more watchable than another, but in my day to day life I get on equally well with men and women, so I don't understand why there should be such a skew with car journalists. I suspect it's not just me though, because both my wife and daughter find Doug DeMuro really annoying, but I think he's fine. With no HUD, the center-screen-only approach is extra crappy. This car is so close to being my ideal vehicle, but the lack of physical buttons and screen or gauge in front of the driver really kills it for me.
I rented a Tesla Model 3 for a 2 week road trip, and drove it a little over 2k miles. The ergonomics kinda suck. It's the reason I drive a Mach-E now instead of a Model 3 (didn't hurt that, when I bought it, the Mach-E was actually about the same price). The interior of my Mach-E is just plain better.
I also recently had an XC40 Recharge as a rental in the Ultimate AWD trim. It was . . . pretty freaking fun to drive, with waaaay more power than I expected. The interior was great, if a bit cramped (since it's based on ICE, there are cutouts for things like the transmission tunnel, so I'd expect the EX30 to have better packaging as a ground-up EV). However, the software bugs I encountered in a brand new Volvo in just a week were . . . alarming. Example: the rear, driver-side door just stopped opening for a while. A quick look in the owners' forums showed that this has been a somewhat common issue in Volvos for 2 or 3 years. At one point, I couldn't change most of the vehicle settings for some unexplained reason too. Weird.
Otherwise, the car was extremely nice, and man was the chassis amazing for such an upright crossover.

The problem about this car is it was touted as the "cheapest Volvo" but when you look at the price the base model is €45,000 in Ireland for the crappy version that has very poor 200 mile range. So they expect people to drop another €5000 for "extended range", or buy the €55,000 model. This isn't cheap for a hatchback. It's not even cheap compared to larger vehicles like the Model Y. And even in the review it's clear they've cheaped out on physical controls not for design reasons but because it saves money. Who exactly is meant to be the target audience for this car? And if this car were built in Europe then maybe people could understand the price disparity even if they didn't like it but it isn't - it's built in Chinese factories just like Tesla, BYD, MG etc. So good luck Volvo shifting these because I think once the hype dissipates and people start thinking in terms of £££ this is not a good value car.

ICE cars I drove of this size are beter packaged and the boot is fairly small. It feels more like a 2+2 than a full four-seater. In an EV one should expect better packaging.
The efficiency readings on test also suggested a real range of around 200 mies which isn't that great. The instruments are awful but that didn't put me off as you can use voice control. Are the backrow seats foldable to create larger space? How flat do the seats fold to?

Agreed that the central screen is going to take some getting used to, but I'm fairly certain that since it's Google, it should have pretty decent voice commands to adjust the environment. Also, I think you can turn off the driver's camera. Because that's just creepy...

I deliver Volvos as my job. I am getting pretty sick of all these reviews failing to mention how excellent the google assistant is which controls by voice a lot of the options and makes the “small shortcut buttons at the bottom of the screen” pretty inconsequential. Tell google to change the temperature, play the music you want or navigate to a destination and many more without ever taking your hands off the wheel then see what you think.

Great review! Volvo's making a strong comeback with their EVs. Love my C40, and the EX30 is a better EV.

7:40 Those features are voice activated. You don't have to reach for buttons anymore, you use voice commands. Only issue I have with this review is you completely skipped that very important feature.

Lovely looking great idea, flipped with these shambolic touchpads cars are now using! If I can’t use my phone how is that allowed!!!?

The one thing that Chinese companies still can't quite get right is the user interface, this all in one touch screen being a good example. I believe that's due to more than language barriers, they have a culturally different approach to technology. They want to interact with it and feel they are getting really into things and are able to exert control and customisation. In the rest of the world however, we want it just work with minimum effort and learning curve for us. Of course we weren't always like this, it took the genius of Steve Jobs and Apple to make that breakthrough with the iPhone and the iPod in the 2000s. Before that our controls and interfaces were just as arcane. I remember in the 1990s I had a top of the line Range Rover - and if for any reason you disconnected the battery you had to individually recalibrate the anti-trap feature for each window! I mean cars have had electric windows since the 1950s and everyone else's version just works but good old anorak-y Rover thought we'd enjoy this.

Not gonna lie, a robot is exactly what I thought when I first saw the symbol in a different review.
