The Matawan Man-Eater | The Inspiration for Jaws
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 чер 2019
- There's no denying that the movie Jaws definitely made some beach-goers scared to go into the water. However, the story that inspired Jaws was what really had people scared to have a day at the beach. The Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916 were so unexpected, sudden, and violent that they stuck in the public's mind even up to the point that the movie hit theaters. The "Matawan man-eater," as the shark was called, took down at least three people before the killings finally stopped, and it forever changed the public's view of sharks.
To be clear, great white shark attacks in the US are not very common. People are more likely to be killed by bees than they are by sharks, and most shark attacks that do happen do not result in death. What happens in the movie Jaws is not typical of shark attacks at all, and how one survives a real shark attack is quite a different story.
For those wondering whether Jaws based on a true story, the Matawan man-eater wasn't the initial inspiration for the 1975 Spielberg film, but the 1916 events did play a part in shaping the tale. The details aren't exactly the same, but there was once a killer shark, and he terrorized the public for nearly two weeks.

Do sharks make you think twice about going in the ocean?
yes
Of course not. I am respectful though. After all, i am in their home
Eh
I saw JAWS when it first came out and I couldn't even swim in a pool much less the ocean....
I 1st saw Jaws as a kid with my brother. The first thing we did was buy a toy shark and go into the ocean

Because they can’t walk, we can swim effectively with scuba gear?
It’s just basic math... they can’t walk we can swim and we choose to go there... and get injured... everyone blames the shark... it’s like shooting an arrow at your knee and you believe it won’t hurt you..
Black African Guy I don’t blame the shark at all. They’re just doing what comes natural. According to science most attacks are mistakes anyways. I personally believe more needs to be done to protect these magnificent creatures.
That's some real privilege talk. I have to dodge their turf to get home. They ate my dog...
If you swim in a pool at night I always feel like sharks are in the pool. It’s creepy

It’s scary as hell swimming in the pitch dark! I was in the Colorado river and Ran out of gas on a jet ski waiting for my dad, ended up floating down half a mile down in the middle of the river from where I had to meet him at the launch ramp. I had to jump in and drag that damn jet ski at night, no other boaters or swimmer just my unlucky behind. It kept spreading from his ankle to the calf, to the shin, knee finally to his thigh, they took the leg off but in doing so it then was in the blood stream. He died aboard an Air lift Helicopter in route to Houston. HIs mother had just left the waiting room to drive the 6 hours to Houston When the call came in... Yes... Somewhere on UA-cam there's a video about a woman who removes fishing hooks from the mouths of sharks. She removed one and apparently the same shark came back with another and the count went up to 300. I found it incredible that they're intelligent enough to bring a friend in pain or irritation and also make sure that they're not going to hurt the woman who is helping them.

Something you left out, JAWS also inspired generations of shark research. Much of what we now know about sharks came about because some people saw the movie and became fascinated by sharks.
Same with the movie Twister , with Tornadoes for me. :)
Keith Dean good point actually, never thought about it that way.
I'm one of those people actually and I dream of working with sharks actually they are amazing creatures that are less deadly than cows. Yeah, just like Hooper in the movie. In the movie Jaws, Hooper mentions that sharks don't normally act violent to people. I think this video exaggerates how the movie portrays sharks
I saw the jaws series when I was around 5 and they’ve been my favorite movies since then because they caused me to become obsessed with sharks and marine research. I even had a shark birthday party when I was 6.

