Dodging about left to right seemed at first an uncertainty working in the bears mind, like thinking it over or weighing the situation should I chance this strange something alone in the woods. Had an encounter with a black bear just like this last spring. It was only about 150lbs an from the moment it seen me an decides to start following I knew I had to do something. I didn't have bear spray or a gun, and it was backing me into a thicket of thorn bushes. I went from talking to it just like this guy to realizing that wasn't working. So In a split second decision I decided im done backing down. I put my arms up an out an screamed at it as loud as I could while stomping my feet towards it. That bear immediately said F this an went straight up the closest tree.

That's how it's done with black bears. With grizzlies you stay calm and stand your ground if charged.

You made my night man! 😂🤣😂🤣😂
All comments were sooooo funny and then you killed me! 🤣
Having dealt with my share of black bears, this guy was way too quiet. The bear seemed curious more than anything and was not acting aggressively. Being loud and getting big would likely have it turning tail and running. Second, if that didnt work and the bear keeps advancing after that, dont let it get as close as this guy did. From the video it looked like it got ten feet from him a couple of times. If the bear is voluntarily following you after youve made attempts to scare it and backed away while facing it, its getting sprayed as soon as its in range of the spray.
Why did the bear keep climbing trees while following him?
@WhiteRabbitDreams that's an escape path for them. If you scare a bear enough and move in on it quick, they'll often run up a tree to get away from you. Again, this one seemed curious so it was probably trying to go tree to tree to have an escape route if it wanted one.
Clearly bears need to get together and ban all assault sprays. They could also put up signs entering any forest that say "Bear spray free zone"...that would help.
I’m also wondering if he was calling the bear the right pronoun??🤣

I live in black bear country. That bear was an adolescent, just being curious. You don't have to jump around and act crazy but if you would have raised your voice and yelled at it, it would have scattered fairly quickly. Also you could have sprayed the grass in front of you. As soon as it got a snort it would have backed right off.
Excellent idea, that should be standard. It did look like a juvenile to me. I disagree with the commenter that said the bear was in predatory mode. Don't think so, but that's why you have the pepper spray. 💕
I disagree. Because if you cause it pain without touching it you can be sure that bear will most likely never attack a human ever in its life. It will associate humans with intense pain.

Never take a chance. Young bear or not, there's always instinct and that first time. He's big enough to be deadly. Facing the bear, walking backward is the safe thing to do. He may have been attacked if he turned his back. Talking to the bear was a way of trying to keep him at a distance. Better to hit the bear so he got a snoot full of spray. Make him regret following a human. He'll never forget it. Glad he's ok.

Kept letting it get too close. Dude is a fool.
Judging by these comments i think everybody should go out in the woods more often. We would have a lot less ignorant people that think bears are just curious and playful big dogs. Bears dont "play" with humans. That bear was sizing him up and the dude was giving every indication he was prey. If he didn't have bear spray and kept doing what he was doing he would have 100% gotten mauled. That bear was getting closer and more confident every second. He was just waiting for the right opportunity.
Exactly!!!
BINGO!
Yeah textbook definition of what not to do. Stand tall and yell loud! Let the bear know you arent prey
Yeah, way too close for comfort as if the ease with which it climbed trees _then_ closed the gap (still too long to deploy by then, imo) wasn't indication enough. No thank you!
Just the people that would rather be alone in the woods with a bear than a man 😂
I believe that the most humane thing you can do for a bear that is so interested in you to follow you, is to discourage that behaviour IMMEDIATELY. If yelling loudly and waving your arms (while holding your bear spray) doesn’t work, you must use the spray. This way in the future, the bear will keep its distance from humans and all will stay safe…both the bear and the humans. This is just my opinion though.
Sounds like he was calling the bear to him.
Rught. I think he just wanted to use the spray. It’s sad.

People saying the bear is being "playful" are ridiculous. I promise you that bear does not want to play with this guy! It is curious about a potential food source and testing boundaries. Very glad that he had spray with him.
Yeah. The soft playful voice he is using doesn't exactly make the bear perceive any threat.
@@plorks445 exactly, every time the bear gets closer without the man getting loud/aggressive, it gets more confident that he is not a threat and therefore easy prey.
Black bears are not people eaters like Grizzly's and Brown bears.
@@jamescostello6529 sorry but you are completely wrong on that one. In fact a black bear attack is more likely to be predatory than a grizzly or brown bear.
@@gooddogbern573 I'm not disagreeing at all, just responding to the comment that said they don't eat people. I do believe that the bear in the video was displaying predatory behaviour and that lines up with black bears having that tendency.
My advice is to not talk to the bear like it’s a 3 year old child but to talk and yell like you’re much meaner than the bear! I’m glad the bear spray worked.. but really I think the bear was thinking you were gonna pet him and give him a treat!
The bear 🐻 got a treat...
Doesn't that depend in the kind of bear? Black bears yell aggressively towards them but grizzly bears have calm communication with them?? I've luckily never encountered either but I hike in grizzly country so I definitely carry the hot sauce.

