Kortana has a soothing balm voice - which lulls you into a false sense of security as she blasts you out of the air!
unlike violet who sounds straight up like a man takin a huge dump at a truck stop 😂😂
Gotta becareful online just because they sound beautiful doesn’t mean they don’t have a bigger wang than you
I think her reputation more than cancels that out.
🤣
So does Matrix imo!
'Now with added Kortana' - was worth a smile on its own
BTW Cap, IIRC the "generation" of aircrafts that we hear usually is only about jet aircraft. "Generation 1" Fighter (jets) means old subsonic fighter jets such as the MiG-9s, Me-262, P/F-80, Gloster Meteor, Vampire, MiG-15, etc.
That is very informative to those who aren't familiar with the jet generation format. And you're right, propeller planes are not apart of the generation format since they aren't jets.
Rgr thx.
The phantom was proof that with enough engine, even a brick could fly
Actually a “barn door”, at least that’s what aerodynamicists have said!
The triumph of thrust over aerodynamics!
Also Jeremy Clarkson: POWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER! 😎🔥💯
One up on the F-104 given it has wings
The F-4 was also known as “Smokey Joe” due to the J-79’s. In dogfights the pilots were taught to go to minimal burner to kill the smoke and thus reduce their visibility to their opponents.
True, was also done in Germany. They joked that the F-4 (aka "Luftverteidigungsdiesel", air defense diesel) was the only jet in the inventory for which you did NOT need a radar to detect it on a sunny day.
I can confirm, you could see it for miles out. And when the smoke suddenly stopped, you knew they were in burner.
The Tornado, on the other hand, was basically smokeless (and gutless, my buddy said that he sometimes had to keep one hole in blower just to keep up with the tanker, "up high" at 20 to 25kft).
@@daszieher So your buddy had difficulty maintaining 280KIAS in his Tornado at 25,000ft without afterburner? I mean a slow corporate jet can manage that, and perhaps even some late variant single engine piston WWII fighters from both sides!
I find that comment so hard to believe that yet again I'm forced to make an emergency call to my psychologist to discuss my stubbornly persistent and profound ongoing cynicism. I Know, I know, iknow - It's a failing of mine.
I'll go back to my peas and paneer (after the phone call) ...
Perhaps I should tone my chilli intake down a bit too.
@@ThePaulv12 hahaha! I get it! If it had been any random dude (like me) I'd also scoff and push it away as a misunderstanding, but this guy flew the things. he preferred taking fuel from another tornado (buddy-to-buddy tanks).
Depending on stores and total mass, the thrust requirements can be quite high, especially when flying slow. maybe the Tornado would have been more comfortable flying faster. Frankly, I don't know.
He envied the guys flying the RECCE version, as it had stronger variants of the RB-199
One of the things to remember is that during WWII, pilots would strafe ships with guns and rockets to knock out AA crews as they approached. DCS does not model a ship's AA guns getting knocked out or suppressed, so its not entirely accurate.
And most antiship strikes were done with torpedoes.
Actually no, while torpedo attacks were used, level and dive bombing attacks were far more common and effective. Torpedo bombers were slow moving and easy targets for fighters and ship-board AAA. Example, the Battle of Midway. The vast majority of the torpedo bombers sent against the Japanese were shot down, and not one torpede scored a hit. All of the damage was done by the dive bombers.
The Germans used dive & skip bombers (Ju-87’s, He-111’s & Fw-200’s) & guided bombs & missiles (one crippled the Roma & another struck a LST that was carrying mustard gas)…
@@jefforyrichardson9479 That's cherry picking data. Air dropped torpedoes were one of the most effective weapons against shipping in the war. However, that is after the torpedo issues were addressed. Also, the later generations were able to be dropped close to 1000' above sea level at 330mph.
Look up the kill rates of the NightCat PBY Catalinas with night bombing/torpedo raids.
In IL-2 you can knock out the individual guns on a ship.
out of curiosity, has DCS applied Dive and Torpedo bombers in this game? (Also, Skip Bombers? I don't recall ever hearing those. What are they?)
There are some things in DCS that are modeled so good, other things are decent and some are not modeled at all. I believe the best sound in game is the warbird engine sound with the F3 flyby. Damn that sounds so sexy! I was at Oshkosh last year and managed to get some excellent recordings of the P-51D's and it sounds exactly like it does in DCS. I made it my ringtone.
IL-2 fills in there weak areas of DCS and vice versa.
@@grimreapers I must get that. The IL2 videos you guys do are just as interesting and fun as the DCS ones.
@@valuedhumanoid6574 the biggest problem is that for a game featuring rather low flying airplanes, the ground looks really bad. Not just texture wise but alse the complete lack of roads. With even big cities, buildings, cathedrals standing on green fields.
