So Cap... this brought to mind... if a plane with an armed contact bomb(s) were to kamikazi into a ship.. would the bombs go off in the DCS world? ( for extra QI points, my fathers initials were DCS)
Sort of, this is best way I found to test/explain it: ua-cam.com/video/MMTYePWltk8/v-deo.html
@@grimreapers You mention int he video that you tried this with ships and it did not make a difference. How long ago was that, and has DCS changed in that regard since... ;) cheers
Even contacted bombs have an arming cable so that if a bomb were to float up into the aircraft it wouldn’t go off. The bomb has to free fall a few feet away before it will arm. Now that’s not to say that if the bomb were to stay lodged in a burning hull it would go off. But shear impact won’t necessarily set off the bomb. That’s why they do target damage check after a strike to co firm positive hot and good detonation.
@@simba1113 We want big badda boom! ;)
@@grimreapers Hi i just wanna ask how can you get the f-35 mod to work for me and a ton of people it just doesnt work there is just ai flying when we actually select player on mission editor
What is the greatest enemy of The Grim Reapers? The runway. Gets them every time.
🤣🤣
🤣🤣
Runways OP, PLZ NERF!
Gravity...
They run out of Luck...... and ...... Talent! Point stop! Lmmfao!
One of the most interesting things about this incident is that the British actually had radar covering the channel which would ordinarily be able to detect these ships easily. But the Germans did some very clever and sneaky jamming involving several weeks of subtle jamming at the same time of day, leading the Brits to think it was some kind of ionospheric interference. The Operations Room UA-cam channel has a good video on it.
Next on "DCS Questioned", Could a modern Carrier Strike Group equipped with 5th generation technology defeat the joint Spanish and French Armada at the Battle of Trafalgar?
🤣
🤣🤣🤣
Let's make it fair and give Admiral Villeneuva an EMP weapon to knock out their command and control.
Can you stop a Mongolian invasion? Endless possibilities!
The carrier could probably just go around ramming all of the ships.
Prinz Eugen really has a knack for surviving. First the sinking of the Bismarck, then this then Bikini Atoll atomic bomb testing, and finally it hasn't even fully sunk.
I absolutely love these old vs new gen scenerios. So much fun!
agree
I love this video! It shows just how hard it would have been for those WWII pilots to attack a fleet. So much anti-aircraft fire... it's just plain murder.
yup
This pilots had brass ones
@@simba1113 So heavy, it put them in the drink. Or their wings just snapped.
When I was a kid, I got a tour of the Norwegian Naval museum by Nils Owren who was an officer on board KNM Stord during the real battle to sink Scharnhorst. He had some incredible stories of his service during WW2. From Wikipedia: In an interview in The Evening News on 5 January 1944, the commanding officer of HMS Duke of York said: "... the Norwegian destroyer Stord carried out the most daring attack of the whole action..."
12:39 to 12:59 is undoubtedly some of the best simulator/video game footage I've ever seen.
The problem of Brass balls, they seem so heavy, Mosquitos snap their wings. And it even pulls the odd F-35 into the drink.
Also, how cool was the two F-35Bs formating on the Mossie? That was awesome!!
Can't wait for DCS to someday have WW1 aircraft and assets. Better yet, WW1, Korean era and Vietnam era aircraft and ground vehicles. The most complete and comprehensive combat sim ever.
"F-22 WW2"
The F-22 is actually "Air Dominance", as much as stealth; I'd say try them in the Battle of Britain.
I wonder if those bunker busters would completely penetrate the ships and detonate under the keel - might be almost as effective as a magazine detonation.
Just taking a moment to appreciate Simba's piloting I have seen over a few vids now. This landing, the excellent terrain hugging flying in the F22 during the attack on the RUS president plane, the terrain hugging in the A4? In the attack on SAM alley in the Vietnam video (Plus the missile dodging on the same video in the F35). Super flying!
I never really held interest in flight sims before (though I love flying in general) but between Cap and GR crew and GS's channel as well, damm I am tempted to tip some money into DCS and a decent setup!
Me too although I’m figuring it will cost 6k to get in to it.
Once the Germans saw that their ships were getting bombed accurately from high altitude they would start making a smoke screen. They might not know about laser guided bombs but the smoke would ruin the targeting.
24:40 Talk about going out in flames and glory! Lol aka goin out in style😎👍 lol 30:30 same!😎👍
Lmao 32:17 sexy landing and hilarious listening skills!😂😎👍👍
Excellent! Proves that the Germans had a major advantage in this scenario with both naval and ground-based support. The modern planes did manage to sink two of the ships but still had more than expected losses. And, yes, this would have been boring if you’d have stayed at 40,000 ft and dropped your bombs. Once again, great job and very entertaining!
