Who's better Jonathan or Charlotte? Hope you enjoy the video, if you would like to see more Castlevania vids go here :) ua-cam.com/play/PLYwJcYYZUDNr8T4G2bT4SUbp3bT4Vww1H.html
Johnathan is a little dry of a character, so I have to say Charlotte. That being said I think they work best as a team. Also I wish the talk option was more overplayed. Some things you would never find out about if it wasn't for the internet, like the dialogue you get from doing the taunt action in front of Vincent.
Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but there’s a hack called Portrait of Elegance that changes the art with Kojima’s art if you’re into it. I can attest it works on actual hardware as well. It even has art for the faces in the menu and the HUD Also, get well, man. Good to see you’re doing better!
I've seen a few mods that attempt to bring the DS Games art closer to Kojima's Work which shows how much her work meant to this franchise. I love how much passion this community has for these games, cool to hear that you can even play these mods on actual hardware too! Thanks, hope you enjoyed the video :)
THANK YOU. As much as I adore Aria and Ecclesia, Portrait of Ruin is definitely Iga's magnum opus, and I replay it about twice a year. Finally someone else recognizes its brilliance!
I'm glad someone else likes Castlevania PoR as much as I do, it might not be the best Castlevania, but it is fun and engaging, I only wish sub-weapons were easier to master.
I just learnt on my latest playthrough that you only need the sub weapon to hit ONCE then kill the enemy howerlver you like! Example: throw holy water at minotaur, ignore sub weapon, kill it asap with your weapon. Doing this with 2 master rings on the 2 minotaurs at dark academy makes it fly by!
Speak for yourself. I not only consider Portrait of Ruin the best Castlevania (and it's not even close) but also the best and most fun metroidvania I've ever played.
If you're like me and wondering what were the 5 songs that Yuzo Koshiro composed. I went ahead and looked them up. They were - Invitation of a Crazed Moon (That's the theme in the opening area of the castle, and the theme playing during this sequence of the video) - Destroyer (one of the boss fight themes) - The Gears Go Awry (The theme of the Tower Of Death area) - Dance of Sadness (Boss theme of Stella and Loretta) - Banquet of Madness (Final boss theme against the duo of Dracula & Death together)
Surprisingly, despite being a huge Koshiro fan, I did not really care for his offerings in this game. They're good for sure, but I don't find these very memorable in terms of composition.
These songs were also omitted from digital releases of Portrait of Ruin's soundtrack internationally. I asked him on Twitter at some point what was up with that, and even he had no idea what was going on with it.
So sorry to hear that you haven't been having a good go at it but I really do hope that you are able to stick around and grow again even after all of this time.
Hi! I just discovered you today through my recommendations. Needless to say, your videos are great! Nice editing, nice voice over, nice script I wish you greater success in the future and I hope you can heal from your ordeal.
Im on a igavania binge and really enjoying the dominus collection replaying my beloved DS castlevanias, that said, I hope youre ok mate! Was looking forward to following up your well written video with the order of ecclesia one!! Only to find you haven't posted in a year and you spoke of your struggles at the end of this video. I hope youre doing very well for yourself mate enjoying yourself. I hope this time away has been healthy and healing for you and look forward to your next igavania video essay!!
Playing this on the Dominus collection and I'm pretty shocked that PoR is considered 'mid' by large parts of the internet. I'm loving it. I think all the castlevanias are solid, weird that some are judged more harsh than others. I also love Dissonance and that one also gets a lot of flak for some reason.
It’s because of when it came out, portrait of ruin is like Castlevania 64 but the opposite. When Castlevania 64 came out the magazines couldn’t stop saying how it was the best entry, how it was better than symphony of the night. Now everyone sees Castlevania 64 for what it is.
Love the attention to detail, writing, and passion that went into this. Much appreciated as a fellow Castlevania fan. I haven't played through Portrait of Ruin in a very long time but looking forward to revisiting the title with the Dominus Collection. Got really nostalgic watching this video and fully resonated with your love letter to Portrait of Ruin. It's undoubtedly my favorite DS Castlevania. I'm sorry that you went through a tough time during the process of making this video. I can't imagine the hardships you went through, but glad you continued your passion for gaming and UA-cam. Look forward to your inevitable return with a new video(at your own pace of course, don't overdo it).
