Menopause is Misunderstood | Shirley Weir | TEDxGastownWomen

  • If 100% of women experience menopause, why is it a topic we’d rather shy away from than lean toward? As Shirley Weir argues in this inspirational talk, a history of negativity surrounding menopause-from the media and the medical community-has built up a wall of misunderstanding, fear and confusion. It's time to not only crack open the conversation on menopause, but disrupt it by shifting how we think and talk about perimenopause and menopause, women (and all the men you love us!) can unlock the true power of midlife, view it through a new lens, and celebrate its arrival.
Shirley Weir introduces herself as a 49 year-old Menopause Chick. Shirley’s perimenopause journey began 10 years ago. Sore breasts, sleep deprivation, depression and brain fog initially led Shirley to her doctor’s office, the book store and “Dr. Google,” but she was left feeling confused, overwhelmed and alone.
At 46, she created MenopauseChicks.com, a mission-based platform that empowers women to talk openly about perimenopause and menopause, navigate midlife health information and connect to professionals who can support their journey.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Good for you. It’s a real challenge for both parties. She may be feeling like she’s losing herself... just as much as you are. I’m not listening to the rest of this talk, but there’s plenty of good stuff out there. It’s like someone has taken over your whole system and can activate moods at the drop of a hat. Everything aches, sleep is impossible or elusive and everything is annoying. Especially your partner. I hope you can help her and you. It can be done but lots of us have to turn to hrt in desperation because we just can’t survive using herbs etc

When i explained my peri menopausal symptoms to my primary care Dr and asked for help, she told me I was too young and diagnosed me with depression. I was in misery and completely alone, making what could have been a positive outcome one of the scariest times of my life. Medical schools MUST do better when training future physicians!

I was diagnosed at 29 w/ ovarian failure and was told I was “post-menopausal” but was going through it for a long time prior. I started going 3 months between periods at 23, and all of my symptoms were attributed to psychiatric illness. I spent a good 10 years taking a lot of medication that never helped because I needed hormones. I am now 32, and I am still dealing with a lot of issues tied to menopause. I didn’t get a chance to start a family because I probably had a very short window of fertility at too young an age. They deemed it as idiopathic and said it could be anything but I will never have answers. It is a mess when you’re going through peri menopause while trying to establish yourself in the world. It has ruined my life in a lot of ways, it’s hard to see the positive side (aside from no more periods, of course). It’s nice to see you’re not alone in the horrible symptoms department, but it’s also sad how the medical community treats menopause, or doesn’t treat menopause rather, when you’re in the right age group there are probably less women reaching out. In my case they didn’t look at hormones as a cause for close to 10 years. This is pretty unacceptable, women entering menopause at any age deserve some care, support services, anything but indifference and lack of empathy.

I'm 43 and the last 2 years I've felt strange and it's clear why. I think with anything it depends on how you look at it, you can fight it or embrace it. Even though it can be a nightmare you cant let it take over or control you, we only get given what we can handle in life. I will not be a victim to it, knowledge is power and making the relevant changes to help yourself is key. I see this time as a bumpy transition to the next phase in my life 🙂

Small amounts of easy daily exercise, like walking a dog a little, has helped me so much. I don't think I'm perimenopausal but my cycle messes with my head so much. I get depressed half of my cycle. Nothing seems all that pressing or enjoyable and I'm just grumpy and listless. The only thing that makes me feel better is a little bit of movement outside, and that accomplishment makes me feel more motivated to do other small active tasks around the house.
I just listened to another ted talk about menopausal women and exercise out of curiosity. The lady was saying intense exercise doesn't help keep slim. It's easy, stress relieving, with-company, regular movement that does. Also "restore before you do more," don't go all the way before resting a few days, if exercising is already a big part of your life.
I wonder if that could help you feel better ❤️

I know how you feel. My psychiatrist, a woman in her sixties, recommended shock therapy. The tradegy is, she has everything to lead me into the right direction. The most sorrowful part is, women aren't supporting each other, but I feel so sabotaged by a doctor that I've trusted. I am also quite desperate at the moment. I need to find peace in all this confusion, and to make wise decisions.