That then got ridiculously obvious with the Tank DLC.
@@5Andysalive Keep in mind that DCS is a COMBAT simulator, not just eye candy for those who just want to fly around doing nothing but admiring the scenery. Yes, the ground and environment is rather basic when comparing to MSFS or X-Plane. But get close to the ground in MSFS and it looks horrible. It looks like the world has been melted then frozen. While DCS is rather basic, it doesn't look like melted plastic. And the scenery is just to give you the impression you're in a real-ish world. The main focus is the cockpit and the system used in combat. The sea, clouds, sky, sun, etc. look fantastic in DCS. So do the airports and many things on the ground. It's just there's only so many ways to arrange the same 12 buildings, and roads are not the high def we want. Even when using the Combined Arms in a tank, the main purpose is combat. Use your imagination to fill in the short comings.
@@grimreapersthe flight models can be very different. The Spitfire IX in DCS is as much of a handful as my cat when she needs a bath but is fairly pleasant in IL-2.
Starting at 22:50 is one of THE best carnage of battle segments I've seen in DCS. Bravo!
This could have been in one of those epic WW2 movies, discounting the fact that the planes are all cold war classics....
I would love to see this with the naval assets keeping tech even with the birds.
We may rerun this at some point against a more modern convoy.
That would be awesome!
@@KortanaDCS Maybe a more accurately modelled convoy would be better, if any models exist. Old school AAA is more entertaining than trying to penetrate SAMs and Phalanx with A2G guns and dumb bombs.
When discussing guided bombs - Had a moment when I thought Kortana's answer to "what are you taking in the mig?" would be "a nuke!" :-)
Need to try the gen 2/3 again if they ever release an A-6..
I wish DCS made the smoke effect a little more realistic
I do enjoy Kortana's missions. I enjoy all the missions but Kortana's are my faves.
Third Gen…. Give me those good ole fashioned jets with gunz and bombs!
Everyone else: “Attacking center left.”
Cap: “I did a thing! Me!”
To help deconflict, could have just a whole bunch of Laser guided bombs on different planes, and one or two JTAC’s lasering the ships so there isn’t wasting bombs on the same ships and user errors of not guiding with their own tpod
Would be cool to see this done again against a Gen 2/3/4 era convoy
Are they gonna do WW1 aircraft vs Schooners of the line?
😉🍻
The FritzX should be great imo
Thank you GR for all the great content . Much love from the USA
Okay that was cinema awesome at 23 minutes.
EDIT: Yeah, that works, new word... Cinemawesome.
I love the F-4 and A-4.
Kortana: snake eye bombs are your friend
zuni rockets and bullpups on the skyhawks would have rendered a vastly different outcome
Zunis would probably have been a much better option for the F-5s, as well.
@@AllTradesGeorge yep
Another great presentation for the sake of science I tell you science.
Waking up to a fresh GR video...Gonna be a good day!
F-4's are also called "Thunder Rhino" or "Rhino".
Nothing like hearing Sonar Pings INSIDE your plane - that’s scary!😂😂
I think doing torpedo runs with the war birds would have been more efficient. Dive bombing takes a lot of practice.
Most pilots would not attack a ship from the side. There is a much greater chance of a hit when they attack from the front or back to have a zone hundreds of feet long to score and hit instead of maybe 100ft. or less when attacking from the side.
Each attack orientation has its advantages. If you're level bombing then the target exposes a greater area from the side - my F-4 first run is an example. In a dive attack the longitudinal orientation gives a greater chance of a hit by allowing a greater fore/aft error and still achieving a hit.
Ju-87 is needed if not for the terrible sound of death from above but for the effectiveness
Cap after the first try:
"...on the plus side, it cost us nothing..."
Classic miscalculation, and the Germans and Japanese had to learn this the hard way in WW2, in fact this attempt cost you the most important resource: 8 good pilots.
Something that might need to be modeled, a bomb detonating close aboard can do significant damage. Plates will buckle resulting in flooding, which will keep damage control very busy.
Fair comment.
Glad to hear you talk about RC, I've missed him.
Kortana is easily your best pilot. I do have to ask though she was absent from quite a few videos reccently and i dont know why happy shes back though missed having her there.
Warbirds just the sounds!! The Mossie in D-day stripes is gorgeous....
I'd like to see this re-run once the Intruder comes out. I think that might make a difference in the Gen 3 category.
For sound lovers, check at 7:15. massive fly-by and no chit-chat. Love it.
No Chat in a GR mission? No possible.
@@grimreapers it didn,t last long. (wink)
I’m surprised nobody in 3rd gen aircraft was using AGM65. I didn’t see any of those until 4th gen went up, but that was literally tons of fun both in HE and shipping!