Thank you Dominus for bringing this gem back. Now I can enjoy "Jonathon! Charlotte! Jonathan! Charlotte! Jonathan! Charlotte! Jonathan! Charlotte!" As much as I want
This is the Igavania, that I get the craving to actually replay. Just enjoyable ride, without the the huge need to grind, without missing something super important. I like the aesthetic of mixing semi-modern architecture with gothic. Art style, bit bland, but gets the job done. Power to you.
Big agree, this game is a fantastic refinement of all Igarashi's work to that point. Just starting Ecclesia now, I'm very curious to see how it stacks up.
So glad you're back! I found your channel during your period of inactivity and was impressed with the quality of all your videos so I stuck around hoping you'd return and finish the series some day. This video was well worth the wait! Sorry you've been going through it, hope things get better. I'd love to see you tackle the Bloodstained games, since they are Castlevania in all but name. Ritual of the night in particular is one of my favourite games of all time and I know that almost no one will agree with this take but I actually like it more than all the Castlevania games, including SOTN. I'm aware of all of its flaws, but I still love it regardless, and think it introduced tons of cool new mechanics and ideas.
Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed the video, as Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night is a Koji igarashi directed spiritual follow up of his Castlevania games I will definitely be covering it :)
Thank you for giving this game some much needed love! It’s one of my favorite Castlevsnias. The dual player ability, the fact that Jonathan can use swords & whips is great, and for some reason, I absolutely love the Egyptian levels! What a great game
Didn't even know you uploaded this year, but it was a pleasant surprise nonetheless. You're definitely the king when it comes to analytical Igavania content, and I can't wait to see the conclusion to this project sometime this decade.
All your thoughts on Portrait of Ruin are the same as mine and I did enjoy the game so much! I picked it up this year after New Year's Eve and immediately fell in love with the over the topness and characters, I can't express how much I think about Jonathan and Charlotte hehe! And I'd say this game could be my third favorite Castlevania metroidvania game below Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and Symphony of the Night, it's an absolute classic that deserves more love since I barely see guides or discussion about it online! Also I'm very sorry for what you had to go through for months, I'm drawing as I watched your video and honestly I'm so glad you're doing much better nowadays! It genuinely makes me smile and I can hope you get back on track and all that good stuff, keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for all the hard work you've put into your content! It was thanks to your in-depth looks on these games that I've dived into many of the lesser-known Igavanias and became even more enamoured with this wonderful franchise. I hope you're doing well and that things only get better for you from this point on 🙏
No mention of invitation of a crazed moon or whatever is the first song that plays once inside the castle? Because dear god that song slapped so hard it had no right to be so good
I'm so glad you're back, Fox! My heart breaks to hear about your struggles. Please take as much time as you need; health always comes first. We'll be here rooting for you :) And, of course, excellent video as always! Made my day.
Haven't played this one yet I hope to soon. Excellent video as always. When something awful happens to me I just have to remember that the sun will rise in the morning just the same. Darkness is temporary. Can't wait to see what you do next.
After playing and 100%ing Aria of Sorrow on the switch for the first time (advance collection) I felt the same sense of discovery and completion, just like I have had many years before, playing Dawn of Sorrow, and Portrait of Ruin on the DS. Great video solidifying me in my memories with Portrait of Ruin, and I'm certain that any day now, I am going to dust off my old DS Lite to play those two great Castlevania games all over again. I don't know why, but Order of Ecclesia felt different than those two on the DS, and in a bad way for me, never finished it. I would like to hear your opinion on that game in your next video.
I'm glad that you give what PoR deserve. This game got really some love from gamers and developper. I love how Charlotte and Jonathan got some details that make them alive. Plus, Charlotte was the first one to give me a kink on Witch/Sorceress/Magician.
Finally you're back! I loved your retrospective videos a lot, I'm sorry to hear about the troubles you've been going through but glad to know you're doing better now. I'm excited to see your take on Order of Ecclesia since it's my favorite game in the series. Portrait is my second favorite so I'm happy to see it get recognition and praise.
Thank you very much, Ecclesia is going to be very interesting as I don't think I've ever played through it more than once. I remember enjoying it at the time of it's release so it's exciting to revisit it all these years later.
Well well, a sight for sore eyes. Glad to see you uploading again. In the meantime I've been mastering the whip. Yeah writing is hard, GOOD writing is hard. Either way I am always up to learn from you. Glad to have you back dude.
