  • President Vladimir Putin's ongoing invasion of Ukraine has led to a tightening of dictatorial powers within Russia. Free speech is virtually non-existent and the public realm is now dominated by outspoken nationalists, who want more war, not less.

A little sociology from Russia: as a Russian, I can say that most of the Russian youth either fully support Ukraine or want an end to the war, many are aware of who is the aggressor in this situation. Especially girls, it seems to me that 9 out of 10 young women are very critical of government actions. With the male half, everything is more complicated, in Russia many men were brought up in a traditional masculine culture, with a cult of war and the state, so even among young people many men support the army and the military and the special operation (although most guys are critical of the state - the position is widespread that Putin did not prepare the army for war, that the command was inept, etc.). Among the older generation, there are much more supporters of the government, the older the more. Also, as in other countries, older people are more prone to racism and xenophobia. Try to imagine a situation when your relative of the older generation says the phrase "why do these Ukrainian women give birth at all."

I often see Western comments like "why don't the Russians oppose", "why don't you stop the war" and so on. But it should be understood that the repressive machine in Russia is very strong, there are more than 5 million security officials in the country, law enforcement agencies monitor social networks, and so on. It is very difficult to organize a meeting of people with anti-war views - concerts of musicians who spoke out against the war are canceled, people who came to such concerts are fined or fired from their jobs. There is simply no force that could appoint some sort of rally, etc., because media personalities like comedians, musicians, bloggers can get a prison term that is longer than the term for serial murder (not a joke). When Navalny held rallies, I was still at school - needless to say, even before the rallies began, we were threatened with expulsion and dismissal for our parents if we participated in rallies. In the case of participation in rallies, a person was fired from work without the right to be reinstated. And even with all this, hundreds of thousands of people came out to protest against the annexation of Crimea, against Putin, in support of Navalny. In 2023-23, many people even went out to single pickets against the war, the number of those arrested was more than 15 thousand. Russian people are very brave and many were not afraid to support Ukraine, despite the danger to life, the danger to the family.
But it is almost impossible to fight this, which is why many people leave Russia. Mostly young people, IT specialists, musicians, artists, designers are leaving, and I want to say that you should not think that those Russians who came to your country, be it Germany or the USA, are the same people who support fratricidal war , most likely these are adequate people fleeing from their government. Russian nationalists often say the phrase that Russia should not have borders, in the sense that Russia should take over the whole world, it's funny, but really now Russia has no borders, but in a completely different meaning, Russians come to other countries, spreading their culture , but this is not a culture of destruction, as in Russia itself, Russian emigrants create their own business in other countries, help develop these countries. The Russia that these people bring with them is not the Russia that destroys the population of Ukraine (and it also destroys the population of Russia, in fact, the numbers speak for themselves). I hope we will be able to prove that Russians are kind, polite people who respect foreign cultures and I hope that there will be no excessive Russophobia - those Russians who leave did not choose the current government and sincerely regret what happened, regret all the more that there is no closer we are a people than Ukrainians and Belarusians, and how bitter it is to see that the government of the Russian Federation directly or indirectly destroys our neighbors. It is very nice to see that in Japan, the Baltics and other countries, Russians and Ukrainians are working together, creating content together and organizing assistance for refugees. I hope that the imperial ambitions of Russian politicians and oligarchs will not quarrel our peoples. With love from the South of Russia, where there are many people from Ukraine (and my ancestors are also from there), there is also a monument to the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko in my city (some even brought flowers to him, but this is forbidden), there are restaurants with Ukrainian food. Let's not quarrel and be citizens of the world, the most important thing in the world is people and human lives, and not what color the passport is, regimes and dictators replace each other, and human relations cannot be replaced by anything, and if they are destroyed, there is no future for humanity☮☮🟡🔵

We witnessed protests erupting in a country with a regime as oppressive as the russian one: Iran. Yet, unlike russians who after a few protests ran scared, Iranian women keep protesting, fighting... even with people injured and killed. Seems that Iranian women have more balls and courage than russian men. No matter how bad their government is responding to the protests, they don't give up. Unlike russians. If it's true that a significant part of the population is against this war, I could never imagine how weak and coward they are. So don't say russians want to do something but they can't.

