Your reviews of Ys are quite good.
I myself embarked on the Ys journey early last year after exhausting all the Trails games currently released and my experience has been quite good. They're amazing games for sure.
It's also good to see you've stuck to the story / canon route while playing them. I did the same with my playthrough and while the jumps in presentation, graphics, gameplay, engine, etc can be quite sudden and out there, I personally really enjoyed seeing all the lore and story connections and references from previous games unfurl.
Ys 1 & 2, while pretty old, are great. They quick and to the point, but very dense when it comes to content. Some feel like they haven't aged that well, and in some aspects they're not really wrong, but I still had a great time playing them.
Personally, it's just enjoyable going through Adol's first adventure and learning about many of the aspects that would become central to the series plot, lore and continuity later on.
Ys Origins is also great, and it's probably my favorite of the games with the Napish engine. The combat is extremely fluid and everything works great. I also feel like the difficulty is really fair compared to the grindfest that was Ys 3 and Ys 6 (I also like those games, but they're really enervating at times with their difficulty curve).
The game also clarifies many things from Ys 1 & 2, straightens the lore a bit and introduces a good number of interesting characters. All the playable characters are interesting and build on each other, revealing more about the game.
My only real criticism is that the Tower itself started to get a bit boring during my 3rd playthrough with the last character, but that was probably exacerbated by going through every route in such a short time.
I didn't mention it, but, of course, the music is fantastic. Among the trio of Ys 1, 2 and Origins, I'm personally a bigger fan of Ys 1, but the others are also fantastic.
And now, finally, Ys 4: Memories of Celceta. The 'black sheep' of the franchise.
Personally, I really like Celceta. I can understand all the complaint people have with it and I even think they do, overall, retract from the experience, but there's something about the game that draws me in, despite it's flaws. It really embodies the feeling of "adventure" Adol loves down to it's core, for better or for worse.
The memories that involved child Adol were also really cute. We don't get much on Adol's history, so it was nice, if nothing else.
That is, like you mentioned, the exploration. I just love the feeling of exploration in this game. Celceta is great setting and no other game in the series (even in other Ys games with lots of focus on exploration like Ys 6 and Ys 8) has come close to Celceta on that particular point.
This is the 2nd game to the use the party engine for the gameplay, so despite a few flaws, it's pretty polished. I also enjoyed all the playable characters, even if some of them felt a bit detached from the main story unless you did all the content the game had to offer.
The main problem is honestly the ending. To be fair, the main villain's motivation and what happens in the ending makes a lot more sense once you have the context given by later games in the series, but I really wish the ending wasn't a literal text scrawl.
Overall, though, I really enjoy the game. I personally don't think it's the worst of the canon games and it has it's own fair share of lore and character bits that are extremely interesting.
I also feel like the music is a bit underrated. It's not the best in the franchise, but it's definitely not the worst in my opinion.
Next should be Ys 3. Oh boy... A lot of people love that game, but I have to admit it I don't have the best opinion of it. I'll comment more on that next time, though.
It's a pity this video hasn't gotten more view, though.
Also, sorry for the English. It's not my first language, so I hope everything is understandable.

Glad to hear your thorough thoughts on many of the Ys games. I'm really glad the Ys series has a diversity of game styles that help distinguish them from each other. It allows for people to have a lot of personal favorites.
I actually finished Ys 3 recently video in the works so keep a look out for that.
Lastly your English is completely understandable, thanks for your comment!

Thanks for the great video! Considering I've played through Ys Origins, Ys 1 & 2, and Ys 8, I'm very excited to finally get to another of the "modern" entries. I really enjoyed the party battle system from Ys 8, so this entry has me particularly excited. It just feels so satisfying to try out all their different styles of combat. Well, I'm gonna start Memories of Celceta right after I finish this comment, so have a great day CommRio!

This was well timed given I'd just finished Origin the other day (and 1 and 2 before that). Another great video! Looking forward to giving this a try when I pick it up, although I'd warmed to the Napishtim battle system quite a lot over the course of Origin so it'll be a shame to leave it behind, albeit only temporarily until Oath and Napishtim come around.

I just finished Memories of Celceta, which is now the 3rd Ys game I finished. I prefer Ys 8 and 9 overall, but this one was fun too. I just wish its ending didn't leave a sour taste in my mouth!
Now to move on to my fourth Ys game. . .

