Great of you to point out the minus points about Volvo’s new flagship. The frailty of the center console is ludicrous in a car of this standard - of any standard, come to that, and the lack of physical buttons and switches is becoming a contemporary disease totally counterproductive. I’m relieved to be the satisfied owner of a 2019 XC60 which still provides a minimum of sanity. The vast sunroof without a shade is also unbelievable in this car (an XC60 has one). Love Volvo but hate this. Looks like a taxi and that’s a large price tab for cheap materials. We are also rapidly approaching the days where we have to type in a line of code to switch on the wipers. Bring back physical buttons please. Menus and sub menus are dangerous.
I could stretch myself and buy a brand new car, instead I bought a 20 year old Freelander 1 for under £2k, it runs perfectly, does what I need and economically friendly as saved it from being scrapped. In my mind that is more sustainable than spending £100k on an electric vehicle where battery won’t last much longer than 8 years. Also because I bought a cheap car I can afford nicer holidays etc… instead of being in ridiculous debt. This forced narrative to make everyone go electric is not going to work when prices are beyond that of the ordinary working person.
@@rod058 funnily enough you are spot on. @@peterharte88 the CO2 'breakeven' point for an EV vs the equivalent combustion-engined car is well known and dependent on the source of power generation in the country the vehicle is being used in. For example, in somewhere like Russia, with it's heavy dependence on coal-fired power generation, it would be around 77,000 miles. However, in a more 'environmentally forward-thinking' country like Norway, with its 98% clean hydro power generation, it's a mere 8,000 miles for parity. Fortunately, there's a rapid decline in coal-fired power stations - for example, in the UK, the last coal-fired power station, at Ratcliffe-on-Soar, is due to close in 3 weeks' time.

Great review as always. At least this one has a driver display unlike the EX30. Volvo pride themselves on safety but ignored it with both those cars as far as driver interaction is concerned. Don’t forget mirror controls also on the screen
Meanwhile, at Renault, they have a feel for the sort of car that people actually want or need. Efficiency, value for money, buttons and switches. Even their cheap EV, the 5 is rather desirable.
I don't get it with car manufacturers Is it when people crash their cars and die that they will bring back physical buttons in their cars? They are free to put sizeable screens (not too many big screens) but there should be a physical buttons Aren't they concerned about their customers safety?
100k for this in the uk. Save your money and buy a Amg estate for 30k E class or C class Amg. Those cars have personality and passion. This is a overweight fridge that is switched off. Volvo made the right decision to not go fully electric in 2030. They have worked how much money they will loose outside of the Chinese market which sells the highest percentage of electric cars in the world. On average you pay half or even less for a equivalent electric car than in Europe. The German car industry is worried about job losses and EU will impose tariffs on Chinese imports as the USA and Canada will do.
In the US, the base model is estimated to be less than 80k like the plug in xc90. Depreciation will probably bring it down to a firm 60 or 50k, which will make it an absolute steal for the tech and comfort
Okay, the SUV is out of my price range ... nor do I think ... based on research, that a full electric vehicle is the most environmentally responsible. However, I just loved the funny and objective review by Rory. Well done.
Rory? The Best Car reviews! I'll watch it even if the car means nothing to me! The EX90? I am sure it is an excellent vehicle but sadly another example of how the car industry lost the plot. It is irrelevant if electric appeals to me not: It is excruciatingly expensive (but in a world of leasing most people are probably just paying a deposit and a monthly payment that they can afford and after 3 years of chucking money away they press re-start ruin button and they go again) like almost everything nowadays besides a Dacia and another example of excessive weight and excessive stuff we just don't need but have to pay for it - I would to see an analysis of over 50k brand new car sales with a breakdown of what happens after 3 or 4 years... c'mon Rory bring this on!
I can foresee that when EV’s are the norm the British government will start to tax EV’s based on weight AND size replacing emissions and general vehicle size what is used for tax on combustion engine cars.
The cost is no bueno. Why charge so much when the dealer/manufacturer will end up discounting it. Just sell at the reduced price. This is what happens when they try and have their cake and eat it too. Too expensive and not with it when ICE isn’t going anywhere any time soon.
