3 Basic Types of Video Projection Mapping

  • Video projection mapping is the basic foundation of video art. Projection mapping is the correction of an image for the surface it is projected on. This might be a simple keystone correction or a complex adaption for architecture using 3D-scans and specialised software.
    That being said: It's not the art itself. Videomapping is just how you project your content. In this "sort of" tutorial I show You some types of mapping and how to do them.
    This is more of a behind the scenes than a tutorial to 3D projection mapping.
    Don't get stuck in technical mapping, instead go out there, create great content and amaze Your audience with a story!
    If You like this projection mapping tutorial then maybe look at the rest of this channel. This channel is all about projections for stage, projections for theatre and projections for video installations.
    And if Your area of activity are clubs and events then drop me a line. I will try to do more tutorials for VJs or people who like to use projections in different Ambiente.
    And if You feel that my videos have helped You and You want to buy me a coffee, feel free to do so at paypal.me/philipp7pc

    Hello, really creative tutorial. I really like it. I am wondering if you have played with spherical projection? I am working on it. The situation is we only have one projector vertically under the peak of semi-spherical screen. And we want to project our footage onto the screen without much deformation. The audience will be seating in the sphere. But We don't know hot to calculate the original footage? Do you have any suggestions or recommendations? Thanks a lot.

      Thanks for watching! It sounds tricky what You are planning. Keep me updated about the process. Sounds very interesting. I know that the university in Potsdam is experimenting with dome projections. And maybe the orb plugin by videocopilot allows such a distortion. But it feels like the real problem ist the creation of the footage - i would go mad trying to wrap my head around it. If You are using a 360 camera like the insta360 it might be an easier approach.

    Great video. One question for you. at 2:25 you measured your "surface"(box) so you are able to create your footage. How did you convert the measurement in inches to pixels(200px X 600px)?

    • @philipp7pc
      @philipp7pc  5 років тому

      Hi, thanks for watching. For me there are two important things to find out: the pure relation (i.e. 1:3) and then the number of pixels I need to on one hand not exceede my render times too much but also not get blurry because I created content with too few pixel of resolution. In this case 600 pixels seemed the most pixels that I could fit into the projected area. You might want to be on the save side. So if an object's hight is covered by half the pixels in an HD projection that's 1080/2 pixels, have some optical headroom, and go for around 120% of that. so some 700 to 800 pixels. Every pixel more is a waste of time rendering.
      But remember: If Your projection system requires "official" file formats, You might have to look up, how many pixels the specifications order. (Might be something odd like 1024 by 768 or so.

  • @HarveyMoon
    @HarveyMoon 4 роки тому

    wow, I really didn't think people still did it this way. Props on doing the hard way, thats a lot of work, and you have to render it out fixed too! How do you even do this with multiple projectors?

    • @philipp7pc
      @philipp7pc  4 роки тому

      ;]
      Well, it’s a mix of two things. One is that many venues still don’t own systems that are capable of real time 3D mapping.
      And the other is the money. If You do this as a small theatre or on your own (which I think the majority of the viewers are) then owning after effects for creation might have eaten up the budget already. (The rest hopefully went into a potent projector.)

      @@philipp7pc It just so much extra work though! Why not use MadMapper or Touchdesigner. There are lots of tools that work better for this task and are made specifically for projection mapping. Why teach everyone a harder + older way. If you are really interested in "3D" projection mapping. AE is the wrong way to get into it. In my opinion, (sorry if you're offended) seems like everyone else likes your tutorial tho!
      I feel It's like teaching people to make a spreadsheet in MS Paint. Can you do it, sure, but just don't.

      @@HarveyMoon Hey! Sorry, I should check the "held for revision" tab more often. Your comment was blocked due to the link. (Good listing by the way)
      I absolutely agree that dedicated video servers or mapping software is the best way to map your content.
      In the above video I mainly concentrated on the pure mathematical or physical aspect of mapping. AfterEffects was only used to simulate what most of the many many pieces of software out there do.
      Using PandorasBox, Pixera, Hippo, D3 or even a complicated environment like touchdesigner is definitely the way to go. But first one has to understand the general concept of mapping.
      I figured that taking the long way might explain this concept a bit better. But if You like, there are some vids on this channel where I look at software packages that do the trick and I plan to do more clips featuring those programs.
      So no offence taken. ;]

    Hello, thank you for your videos, I'm starting to learn video projection by myself and they are very helpful! If you have the time and know the answer I have a few questions: To make a body mapping (I'm looking forward to make body art with projections) is there a specific software? Do you know the best way to do it? And for mapping buildings and objects to put videos and animation on it what is the best software as well? After effects or mapping software? (with these last one I find it hard to create animations and to insert existing videos). If you have any tips for theses questions I'll be glad to hear it! Thank you :) - I work as an editor and visual arts.

    • @philipp7pc
      @philipp7pc  4 роки тому

      Hi! And thanks for watching! As bodies most times kind of move around they are a bit more complicated to map. There are ready made systems that capture the body, like pmd-art.de/en/ or - if its a smaller scale - you could dive into using a kinect and a program like touch designer.
      On the back end as a media server I usually use mapping software like Pandoras Box, D3 or lately touch designer (if it needs to be "interactive").

