When I first tried Oath in Felghana years back, I got maybe 30 mins in before giving up because I thought the PC controls were difficult to get the hang of. When I picked it up again last week, the first thing I did was try the Mouse+WASD controls option. And oh boy - it was like playing a completely different game. I never expected a 3d action RPG to work so well with mouse controls. Other than the default magic attack key (which is middle mouse click, when middle mouse scroll changes magic ... yeah, you can imagine how easy it is to accidentally swap magic), everything else was really well done. I don't even know why the Mouse controls aren't just the default config.
From the perspective of someone who has never played any other Ys game, I'm loving the game so far. The art/environments are really charming, the VA is surprisingly good, the story is decent, and the music tracks are real bangers.

    • @CommRio

It is my favorite Ys game so I'm not surprised you're having a good time with it. I think the reason for the lack of default PC controls is because it is a port from the PSP, but I don't know for sure.

I just started on this game and find myself immediately enamored of it. I love how no-frills it is compared to other more recent Ys games - just an adventurer, his sword, and his collection of magic wristbands. No fancy party system or multiple story tracks or anything. Somehow feels both up to date and old-school at the same time.
Also, yes, wonderfully difficult. I actually had to restart in easy mode, as normal was too hard for me.

Oath in Felghana was most certainly the hardest, but I think it made very good improvements upon the Napishtim system of combat. The boss in the Valestein Dungeon was the only one that felt too hard in my opinion, although I can't even imagine ever getting the achievement for beating the final boss with no damage taken. I was also super surprised by the voice acting, but it made me wish that more of them had been voice acted after seeing its remarkable quality. Watching these videos is making me even more hyped for the eventual release of Monstrum Nox! Thanks for the video Rio!

I could play nothing but Oath in Felghana for the next year and I probably wouldn't get that achievement. I am looking forward to Monstrum Nox as well, it'll be nice to discover the game along with most of the Western players for once.

I just hope Ys Oath runs better than what I've played of Ys VI on PSP... I at least also grabbed the PS2 Version of Ys VI which will by my main Playthrough anyway (but I'm Australian so our PAL Version of Ys VI PS2 doesn't have all the Anime Cutscenes so that's why I picked up the PSP one as well, plus that one has an actual Gallery Mode 👍) I have the rest across PSP/PS4 as well, done with Seven and just started 2 in Chronicles (and about half way through Ys VI PSP and Memories Of Celceta PS4) so glad I finally decided to grab this Series after all the years of hearing about it from Happy Console Gamer etc. ☺️

If there is one thing I appreciate now that I rebought a PSP and most of my Digital Collection on Disc is just how good it all looks on its native hardware (They're fine on PSVita, sure, but there is definitely some Blurriness and it does district... Also I prefer how the PSP has those "Analog" or "Squishy" Buttons like the PS1/PS2/PS3 Controller as opposed to the really small and kinda just straight up shit Digital Buttons on the PSVita, the one thing I actually dislike about the PSVita to be fair 😒)

I've actually rage quit once because of how difficult one boss was, and pretty much every boss so far has taken me at least several tries before I beat them, sometimes a lot more than just several tries. The combat is still good so far and it's good to see some background on Dogi, so I'll keep playing.
I'm starting to wonder if there are two different voice tracks though, because the voice acting I'm hearing doesn't sound very good to me. Dogi and Elena are ok, but others sound varying levels of bad to me. It's definitely overall a downgrade from the English acting in Ys 8 and 9.

For the Vita Celceta, Dana, and Ys Origin are the ones natively ported or made for the console. Since you can also play certain PSP games on Vita that should cover 1+2, Oath in Felghana, Napishtim, and SEVEN. Basically, all the games except Monstrum Nox (PS4 exclusive for now) and 5 (never localized) are available to you on Vita or PSP, and definitely on PC if you've got one that can play them.
If you're looking for another game in the style of Celceta or Dana, Seven is your best bet. If you're willing to go back to the games that used previous systems I recommend Oath in Felghana and Origin as very good games.