I should think all car companies should have a Human Machine Interface department that should run scenarios that require use of buttons. This trend of ultra minimalism is annoying. Even in computer companies like Apple and Microsoft who have tried to replace buttons with screens realized that sometimes you need those buttons and brought them back.
My favourite is when you pull up behind a derv van. It sets off and belches a load of crap outta the exhaust. How long to activate recirculate? 1 button press.......... Wait, what?
Why do all of these reviewers forget that it has AAOS. As does my Volvo. You can literally tell the car to do a lot of the things in the menu! Like adjust the air, turn on the heated seat, etc.
Your rant starting at 12:05 completely encompasses my feeling about operating a Tesla which all of the reviewers fawn over relentlessly. What’s different about this vehicle? The same people that rave about Teslas crash out about vehicles without volume knobs. Go figure…. The interior of this vehicle looks very premium at first glance but the exterior looks like the textbook definition of bland soup. I’m here for the seat massage, seat comfort, audio system and safety features but I’m not so sure about the rest. I’d also like to see it with an 800V architecture.
Hello Rory thank you so much for reviewing this car , l have been looking for someone to review it but l did not find anyone but you so thank you mate.
100 grand for less than 200 miles of range, and sensors that "should come at some point in the future". Is this what its come down to? Innovation is dead.
Such ashame. They make a wonderful looking car but ruin by putting nets in the seats. Makes the interior feel cheap. My 2011 s80 has lovely leather pockets adding the luxury feel of the car. Honestly how much more would airplane style pockets cost. Also that second row of seats should be electric aswell, hopefully they will added that into a face lift. Another fantastic video as always 👍 👏
I love electric cars and already have one as a local runabout, but I'm not going to be swapping our XC90 for an EX90. Far too expensive and I'm still skeptical about the software quality and aspects of the interior.
I have a soft spot for Volvo, going back to when my mom had a 240 D sedan - sorry to see some of those material quality issues. Will be interesting to see how this sells. Man, 4 Rory's, those blokes would cause some real trouble together! 😆
And with that *Lidar system* on the top of the car, I wonder how many times complete strangers are going to jump into the backseat of you Volvo when it's stopped at traffic lights or you're waiting by the side of the road and say, _"Can you take me to the railway station please? Taxi driver!"_
Still Volvo as it should be, now we just need Volvo to give us new electric estates ❤❤❤❤. Does it compete with Range Rover and Mercedes? Rory great video keep up with bringing us content like this ❤🤟🤟🤟🤟
If you want range, and normal buttons and a very luxurious spacious 7 seater that is also way more efficient (I easily get 500 km in summer with normal driving). Consider the Kia EV9. Switched to this from the XC40 P8 to the EV9 (because of 4 kids) and never looked back.
Great review! The future is definitely electric and this is a good but not excellent "second generation" try by Volvo with Tesla being the first. These cars will iterate to better design/price based on market feedback. Also, the feather in Volvo's cap is that it's owned by the Chinese so all the great Chinese EV technology (swappable batteries, etc) can get into the western markets "trojan horse" and avoid the uncompetitive tariffs being raised by the US, UK and EU.
I don’t get the lack of buttons/distraction gripe. In the 90s we used to drive with a CD case with half your CD collection and we used to successfully change CDs.
As someone living in Stockholm where in my area 1/3 of all people own an Volvo, I can say that the biggest reason people buy the car is not just because of speed, looks or interior, it is safety. Just compare Volvos newest ad vs Jaguars and you’ll see what I mean.
As a Volvo owner, the air conditioning buttons on the screen is very annoying and dangerous. Thank you for highlighting this issues. We need more buttons
I recently sold my 2017 a6 that was constantly braking ( bought it when almost new ) ang went for Cayenne 2008 and don't regret for a single moment. Got the v6 version, bit sluggish but less issues than v8 or turbo. I absolutely love this car and I had many brands over the years. I'll bet it's better build than this volvo and will last another 10 years while this not so smart car will be in a dump after 10-15 years.
Clearly this EX90 has received 90% of the Volvos design and development budget as against the “new” XC90 which (astonishingly), has hardly changed at all. After all this time the XC90 deserves more than just a minor face lift.