That was a calculated decision on my part. The AGM-65E (the first variant with the larger warhead) didn't enter service until 1985, well into the Gen 4 era. The smaller warhead versions just don't pack enough punch against ships for them to have been remotely cost effective.
That is some very astute attention to detail I love it! I’m not sure if the AGM 62 walleye can be used by the F4 in game? But that would definitely be a very effective weapon from the third generation aircraft because of the 2000 pound warhead! Either way it was an awesome sim you guys!
Love the videos keep them coming it’s fun seeing y’all do silly things together. This channel has the perfect balance between fun and serious war games
I love how you guys seek an answer to questions I have never asked but really want to know. Great video
Was waiting for "Violet" to ask "What's a plonker?" 06:14
I grew up in St Louis right before they decommissioned he F4 and I remember hearing them take off, it will always have a place in my heart.
Your series on finding the most cost effective loadouts is simply fantastic. The level of detail and thorough analysis you put in is impressive, and makes the content both informative and entertaining to watch. Keep creating great content like this, it's really appreciated
Roger it's Kortana's brainchild TBH.
That ping was very distracting, I was playing Dangerous Waters and that is close to the ping sound you can get.
But NOTHING showed up on the active intercept so I was puzzled as I really wanted to find out who and what was pinging me :P
put and A6 full loaded... it would be so much fun
That was a lot of fun :) I loved watching the shenanigans at the end 😂
What’s great way to end the weekends. Reminds me as a kid watching” Baa baa Black sheep” on Sunday nights, after “Disney”. 🇨🇦 Veteran
Love these series
Love this channel
Ha! You and your team always come up with the most entertaining content.
i should be doing homework rn but this is to interesting
That scene at 23 minutes was awesome... 10/10 would watch again.
Cost effective I'd want to know how A10's would do... I suspect the main gun could take out shipping and they are more survivable than most.
The A-10 would be blow out of the sky with them German 88mm Flak guns
terrible
Didn’t see that intro coming, very halo like! I enjoyed this intro
Would skip bombing not have been a better option with the warbirds?
Agree
@@grimreapers Would be nice to have Tsetse and Highball variants of the Mosquito for this kind of thing.
neat video guys neat thing is four countries are still using f-4 phantom in their air forces. 1 Iran has 62 2 Greece with 18 3 south Korea 27 4 turkey 54
IIUC, the AA fire from the US Navy was quite effective by the end of WWII. So maybe the accuracy of the flak wasn't so badly modelled after all.
Cap, when you asked Cortana what she was carrying on that MIG 21 I was half expecting her to say 3 Nukes! 😊
this is a really fun idea surprisingly
Love these series.... more please! Do a Thing!!!!
That shot at 23:00 is super cool with the shockwave! ua-cam.com/video/w4fhwL9J22A/v-deo.html . Boy, the DCS fire, explosion, splash, etc. effects really are so much better than they used to be. Though, hard to believe that A-4 would have been fragged at that height/speed. I think without those, the Gen 2/3 would have faired much better. Always fun flying with you and great job on the edit there!
Yup, seeing that shockwave was super cool 😎
For the WWII era scenario it would be interesting to run it with the method that was most effective - heavily modified B-25s and A-20s with 10-13 forward firing .50cals skip bombing from just above mast height. This was devastatingly effective against convoys, much more so than dive bombers. Fighters were rarely used from what I've read due to the very problems you encountered in the sim. Fighters were extremely effective at strafing airfields, followed by the same medium bmbers dropping parachute fragmentation bombs. All due to the genius of Pappy Gunn
“[The camera] adds minus ten skill points.” Lol. SuperCap’s Douglas Adams logic.
11:20 Cap, you complained about WW2 bombing being hard, but you nearly had it. You had perfect range, it just dropped as you were off to the side.
So vunerable coming in at just 300mph.
All I’m sayin is that if you made WW2 short films about aircraft strikes, I would watch them.
In the Air Force, we called the F-4 the "Double Ugly." Mostly because it is.
Beautifully ugly
Loved the video @Grim Reapers! Can't wait for the next video man! Gen 4 is an Automatic Win for Any Scenario in My Book, because of How Advanced the Technology is even today. Something like a Simple Convoy with Liberty Ships and LST(2)'s (which would count as a Gen 1 Convoy if anyone want to get Really Technical) is just a Cakewalk.
Can't wait for when DCS has a Massive Expansion of their World War Two Period Equipment, Ships, Vehicles and Aircraft because then you might be able to Play Games like "War on the Sea", "Il-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles" or even "U-Boat" in DCS. Wonder if the Fletcher-class Destroyer Mods been updated yet?
About the Gen-4 attack and radar guided missiles going after the escort subs. Fun fact, the Harpoon anti-ship missile was originally developed as an anti-submarine weapon.