I love you guys. I'm seriously considering getting this and learning to fly, and maybe join y'all. Something I didn't see, and I binged a lot of your what if's is could a wing or squadron of F86F Sabre's stopped the Battle of Britian. I'd love to see you run that scenario, y'all would make that incredibly interesting to watch. You've hooked in a 51 year old MMO/ARPG guy into your world. Love y'all!
A Christmas day relaxing, thank you GR. 🇨🇦 Veteran
I first read ‘The Channel Dash’ at around 10. So, that’s 57 years waiting for this. Thank you.
wow!
Maybe you could have used some F-22s there to cover you from the BF-109s. They could hover above and shot them with missiles.
Hope you all are well. Thank you for these vids - I look forward to them always.
Haven't watched a Grim Reapers video in awhile. This was fun.
Start to end.... that was awsome
There is alot to the channel dash and there is a really good video on it by the operations room if you want to look more into it. the weather was also against us that day. glad you enjoyed my suggestion.
Roger boss
Put it to perspective: up until 90's mutiple 3th gen planes needed to sink a single WW2 battleship with their legacy (1930's) configuration.
While a single 4th gen fighter can SINK multiple WW2 battle ships ALONE.
Possible use for the F35s: German F35s to destroy the dover radar station for their bombers to destroy a close airfield (Battle of Dover).
Showing off... get's you every time ! :)
:(
16:28 looks like a ceremonial flight for the queens birthday 😂
Plenty of fun! Thanks GR
Brilliant, it much take you ages to set these up!
The Eurofighter is such a beauty
”What mark of spitfire is that? Over”
”The swiss cheese one. Over”
Aaah yes, good old Bbbrriumphsbuuttelgghue! 0:52
I really enjoyed watching this, Thanks.
How about another go using arguably the best torpedo bomber of the war, the SM79 Sparviero, or Bristol Beauforts? Swing around from the back with fighter cover up top.
I love that ypu guys know the history of the scenario
Another slam dunk GR! minor issues on damage for the 1K bombs on ships (not your fault), but woot! on the simulation with what was available. Always entertaining....
The missles they carry well out range the AA on that ship
Yeah the big problem with all of these old verses new is that the WW2 people would take time to get over their shock on seeing modern jets and explosions from modern missiles, their pilots would not be used to avoiding anything but planes on their six at guns range (they certainly would not try to notch a missile, they wouldn’t even see it or understand that it was guided) the ships gunners would not be used to how much lead a missile needed even if they saw it, and they would only see it VERY close. I think the reality would be that modern jets would have a much easier time than these re-enactments suggest. Here the olden AI has full knowledge of modern tech and tactics, but there’s nothing Cap can do about that.
@@doemacmonkey Just can't barrel right in... need to stand off as much as possible and avoid any type of dogfights, IMO edit: An AWACS would be a big help!
That Sub Cdr E Esmonde( RIP) DSO, VC push forward not in a modern bomber, but in the venerable string bag!! Such heroic bravery, the fact that the FW 190's and Bf 109's couldn't due to the speed levels showed that flak was king!
the ww2 stuff, the numbers always blow me away
go lengthwise.... be easier for Krauty-crunching
I wonder how a flight of A-10 Warthogs with escorts could do in this
Imagine if they had AA rounds for the 105’s and 120’s on these ships.. 3-4 120’s aimed to various altitudes with flak would’ve been stupidly suicidal to try and fly through..
Considering that WW2 AAs couldn't handle V1 rockets, that were unguided, non-maneuvering, subsonic jet aircraft, even with hundreds of guns being radar guided on a single missile, the chances of any WW2 ships hitting a modern fighter, are basically near zero. DCS needs to take that into consideration.
Film of WWII battleships attacked by planes show the ships jinking hard to port, hard to starboard - does your AI not do this? Because it looked as if they ploughed on straight ahead regardless...lovely targets...
"Aaaghhh, I can't pull out!"
And that my friends, is how GR baby came to be
With 2 capital ships sunk and a heavy cruiser badly damaged on their watch, the luftwaffe had to take their revenge as best they could and poor Arty got to bear the brunt of their anger. That was cool to watch. 👍
Still patiently (well, that’s relative) waiting for the community F-35 mod. It looks so cool. If you’re unaware of what it is, just search here on UA-cam “community F-35A/B/C mod dcs”. This will shit on the VSN F-35 mod, with clickable cockpit, the two massive LCD screens, STOVL capabilities, and more. It’s been in the works for well over two years, hopefully it’ll be worth the wait.