To be honest this Presence Detected is nonsense. Tesla has it and if a fly gets in to your car you car alarm will start going off out of nowhere. Its a total pain in the azz.
Volvo is underrated tbh..they need some Toyota people in their marketing dept. A fresh and very authentically designed car that xc90 is. I like it. Interior materials are so superior to what market leaders offer
Think that is in principle a good idea, but can imagine people assuming its locked and it not, then easier for thefts etc! Needs a different sound for denying lock, compared to lock sound?
Sorry but the XC90 is just better. I’d keep my 2016 XC90 over this even if they both cost $20K. The EX90 simply does not provide the usability and ease for travel. America is HUGE! Standard trips are over 450miles one way. We drive 8-12hrs one way all in one go. EX90 could never do that.
Great review! That car can hustle. Not a fan of the screen with all the features in it and having to dive through menus to find them. If they can implement voice control with AI tech to understand normal conversation, that would negate the worries of digging through the menu. I still prefer proper mirror and window controls, along with mechanical control to open the doors.
The fact it's £40k more than a petrol XC90 is surely insane though?
weren't they supposed to cost the same, I wonder?....
Volvo have lost their marbles, how many £100k suvs do they expect to sell in the UK. 10 a month if they're lucky?

Why are you copy-pasting this everywhere? Real world range is smack on the money if you don't drive it like a trigger happy maniac through canyons.
When they made cars like the P1800s, S60 / V70 R, V60 Polestar or S80 V8 it's safe to say this is no where near being the GOAT Volvo.
I know mate. This guy's is on some massive ev propaganda.
I concur @@redsquare5325
The fact RR pointed out the EX90's foibles, such as the bulbous side mirrors and Taxi-style LIDAR atop the roof, meant he contradicted his initial statement. A GOAT should be virtually (excuse the pun) faultless. Those are quite an illustrious list @Mark_A!
@@redsquare5325 really mate oh no mate guess what mate no one cares mate
I've a v90 cross country and I'd take it all day over this.
This is a Brilliant car. That's exactly what I said when I first got my XC90 T8 back in 2018. It was light years ahead of the pack then in 2018 and still feels very much so every time I take it for a ride. I wish I could get more range from the EV battery than the current 18 miles and I am content with it until I get my hands on a Li Auto when it finally comes to the UK.
Before anyone buys a Volvo in the uk I suggest you try and get insurance before you buy!
how come? I wouldn't have thought volvo were that bad. Curious now. Im not in the market but might still look at a quote lol
Dirt cheap for us. Then again we are driving one that’s twelve years old!
Spoiler: you get normal, competitive insurance. It's some weird myth in UK.
@@MartinzW 100% our XC90 T8 is cheap as hell. Volvo considered one of the lowest risk brands, with an amazing safety and reliability reputation.
I'd imagine that's your driving rather than the brand. I've got an EX90 T8 and the insurance is pretty reasonable.
4:24 With all those camera they could've done better in sensing if its really safe to close the automated boot.
Imagin, you are all alone and while parking at a lonely dark basment parking and it wont lock and the screen inside says presence detected. But no ones in there.
What on earth are they thinking at Volvo. Really upsetting to find the best and the worst in the same car ! 😎
@@carfan3762 I sell used cars, I have driven literally every car from used market between 1000 to 100 000€ price. I think the SPA XC60 is the best value for money if you're looking for an SUV. Just so good and easy to use premium feeling car!
"What are they think at Volvo". No not Volvo but Geely China for they own Volvo lock stock and barrel.
You can order a fixed folding screen if you live in a hot climate. An electrochromic glass roof would be nice, though. The XC series all have opening sunroofs, but you have to keep the drains clean!
Excellent review, packed full of facts and key things you need to know. This is indeed a fascinating new Volvo, and Rory presents it with such joy and honest opinion. We're waiting with anticipation for this to arrive!
It will take you approximately 15 years and 5 months to spend £40,000 on fuel if you spend £100 every 2 weeks to make the £40k difference over the ICE XC90.