Didn't seem to be overly aggressive but better to be safe than sorry. 👍 both went home, that's a happy ending.

@@xxXxXxGxXxXxx your ignorance is insane, I lived in Alaska and I know three people that got attacked. And no not because they were messing with them
My understanding (from watching another video) is that bear spray should be deployed well beyond the close range this bear gets. The other video made mention of how quickly a charging bear can cover ground and the idea of bear spray is to lay out clouds along the bear's intended path, ahead of the bear so that it has to go through the stuff to reach you. Apparently, this large bear spray canisters has some decent range. And, as noted in this video, as soon as the individual deployed the spray, the bear was off and running, so I think I'd opt for the quick deployment of any bear heading my way.
I have one that sprays 40 feet. The thing about this situation is, if the guy would've been loud and aggressive rather than his soft, friendly, "hey, bear", he probably would've scared the bear off without even needing the spray. Black bears are way more skittish than most people realize. But outside of that, he definitely waits wayyyyy too long and lets the bear get way too close before he FINALLY sprays. And it only took a quick tap of the trigger.
Yeah and your goal should be to deter the bear, not hurt it.

Acting human is the wrong choice here. If you don’t have bear spray, you do actually need to communicate in a way the bear understands.
The bear was an uncompensated participant in this commercial.
He's smart enough to record knowing that the cameraman never dies
Unless you are filming a tsunami in 2004 in SE Asia...lots of videos and photos showing a big wave coming at the unknown cameraman.
Unless you’re on a movie set with Alec Baldwin…
Too soon?
he was wearing a red shirt, though
What a dumb comment.
It’s old and unfunny.
That's because the camera men that did die never uploaded their footage
I think an indispensable skill in woods-craft is to be able to "read" animals' behavior...to be able to discern what they are thinking when a human/animal encounter occurs. My interpretation of this encounter is that the man did well to back up slowly in order to show the bear he himself had no aggressive intentions. However, after 50 feet of that approach, it became evident he had convinced the bear he had no evil intentions, that the bear was not in the least intimidated by him, and that now the bear was going to see how much he could impose himself on the man. When an animal develops that mindset, further retreat only reinforces further imposition by the animal. Now the animal begins to interpret further retreat as increasing fear in the man, which results in escalating aggression by the animal. I would have taken a stand at about the 50--75 foot mark and shown the bear that I am not helpless...that I have defensive weapons that can make him regret his aggression. This is, in fact, how it turned out anyway. But...had the guy waited too long, and the bear done a full out charge, it might have been too late. After all, how far can you walk backwards through woods without tripping...and triggering a charge?

That was the best advertisement for anything I’ve ever seen in my life…my eyes were first off glued to the whole thing, then I instantly felt the need to go out and purchase a bottle of Sabre bear spray as soon as the video was over… I haven’t yet, but I’m still thinking about so it’s probably only a matter of time at this point.
Watch the video again, maybe that'll help the motivation. I watched it three times in a row and immediately ordered a case online....
That young bear was getting bolder and bolder, it was thinking of attacking you from the moment it saw you but was intimidated; none of his prey stand upright like that, the closest reference on how to take that animal down for food would be charging the trees like he’s doing (could also be an instinctual response to test your intimidation) but in short he was out foraging and when he saw you was thinking of making a human sandwich.
No, he just looked curious. Believe me if he wanted to hunt him down he would.
@@E1evenMusic Not sure about bears but many animals do what Shane said, they see if you're a prey or a predator by falsely charging you
@@Hamza-uh6oy by that spray, he thought humans are predators. Hopefully he never wants to attack humans. Lol
bears climb trees when they feel insecure
From what I've gathered I don't think there are many animals that would actually eat humans as we quite literally taste horrible to them but hunger is always the dominant side when close to starvation so you can never be careful.
I'm glad that the spray worked for him, but as someone who has lived his whole life in Grizzly country, I can promise that bear was just curious. Had it been set on really attacking the spray usually does not stop the attack. None of us around here would ever trust our lives to that stuff. When it comes to protecting yourself from a potential bear attack, a gun is always going to be your best defense.
I agree with you that bear looked young and curious. He was using the trees to run up if he had to. And a yell and a bluff attack on him would’ve sent him running. But I don’t agree that bear spray wouldn’t work on other bears. I’ve seen other videos on attacking bears and it does work. I hate people that guns are first option. We know you’re scared so maybe stay out of their home?
And this bear will always stay away from people so next scaredy-cat with a gun hopefully won’t shoot him.
@@HayleysComet3 i feel like you say that but once you’re actually out there, you will NOT feel safe because essentially you are just prey. And what if a bear comes to your home? Then what? We are mammals too and thats my territory, wherever i choose to walk is my domain (as is with every animal in their head) and the bear will quickly learn or perish. A gun has saved my life on 2 occasions out in west texas wild and i wouldnt go out without one, it’s like going to a warzone with a knife.
@@wodwarrior8463 I understand your fear, bears definitely are scary but I would trust the bear spray over a firearm any day. Bullets don’t always stop bears especially if you miss. But spray is easy to get to the target and from what I’ve seen it works great.
Most experts say you have less than 2 seconds before an attacking bear is on top of you ripping your face off. If you're extremely well trained with a sidearm (like navy seal status) then a handgun is a useful tool against an actual attack. Otherwise, bear spray is more effective
@@Mister.Bone_Saw I agree. I carry my 44 magnum revolver, ready at the hip, whenever I am out in nature... fishing, camping, hunting, or even just going for a short hike.