Russian on the other hand has little to gain from stopping the war ( the war is in Ukraine, not on their soil) but has lots to lose if they protest. So, it's easier to just keep quiet.
the only way to make the people stand up is to collapse the economy of Russia, but that would also give Putin a reason to be more aggressive. So, it's stale mate. Instead of protesting the Ukrainian war, the Russian people should protest for Putin to step down instead.

Yeah, classic "whataboutism". You can always do it and you should always ignore it because it's never a good faith argument. It presumes that all injustices are equal, that everyone has an equal say in them, one nation must be free from sin before anyone in that nation criticizes another, that all injustices must be addressed in order, and everyone must have the same priorities.
      Therefore:
All injustices are equal: US police brutality "justifies" anything that happens anywhere else in the world.
Everyone has an equal say in them: The US military must "end police brutality".
One nation must be free from sin before...: Your nation must end police brutality before anyone in that nation can possibly criticize a cynical invasion of Ukraine for the purposes of nationalism and energy control.
All injustices must be addressed in order: Your nation must end police brutality (and all the other things) /before it is even relevant/ to discuss a cynical invasion of Ukraine for the purposes of nationalism and energy control.
Everyone must have the same priorities: You cannot criticize the invasion of Ukraine, or Crimean elections, or even animal welfare or climate change until you address whatever it is we're pretending is the most important issue.
The correct answer is "go **** yourself, you dishonest, lying *****".

Honestly, unrelated but I like the art by the artist at the end. It had subtleties, portrayed an interesting image, looked aestheticically pleasing, used different artistic theories to glue things together. Such as the bright deep colors to represent the idealized beliefs of the soldiers paired with poppies, a source of the drug trade as well as dreary colors outside of the goggles to represent the dark, depressing nature of everything.
This attempt at competent art drives all the radical people crazy, though, at the end. Fucking hilarious to see, it fully illustrates how it's "radical or nothing". I do hope those artists can get put of Russia to probe for success with their artwork freely since the way one of them rubs their temples/face makes it seem like they are quite afraid of saying the wrong thing when answered a political question. Russia is scaring the world again.
To that, of course, there is a reason:
"The French remember. The Germans know..."
And those who are jealous cannot be counted.
And there can be different banzai
To say thank you for the lesson.
"The French remember. The Germans know..."
      The Americans don't know.
And we see fords through eternity
      And we pour space metal.
And then - what are our years,
      We keep the paternal banner,
And how we store it, go check.
"The French remember. The Germans know..."
Although we are not without losses.
And yet Russia is not evil at heart,
She is the first nation in her soul.

Watching the promotor respond to the critic with the argumement that art is more complicated than her question, is also ironoic. Soviet Art sought to simplifiy the role of art by making it an exhaltation of the state's primary goals, and life in Russia. I find it really interesting that this is your take. Is the implicit argument that much of the art produced in the west is and has been pro state? How many war flicks and defend our troops murals have been plastered over everything we see. Especially during the war in Iraq. Maybe in your bi costal box you forgot that half the planet turned the middle east to glass on the account of NYC and a couple of it's ugly glass and steel buildings. The funny thing to me is that this Russian guy rightly makes an implicit critique simply with the inclusion of poppy flowers. The cultural context of the absolute demonization of drug use and trade contrasted with the romanticized patriotic art. And the Russian nationalist is pissed because it either is degrading the meaning of patriotic art by creating valid questions around nationalism because it's imaginary or because it could somehow be viewed as a pro america piece
Either way you'd have to be some kind of idiot to figure any of that out and still have the balls to ask that question with such confidence.
It's similar to how Americans are often incredibly ignorant of how rich, and interesting the art produced in the USSR is still confident in talking about "western art" as though
A, the us has the longest most deep and innovate arts culture
      (It's not even remotely)
      And B
      RUSSIAN ART IS WESTERN ART
Same with the USSR. There's more of a connection cultural and literally between the Eastern European lineage of art and culture with the rest of Europe then the US has ever and will ever have. do you think Soviet art is somehow not connected to the west but Russian is??? A huge amount of early "western" art was made in places that later became part of the Soviet Union.
The Implicit idea here that art is superior under capitalism is so stupid it physically hurts. How many more hyper rushed games movie prequels and single color paintings is it gonna take before this country is gonna stop huffing its own farts about the piles of trash this broken system shamelessly dumps on us every year. Say what you will about the soviets and their restriction of speech and what not I agree but pretending that a single thing you wrote was intelligent is beyond me.

