We use a Dometic PLB40 battery, with a 150w solar panel. The battery plugs into the back of the vehicle, so it charges up when we drive. When we are not driving, the fridge can run for 2 days on battery alone, or pretty much indefinitely with solar.

The iKamper is about 13" tall so in theory it should fit. However, it also depends on if your crossbars or roof rack add any height. Also if you add bigger tires, a lift, or stiffer coils you will increase your height as well.
I’m enjoying your videos, and found them because were planning on doing the same setup: RAV4 and a rooftop tent. Are you guys using factory crossbars or did you get Thule/Yakima/aftermarket crossbars for your roof?
Hey thanks! We decided on going with a platform system instead of just cross-bars. We have the FrontRunner Slimline II rack and we have our rooftop tent, awning, and recovery boards mounted to the rack. So far it has been great. Been using this set up for over a year and we absolutely love it.
@@LunarLanderXplor yeah definitely, and also the sequential led turn signals in the mirrors, are a nice upgrade, most because of the bad light output from the oem ones!
Our fridge is a Dometic CFX50. We power it using a Dometic PLB40 battery, and a solar panel. When we drive the battery recharges and without solar it can run the fridge for 2 days. With solar it can go for much longer, if not indefinitely.
Very nice setup :) Impressive-owned RAV4 and changed for Branco..felt Rav4 is fragile for this kind of stuff. But you made it simple. Lol. One question if you can help me with. Can I put the frontrunner roof rack on factory installed side bars without any opening/drilling etc?
Congrats on the Bronco, they look awesome. We've definitely taken our RAV4 places it was not intended to go, but it has done well. Frontrunner makes racks specific to each vehicle. If there is not one for the bronco, they may have grab-on parts to mount onto existing side rails. You can definitely email them & ask what will work.
This is the one we are using: www.amazon.com/KingCamp-Aluminum-Portable-Collapsible-Supports/dp/B00Q2SK6TE/ref=sr_1_6 The table itself is great. The bag it came with not the best, but overall we have been happy with it!
Love the video, thanks for sharing and all the info. Did you get the stiffest coils they make? (they have different ones), what kind of tires did you upgrage to? did they do the lift upgrades with the tent still on, or did you have to take if off? Thank you :)
Thanks for watching! When we got the Dendoff coils, there was only one stiffness available, so not 100% sure, though pretty sure they are the stiffer option. For tires, we have Falken Wildpeak AT3W in 245/70/17. They did all the upgrades with the tent still installed. We've actually never removed the tent in over 3 years of having it installed lol.
Picking up a 21 RAV4 TRD off-road to camp and bike in the Canadian rockies - what would you say I need to do first? How does the lift affect performance and handling on the road? Love your vid. Cheers!
The lift is a 2.5" spacer lift + some stiffer coils in the rear. Total we gained about 3" because we were losing most of our ground clearance in the rear due to our rooftop tent & gear weighing down the rear end. In terms of what to do first, I would say take the stock RAV4 out on the trails & see what you need first! It really depends on what kind of off-roading & camping you do. For Dijana and I, we were mostly focused on doing easy off road trails to find secluded campsites, so we did the roof rack & roof top tent first. After almost a year with stock suspension we decided the lift was needed next. We are still on the stock TRD wheels / tires, but planning on upgrading to a new set up soon. Cheers!
Oh and the lift has not changed the performance / handling very much at all. Slightly stiffer ride due to the stiffer springs we had installed, but overall it has been worth it to have increased clearance for the trails.
It has been pretty good! Still getting 25-27 on the highway, usually like 22 in the city. It varies mostly depending on how we drive and how fast we accelerate lol.

I thought 5th gen RAV4 roof rack weight limit is 165lbs. How are you able to install ~150lbs rooftop tent plus the weight of two people sleeping in it without issue? Is weight rating on your RAV4 model much higher?
That weight limit is the dynamic limit, meaning what the car is rated to hold on the roof while driving. The static weight limit, which is what the car is rated to hold on the roof while parked, is much higher. No issues with the rooftop tent & 2 people on top of the car.
Hi, I have a rav4 and I’ve been wanting to put on A roof tent but I don’t really know much about what I need, may I ask which type of roof racks you use? Can I put a roof tent on the roof racks that comes with it?
Some rav4 owners have mounted an RTT to the stock cross bars, but you are probably better off mounting to a more solid rack like a Prinsu or Frontrunner. We have a Frontrunner rack.