I've had many run-ins with black bears, this was the wrong approach.. You move away scared and talking in a calm voice, the bear is going to feel safe and do what it wants. This guy probably had food in his pack or on him that the bear was interested in. You have to get loud, get aggressive, and be the one making the bear move backwards. Won't work with grizzly or other bears, that will get you eaten, but black bears and easily scared away.
100%. A black bear becomes more confident and more aggressive with every step you move back and he moves forward. These are predatory animals, not people who you can reason with.

@@Sniperboy5551 nobody said they are pack animals, but this guy been walking backwards for long distance so it could happen that he accidentally enters another bear territory and he gets attacked from behind so.
Yall are straight idiots if you think that bear was a threat. He endangered himself more than that bear did.
The real move is to start following the bear in turn to assert dominance. Just watch out for the human mace ....
He looks like he just wants a hug. A bear hug.
😁
A last hug
And the guy talks as if he is asking for a hug but keeps walking away. Had the bear confused.
LOL, sounded like he was inviting him to supper. Speaking in such a mild mannered tone only encouraged the bears curiosity to size him up and flex on him while he continued to yield ground. Luckily he did not trip walking backwards for so long, may have triggered the bears instincts to capitalize on the situation, even just run and swat. Glad the spray seemed to put an end to the curiosity, hopefully it was enough to put a little fear in the bear for the next person.
Exactly. This was a 'how to training course' on how not to deal with a curious bear.
I agree. He should have been raising his voice at the bear and using threatening, loud tones. I would have used the spray way before he did.
@@AirstripBum It seemed like the bear slowed down slightly when his voice was a bit louder at times.