Thanks for giving portrait the kudos it deserves. Quite possibly the most underrated/ under appreciated CV game. While not quite my favorite Igavania, it’s definitely near the top of the list. Ecclesia is where the fatigue starts to set in for me, or maybe it’s because Ecclesia is just not as good as previous entries…? 🧐 😬 🤷🏻♂️ PS- glad to hear you’re in a better place now 🙏
Watching this because of the Dominus Collection news, you really made me want to go back to Portrait of Ruin! I never completed it on DS but maybe it's time to get that out again while I wait to get the Switch collection...
Another excellent video, welcome back OG! Portrait of Ruin is one of my favorite games in the franchise so I’m happy to see you enjoyed it as much as I’d hoped 😂 Sorry to hear about your troubles, hope all becomes better. You’ve inspired myself and so many others to really express their passion for this series, so seeing this video was such an awesome surprise. Take all the time you need. We’ll be here to see your thoughts on Order of Ecclesia, whenever you’re ready 💪
Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it :D I can assure you things are getting better day by day, I have just started work on Ecclesia so fingers crossed it will be out in a much shorter span of time :D
I hope you're doing well, you most certainly deserve a spot on this world! I will be patiently waiting for your OoE video since your style, voice and presentation are spot on and rather enjoyable to listen to. 😉
Hope you're in a better place now. Good video. I pre-ordered this game & got the Castlevania 20th Anniversary Collection kit with it as a pre-order bonus. It has a CD soundtrack, artbook, stylus with Castlevania logo, case for the 2 games, poster, & neat bloodseal box. 🧛♂️
Keep up with the awesome videos! Just found your channel through YT recommendations and was instantly interested because PoR is also my all time favorite Castlevania game :)
I've been on a Castlevania binge lately and I just found your channel today. I subscribed for the eventual Order of Ecclesia video due out in 2024 (looking at your upload history, hehe), and whatever you might do in the future. Really good stuff!
With the Dominus Collection out, I've now played most of the Igavania games, and Portrait of Ruin was a shocking refresher after having just played the Sorrow duology. The Sorrow games were good but something about Portrait just kept clicking, and never stopped. I'm on to Order of Ecclesia now. Which so far has been surprisingly demanding. Most Igavania handheld games are pretty easy.
I would not be surprised to see these DS Titles rereleased in some capacity. Or at least I hope so considering how absurd the cost retro games are these days.
Your videos are always awesome. I’d wait 100 years to watch the next one cause your videos are worth it, so don’t worry about us and make sure you take care of your self.
Great and very informative video.. This and Order of Ecclesia are my two favorites.. I'm actually about to start streaming ALL the metroidvanias on Twitch along with a host of retro titles😏... On another note Blessing and prosperity to you my brother, you will weather the storm... Nothing lasts forever and sun ALWAYS follows rain. Stay strong and I'm anticipating the next video.... Liked and subbed.✌👍
i loved this video and i totally agree that this game is absolutely excellent :^D if you ever feel up to making more videos, i'm excited to watch them!
Funny you bring up Yuzo Koshiro since the game that ironically continues the legacy of Portrait of Ruin is a game he worked in the past, before his time at Sega; Ys X : Nordics. The dual tag system is utilized in a really great way.
About Axe Armor; this is a callback to Symphony of the Night. After getting the Gravity boots, go to the library. There is a room under the Librarian that has an opening at the top allowing you to gravity jump straight into him and send him up in the air. You can do this repeatedly and you get a few items for doing so, one of which is the Axe Lord Armor. When you equip it, you hear Alucard yell "What?!" like he did when Death stole his stuff. You transform into an Axe Lord able to swing the axe but you can't jump at all or regen mana. It's a novelty item more than a useful one. Go back to the room after reaching the Upside-down Castle and bump the Librarian some more, you'll eventually get the Dracula Tunic, one of the best armors in the game. Edit: Forgot that there is a second way to get the Axelord Armor. After you beat the game for the first time, start a new one entering your name initally as AXEARMOR. You'll start with the armor in your inventory. Also I heard once that if you can kill the spike balls dropped down the stairs in the chapel by bone pillars, they have a small chance of dropping the armor as well.
Really find the Co Op aspect and the Mario 64 esc portait system Super interesting! A great way of adding more depth and varity without losing the Themes that the series is built on (I guess! I have not played manly Caslevanias!)
The best part about Portrait of Ruin is that it's the only game I don't recall having to walk in and out of the same room for what felt like hours, killing the same enemy over & over hoping that it would drop that one item/soul/seal that I needed. I'm going crazy with this nonsense playing Order of Ecclesia in the Dominus collection right now!!