I was raised in that area and members of the Stillwell family still live in keyport. Those stories were part of my childhood even before the movie "Jaws" came out. The real stories were every bit as gruesome as the movie.
Elaborate please....
People spoke about those attacks like they had happened last week. I grew up around keyport in the 60s which is where the Matawan Creek is. It's still weird there. A few years ago a dolphin had swum up into that Creek and in very short order, somebody shot it. When I first got out of the army in the 70s I had a buddy who kept a boat a little further in the bay by Laurence harbour. We had just come back from a tuna trip and we're cleaning the days catch and sliding the head, tails and whatever's into the water. I'm telling ya, a shark stuck his head out of the water and took a whole tuna head that weighed maybe 5-6 lbs one bite in his mouth behind a moving boat. I just got a glimpse of him but it was enough. Maybe six feet between his dorsal fin and tail. That makes about a 10 ft shark. I've seen 8 foot makos hanging on a dock during a shark tournament not far from there. There are some big fish in the ocean and you will find out where you are on the food chain should you find yourself in their cubbard.
We are top of the food chain, that's why we nearly hunted them into extinction. Maybe not in a fist fight, but any other fight, we win.
UrbanOutlawsSk8Co they are still terrrrrrrible
+UrbanOutlawsSk8Co
On land, air, or boat, absolutely. On their turf, however, we're not nearly as high on the food chain. And this planet is made up of A LOT more water than land.
Could we hypothetically hunt sharks to extinction if desired? Yes (Granted, we still don't know exactly how many species exist or their exact numbers), but that would hurt us too.
EVERYTHING in the oceans' ecosystems, however insignificant, is connected. What happens to one species will inevitably affect others. It's in our best interests NOT to tip those scales too far.
If all or even most sharks died, that in turn would impact populations of countless other sea-life, which impacts the oceans, which impacts us. It would be a global chaotic snowball-effect.
Food supplies, animal population spikes, economies, environmental balance, these would all suffer as a result. We couldn't control that. Like it or not, we need sharks. They do NOT need us.
I really like how he clarified that shark attacks are not very common in America, and that you are more likely to be killed by bees. Good job. Thank you for keeping your content real.
But you can still be attacked, and if you are, it will be the worst pain of your life. Legs ripped off. Arteries severed. You’ll be a cripple for life, or dead.
They're not common world wide. Florida actually has had the most shark attacks globally a few years.
We've been getting more along the texas gulf in recent years for some reason
@mckenna mason - Maybe because humans don’t live in the ocean. 🙄
Yeah he probably was forced to say that as well. Because yes they certainly do attack regardless of location. People are drinking the koolaid the scientist are throwing because they don't want to accept the fact that humans are encroaching on their turf and will defend it violently if necessary. Nobody is exempt from being attacked, you sheeple need to wake up or your ignorance will cost your life eventually.

When I was 5 my teenage aunt let me watch Jaws with her and her friends. It completely traumatized me. I wouldn't go into the deep end of a pool by myself until I was at least 10 or 11. To be honest, I still have nightmares about them and I'm 44. The ironic thing is that I love to swim and I love the Ocean. However about 20 years ago I was living in SF and one summer day a guy I was dating and I went to Red Rocks beach, which is a couple miles from Stinson Beach. At one point ( after a few drinks) I went for a swim. It felt great and I didn't stop until I almost ran into a seal. My 1st thought was" Shark bait". I looked back and could barely see the beach. To say I hauled ass would be an understatement. I made it back just fine ( although it pissed off the guy I was with). Later we were driving home and listening to the radio. During the news brief it was said that at least one great white shark was spotted at Stinson that afternoon. I haven't been back in the Ocean since.😂
“Martin, It’s all psychological,
You yell ‘Barracuda’ everyone says ‘Huh?’ ‘What?’.......
You yell ‘SHARK’,....
And we’ve got a panic on our hands for the Fourth of July.”
Well it is true. People don't seem to realise that they could die from a Barracuda. People can get poisoned by the toxins that reef fish pick up but they don't care because there is less than 0.1% of dying from it. I don't get the stigma around sharks
Matt Cecil I think it all comes down to the thought of being eaten alive. Humans like to think that they are at the top of the food chain, so a shark attack upsets their idea of how the world should work.