Hahahhaa love the 4 Rories practicality review. Make it a regular thing
You guys do understand that you can give voice commands like turn on fog lamps right? I am sure physical buttons are good. But a good voice command support minimizes the need
Love Volvo but hate this. Looks like a taxi and that’s a large price tab for cheap materials.
We are also rapidly approaching the days where we have to type in a line of code to switch on the wipers. Bring back physical buttons please. Menus and sub menus are dangerous.
£100K and no option for a sliding opening sunroof - fail!
I did research a few years ago on carbon emission reporting in the car industry and you’d be surprised how far you’ve got to drive an electric car before it has paid off it’s carbon debt. Granted Tesla’s we’re still the best out of EV’s when it came to paying off the carbon debt back then. But it’s funny to think that buying an old diesel is technically better than buying a new EV
Edit: Funnily enough I remember reading an article some time ago about the older model Land Rover defenders being the least carbon costing car in England, because every part of the car was made in Britain. Can’t comment on the authenticity of that like but I bet it’s probably not as far fetched as you’d think
Its 100k not simply because its an electric car, but also because its a top spec luxury vehicle with every single luxury feature one can expect. Of course it's going to be expensive, no matter if its gas or electric. There are much cheaper electric options out there if that's what you're looking for. The EX30 being one of them
@@peterharte88 the CO2 'breakeven' point for an EV vs the equivalent combustion-engined car is well known and dependent on the source of power generation in the country the vehicle is being used in.
@@jonathantaylor1998 this was a point I briefly touched on in my research. So many minute variables to account for in carbon data collection. I went down the route of discussing how PV and home
Batteries could also further decrease the payback period. But I also had to factor in battery life too for my discussion. I didn’t have the word count to go all in on every point so I had to focus on one
this guy here is my favourite when presenting cars..best regards from romania
Ridiculous price, will be 50k in 2-3 years maybe even less.
Since it's EV, yeah probobly, but XC90 have held it's value better than many other in its size.
The price will go half in 3 years.
@@johan21678what country are you from? In my country looking at our auto trader the used prices for xc90 is like falling off a cliff
@@johan21678 looking on Autotrader right now, you can buy a brand new Volvo XC90 B5 MHEV for £52,669 after discounts.
The cheapest 3 year old, '21 plate B5 MHEV with 41,000 miles is selling at £31,995 - so a 61% retained value.
Compare that to the BMW iX 40 - brand new for £64,941 after discounts.
The cheapest 3 year old, '71 plate, albeit with only 19,400 miles on the clock, is selling at £39,965 - so a 62% retained value.
So, your assumption that the EX90 will lose more value because "since it's EV" is inaccurate.
Most beutiful car in Sweden 🇸🇪. Seen it already on the roads here and damm does it BRING eyes!!!!
You really did go overboard to show us the full seating capacity. Good and pls keep coming up with such ideas. ❤
I drive a 2009 C70 - a convertible and the BEST VOLVO EVER!! 👌🏾
I have 2009 S40… currently needed some investments but still looks good and I love it. Someday I will buy S60 III - I love the design. Your C70 is a great model! All the best!
@@MateuszCencyk I had an S40 before I got the C70, both great cars (the C70 has the same front end as the S40) - all the best to you mate 🙌🏾
Loved my personal S80 that I drove 3000 miles per month as a company car. Company thought reimbursement rate was too much so forced me into their fleet Ford Fusion which I hated. Miss my Volvo a lot. Wife has XC90 which we both love.
Great editing👌🏿. Your team had fun making this video 😅
@4:14 Are those 295/35 R22 tyres? @19:00 Nice that you were having fun in this!
This was truly a great review, the good the bad and the ugly ( the fails ). Thank you !
Finally decided to bless us with your presence
Lewis the GOAT.. I see what you did there 😏 #44
Volvo's advert for this car is pure class! An emotional journey!
I don't get it with car manufacturers
Is it when people crash their cars and die that they will bring back physical buttons in their cars?
They are free to put sizeable screens (not too many big screens) but there should be a physical buttons
Aren't they concerned about their customers safety?
Yeah, I'm a customer for a 3-year lease return...if other EV's are a guide, it will depreciate a lot.