Some liquid with "cherry" or "apricot" in the name should not be allowed to be called "beer" - greetings from Germany :-) However: Great lift kit, gives decent amount of ground clearance for sure and expands your possibilities. Great video, carry on!

Car camping is typically driving to a camp site, pitching a tent, and sleeping there for a few nights. Overlanding typically involves vehicle-based exploration, usually moving from one spot to another every night. Overlanding vehicles can usually handle more long distance travel, and are designed for more self-sufficiency. For example, we have more first aid supplies, emergency gear, satellite comms, water, and solar power than the typical car camper vehicle. This particular trip (in this video) was not really an overland style trip since we just camped in one spot, but we still use our overlanding gear since that is how our set up was designed. Our other trip videos (see our Utah Overland series) are a better example of overlanding.
The iKamper is a wonderful rooftop tent. Super durable, reliable, fast to set up, and functional. We have camped in high wind, snow, rain, etc and never had any issues. Compared to soft-shell rooftop tents, it will do better in rough conditions.
We generally do "dispersed camping" within public lands (National Forest or Bureau of Land Management land). For public lands, no reservations are needed. However, there are no services like water or trash.
We have the Rough Country 2.5" spacer lift + the RNOFIT/Dendoff stiffer coils. The ride is a bit stiffer, but I really don't mind. The extra clearance has definitely been worth it.
Are you using the included ikamper brackets on your front runner rack? I like how low it’s sitting on the platform (compared to lifted up high when using the quick release brackets) but I haven’t seen definitive info on whether the ikamper brackets will fit around front runner bars and whether the outside “lip” of the platform interferes with the mounting. Thanks for any info!
To mount the iKamper we used the FrontRunner Tent Mount Kit. They have 2 different heights, and we used the shorter one to keep it flush on top of the rack: www.frontrunneroutfitters.com/en/us/front-runner-tent-mount-kit.html
Thank you!! The lift set up is a combination of a 2.5" Rough Country spacer lift + DENDOFF stiffer rear coils. It has been great for us, with no issues.
Thank you! Yes we definitely try to integrate cooking as part of most of our camping videos. We added a Frontrunner Slimline II rack to our RAV4 roof to mount the iKamper, awning, and recovery boards.
This is the exact kind of thing I’d love to do in my life. Thoroughly enjoyed this video I’m definitely going to check out your channel. Did you have to get a permit to camp there?
Thanks!! We usually camp in public land areas, generally National Forests or BLM (bureau of land management). Within National Forests, there are forest roads that can be accessed by the public, and in most cases dispersed camping is allowed. Always good to check specific regulations for the areas you plan to explore. Once we pick an area, we use Google Maps to map out a few potential routes & then go explore and camp!
I have been trying to find out how much the roof of the RAV4 can hold. Message boards say up to 500 or so lbs when at rest. Toyota dealers don’t seem to know the answer and just say the max is 176lbs per the owners manual, regardless of driving or at rest. Do you have any info or verbiage on this that says otherwise?
Not 100% sure, though we have had our rooftop tent for a few years now and it has been wonderful. No issues, though we do have a FrontRunner rack that it is mounted to, that is capable of holding 600+ lbs. The roof itself does not seem to have any issues with the weight of the tent & us two people in it. The 176lbs is definitely at rest, as there are a ton of RAV4 owners with rooftop tents and no one has had any issues that I am aware of (even on stock crossbars, though I would recommend aftermarket platform rack instead)
It would probably fit, but will hang over past the roof rack and will definitely look weird. I think the mini is the right size for the RAV4. Full size looks great on a 4runner
I live in Africa. First thing I did was changed the 19” wheels to 17”. Those 19 inches might work well in the smooth roads of rural US but are useless here in Africa.
We are currently on the 18" wheels that came with the TRD RAV4 (not 19"). The TRD also came with AT tires which have been pretty good for the past year. We are going to upgrade to larger tires and smaller wheels soon, but the stock TRD set up has been great so far.

@@LunarLanderXplor thanks for the explanation, wasn’t sure!
what is your overall opinion on the iKamper? How would it hold up in wind? Rain? Snow? Thanks! love the videos!
The iKamper is a wonderful rooftop tent. Super durable, reliable, fast to set up, and functional. We have camped in high wind, snow, rain, etc and never had any issues. Compared to soft-shell rooftop tents, it will do better in rough conditions.