If you want to garner some sympathy for sharks, tell people how an Orca will flip a shark over and while the shark is helpless and in a catatonic state will start to eat it. Orca's are wolf packs and it's fascinating to watch their various hunting techniques.
But, but, but... Willy
Orcas are remorseless assassins of the ocean. They play with their food before they kill it and even after. They will sometimes hunt it just for fun and terrify it before killing it. Theyve been known to eat deer, elk, sharks, seals, turtles, penguins, fish, squid.. you name it. Theyll wait at a popular migration or watering place towards the coast and just shoot up the beach grabbing more than one in a mouthful before retreating back to the shallows. Or when they have to cross a coastal river mouth, theyll wait for the deer or elk to jump and catch it mid-air then drown it.
But they're also endangered because their reproductive habits are causing inbreeding amongst the pods. Orcas are dying off or dying young because theres just not enough of them due to territorial aggressions. They're a big part of the ocean and while they don't have great table manners, can be remorseless, they are necessary like any apex predator of the deep.
We have a beach near us where, if you go walking after a super-high tide during seal-breeding season, you are almost guaranteed to find half a dozen empty seal-skins washed up on shore. Orca have a crazy way of stunning seals and skinning them in one move, and discard the skins. They also tend to not attack humans--we're not fatty enough. But seeing first-hand evidence of what they can do is insane :/

While painting the shark in a negative light, the movie also spurred the interests of countless people putting ocean ecology at the front of people's minds and making people biologists, outdoorsmen, oceanographers etc. making the movie, book, and incident a net positive for sharks and the ocean.

For me the amazing thing was how far along Matawan Creek the shark went after the attacks. Lake Lefforts, a man-made lake, didn't exist in 1916, and Matawan Creek (a tidal creek and NOT fresh water as claimed by a lot of sources) would run to about 15 feet in depth under Revine Drive. Witnesses state that the shark was seen as far as Marlboro, NJ. After I was born in 1950, my family lived in the left side of the white house next to the creek where it passes under Revine Drive. I moved from the area years ago and understand that the house either burned down or was torn down some number of years ago.

FYI, This real piece of history wasn't the inspiration for JAWS, but was stumbled upon when writing the script for the movie.
Interesting, where have you learned that?
montibella I I listen to a podcast called Fresh Hell. It is historical accounts about murders and death misfortunes. They did a whole episode on the man eater sharks of the 1800s.
*+Rebecca Renee*
Could you please link the episode of the podcast discussing this and (if it's not too much trouble for you) the time stamp where it's discussed?
Keith I'd be happy to!