You can use the Raptor to replace the Mosquito raid on Goering's radio speech January 30, 1943.
F-22's could be used in a faulkland island skirmish.
fantastic graphics and s/ware engineering. The attention to detail is amazing.. What hardware are you using guys?
I'm trying to recall a sci-fi story I read many, many years ago. It involved a pilot in an AV-8 Harrier that somehow got sent back (involuntarily) to France in 1916. None of his missiles were any good, the German engines didn't throw off enough heat and there wasn't enough metal to get a good radar lock. His biggest problem (other than the mud) was getting precise enough machining done to replace his gun ammo. Fuel was easy, kerosene through a fine mesh filter to get the crap out of it!
Yeah, jet engines aren't too picky about what they burn, as long as you keep the TIT (turbine inlet temp) in a safe range. Might have to replace the fuel nozzles in the combustors if you run something like gasoline, but kerosene or diesel is close enough to JP8 that the typical jet wouldn't care. You would have to use a winterized diesel blend, though, as it's cold high up and you don't want heavy hydrocarbons freezing out and plugging the fuel filters.
@@drtidrow performance might suffer though.
Viewing WW2 planes flying with modern ones are strangely awesome.
Thanks for the nice video :), just a question: how do you get the models for such weaponry like: Scharnhorst ?
Thanks
Various mods from the modder's discord. Some public some private.
@@grimreapers thanks 😊
Considering recreations and modern attempts at historical events are so enjoyable to watch and by the looks of things participate in, do you think you could do something like this for the sinking of IJN Yamato?
Well we sure hope so let’s see the video
Flying out of RAF Manston? Thats just down the road from me in Ramsgate.
Well spotted :)
@@grimreapers ha, I think you fly over my house at the end.
I just love this
i don't know why
This is the kind of fight I dreamed about as a kid.
Mosquito is certainly not a fan of getting out of a dive, spat their wings rather quickly
Wow just wow.
Lets remember how german sbips were basically unarmed as far as aa goes when you take into account what was the norm a later.
Does DCS have the WWII American naval night fighters? That, or trying to take on the p-61 Black widow, both of them have airborne radar that the stealth might help against
Do it again with max A10s. That would be very entertaining considering they are no faster than the warbirds but much more heavily armed and armored.
Nice to hear you pronounce Gneisenau more correctly than most people ever seem to manage. Shame the Mossies weren't armed with Highball.
This is brilliant, came across your channel by accident, subbed and been watching for 3 day snow. Would love to get involved. Never played DCS, only MFS. Hop emy PC can handle it, looks very demanding. Do you guys have a discord for newbies to the game?
Yup in vid descriptions, enjoy :)
For the F-22 Raptor scenario. Couldn't you see if they could take down the early warning radar on the english coast during the battle of Britain?
You've laid your finger on the salient point, I think. Since the Allies were much farther ahead in radar tech, the only scenarios that stealth tech can help involve them fighting for the Axis powers. Midway, but with the Japanese having F-22s would be very interesting, but if someone could find air combat situations where radar was crucial to the Allied effort, that would be even better.
thx
Maybe you can do an WW2 attack on England with F-22/F-35 because they had radar at that time. Perhappes the stealth capabilities can have some advantage.
It's pretty easy to render it inoperable. Send a JDAM into the control tower.
better than network Telly, thank you
:)
"my wife dose the coffee" I see who wears the pants in the relationship 😂😂
F-22 scenario: since radar tech was more advanced on the allied side, it would be more interesting to have the axis take out a flight of Raptors. What about Pearl Harbor with a flight of "Japanese" Raptors?
rgr
I have a fantastic suggestion! Could a squadron of ME-262 German fighter jets beat an F-18?
We don't have 262 in game yet :(
Honestly, I doubt it - the Hornet is quite a bit faster, with a much better rate of climb as well. Might be more maneuverable too... in any event, the Hornet pilot should be able to dictate the terms of the engagement, especially if he keeps it in the vertical.
Now, if it's a full squadron of 262's vs. a single F-18, that might be more problematic for the Hornet driver.
@@drtidrow I think maybe 6 262s against 1 hornet would be even considering the pack mentality.