2 Goats in this video!
This is Lewis. He’s a GOAT! I see what you did there Rori!!! Legendary stuff
For a brand that is known for safety, this is a massive backward step in putting everything in the screen....
The best model they ever built was the 240. It went downhill from there on.
Okay, the SUV is out of my price range ... nor do I think ... based on research, that a full electric vehicle is the most environmentally responsible. However, I just loved the funny and objective review by Rory. Well done.
Still don't want one, if it was a 250bhp D5 five cylinder hybrid with max ev range, with removable batteries it might make me think about volvo again.
Great work with four Rorys in the seats.
Great review Rory 👏 👏👌
That commercial brought me here.. I'm seriously considering a Volvo now.. .
Beautifully shot❤
Obviously, expensive, luxury cars were not meant for a social class like yours.
I can foresee that when EV’s are the norm the British government will start to tax EV’s based on weight AND size replacing emissions and general vehicle size what is used for tax on combustion engine cars.
Waiting to see what the facelift XC90 has to offer (Launching tomorrow)
Think the full EV's are still way more than the sum of their parts
@@BrianFraser not really liking that either.
The cost is no bueno. Why charge so much when the dealer/manufacturer will end up discounting it. Just sell at the reduced price. This is what happens when they try and have their cake and eat it too. Too expensive and not with it when ICE isn’t going anywhere any time soon.
Only Rory can make an overpriced, bug ridden, poorly designed car sound interesting!
Bug ridden?
This is the way
Some of us don't like to talk to inanimate objects though and buttons will always be quicker.
Thank you 🙏
Hello Rory thank you so much for reviewing this car , l have been looking for someone to review it but l did not find anyone but you so thank you mate.
Bland looking vehicle. Ridiculous price.
‘Presence detected’?!! How annoying would it be if you couldn’t lock your car because there was a stuffed toy inside?!
Last time I checked, stuffed toys do not move around by themselves but maybe I'm wrong.
I have a soft spot for Volvo, going back to when my mom had a 240 D sedan - sorry to see some of those material quality issues. Will be interesting to see how this sells.
Man, 4 Rory's, those blokes would cause some real trouble together! 😆
Volvo EX90 looking absolutely beautiful ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
And with that *Lidar system* on the top of the car, I wonder how many times complete strangers are going to jump into the backseat of you Volvo when it's stopped at traffic lights or you're waiting by the side of the road and say, _"Can you take me to the railway station please? Taxi driver!"_
Volvo avoided the yellows and oranges in the color palette. They knew.
Wht’s the point of doing a demonstration for a sensor that isn’t active yet?
Rory Reid is just peak entertainment! ❤
Still Volvo as it should be, now we just need Volvo to give us new electric estates ❤❤❤❤. Does it compete with Range Rover and Mercedes?
Rory great video keep up with bringing us content like this ❤🤟🤟🤟🤟
12:44 is there voice control combined with the HUD menu?
😅😅😅
"Best Volvo ever" and then shows problem after problem. ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND POUNDS. Mental.
Believe the intent with the selecting things in the menu is to use the voice control.
Use your voice
Rory, is this. the same shirt from the 911 video?😆 anyway, amazing work guys🔥🔥🔥🔥
"His name's Lewis, hes a goat"
Truer words haven't been said
I recently sold my 2017 a6 that was constantly braking ( bought it when almost new ) ang went for Cayenne 2008 and don't regret for a single moment.
"Lewis.... The Goat" = Instant like and subscribe
To be honest this Presence Detected is nonsense.
Tesla has it and if a fly gets in to your car you car alarm will start going off out of nowhere. Its a total pain in the azz.
Had 2 XC90 T8s. Would have got the EX90 if not for the fact that it looks the same at the old ones
The obsession with screens is down right gettin ridiculous...
5:30 this is unironically one of the best moments in internet motoring journalism
Would definitely love to own a Volvo one day. Maybe not the most reliable but their strengths are what i look for in a car
Wow, another standard interior 95% the same as any other EV, everything budgeted so empty, and 2 screens.
7:32 This screen is so outdated! It looks like smartphones 10 years ago.
Some serious research in this review, even down to the headlight wink 😉