He did say that in the videozz
I love the very subtle comedy you put into your videos! A lot of the time I can’t help but laugh when watching your videos.
No, this was not the inspiration for Jaws. Peter Benchley said so. “An article on Wednesday and one in the New Jersey section on Sunday about fears over sharks referred incorrectly to the inspiration for the 1974 novel ''Jaws.'' Its author, Peter Benchley, says the book was not inspired by attacks off New Jersey in 1916.”
A version of this article appears in print on Sept. 8, 2001, Section A, Page 2 of the National edition with the headline: Corrections
Don't bother clicking on the link unless you have a subscription to the Times.
@@indy_go_blue6048 Damn. I went ahead and c&pd the very short correction with info on where to read.
I never believed that. It must have inspired him, even subconsciously. I mean, same species (a bull shark wasn't fingered until the 1980s), same locale (Atlantic not far from New York) summertime, mass panic, shark hunt etc.
I think Peter wanted the credit himself hehe.
Fun fact: The shark was most likely a bull shark, they're larger and more aggressive than great white sharks, not to mention they can survive in fresh waters. There's also been a few bull sharks found in creeks and rivers in completely landlocked states. Great vid, btw.
I've read they don't think it was the same shark. Perhaps a bull shark in the river and one or more Great Whites in the open ocean? (Never heard Bull Sharks are larger than the Great Whites however?)
@@kevinbergin9971They aren't, Bull Sharks max out at 4m, though most are 3m, Great Whites reach lengths of 6 to 7m
Maybe the one that attacked in the creek was a bull shark. But it may have been a great white or even tiger shark.
@@kevinbergin9971Not likely. When they killed the one the attacks stopped. Multiple sharks would have continued the killings
So you think it was also a bull shark off the beach in A.C. as well?@@frankdees507
Sharks look like goofy dolphins
Itpcu U bet you won’t say it to their face tho 😂😂
@@keatonwoods60, I would. If I saw a shark, I'd say, “yo, bro, you look like a goofy and high asf dolphin”
Lol, they're like Chevy corvairs with supercharged hemi nitro burning motors and slicks
As someone from Matawan the attack still lingers in fear but it’s our claim to fame
I lived in Matawan when I was a little girl in 1950. All I remember about it was that we lived in an old farmhouse that had rats and was out in the middle of nowhere. I think the rats got their basic training in New York City. Oh, and what do I fear from the ocean? Seasickness! The first ten minutes you think you're going to die. After that, you're praying for death to come take you.
i swim in the ocean most days and so am always half-seeking a close encounter with our neighborhood's family of Sharks - biggest is 5+ feet long, perhaps a Lemon Shark. Jaws definitely intimidated me as a child- hustling to finish a lap in the pool, then turn and look to make sure that no 20-foot Sharks were following me LOL
It's not about which one are more dangerous, it's how you die. Yes they might not be fatal, but when it is, it involves bleeding to death by something underwater, probably alone, with fear of drowning as well. The first scene of jaws had 2 couples swimming at night and yes that was scary af.
The first scene of Jaws starts with a group of people camping out on a beach and one man and woman leave to go swimming but the guy passes out. It ends up being only Chrissy in the water by herself.
im watching this in the waiting room of a chiropractor and the room is decorated in shark wall paper ! lol
One year, during Shark Week, on The Discovery Channel, an NBA player made the point on his social media account that sharks live in the water and we live on land. "So it's not an attack, it is trespassing."
The freshwater creek attacks can only be attributed to a bull shark, unless the creeks were saline. I find it highly likely that the doctor forged the evidence found in the stomach contents of the small great white if indeed the attacks in the boys occurred in fresh water. It was probably multiple sharks though.
I'm from Australia, and I remember when I was about 12 or 13 I had gone boating with my aunty/ uncle and cousins to Fraser Island for the day. We eventually arrived to one of the western beaches of the island for a quick break to set up the fishing lines. I walked across one of the sand dunes to the other side of the beach outlet and I saw a shark clear as day swimming what had to of been a few metres from the shore. I was so intrigued by it cause it was yellow-ish in colour and was a decent size for being this close to shore. It was maybe about 2.5 - 3 metres long and being the stupidly curious fucker I was I decided to walk out to it to have a closer look. I had just stepped in the water, not even a couple metres from it and I heard my aunty calling my name to come back. As soon as I turned around to answer her and look back the shark had disappeared. It's a very dangerous place as there has been multiple crocodile encounters particularly in that area over the last few years. Very odd considering it's all ocean and there's never been any sightings of crocodiles on the island before.
