The sports and history stuff is a nonissue, yes sports is big but so is our arts community, you're not going to face ramifications for your interests in Philly. You will have some pushback for some political beliefs but that depends heavily on how loud you are about them and what parts of Philly you live. The economic and public education issues are very valid. Most people are under the poverty line, and we are a mid cost of living city, so it's not the highest but it's much higher than a lot of other places. You will find prominent job sectors in construction, government, medical, and higher education---if you are in a field like that you can find good work in Philly. Crime is an issue, infrastructure is an issue, poverty is an issue, drug use is an issue---so general despair is very present in Philly. You'll have to find the pockets of prosperity to enjoy the best of Philadelphia, so if you have some level of money then you will have a different experience here than if you are poorer. The bittersweet thing is the median income of Philly is so low that if you make more $75k without substantial debt you'd qualify as firmly financially sound in Philly. You need money to enjoy Philly, otherwise, it's kind of a shithole.
The taxes go further; looking at it on the state level, such as alcohol or the PLCB would be a good one. The city also is consistently borrowing. I'm sure more can be found locally too. Jobs? Only 4 of the top 20 employers are private businesses. So unless you plan to work for a private, charter or the school district, higher education, the government (any level or positionor), a government contractor, a hospital or any sort of nonprofit, good luck. Even in 2019 entry level jobs with careers that pay the bills are hard to find. Many businesses are based OUTSIDE the city, too, from small and medium sized ones to big ones like Vanguard. Philly isn't called a meds n eds economy for nothing.
