This video addresses an often overlooked key point. Lose “fat” not lose “weight.” Therefore, how do we drop body fat without dropping muscle mass? I’ll explain.
@@Fitafterfifthy I do a lot of weight lifting to rebuild muscles and, it works very well. From what I notice at the gym is that older people don’t push/pull heavy enough to build muscles. They move weights but it must be to failure
I'm glad you included healthy carbs in your diet plan. Most people can still lose fat and gain muscle with carbs in their diet. The key is to cut back on unhealthy carbs like ultra processed and high sugar foods (potato chips, cookies, soda pop, beer, etc.). I got into a bad habit of coming home from work everyday tired and stressed and immediately grabbing a bag of chips and a beer out of the fridge to decompress. Say the combination of the beer and the chips is 200 calories, I cut 1,000 calories a week out of my diet by no longer doing that. Instead of a beer a day, now maybe it is a beer a month if I go out to eat with a friend or family member. I still eat oatmeal, high fiber cold cereals, whole wheat bread, brown rice, potatoes, fruits, etc., and have been able to lose fat by combining long daily walks and some resistance exercise.
Superb video! Just wanted to say I am 80 and started with around 30 % body fat OVER a year ago I also needed to keep muscle mass because of medication I was taking for cancer. After 15 months I have improved my muscles development, physically I can see the difference and I now have a habit of training everyday. Who would have thought that I would ever see my upper six pack at my age. This site has really helped me and my dogs are in superb shape hiking everyday with me and really taught me ay my age how to do resistance training. Thanks!
45 here. Have been physically fit most of my life, but the last year. Starting my journey back now at 33% bf and am coming up on my first month of resistance training. Going to start tracking nutrition next week. Good video. Thank you
Right on the money. My fat is all around the gut, and glutes. I'm 176 right now. I've lost roughly 9 pounds since the week before Thansksgiving. My goal is to lose another 11 pounds; however, I don't expect to lose this in two months. This part will take much longer, and I know it. Work will get in the way once again. There are those of us, even in our later years who require a lot of work to see results; I'm one of them. 40 minutes on the elliptical is how I start just about every workout, and then go into resistance training. Personally 15 - 20% body fat is probably optimal for most men.
It took me about two years to get from 96kg to 77kg and that includes increased muscle when i was 42-43.. then injuries set in, motorcycle accident and a partial thickness tear in my with shoulder labrum.. oh the pain. I'm 48 now and stick on 84kg long term. I only do a bit of training but i watch my diet and walk a lot
Good info thanks. For me personally if I drop fat intake and increase carbs the fat just falls off me. If in calorie deficit of course. For me I think anything under 20% for over 50’s is good 🇺🇸 🇳🇿
I would recommend a DEXA scan (X-ray) which should cost $100 to $200 and the recommended callipers. The DEXA gives you the correct number and them learn to properly use the callipers to match the DEXA. Confirm with a DEXA every 2 to 3 years.
I am 62 and workout hard (weight lifting and cardio) 6 days/wk. I start with 1g protein /lb of lean body mass, then fill in the rest with whatever carbs and fat to make up my total daily calorie target.
Think I'll stick to #carnivore because it works. On keto I was still looking like the Michelin Man. Now, I'm hovering btwn 5% - 8% bodyfat. Lost 67lbs from 217lbs in 4 months then, 5 yrs later went carnivore and lost another 20lbs in 2 weeks. Never felt more alive.
Im going back on carnivore the first of the year. Now even in a deficit i eat carbs and blow up like a balloon and feel like a fat pig. Even at the same weight on carnivore i feel lighter
@@GroundScrape Exactly. Our bodies have adapted and have been running so clean that even one serving of any carbs or sugar makes me feel like I have a hang over the next day. Sugar? My head instantly starts pounding.
Im only 33 but as of yet the body fat that I feel the best is around 15% if i get any lower than 10% it starts to get difficult to maintain and i just dont like being that small. Also i still feel fine at up to 20% i just have a noticably different apperance between 15 to 20 percent body fat.
been cheating for 2 weeks some pizza, some sugar some crap, still been training like crazy. Diet is the most important thing for fat loss the rest is just add ons
That's pretty much how it works. Reducing carbohydrate and fat calories will result in the body using stored body fat for energy. However, this approach also can lead to feelings of sluggishness and decreased athletic performance because fat is a poor energy source. So if weight training for muscle growth, then it is better to cut down carbs that are consumed after workouts rather than in meals consumed prior to a workout. Also, cutting out TOO MUCH fat in the diet can not only lead to poor health in some aspects, and it can cause the metabolism to become more efficient in creating body fat, and less efficient in burning it.

This seems to be a big topic across fitness right now. Carbs or no carbs. I think it will vary person to person. Great video 👍
Thank you for watching
Just curious, how do you determine your own body fat percentage? Is there a method available to most of us to do that?
10.00 skinfold caliper on Amazon is the easiest & cheapest

I don't ever let my carbs dip below 100 grams a day, even when I'm at 10% bodyfat.

On a very low carb diet to no carb diet isn't using your body fat as energy on a high protein diet good??
Carbs & fat are the preferred energy source over protein
