- Are holographic projections a thing? How are they done - if they even exist?
The holographic projection of a 3D body on stage (or in a cave in a far away universe) is nothing that can be achieved with ordinary video projectors and the means of classical theatre. But there is an agreement between audience and creator that an elaborate arrangement of layers on stage and a convincing 3D like lit projected content could be accepted as a „hologram“.

For a play in my school I thought of trying something simelar in cheap and small - if possible. It would be an experiment. :D
Maybe you could give me some advice: During the play smartphone videos (which the actors watch at some points) should be displayed as a hologramm instead of a basic projection, visible for the audience. That would allows us to play out the videos integrated in a cool way, without needing a disturbing screen next to the stage.
I thought of using basic Tüll to keep the costs at a minimum. Do you think that could work for us and what color(black/white) would recommend?
Just wanted to ask you as an expert, whether that might be too ambitious before spending time and money. Thanks a lot. :)

Sounds like a very cool idea to have this kind of footage appearing in a less "flat" manor.
It highly depends on the lighting. No light should touch the Tüll. Otherwise you see it and the illusion is void. So, the Tüll in the front, actors behind lit from the sides and then the projection (if possible the projector shoots either from very low or from the sides so it doesn't light the actors too much. Or very high, touching the ground.) But playing around with the lights You'll find a good mixture.
The color depends highly on the strength of the projector. Of course a black Tüll will not pick up too much ambient light and thus remain "invisible". But a less strong projector might benefit from a brighter Tüll.
Often the best solution is a grey Tüll - a compromise between visibility and projection strength.
If the Audience is very close, a Feintüll (like this one www.gerriets.com/at/figaro-feintuell) is great. If the stage and the projected surface is larger a classic pee tulle (www.gerriets.com/at/parsifal-erbstuell) or Gobelin Tüll (www.gerriets.com/at/gobelintuell) looks more graphical and has a stronger contrast.
Those links lead You to Gerriets. There are many more manufacturers. But I like to work with Gerriets a lot. I'm not being payed to promote their stuff. But my opinion is highly biased.

Sadly I doubt that our school is willing to fund the Tüll you recomended. It's just too expensive. Maybe we try to use normal Tüll (acctually used for clothes) which is a lot cheaper but probably not good enough.

I am exhibiting a video art work and wanna use for that the pepper ghost effect . have been searching for a long time for a glass (106x125 cm) which don t reflect two images and is payable. just failed to find something. I found that construction netting is the cheapest option at £30 for 3m x 50m although trampoline knit mesh light is more like what you're showing but that's £13 a meter

It’s kind of glossy. So keep that in mind.
Tüll by the way isn’t that expensive. But of course also not that cheap.

Black might pick up too little light to really cover the actions behind. While white might pick up too much light from the ambient and destroys the illusion. I like grey.
And then it hugely depends on the material and how much it covers. Gobelin Tulle might be best.

Dale Foulser Thanks for watching. The tulles I'm using here are not that expensive (depends on the car). If you don't exceed a certain size the unconfectioned material is pretty ok in prize.

Your video has inspired me to create my first holographic dance theatre storytelling show. I have been scouring your work and trying to understand how this style of holography works and I wanted to ask, how do I create a holograph that is essentially an outline of my body that I dance with? I want to know if the actual holograph can be something like electrical impulses as opposed to trying to recreate an exact mirror image copy of myself? any help will be greatly appreciated.
I just wanted to also know what sort've equipment I should look into purchasing :)
If you plan to do this live an infra red camera and touchdesigner would be my first choice to buy.
The image can be anything that only uses parts of the canvas. Lines and curves are certainly fine.

I came to the Channel with the Intensive trying to figure out, For the Love of it, how to maybe project a tornado on stage for The Wizard of Oz using holographs. The shot though that you did with the fog and the material and the image almost looked like it was a real storm on stage. I would love to see how to explore that more

Well, there are not too many places to learn mapping. Either YT or maybe enroll at the Düsseldorf University of applied sciences (HSD) where I'm teaching at the moment.
Also im planning to offer more knowledge and 1-0-1 on some platform. (Recommendations are welcome. )

If we use the scrim and the audience is “in the round,” Would it work as a double hologram, both in front and behind with a projector in front and behind the screen?

Nope. But I'm open to all new technologies if someone can provide me with a person who wants to explain and answer questions. It looks a bit similar to the early 3D screens we saw at FMX 2008

Very good but please asign more time to objects and content than yourself in your videos! You said for example this is camera, this is miror, surface! Projector! Only in 2-3 seconds! Didn't stop on them! Very fast! Then you filmm8ng yourself in almost 80-90% of your videos! Thank you for your work anyway.

@@philipp7pc was simply looking to see a clear example of projecting onto a transparent screen and where to source such screens. Saw an example in person many years ago in a tapas bar in Atlanta. Never paid a lot of attention to it, but remember it looking very cool. It seemed to have been a simple ball chain curtain. Now I have a need to get more details and can't find a clear example online. Everything I've seen online is vague and from entities that seem to be startups. Rosebrand & Shimmerscreen are the closest I've come to sources. Working with a very small budget and not looking to break the bank. Thx

Right now I'm working on a piece about Voile and "holographic" illusions using it.