You really should be on birth control pills to treat the progesterone decrease and estrogen fluctuations as your ovaries begin to shrink. This will help prevent osteoporosis, heart attack and Alzheimer’s. I wish to God I had known this and treated it. I thought that the doctors telling me I could get on birth control pills to stop the breakthrough bleeding all of the time was just a mask not a treatment but it is a treatment. Low progesterone is the cause. Supplement is the cure.
As soon as menopause Get yourself on hormone replacement therapy to protect flexibility of collagen in your cardiovascular system, your bone density and your brain volume. Your doctor is really no help in your education

I agree with you it's nice to read your comment because I just turned 50 this past summer July and I know I'm going through early so I know I'm going through menopause because I haven't had a. For 2 months and I have been feeling more moodier than usual I've been getting flat hot flashes in my face anxiety and lately being feeling depressed that I don't have nothing to look forward to my life over I can't do anything I better hurry up and try to do things before my life ins it's that's how crazy I feel right now it's nice to know that there are other women out there that are going through some of the same symptoms that we can look up to and talk to them and get some information because it is not fun when you don't know what's happening to you and you try to figure it out and you can't do it by yourself because you have no one to talk to so thank you for this, cuz I'm going to look into getting more educated on this menopause situation.

There is also very little education that gives a rounded preparation for the changes to come. Over here in the UK I mentor women through perimenopause too - it's an honour to help them to become even greater beings.. I use a mix of spiritual, psychological, emotional and yogic tools - there are some fabulous miracles available. I love being the me I always wanted to be! Yay for menopause!

My perimenopause started at 38, after a brain injuring car wreck (estrogen skyrocketed and progesterone plummeted, in addition other injuries) ... I am 50 and still dealing with the endometriosis, and trying not to lose hope. The reality is I have not been able to find a competent gynecologist who understands all that is necessary to help me be able to cope with this and a prolapsed bladder. Is there a specific type of gynecologist I need to see that deals with the aging process better than what their books teach them (sorry, a little frustration coming out just then)? The urogynecologists I have seen keep telling me my bladder has to be out by 2 inches ?? To me, that is ridiculous!!

The #1 solution is to get informed, surround yourself with an experienced health team and choose the journey that is RIGHT for you. Perimenopause & menopause are complex. And there is no magic wand. It's more like solving a Rubik's cube = which means there is a solution that's right for you and one that's right for me, but we are likely to make different moves as we navigate there!

It’s so important to get a gyno who can subscribe some high-quality natural therapeutics. I found two female doctors here in Switzerland (after a lot of searching and some lucky recommendations) and got some standardized herbal medicines (Swiss grade so really good quality and strong and covered by insurance here) based on my unique hormonal needs. The trick is that each of us have unique ones so we need to try different ones. When you find what works it is so amazing the difference. The rage is not overtaking and symptoms are still there but not as acute. Search and fight to get the right therapy. Of course what she is saying here is also highly valid-social and medical attitude changes are absolutely positively imperative.

When I told my doctor I thought I was starting to go through menopause (but really perimenopause), he told me I would be fine and many women didn't have any symptoms. I realized it was more likely that the women in my community are taught not to complain and weren't telling him about it...I found a new doctor. Great talk.

My wife is going through menopause, everyone speaks of the women, what about the men these women are married to? It's so hard for husbands trying to deal with a menopausal woman. It's been 6 yrs that we've been dealing with it. I'm ready to leave her. I can't deal with the non-stop arguing, smart mouth, and blaming me for everything. I'm drained and feel like I'm going to have a nervous breakdown.

Go with her to her next appointment with her doctor and talk to him or her about it. If your close to her mother pull her aside and talk to her about it she could act as a mediator. Or if you both are comfortable go to your priest rabbi pastor or a marriage counselor of some kind. If it's about to tear your family apart fast and serious actions need to be made. I would absolutely talk to her doctor because most symptoms can be controlled through medication. In fact, her doctor can probably refer you to a therapist of some kind that handles marriages going through this specifically.

    • @a4dd4a

Wow. And wow to the previous reply. Interesting statistic, most divorces after 50 are initiated by women. Rather than medicating her, perhaps bio identical hormone replacement therapy. I did and it's made a world of difference. Both of you should watch the Menopause Taylor series on menopause by Dr Barbara Taylor.

I agree it is not to be made light of as this dum dum woman is doing. Menopause is an Estrogen deficiency and should usually be treated as such with maybe the exception of having certain genetics for certain types of cancer types. There is no evidence that hormone replacement therapy causes cancer.

I’m in that 20% who’s world gets turned upside down. Never had such a horrendous time. A very naturally upbeat and youthful person by nature menopause has hit me like a truck. Off work, anxiety, panic, tears, no energy, muscle pains, flushes, vertigo, brain fog, I thought I was dying. I’m on propranolol now and I rarely took an antibiotic or a paracetamol before all this. To be fair in the past I would have thought a youthful outlook would do the trick until the flippin’ menopause actually started happening.
