    Agree completely Ollie, the burn is crucial. We have found that using Sea Drops before each dive is also a terrific benefit, spit is fine, but a single drop in each side rubbed in, then washed out after dropping in has been fantastic for us for quite a few years now.

      @@TheShedStudiosthat's not why. It's a protective silicone layer that protects the lenses in transport. Note that doing this wil NOT eliminate fogging entirely. Masks fog because of the temperature difference between the water and inside of the mask which is heated by your head and nose. Always spit on the lenses before diving and the mask will never fogg up. Also, note that anti-fogging products are a waste of money.

    Most fascinating thing happened to me recently on a trip to Grand Cayman, I finally enjoyed snorkeling for once after about 10 years of doing it. WHY? I bought polycarbonate on accident and no matter what you do to them - THEY ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT FOG!!!!
    Everyone thinks tempered glass, but if you’re not diving beyond 15 feet, why would you bother with glass and fight this misery all day like I have for ten years. I quite literally had crystal clear vision for an hour plus each day and never one single time had to clear fog.
    What a revelation it has been. I’ve listened to every store manager tell me how much value there is in cressi, scubapro, etc and tempered glass only to throw them away because they weren’t even worth using. You travel to unique places the world over in search of crystal clear water only to battle fog.
    But some cheap polycarbonate lenses and enjoy the shit out of it!!!!! Best advice I can give anyone who doesn’t go deeper than 15-20 feet

      @@olliecraig-primalpursuit thanks for the prompt reply. i got it off amazon in my country. It came with a box and directions. It seems real but it is lacking any marking that says tempered or T anywhere that I can see. Their official video for it says that it is tempered, so I guess it must be. Also I see no T in their video for it. Seems a little strange for me though. I just tried the lighter trick. I could smell something chemical burned off. I guess it was the silicone residue. Then I did the toothpaste again. Then their brand defogger. Unfortunately after I got all ready to go out the wind starting kicking up here😅😅😅so I will try to go again earlier in the day tomorrow. It is a bit of a process for me to go to the beach. The sea water here is often polluted with plastic and other junk, sometimes trash even. Especially later in the afternoon after the wind and waves pickup. I saw a dead seabird yesterday, which was both sad and gross. Probably choked on some plastic. It takes me about 20 minutes or so after I leave my house and change into my wetsuit and snorkel gear before I go into the water. Do you think that it matters greatly if I use the defogger solution right before going in? I sort of prefer to use it before I leave my house, that way I can clean it with fresh water instead of the salty dirty sea water. I will test both ways and report back my findings.

    Is this a coating the manufacturer wants on the lens? If so, why are we burning it off? If they don't want it on the lens, then why is it on there? I think I heard you say it's skirt silicone residue. Perhaps I misunderstood. If it's actually silicone, then you wouldn't think a quick hit with the lighter would do anything because of high melting point of silicone

    • @olliecraig-primalpursuit
      @olliecraig-primalpursuit  Рік тому

      No matter the quality of the mask, during the manufacturing process, a thin film of silicone oil condenses on the glass lens of your new dive mask. This oil will cause rapid fogging that is resistant to conventional anti-fog measures and must be removed. Anyway, In summary it needs to come off otherwise 95 percent of masks will fog. in my experience, more expensive masks are easier to defog, some not even needing it at all

Only one out of 3 were not foggy, I tried this trick - doesn't work, I bought gel $20 doesn't work, I burned again-nope, toothpaste-not helped. I asked refund for two masks-no chance because I used it, so I took an axe and destroyed it, just to feel better. I went to a public market an bought Chinese for $15. Now, 4th year I am using Chinese one. Even though I am sperafisher, I will nevere spend a single cent again in my entire life on some brand. I spend around 2-5 hours in the sea. Interesting. I’ve generally found the opposite to be true. I’ve used many different masks and tried cheap ‘Chinese’ masks even though they mostly all come from China, and I’ve found the more expensive/branded masks don’t fog nearly as bad as cheap ones but hey everyone has different experiences. Also, I find the glass on more expensive masks is better quality with less distortion etc in the water. Sounds like you’ve got one that works for you though so maybe buy an extra as a spare! Also, best trick I’ve since learnt for anti fogging once used lighter etc, is to spit and rub saliva into the lenses before you dive, let it dry off for 10 minutes at least then wash/rinse in water before putting on face and this work’s amazingly
