Younger people, for the most part, have zero gym etiquette. Another aggravating thing is people who take multiple sets of dumbbells, often up to 4 or 5, and sit on them for their entire time on a bench. They basically take all the dumbbells they will need for their entire workout and keep them so they will have them when they need them. They’ll also take equipment into aerobics rooms and other places and leave it there. Horrible. Gyms need to start enforcing rules.

I converted my garage into a dojo / gym. I have a speed bag, heavy bag, B.O.B., throwing manikins, set of dumbbells, set of barbells, Olympic bars and lots of plates, lat pull down machine, squat cage, stability balls, slam ball, resistance bands, dojo mats, and a lot of accessories. My favorite piece is the professional football leg sled which is heavy duty.

I'm 78. Had my 3rd back surgery in October 2023. After rehab, I went back to the gym, and I continued working out. I do kettle bell squats, barbell dead , lifts, and barbell bench press. My goal is to build strength and reduce waist size. I've been very careful (maybe too much) because I don't want to hurt my back again. Your description sounds aggressive. I'll try it in a limited way. So far, I do 5 sets of 5 reps. Then increase weight by 5 pounds and drop back to 3 sets of 3 reps and increase sets and reps up to 5 and 5, then start over. I am progressing, but slowly. Thanks for the tips. Jim

It sucks because most of the news years resolution people in the gym have no idea what they are doing and just take up space. Now we have elderly people who think they should do 10 sets on the leg press. There was once a guy at my gym and we'd always joke how March 1st can't get here soon enough as about 80% of the new people would vanish and the gym would have much more elbow room.

Because everyone does it now and they use it as a hangout and shower spot, more of a hobo camp than a gym unless you go to a super expensive one. And then you may as well get your own gym equipment.

I attend early morning around 6:00. Then I always see the same hard core respectable people. They don’t waste time as have limited time to go to work. They are in and out ASAP. I am fortunate to be retired now but still prefer this time. I would not be able to handle a busy gym at night full of kids.

Yes, it's January and all the "Resolvers" are at the gym. Many will be gone by March 1. The fees they pay keep the cost down for the rest of us. I belong to OneLife as I like the equipment and sense of community, and Planet Fitness as it has over 2400 locations. Both have pros and cons, as does everything in life. I'm flexible and think that changing the order and using different machines keeps the body guessing.

I am 63 and I live 8 blocks to the nearest commercial gym. I go to the gym at a time when no one else is there, which is 3 a.m. that way, I never have to wait for a machine to open. I have been working out for 28 years, so I know how to find quiet and privacy.

    1) January (and especially early January) the gyms are filled with the resolution folks. That should lighten up a lot by February. 2) If you have to wait an hour to get on a bench or machine, I'd find another gym. 3) It takes trial and error to find the light times at the gym. My gym closes at 9p, I would head over at 7:45 and it was pretty light by then. Weekends from 1 to 4/5 are wide open. I retired late last year, so I don't do nights anymore. Weekday mornings are heavy, but from 11 to 2 are very light. From 2:30 to 4 its a mess with all the high school kids and early evenings suck. And as you can guess that as a retiree I'm not attached to a phone. I see two generations of phone heads. The 30 to 45 range have their phones mostly for music (which I don't understand because the gym plays music). But I guess everyone doesn't dig Classic Rock like I do. The 16 to 30 folks just can't function without a phone. They sit on machines and play, they text, they face time and often are in the locker room taking close up pics of their biceps.

Yes, definitely have to be flexible at the public gyms. Sometimes that doesn't work though - for example, when its free weight bench press day you have to have the appropriate equipment and sometimes have to wait for it. My solution was to find a gym with a shit-ton of platforms and power racks so I never have to wait. Vasa is head and shoulders above any gym I have ever been to in this regard.

I've been weightlifting nine years this month. The gym is in a small town, and also modestly sized. It is very rare to have to wait, to get access to a power rack. It is also very rare to wait to get access to the pull up bar or the trap bar. My next birthday will be my 74th. I enjoy interacting with both my contemporaries and younger generations. I can't count how many times a someone has commented that they hope to be as fit, when they get to my age. My reply is with good fortune and work, they can be. The truth is gyms should be much more crowded. Exercise is the single best thing a person can do to improve their health.

I returned to a commercial gym after several years of working out with limited equipment at home. What I saw; people occupying multiple pieces of equipment and would not let people work in, loud obnoxious groups acting like they were at a bar instead of focusing on working out, people so wrapped up in their filming of videos that they blocked access to move about in the gym, overcrowding to the point it was impossible to work out, and (this may date me) the music was nothing but "ho" this and "n****r" that. It was miserable. I instead invested about $1500 and upgraded my home gym and never went back. Happy ever since.

Most naturals do way too much volume, too many exercises and too often. And a lot of so called fitness experts push volume instead of intensity. Intensity is the key and if you’re doing more than 1-3 hard sets you will plateau pretty quick, less is more for true naturals. Make sure you’re completely recovered before training a muscle again, if you do that you won’t need deloads Having to deload is a sign that you’re doing too much volume too often and not allowing your body enough time to recover.

