Overlanding New Mexico’s Largest Wilderness in my new Rav4

  • This is the best overlanding in New Mexico hands down. The gila national forest has some of the most epic roads in the state, crossing through canyons and mountain passes, crossing streams and rivers, we finally make the whole gap. A route that’s been in the making for a long time. Accompanied by a land cruiser, two tacomas and a K5, I’m able to test the off-roading capabilities of my new rav4 adventure.

I had a Rav4 about 8-9 years ago. I understand the logic of why you got it, but it won't stay nice for long out on those trails. Leave the new Toyota-berry for your new job, and wheel with your older one or the Tundra... LOL Thanks for having us along and keep up the great vids!

Oh yeah, not hitting any trails like that again for a while. I was anticipating the majority of the road to be pretty easy going. Didn’t really estimate road conditions after the snow melt off!

I took my Hybrid 2019 Rav4 out after getting it and I was fairly impressed, for what it is. Curious how it peforms vs the gas model with the rear electric motors. Nice part about that is instant torque at the rear. Trail mode basically tells rear motors to put more work in. there's no snow or rock/mud mode, just trail and the normal ones like sport/eco.
Did you manage to lay flat sleeping in the back? I had to put a lot of blankets/air matress etc and remove the bench seat to accomplish that recently.

I’m just an old man that spent way too many years working and am trying to make the overlanding learning curve less steep. Could you do a video on basic load outs you use for your trips? Any 4R is going to make a highly capable rig and yes there are loads of aftermarket parts, surpringly there is a good amount for the ravs too. Depends on what you’re looking for a trails you’re after. The first gen rav is only so capable but it will keep up. 4R are about as versatile as they come.

Going to put a Rival under engine skid pate on and eventually an Ironman 4x4 lift. I still need to make it somewhere to test its limits but so far its been great. Remember that picking up dog waste is crucial everywhere. State and federal laws require dog owners to clean up after their pets. Dog waste contains excess nutrients and can spread diseases to wildlife and contaminate water. Be a responsible pet owner and help protect our natural spaces! 🌿🐾