@@ultimatewarrior733 F18 would BVR at least 2 262 before they even know its there. An F18 would easily delete 6 262s
Hey cap what do you think about the teasers in ED’s 2022 and beyond video? Most interesting one for me is the teaser for maybe merging the Normandy and channel maps to stretch all the way from London to Paris, that would be incredible
i look forward to being able to low fly over both of those cities
Ooo man I hate to say it but have'nt watched yet, will do when I get back to GR after new years
that AA looks more murderous than the IJN!
agree
What? No Swordfish? Outrageous! lol
It did entertain us ;-)
Gneisenau is pronounced with the letter G being silent. :)
Where the Me-262 at when you need them 😂
I've always wondered from WWII gun camera footage why there were so many air attacks on ships from abeam....the sides VS down the length from front or rear. I understand torpedo attacks most of time are....and skip bombing....but AA protection is many fired to the sides and not from the front or back....and attacks from the sides bring all guns that can train to the side, to bear on an attacker. If I was attacking a "long" target, with guns in particular, I'd want to got straight on, preferably from behind.
Love these time travel Vids!👍👍
Idea for F-22's! Can they stop a full German WW2 Bomber Flight with full Fighter escorts!🙏
Got a Raptor vid coming tomorrow :)
@@grimreapers excellent, can't wait to see what the mission is!😁✌
@@grimreapers Another idea for a F-22 Raptor mission-- WW2 Nuke on Nagasaki or Hiroshima!
@@grimreapers F-22's and F-35's destroy surface to air defense's, radar's, and enemy airplane's!
+GrimReapersAtomic *The original viewer premise could be executable with an early-1990's U. S. Navy Carrier Aircraft Wing, e.g. CarAirWing EIGHT.* Fighting FORTY-ONE on MiGCAP to cut off the _Jagdgeſchwadern_ over the Vichy coast, Fighting EIGHTY-FOUR to take up BARCAP stations against retaliatory strikes. StrkFitRons EIGHTY-ONE to attack from northwest, EIGHTY-SIX from southwest, both on the deck to reduce exposure to target Flak.
*Afterthought:* The U. S. Air Force had a down-the-stack attack method (to blow up the boilers on the battlecruiser and both superdreadnoughts) available via AGM-62 from the Northrop B-2 Alfa, which the defending BFW's were just able to reach in altitude but sans assistance from Wehrmacht surveillance radars - the B-2 was invisible to the radars of 1940. They'd also have to get past the F-14 Alfas of Fighting FORTY-ONE first, as well.
Chappie!
I didn't see binkov making those hypothetical analysis videos yet you got to see it first?
The F-22 could be used for reconnaissance. Radars would never pick up the plane. It would fly past anything it wanted
F22 squadron to perform the Blitz and avoid the chain home radar?
Here's a thought: Buccaneers Vs Tirpitz?
cool
Regarding the F-22 and using it's stealth -- maybe a night op and picking off night fighters while escorting Lancasters?
F-22s would be great for night attacks on Axis strategic targets. Sure, the germans had radar, but they won't be able to see the 22 and it can see at night just fine
Just recorded the F-22 one :)
Could you recreate the Battle of Jutland?
Would the stealth aircraft be better used during a night attack?
For f22, what about a night raid on a factory in Germany, with the objective to not be spotted or picked up on radar?
High altitude bombing is what they'd do though and just stay above AAA or fighter cover.
The F-22 is air superiority. The F-35 is made for roles like AA and AG
A B-2 would do that job much better although stealth in general might not be as useful as we'd expect due to the long wavelength radars that were used in those days. They're useless for precise targeting or guiding a SAM but they might let you know a rough speed and location with enough warning to scramble some fighters. Penetrating German airspace at very high altitude (which the B-2 would be perfect for) should stay above the upper detection range of the radars and ought to be far higher than any fighters or flak could reach.
F-22's on the Dambusters run.
do a deep strike mission with the f-22's have the pernitrate deep inside a zone between radar sites like in the mountains and valley type area.
rgr
20:18 helluva way to land an airplane.
11:45 This is what happens, if a British person does not get to finish his tea before mission. Every single casualty in the RAF history is due to that fact. ALWAYS FINISH YOUR TEA BEFORE MISSION.
100% correct.
Have you guys done a war game on sinking Tirpitz with modern heavy bombers?
Jolly good show old chaps. It's always great fun giving the bally hun a tremendous thrashing. Time for tea and crumpets eh what?
And Cap I'm proud of you for pronouncing Prinz Eugen correctly. Not many seem able.
Does the RAF Have any stand off missiles capable of destroying a ship? I'd like to see missiles launched at distance then you close in to kill the BF-109's.
Yes BUT those missiles aren't properly in the game yet :(
@@grimreapers That's a shame. Oh well, maybe one day.
F-22 raptor scenario idea: Attack the prison complex at Amiens to initiate a jailbreak. Flying under the radar all the way from the coast.
thx
Should've tossed in a couple of B52Hs or B-1Bs, The B-2s might be WAY too much! lol!