I played this actually only last month. It was certainly a fun time and i genuinely liked what i got even if i admit i didnt interact with the two playable characters system as much as i should have
One of my favorite things about this game is it has my favorite cheat code of all time. Still like Dawn of Sorrow more you want to up your luck more to up your chances of getting the monsters soul and there item.
Who's better Jonathan or Charlotte?

Feels great returning to this video after the Dominus Collection was finally released :)
Aye! That's why I'm here!
same, I had picked these up off eBay on the DS a couple years ago, but it’s nice to see them given new life
Seeing it for the first time after playing Dominus Collection.
Also Portrait of Ruin opening was made by Kamikaze Douga. The studio behind JoJo's Bizarre Adventure 3d opening.
that explains Jonathan's pose when you hold up.
Well, Castlevania has always had a lot of JoJo references because Iga is a fan of the series.
No wonder it looked familiar. That studio knows how make a cgi opening

It is one of the best Castlevania series ever made... right now i try to completing the nest of evil quest
Speak for yourself. I not only consider Portrait of Ruin the best Castlevania (and it's not even close) but also the best and most fun metroidvania I've ever played.

I've been on a Castlevania binge lately and I just found your channel today. I subscribed for the eventual Order of Ecclesia video due out in 2024 (looking at your upload history, hehe), and whatever you might do in the future. Really good stuff!
This game is my favorite of the Igavanias. It's got a rocking soundtrack and the character zapping is awesome.
Just playing through this again for the firsr time in well over 15 years!
Its actually BETTER than I remember ❤
It's great to see this game get a lot more of a following. I absolutely love Portrait of Ruin. It's my favorite of the DS games
And with the dominus collection is very neat
YOOOOO the man uploaded again 🎉
I love the take on this game, this is one of my favorites. Especially because of the music. Hope everything is well. Stay Strong
Really solid! Need to track this one down now 😅
It was a really great surprise seeing this today; I hope you're doing well now!
Welcome back, man
Thank You :)
Miss you man, hope you keep upload again
Igavania, also know as metroidvania.
Portrait of ruin was my first casltevania, and a personal favorite. Definitelly needs more attention.
I wait on baited breath for another collection release with portrait of ruin like the other two they released on switch
Not sure if you'll see this or are up for it, but could you make an Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia video? Your videos are great!
Still waiting for Order of Ecclesia ;_;
PS: Hope you doing well!
Love love love this game. My favorite out of the DS games. Sorry to hear what happened to you. You’re doing some good content.
I really hope one of the next Castlevania Collections has this.
i loved this video and i totally agree that this game is absolutely excellent :^D if you ever feel up to making more videos, i'm excited to watch them!
Also I heard once that if you can kill the spike balls dropped down the stairs in the chapel by bone pillars, they have a small chance of dropping the armor as well.
finally, those two years were worth it
That's genuinely great to read thank you :D
First time finding this channel. Hopefully we see the Ecclesia video soon.
I need to know what the succubus say to Charlotte and Jonathan, and all those dialogues OMG
Really find the Co Op aspect and the Mario 64 esc portait system Super interesting! A great way of adding more depth and varity without losing the Themes that the series is built on (I guess! I have not played manly Caslevanias!)
It is very hard not to think of Mario 64 with the Portrait worlds, part of me wonders if that may have partially inspired them.
"would you get a grip? you got a gorgeous girl right next to you."
Lol I watched all your videos a few months ago. Welcome back
Thank you, glad you like my content :D
My first ever castlevania game and I really enjoy it for a long time. Make me fan of the series.
12:13 it's always so much fun to see people using the Chipsynth OPS7. Such a good, albeit complex synth
I played this actually only last month. It was certainly a fun time and i genuinely liked what i got even if i admit i didnt interact with the two playable characters system as much as i should have
Indeed a fantastic game ❤
Damn, seems like this channel has been abandoned. What a great review. Hope the owner is doing well for himself.
I remember when the game came out, I read the pie was the best wepon for the Belmont fight.
I really hope there's a ds collection announcement soon.
Ayyy you're back.
I sure am, hope you enjoyed the video :D
@@schemingfox It was awesome, and I'm now replaying the game on hard because of the video.
One of my favorite things about this game is it has my favorite cheat code of all time. Still like Dawn of Sorrow more you want to up your luck more to up your chances of getting the monsters soul and there item.
I liked this game a lot better than Bloodstained Ritual of the Night. Glad this got some love
My fav Castlevania Ever. Hell, even the dialogues are nice in this one