The first generation of Soviet guided missile submarines could not launch their missiles while submerged, the submarines needed to surface for approx 15 - 20 minutes to prepare and launch their missiles, plus the range of those missiles was short enough that the submarines had to be in US coastal waters to use their missiles. A submarine is small enough that most air dropped anti-ship weapons of that time had a low chance of hitting a surfaced submarine, so the Harpoon missile was developed to give patrolling anti-submarine aircraft like the P-3 Orion a weapon that could hit a surfaced submarine.
This is where I'd love to see Matrix in a Buccaneer.. Low level anti-shipping is awesome :D
🤮Very much an acquired taste the Buccaneer. All bakelite, brass and Victorian engineering. Not really my thing. But the guys who flew it loved it, and they were VERY effective.
@grmatrix6358 definitely. Spoken to ex Bucc crews before and they loved low level ops. Sees to be something that Brits do well, is going lower than the trees.
Once again, I thank you for the fun on this fantastic morning all!
RC! Haven't heard from him in what's feels like a year. Tell him we miss him
I actually managed to speak to him recenently!
@@grimreapers awesome I hope he's doing well
I’m only 2 mins into this video and already outraged that matrix’s opinion was debated. The man is a RAF hero. I will report back with my opinion of my opinion in 44 minutes.
My opinion is excellent
lols :)
Is it weird that I am in love with Violet? Good job 👍
By WWII end, I imagine F4U was doing a bit of the bombing-- replacing Helldiver and Dauntless.
If that's her real voice, I think she has a valid claim against Microsoft for stealing her likeness.
Love to see this done right. Come in low, broadside to the ship, and slam the bombs into the side. A-6 and F-111
SIMBAAAAA! SALSA!!!!! yur my favs!
your our favs!
This is true :)
Gen 4 should be the best with 9 laser guided bombs overall.
If the Flak is bad though, gen 2/3 should be better, since you don't need guided weapons and can just drop dumb with ccip/rp
You could've done with some mighty Swordfish for that first run!
if depiction in the latest WWII movie "Midway" is accurate, and i have reasons to believe it is then the GR crews should have tried to go dive bombing straight down like 90degrees
That method only works in proper dive bombers with HUGE air brakes. These slick fighters would over-speed and crash.
Jon here, should have used an A-10
Adding dollar values to everything certainly makes it more fun and interesting to watch 👍
yeah typical american, counting dollars in a war simulation...... hahaha.
The first run of the 1st gens were beatuiful
Warbirds first run is why WW II Germany developed the Fritz X guided glide bomb.
23:00 WOW
It’s a GREAT DAY!
For the WWII test you should use a mix of bombs and torpedo attacks as in real life, this is much more effective because the torpedo forces the convoy to scatter and hence be much less effective in its aa defense; plus aa in WWII was far less effective than as modeled, even slow planes were able to attack heavily defended warships with little losses, only fighters from carriers or from land were an effective defense
Yep, so the issue is a combination of the assets simply not being available, and AAA currently being too accurate. If we had the option to bring the TBM Avenger, SBD Dauntless, or the Ju-87, we definitely would have.
Bravo 👏 👏 👏
This makes me wanna watch Midway 2019 again.
Saying these two birds are extremely similar is not even a matter of speculation. The Mig-29 was literally developed as a response to air superiority fighters like the f-16.
Fun video. Think you should do it again in the future but with the added cost per hour etc of each aircraft. Would change the profits.
Maybe an ignorant question, but did anyone consider skip bombing? That was a technique the Navy and Marines used in the Pacific, coming in flat and fast and literally skipping a bomb across the water into the side of a ship. Kind of a "Dambusters At Sea" style. Seems as if the Mosquito and P-47 might be especially good at that.
Once the F4U module comes out it'll be fun to re-run this using Tiny Tim rockets.
I've been watching these "Eras" lately and I really with DCS has a F104 Thunderchief. I think it would be rather effective on the runways and tanks.
the bomb at 21:14 ricochets off the side of the boat hull 😮
A-4's are "Skooters" or "Heineman's hotrod".
Why do I feel like Kortana brought an A-10 back from Iraq with more holes than a crocheted blanket? She's awesome!!!
Moarr Kortana!!! Yeah!
Gen 4: Clubbing Baby Seals Edition
Hot dog, do I love seeing those warbirds fly. One of the cereals did a WW2 airplane medallion collection when I was little. Wish I still had mine.
In many ways the Warbirds are the most beautiful of all planes.
Agree.
Gen 1 would be different with torpedos…
Cap & Cortana, you forget the German Hs-293 guided glide bomb deployed in late-1943 that was quite effective against allied ships in the Bay of Biscayne & the Mediterranean.
Is that the Fritz? We have one of those at my local museum.