      Yes, the small little thing is a Philips Piko projector with a laser led mix, In fact any projector is fine if You're starting out. But I would recommend a resolution of minimum 720p (it's just more fun to see less pixels) and some solid state lamp like laser or LED or a hybrid laser/led. Because knowing the prizes of classical lamps you will not turn it on and practice as much as you would if lamp hours don't matter.

    Hello Philipp, what is the minimum spec video projector for a medium to big size room video mapping ?

    • @philipp7pc
      @philipp7pc  5 років тому

      That hugely depends on several factors (firstly: how big is medium size).
      Lumens: they say five times the illumination of the general space. So if you have 100 lux on that wall you’ll need 500 Lux x m2 as light. (3x5m = 15m2, 15x500=7500 lumens for the projector.
      And then You don’t want Your audience to see individual pixels. In this cast perhaps less then 1/4 inch. So 1000 Pixels wide minimum.
      Now just adapt these thoughts to Your case ...

    • @philipp7pc
      @philipp7pc  5 років тому +1

      Hi! And thanks for watching! The brightness of the projector hugely depends on the size of the projected area and the ambient light. There is an old DIN that states that for good readability a projection should be 5 times as bright as the ambient light. So if You have around 300 lux on Your surface from the surrounding light You should ad a projection light of 1500 lux ... This number times the square meters of Your projected area is the Lumens (lux per square meter) that Your projector should have. In my case the projection was 2 square meters big which would have needed a 3000 Lumen projector. The projector I was using was far smaller (500) so I could only show bright high contrast lines.
      Given you turn the lights down a lot s you end up with max 100 lux on Your surface, and the projected area (all the area that is covered by the projector) is let's say 4 meters high and 7 Meters wide (so it's 28 square meters) the projector should be 5 x 100lux x 28squaremeters = 14.000 Lumens.
      At least I hope that's where we should end up with. My maths teacher never was too happy with me.
      The images from the bigger mapping at the end of the clip are from a 38 by 14 meter skate park using 5 31K projectors. So ... a little bigger than that thing in the studio.

      It's a difficult question You're asking. But regarding the nature of a car with any short throw projector You will soon get into tangential areas at the sides. So the further You are away, the more You can also cover the sides. It's pretty much the opposite of what you would want with a concave object (like the bowl) as long as you want to fill it. The easiest is to use an eye, get close, see how much You see of the edges. Go further away, see how much more of the sides You can see (i.e. map).
      So it would be best to use narrower projectors from further away if you are not using many projectors and point them to every surface/side.
      That is, if I got Your question right.

      Hi! Thanks for watching.
      I appreciate the question as it kind of hits the nerve of a very conflict rich project.
      You could use the model if it was exactly the same as the original. If it isn't you shouldn't. Instead you could try to photoscan the park.
      Who's asking You to map a skate park? This sounds awfully familiar.

      Suppose i project a cube photo onto a cylindrical pillar. So at the center of that pillar cube looks fine but if i move it to left or right of pillar then it will definitely change it's shape. So how to solve this so that it would look like it's floating in front of that pillar?

    • @philipp7pc
      @philipp7pc  5 років тому +1

      That’s tricky. You can try to make it look straight, but the trick will only be good from one point of view. As soon as You move Your head, You’ll See that is an illusion.
      But I put this on my list. It seems to me as there is a need for a more in depth explanation.

    • @philipp7pc
      @philipp7pc  5 років тому +1

      Hi! Well, I love cooking, but Cake mapping isn't my field of expertise so much. However through YT I came over a dedicated channel on cake mapping ua-cam.com/channels/yP40zKjYCECMkd3IKpyUSw.html
      They also have a corner on their site lumabakery.com where they consult on software to use.
      But if You wanted to generally learn how to map on cylinder forms it should be pretty easy depending on the software You are using. On a mac I would always first go using motion. It's cheap and versatile.

    Oh.. and about your ratio.. I open a picture and resize it with the ratio found ..?

    • @philipp7pc
      @philipp7pc  5 років тому +1

      The ratio depends on the ratio in Your real life object. Many time I see people explaining mapping using a 16:9 image and then they squeeze it on a square plate. That's not a nice thing to look at.
      Measure the ratio of Your object and then create footage that has this ratio (think of it as of wall paper). So if Your object is 1m wider and 4m tall the footage You create (and later projection map) should also be at this 1:4 ratio, but using enough resolution to not suffer when projecting. So as a rule of thumb the hight pr width of Your projectors resolution should determine the longest side of Your footage. I our example if You have a full HD projector (1080 pixels high) Your footage should be (according to the object) 1080 pixels high and ... well a 1/4 of this wide...270pixels ? (If it feels too few pixels give it some more as a kind of headroom, but mostly that works fine).

      Thanks for watching! Well, first I would highly recommend ua-cam.com/video/4wVNzwr77NY/v-deo.html as a rough tut.Than with all pranks: Take care nobody gets hurt physically or mentally. And then: If You have (legally obtained) access to the home try to find a space like a cupboard or closet to hide the projector on top and turn on some music to hide the sound of the projector. And keep looking for curtains and other semi transparent materials to use as a projection surface. And the most important tip: Put a camera up to post the result and reactions to the internet. ;] (All compliant with local laws of course.)

      There are basically two areas - creating the content in some compositing or editing software like After Effects, Apple Motion ... and then the media servers that one would use to present the contend. Both can achieve a mapping of some kind. But media servers like Pixera, Pandora’s Box or D3 are the better (quicker) choice.