Some things should've gone extinct 65 million years ago that didn't.
@@indy_go_blue6048 I'm pretty sure sharks are older than trees and dinosaurs.
"Youre gonna need a bigger boat"
I live in New England, and the waters are so cold most people believe it's impossible to see sharks up here. And although it's true that shark sightings are super rare, they're not all together impossible.
When I was a teenager I was at a public beach with my siblings, and we were being rowdy by the shore. No deeper that three feet, about a meter. The sand had been kicked up so it was murky and each of us were a pretty good distance from one another. So when I felt something solid and course bumps my leg I got really still knowing it wasn't a person. At this point in my life I wanted to be a marine biology and was coincidentally an avid shark enthusiast. I didn't think it was a shark at first, but the texture was unmistakable.
So I stood their in the water until the dust started to settle and watched until I could clearly start to make out two small sharks with a sort of leopard pattern to them, each between one and two feet in length. I remember the sudden dread in my stomach thinking that I didn't recognize the species, I wasn't familiar with sharks existing in cold shallow waters, and there had never been any reports in the area before. I didn't know if they traveled in pairs, groups, or if they were some of the offspring of a larger species that might be nearby. So, I tried to keep my pulse slow and announced very calmly to my siblings to stop moving and that there were sharks in the water.
Now... I don't know if you know this, but teenagers are not very receptive to calm and caution, or to believing that something like this isn't a joke. The splashing and rowdiness continued as I slowly but calmly backed out of the water repeating that there were at least two small sharks in the water and to evacuate calmly and slowly. They did not.
Once I got to shore I stared on for a few minutes, until finally the panic set in when they'd also gotten some bumps. It wasn't long before they were screaming "SHARK!" And trampling each other to get back to shore.
That was the first and last time I ever saw sharks off our coast. But I'm not an avid beach goer either. All I know is none of us have forgotten that day. I wasn't as afraid for us as I was for the little guys. They seemed like they were just inquisitive babies, but usually more than one friendly bump is shark lingo for "Can I eat this??" So I wasn't going to risk an incident. We ended up having to leave the beach shortly after because our grandparents said we were causing a panic.
I feel like I just watched a documentary not a UA-cam channel 😂
Great video man I’ll drop you a sub!
Fresh water...it had to be a bull shark.
Khattab Ruman Whites don’t swim in fresh water. Bulls do.
It was found out later it was a bull shark.
Kim Whitehead Damn, guess we have another great shark expert here! The water was in lack of better words; saltwater. It was completely possible for the Great White to be swimming through it. In fact, we have tracked Great Whites and monitored them swim through canals and streams and on top of that, the bites didn’t match that of a bull shark. They were akin to a White. Do your research before falling in suit like everyone else and making assumptions.
@@gabriellowe9929 barely ever. And each shark varries. Besides bulls are much more agrresive, as you surely know. Bulls commonly roam fresh waters, especially the females when theyre nearing giving birth. Its veeeery rare for a white to manage in fresh longer than a few minutes. They arent able to close glands to regulate the levels of salt in their bodies. Even if its a salt water creek its still much lower in salt levels, too low for a white to inhabit it so long
I was extremely nervous about going into the ocean. When I went to Myrtle Beach with my family for my sisters cheer competition I was hesitate to go into the water because of the fact that there are sharks there. Once I got in it wasn’t that bad. We stayed at Myrtle Beach for a few days and I managed not to get attacked by a shark.
to be fair, the reason why its more likely to die to bees is because of the amount of time we humans actually spend in ocean compared to land, if you take the shark statistics, if you take the time in to account the shark attack statistics start to look way more scary.
All these years later, Jaws still scares the absolute crap out of me.