The way the bear jumps on the tree is amazing considering how big they are. If you are unarmed there really isn’t much you can do. They climb trees , can outrun you, and can swim also
Yep...
We humans have a lot of physical limitations when it comes to potentially dangerous wildlife.
@@davidhilton8680 We humans a pack animal and as such we are the apex predator of every environment,
He was not jumping on the tree, he was fighting his instinct to flee by starting to climb the tree and was nervous. The hiker made mistakes, but hey could have been worse so this worked out. What he should have done was stop, held his ground and did everything he could to waive his arms, yell, or even throw rocks/sticks and this bear would have either climbed the tree or ran away. In the rare event a black bear attacks you, you never play dead, but instead fight back attacking his eyes and sensitive snout with anything you can, even if just your hands. It is well documented that fighting a black bear is often successful and unlike a grizzly that is attacking you for defensive reasons, a black bear has different intent, so don't make it easier for the bear to begin his dining experience...
The way bears climb trees is so surreal. Hundreds of pounds, no opposable thumbs and yet it just glides up the tree like it was walking
With all that walking backwards, I kept thinking what would happen if he fell. I've only had one black bear encounter in which I really waved my arms and screamed at the bear and then slowly backing away. I was letting it know I was not food I didn't have to move nearly as much or use my bear spray.
There are times his tactic was correct, likely when he first saw the bear. However, he should have stopped, held his ground and became aggressive to scare the bear as soon as he noticed it was following him. You are correct in his action potentially being of danger, and in this instance, had he fell, it would have likely triggered an attack. Almost all black bear encounters with black bears will have them flee, and this behavior is exceedingly rare. In that regard, this was one of the most dangerous encounters you can have with one.
Everyone has an opinion and every situation is different. I think this was handled well. My impression is that the bear is young and more curious than anything. I probably would have sprayed him much earlier. All that backing up was risky. Hopefully yogi will now have strong enough negative experience with humans that he will keep his distance. Thanks for posting this, it is very educational.
Exactly my thought! Was waiting for momma to come out. Lol
They guy literally said he was baiting the bear on Facebook. He was doing a tutorial which bear sprays work best and said always try them out on younger bears first like he did in that video. @@SoulShadowXYwell I am not impressed to hear this. If he truly was baiting them and subjecting any to the misery of the spray just for his ‘tests’ then I am quite disgusted by it. If this was in my area and I had more info I would probably have passed it on to the local CO.
@@stevehamilton3181 How else are they supposed to test it? It’s unpleasant but its not like its lethal.
@@stevehamilton3181At first I felt the same way but then again they have to test it somehow and this experience will likely condition the bear into being more fearful of humans and less likely to get into close proximity with people, which could potentially be dangerous for both people and the bear itself.
Very impressed with how calm you were trying to give the young youngling a chance to walk away.
Something Anakin clearly didn't do
He was baiting the youngling. He is attempting to gain the Dark Side powers.
When the bear started jumping onto trees, he was just practicing for what he was planning to do to the person. Notice how he started doing that as he got closer and closer to the person. The next time he jumped, it was going to be on the person.
That is the smallest bear I’ve ever seen in my life😂
Since most have never seen a bear in the wild, I'm not sure your point. Regardless, this bear is quite capable of killing your frail and slow excuse for a body.
He literally kept calling the bear. What a natural air head.
I had a similar problem on Eglin AFB in 1990. Was walking backward just the same as this guy. Just didn’t have bear spray; only a 12 ga. shotgun. After walking like that for about 1/4 mile, I was beginning to get worried about dark setting in. I still had about 1.5 miles to go to get to my truck to drive out. I decided to stand my ground and try to yell and warn it off. It never left and got closer… I shot the rabbit three times before I felt safe. Never underestimate the danger presented by those cute ears and tail.

I was intrigued to watch how the Bear was closing down the distance between it and the man. Very subtly 8-10 inches with each
step. Very clever, intelligent stalking. No question the Bear was timing it's attack. Each tree it climbed was 2-3 feet closer to the
man than the last. Nothing the Bear did was by accident.
Not aggressive behavior. This is curiosity

I don't know much but it seems like if you have a deterrent that you should use it sooner and not keep backing up for so long. If you're walking backwards you're more likely to fall and then you'd be dead. Just remember when in bear country the best deterrent is to take a slow Uncle with you.

Why did the bear climb on the trees? To impress the guy?
The way he had many chances where he could’ve very easily made one wrong move walking backwards and tripping on one of the many logs on the ground😭 I was so worried he would fall on his back and the bear would come storming
Yea, we've been primed for that scenario by countless horror movies where someone falls and can't get up or the car suddenly won't start.
That's what I was thinking too
Ehh, he was walking very slowly. And likely looking backwards more often than you can tell with the camera. Not very easy to trip when you are being calm and slow like this dude was.
Tripping while doing the walking backwards thing is a massive hazard and shouldn't be discounted.
It was quite intense.that big bear moved fast .I thought it was going to pounce from the tree.the guy dealt with this scenario very well.
Imagine if he had forgotten his bear spray that day 💀
He would have been what we call s*** out of luck.
Stay strapped
Actually, in this instance, the bear spray likely would not have been needed. He should have simply stopped as soon as he realized the bear was following him, waived his arms, began yelling and doing whatever he could to scare the bear away. It would have quickly retreated or climbed the tree. Like a firearm, bear spray is always the last resort as it is literally your last line of defense and only available when the bear is too close. Deterrence is always better at a distance and while this hiker attempted to slowly walk away, it clearly did not work, so the next strategy per the behavior of the bear was to scare it.
The thing to keep in mind here (watch again), every time this guy put a tree or bush between him and the bear, it advanced on him. It kept distance all other times.
Are you calling him intentionally so u can advertise this spray ?
This is not a dog that you can call and it will follow you. It was his attempt to show the bear he was not a threat, which while advisable in many instances including likely when he first saw this one, he needed to switch to aggression once he recognized the bear was continuing to follow him after it should have recognized he was human, and not the animal the bear thought he was.