The Chinese flag all of a sudden popping up on institutions, houses, businesses, monuments, etc. But put yourself in the shoes of a nationalist who loves "their" land so much they'd give up their own mother for it. At least that is somewhat how far-right fascists, nationalists and dictators think and hide behind the facade of doing it for the motherland. Its quite an easy trap to fall hungry for power when you're one of those.

some of these men & women look to be old enough to have lived through at least part of the cold war yet they've seemingly convinced themselves that M.A.D is no longer a part of Western/US doctrine? or that the American's for some reason are incapable of responding a preemptive strike, I always find it interesting how some of these ultra-nationalist groups in both Russia and the US will tout the achievements of their own country's early warning system's while trying to make it seem as if the other side didn't also start their own system as far back as the 50's.
everyone literally has satellites dedicated to looking for the light source put off from ICBM's, that is their sole reason for having been created and is a pivotal part of ensuring nobody ever gets stupid enough to think they could launch a nuclear strike and come out the other side unscathed.

NATO is good at bullying small weak places like Bosnia, Yugoslavia, Libya etc. Try that with Russia and NATO will be toast😉 But hey, even NATO knows what’s good for them.

The General Synod of the Church of England has approved a decision that allows same-sex couples to "receive God's blessing" to live together, the website of the Anglican Church reports.
The Synod members also expressed "regret and repentance" over the "inability of the church to welcome LGBT people and for the harm that LGBT people have experienced and continue to experience in churches."
The decision on the blessing for LGBT couples, "was adopted by a majority vote in the chambers of bishops, clergy and laity after a significant debate for two days." In addition, the texts of the "Prayer of Love and Faith" were recommended, which can be "voluntarily used in churches for couples who have marked an important stage of their relationship, such as civil marriage or civil partnership."
Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell wrote in a joint statement that "it has been a long journey that has led to this moment. For the first time, the Church of England will publicly, unconditionally and joyfully welcome same-sex couples into the church."
They expressed the hope "that today's thoughtful, prayerful debate will mark a new beginning for the Church, when we are looking for a way forward, listening to each other and, above all, to God..."

As a former art student, I have to say, that is some wasted talent. His paintings were pretty good. And I agree with the woman, it's almost like he's glorifying them, pretty ironic.

Meh, he probably traced them from a projector, and then painted them. It's a common way modern "realist" artists get their photo realism. Or the grid method. His talent is not distinct, or hard to come by. He was probably comissioned to do this on behalf of the state.

    • @noaoah3662
      @noaoah3662 Рік тому +6

@@itheuserfirst3186 Well you're right, his paintings aren't that unique and there's no real style or trademark he can call his own but it still takes some measure of talent to paint like that, even if he uses the grid or projector methods. I can't paint like that, and I went to an art school. That's also because painting isn't my thing, but it's still commendable. He could have used his abilities for other content, is my point.

I'm pretty sure the artist was actually counter protesting in his own way and intended to glorify the American soldiers while doing just enough to be able to bullshit a story that would let them hang the art in the wagner group. A sort of banksy-esque counterprotest.

For many years, I’ve been convinced that “Q” actually started as some Russian disinformation campaign that the American crazies took to heart and ran with, further fueled by the GOP regurgitating Kremlin propaganda.
After listening to these braindead fascists, I’m now all the more certain that QAnon began with the Russians - because they’ve clearly managed to brainwash an entire country into believing the most insane sh*t! Kremlin propaganda has had the same power over most Russians as Fox News, et al., have had over American rightwingers. So sad, so pathetic, so terrifying.

I'm from Russia. What is happening is a big problem for us. Society is divided into two parts - those who support the war and those who are against the war. At the same time, for the very word war you can be put in prison. The authorities in Russia call the war a Special Military Operation. There are memories of the USSR among people of the older generation. Therefore, these people do not perceive Ukraine as a separate country from Russia. In their worldview, Ukraine is an artificially created country that should be part of Russia.

You are brainwashed by such "reports". In fact, there are, of course, similar actions in Russia, but they are not ubiquitous. If you had thought a little about the reasons, then perhaps you would have come to an understanding. Do you know the distance from the nearest US military base to Moscow? 800 kilometers! I would look at your face if at least one Russian military base appeared in Cuba, although it is twice as far from Washington. I suppose your crazy grandfather's reaction would have been more aggressive, wouldn't it? Or is it different? Hypocrites.