I do most of my workouts in the power rack. Most of the time I don’t have much competition. The machines are always packed with people who are mostly at rest. I learned to lift in high school. We had to share the weights. There was no other way to workout effectively. People who learn to lift in a commercial gym don’t always learn good gym etiquette. They just camp out until they’re done. God forbid they should have to move a pin!

I'm hearing a bit of a cynical skew here. I don't buy that the gym's full of unserious people wasting time. Mine isn't. Sure, people have headphones on and diddle on their phones between sets. So what? I pace around...and diddle on my phone, picking a song or what have you. Again, so what? It doesn't reduce the intensity of my sets. As far as crowds go, sure, have alternative exercises in mind, but maybe don't go at the busiest hour of the day.

Hmmm... at 71, for 30 years I've never liked gym machines. The fit and range of motion feels alien after working decades in labor, now with a long list of injuries and surgeries. Free weights only: squat rack, deadlift, bench press, overhead, some curls, all light weight, 3x10; 3x weekly. As for the benchwarmers with cell phones, must admit, it's fun people watching. There is an interesting magazine article titled "The Anti-Social Century" by Derek Thompson about our increasing cultural separation, starting with Television and commutes to the suburbs from cities; to present day cell phone, video, and computer technology for entertainment. Have a good workout, hike, or bike ride. ☮

I think there has been a gym culture change, and good or bad, I think it's here to stay. I workout at a busy gym. It's clean, cheap, has all of the equipment, and it seems people are there to work out. Having said that, there are some things that I (age 59) find mild to moderately annoying: People will just walk up and take weights off of your rack. Not the bar, but the rack. No asking, no consideration that for the next set you will be using it. They will also do this in the middle of your set when you are trying to concentrate. I have called a few out, but no behavior has been changed. Working in: I just never see it happen. Maybe it's a post pandemic thing. If I see people waiting for the bench, I offer for them to work in. They never accept if they are under 40 ish. The older folks will jump right in. Hanging out in groups at a piece of equipment, but no one is lifting. If I am waiting I will politely ask to work in, and they always say,, "one more set and the bench is yours". Never fails. Cell phones for scrolling and v-blogging. Doesn't bother me at all. The v-bloggers never mind when others walk in front of the camera, so as long as that is a thing, I don't care. I actually don't take my phone in the gym. I have an Apple watch for emergent texts, but my family knows my gym time is also my time away from the phone. Leaving the rack with a bar and a ton of weights on it. Then no one knows if it's being used or not. Having said all of that, I am happy to see so many people in the gym of all ages and skill levels working out together and getting along. I have never seen or heard of any real trouble at the gym. I prefer going to the gym as opposed at home, because it gets me out of the house, and a few of us old folks like to greet each other.

These days many things are annoying. Phone, tripods, multi equipment users (2 or 3 pieces), talkers, Body odor, loud breathers/grunters, not wiping down your equipment when done, not putting away your equipment, massive gym bags everywhere (sometimes taking up a bench). etc etc... I can write a book with the nonsense I've witnessed over my years of training. Some of the best training and also peaceful training without distraction is outdoors calisthenics training at my local park.

Very over rated exercise. My chest started to grow when I stopped benching and started using cables and tut tech.

I go to my local Planet Fitness and, overall, I really like it. It has a good variety of weight machines and cardio equipment that I regularly use. However, there are a lot of dolts just sitting on the equipment with their damn phones. I also like to work out in a specific order but sometimes find I have to skip around the phone-diddling dolts. I'm in my mid-fifties and working but at retirement I'm going to invest in some serious home gym equipment.

I go to the gym at the low times since I'm retired. Works great for me. I have equipment in my basement but its not very encouraging there. i rether see other taking care of themselves to motivate me.

54, PF member. Seat warmers and social influencers are out in full force this time of year. I feel bad for people that really want to make a lifestyle change but get discouraged by the socialites hogging the equipment.

i train at home with little equipment. i was a powerlifter decades ago. what you described is universal, the new years resolution to get in shape people who would quit by march. i'm 70 and challenged by learning bodyweight skills. they're harder than they look to achieve, and you can get in better shape doing burpees, jumping rope and doing calisthenics exercises than by using fancy machines at commercial gyms.

As others have said in so many words, without being a Richard sometimes we have no choice but to approach the equipment sitters or phone people and ask if we could share the machine with them or get a few sets in. But this time of year with the flu and other loveliness so high in my area, I'm just waiting it out and continuing to workout at home for now. Especially as you've mentioned given a little time a lot of the folks who aren't serious about it aren't going to be there in a number of weeks.

animals are a blessing. I haven't gotten a membership in a gym since 2014 so a little bit before all that filiming and smart phone stupidity started but i can tell you that everything started to change around 2000. Remember the flame, the first bodybuilding magazine we picked up, we though we could look like this with a few years of training for me it was back in 1983, started training at home in 1986 and join my first gym grand father paid for the membership god bless is soul. I put everything aside to go train and the men at the gym took me in, trained me, showed me how to eat to gain mass because back then it was all about being massive. Fast forward to sadly 2000 and today everything as change, people stop caring, it used to be fun talking to women at the gym but now forget it. Back in 2014 we had selfie heros and people who wanted attention i hated it so when the time came i got a great deal on a multi station, bench some free weights dumbells and kettlebells i bough the whole thing had a spare room in my condo and that was it. I don't see myself ever going back to a gym at 52 those years are over.