Of all my years swimming in the ocean I’ve only had two things cause me to go to a hospital or the life guard tower for ammonia spray. I was boogie boarding with my cousin when we caught a wave and plowed through a whole bunch of jellyfish damn that hurt but not as bad as when a few years later I stepped on a stingray and got stung on the foot if you think a bee sting hurts or a wasp well guess again first thing that happened was my entire leg just stopped working it just went limp then when I finally hobbled to shore that’s when the pain kicked in it felt like someone got an ice pick and heated it up red hot and then began stabbing at my foot and the only thing the hospital was able to do was remove the one inch stinger that broke off in my foot and put my foot in hot water ( at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit also that hurts like hell because your nerves where you got stung are in complete chaos and think that 100 degree water is freaking lava )for four hours plus my foot looked like it lost all blood circulation I’ve been stung twice the last time I got stung on my ankle but luckily it was just a scrape And the only other sea critters I’ve encountered was a seal and a crab that wouldn’t let go of my big toe so yeah shark attacks are rare you have a higher chance Winning the lottery than being eaten alive by a shark
my biggest fear is the ocean. So naturally, I am here. .
I've never heard anyone talk about our past n kept me motivated till the end of video.. Great topics...Now I'm hooked.. Thank u
I remember when I was 12 (back in the 1980s) with my cousins in Noosa QLD, walking out to a sand dune through ankle-deep water, we player cricket on the dune for a couple of hours until the water covered the pitch, unfortunately, that meant the way back to shore was now shoulder deep. As we headed back to shore, which was about 50 meters away, a fin came up out of the water and started heading towards us. Not sure what type of shark it was, only that it was about 4 meters long. I was carrying my 5 year old cousin on my shoulders because it was too deep for him, my other cousins got to shore, but we weren't so lucky. We got attacked, thankfully my little cousin managed to get to shore while I tried to free leg from the shark's mouth, but that was the last that anyone saw me. Got ya.
Yesterday was the 103 Anniversary of the shark attacks of the 1916
And here I thought I buried my fear of sharks long time ago...
Fear of sharks? Wow that’s some rookie stuff... they can’t even come on land and you have fears of them.. it’s us who chose to go to them... and basically get injured... it’s like walking into a mine believing it won’t hurt you
In third grade I read the “I survived the shark attacks of 1916” but I don’t remember much of the story so thank you for making this video and reminding me of a topic I’m so interested in!
Thank you for sharing this 🙏. . Love this story ❤️
The Matawan shark was a Bull Shark. A Great White CANNOT live in freshwater for more than several minutes. It would have died. Period.
Thank you, finally another person to point that out
@chris wilber while your point is valid with many salt water fish, Great Whites are unusually sensitive and will turn back or die quite quickly. It’s one of the main reasons you won’t find one in an aquarium; their extreme propensity to die with extremely minor fluctuations in their water. They are far from a hearty breed in that respect.
Wrong. There are Great Whites that constantly lurk in Jersey waters. Also why were human remains found in a juvenile great white? No bull shark was ever caught
Your wrong.....it was a juvenile Great White. Seriously all you have to do is google it. It says it all over, it was identified by a taxidermist as a White Shark and human remains were found in it's stomach. Not much confusion there!
@@greatestnitemare6626 great whites do not regulate salt water like a bullshark. Great whites usaly only bite on purpose, or misidentification. Bullsharks on the otherhand are the only sharks that can regulate the salt content in its own body, so that means that they can go up river. And they attack EVERYTHING!!!
I went to Hawaii and went shark cage diving. The sharks were super docile and really cool. However back in the dock area there was an aggressive 15 foot tiger shark that hung around to eat whatever was dropped off ships coming in which was also cool
There are no bull sharks in Hawaii...they are a different sort of shark.
I will say my best friend in high school was swimming in waist deep water and her ankle was shredded by a 6ft bull. It required many surgeries but she honestly was more likely to die from the shock than the injury itself. She walks pretty well now but it took a while. The craziest thing was the local news insisted that it was only a "fish attack" so as to not hurt tourism even after a shark expert came and confirmed not just that it was a shark attack but the type and size of shark that attacked her.
Very interesting and well researched. Keep it coming! 👍
Great channel! Keep the videos coming, I'm hooked!
When I was 6 I was in Florida and a shark , a smaller one, circled me and my dad, didn’t bother us and didn’t attack. I was scared senseless at the time but now I have sort of a respect for sharks
A+ video!
LOVE IT! What a unique and memorable history, now Jaws is part of pop culture!
Hey, it's my hometown! For the 100 year anniversary, in 2016, we did shark tours around the town. My art class got to do featured pieces for the town as well, of 1916 matawan buildings. That was fun to participate in. Thanks for shouting us out lol.
I saw the the first Jaws movie and all the sequels. Never new the story was fashioned after real events.