I just finished this one Last night and i completly agree with You. I started playing this amazing saga back in november with Ys origin, then I and II and Celceta is My least favorite so far. Not a Bad Game by any means, it's quite good actually but the plot never trully engaged me. Now i'm starting oath of Felgana.
Great reviews by the way, subscribing right now. Greetings from Chile!

I'd bet money that the game was originally developed for the PSP and then upscaled for the Vita.

Edit: i have played all the ys games I can not wait for Ys IX

Being a much bigger fan of the Origins/Felghana/Napishtim style of games, Celceta was, in my opinion, one of the weakest entries so far.
While i do agree that the focus on exploration was used pretty nicely, the overall setting, story and even music never quite hooked me in.
Plus, playing it on Vita back then, a system that i absolutely loath, didn't help matters.
Let's see if the PC version and a 2nd run can change my mind ^^
    Great video as always!

Hopefully the second run does go better, it did take me a little while to get into the combat, but I think it's still good.

I've been going through all the Ys entries I missed for the past couple weeks, and finally got into Celceta yesterday.
I'm surprised by how much I'm enjoying it so far. The world exploration might be the best in the series up to this point, and the combat system is a significant improvement over Ys Seven. (It's impressive how much difference a couple of tweaks- like no longer needing to hold the attack button all the time while charging it - can make) I'd still place it lower than Origin and Felghana, though. I really liked the simplicity of previous titles.
One thing that really bothers me but I don't see mentioned often is how the game handles healing items. At least on nightmare, I find bosses a bit too hard without them, but using healing items can completely trivialize the fights. You can carry virtually unlimited potions, and unlike other games like Monster Hunter or Hollow Knight (in which you need to find a good opportunity to heal or you will put yourself at risk), healing in Celceta is immediate and risk-free... There isn't even an item cooldown or something! I wish they could've found a better balance.
Can't say much about the story. So far it's fine, if not very memorable. Same for the soundtrack, unusually. Let's wait and see.

So far, I think I'd rank the Ys titles I played more or less like this:
      1) Origin
      2) Oath in Felghana
      3) Ys 4: Dawn of Ys
      *
      4) Memories of Celceta (Temp / 7 hours in)
      5) Seven
      6) Ark of Napishtim
      7) Ys 1
      8) Ys 5: Lost Kefin
      9) Ys 2
      * (Maybe? I have trouble trying to rank Dawn of Ys. Definitely, the best game with the bump combat system. Easily the best level design of the 3, good boss fights, some very memorable moments, and actually good puzzles build around the player's movement. Also, unlike Ys 6 and 7, it has nearly no padding/grinding. And you can turn into a little Kangaroo and have a friendly chat with any enemies. But the overall plot and characters might be among the weakest in the series, and the regular combat encounters are not very interesting - especially after getting the 1-hit-kill boots. I have trouble deciding if I actually like it more than Ys 6 and 7 or not.)
      Not played:
      Ys 3: Wanderers of Ys
Ys 4: Mask of the Sun
      Ys 8: Lacrimosa of Dana
      Ys 9: Monstrum Nox
      Ys Strategy

Is there a discord server for this game specifically?
I need some tips and help with some stuff, but the Ys discord I'm in right now is more focused on story than gameplay so...

As far as I am aware there is not a specific Memories of Celceta Discord. If you're part of the DigitalEmelas Ys server it might still be worth asking the gameplay related question in the specific Celceta chat.

In my opinion, you should play Mask of the Sun (SNES) and Dawn of Ys (PCE-CD). Mainly because what you said about the differences between Celceta and the other Ys IV, but also due to how different are among themselves. You might want to skip Mask, because it may be the worst game in the series, but Dawn is, maybe, the best bump combat game out there.
Mind you, Ys I & II remakes are mostly the same as the OG games, but with a bit of extra content (and better control), and Felgana has mostly the same story that Wanderers (OG Ys III), but with better combat and level design, so you aren't missing that much by skipping those.
Lastly, you should play Ys V. The game is not that good, but the story (the part that was actually implemented) is pretty good, and the gameplay is proto-Naphisthim (with an overly convoluted spell creation system, for whatever reason).

I don't think I'm going back to either Ys 4 or Ys 5 until I've at least completed Ys 8 (or 9 depending on timing). I also would love if a Ys 5 remake was on the way, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

@@CommRio unless they announce a English release date of a remake of V in the near future, I suggest you to play Lost Kefin between Felgana and Dana. That's it's Chronological placement, so…
If the legality of emulating it is a concern for you, I should remind you that these older games are Abandonware. Which means Falcom is not selling them. The games since released since the Ys I & II remakes, on the other hand…