How do you guys go about camping overnight, do you need to make reservations at all
We generally do "dispersed camping" within public lands (National Forest or Bureau of Land Management land). For public lands, no reservations are needed. However, there are no services like water or trash.
What lift kit are you running besides the rear spring? How’s the ride?
We have the Rough Country 2.5" spacer lift + the RNOFIT/Dendoff stiffer coils. The ride is a bit stiffer, but I really don't mind. The extra clearance has definitely been worth it.
Cool
thanks 😎
@@LunarLanderXplor thank you, that’s helpful!
Such a sick drive up! To top it off with great food too, doesn't get any better. What's the lift you put on your RAV4?
Thank you!! The lift set up is a combination of a 2.5" Rough Country spacer lift + DENDOFF stiffer rear coils. It has been great for us, with no issues.
Do you also experience low speed vibration from lift?
Nope, no issues with the lift & bigger tires!
Just worse MPGs lol 😆
Awesome! Where is this site?
Thanks! This is in Williams Hill Recreation Area in California.
Deanna should start a cooking channel! Did you fix the ikamper directly to the RAV4’s roof rack
Thank you! Yes we definitely try to integrate cooking as part of most of our camping videos. We added a Frontrunner Slimline II rack to our RAV4 roof to mount the iKamper, awning, and recovery boards.
Good~~~^^
Thanks :)
Good video! Food looked delicious 👌🏽
Good camping food is what its all about! Thank you!
This is the exact kind of thing I’d love to do in my life. Thoroughly enjoyed this video I’m definitely going to check out your channel. Did you have to get a permit to camp there?
Thanks! We did not need a permit as we were on public land where dispersed camping is allowed.
How much does a 2” (or similar) lift cost having it done professionally?
For parts and labor about $1200
Nice videos and channel! Where do you find all these awesome places?
Hey! which song is playing during the coffee shots?
I am not sure lol, we get a lot of our music for videos from artlist.io/
Thanks for the info!
Great question, i was wondering the same thing for a few reasons, i weigh 240 and worried about weight capacity but really want a RTT
Do you have the skycamp 3.0 or the mini?
We have the skycamp mini 2.0
@@LunarLanderXplor Thanks for replying. Your videos are great. Would the 4 person fit on the Rav4?
What’s your mpg looking like with the lift?
Around 25MPG normally. Really depends how we drive. The rooftop tent also impacts efficiency.
Is this the lunar color...looks kinda green.
Nice setup
This is lunar rock! It is a greenish gray. Looks great in real life 👌
Where did you’ get the Tent?😱
This is the iKamper Skycamp Mini, which we purchased from Rhino Adventure Gear.
Where is this campsite
Its not really a campsite. We just dispersed camped in the Williams Hill Recreation Area in NorCal.
What fridge is this?
This is the Dometic CFX50. They now have a newer range of models that are slightly different looking.
❤
😄
How many lb allowed to load in rav4
You can load about 1k lbs in the RAV4
Is your wife Mexican? Those tortillas look familiar to me jaja, and i love your videos, really inspire me to get something like yours!! Congrats!
She is not Mexican, but she is a great cook & loves to cook foods from all over the world! Thanks for watching our videos! Glad you have enjoyed them :)
I would be concerned about high winds.
Yea high winds are a concern for any type of camping. Our rooftop tent has a hardshell on one side so you can position that toward oncoming wind if needed. We've camped in fairly high winds without any issues.
Where is this location ?
This is Williams Hill Recreation Area in Central CA.
#subscribed is your rav a hybrid???
Thanks!! Ours is the TRD offroad model.
Kriek is not a beer per se ;)
Whatever it is, its delicious :)
Didnt know the roof can handle sleeping on it.
It sure can! Rooftop tents are becoming very popular, and most SUVs can support a rooftop tent (with the right cross bars or platform rack).
Which lift kit are you using?
We have the Rough Country 2.5" spacer lift & some stiffer rear coils that are from rnofitfabrication.com/
she is from western Europe!
Eastern Europe ;)
Great video. But please don’t use a sharp knife to slice avocado. All you need is a butter knife or spoon. Be safe especially when far from medical service.
We are well prepared for any medical emergency, but thanks for the tip
Those boxes you can get at the Chinese shops for next to nothing
Probably true, but we like to support our local businesses.
The original BLM, I thought it was funny you had to explain it.
Did not want to cause any confusion
Why? Why? Why the obnoxious intro music. Great clip thought-provoking
;)
